Book Description

"A witty, literate and, most of all, convincing reflection…[Ackoff] shines an often bright light into corners where problems hide, showing the manager how to understand the consequences of his own behavior; identify real, rather than supposed, elements of problems; perceive another's aims; determine what is controllable; and deal with other nettlesome factors." —Inc. The Art of Problem Solving Russ Ackoff—author, consultant, and teacher extraordinaire. During his long career, he has shown thousands of managers, architects, engineers, attorneys, advertising people, software developers, and scientists the way to more creative, artful problem solving. This new paper edition of The Art of Problem Solving is perhaps the best example of Ackoff in action. Step by step, this practical guide shows you how to develop an understanding of the art of creative thinking and the design of creative solutions. Using "Ackoff's Fables"—humorous yet eminently practical parables, based on real problems by real managers—you'll see why solving a problem seldom solves the problem, but why approaching it from a new, unorthodox angle often does. The result is vintage Ackoff—controversial, funny, and always on target. If you like to dig beyond simple solutions—to imaginative solutions that work—this book is for you.

3 out of 5 stars Moods, Emotions, and Bad manners........2007-02-18

Functional illiteracy has reached one out of five Americans. It robs them of the simplest of abilities, like reading a book to their child. That's because 27 million adults in this country can't read. Or write their names. Some refuse to listen; when I asked a neighbor a question and she didn't respond, I said "some are deaf -- and dumb." When confronted with such inexcusable actions, here's how to snap out of a funk and clear the cobwebs to pull yourself out of a bad mood caused by such people. It's not always moods; sometimes, it is as simple as not getting enough sleep the night before. It takes effort to rise above such rudeness to raise your spirits from dejectedness to the ability to cope with the problems life throws our way. One doctor provoked me into losing my cool. Another doctor's office staff were so rude I almost left without seeing him. A bad mood can keep you from thinking clearly.

It's a good practice to talk to someone who will listen with an open mind. Not a friend, as he/she won't keep your problems private but will talk to those you would not choose to know your business. Talk to a problem-solver, not necessarily a professional. Discuss things and ways you can use to feel better; it helps to find someone else who has endured a similar situation to give you support and pointers on how to go about fixing the problem. It's beneficial to make a list of possibilities to distract your mind from yourself to do something good for someon you love or care about, not always a relative.

Prioratize your list of "do-gooding" in the order you need to accomplish a good result. In this way, you can structure your concerns into a problem-solving mode. When possible, use a visualization imagery approach to get the best results. Using your thoughts to what for you is a successful "positive" picture of contentment. But, to do this, you must calm your emotions down. You can transform the feelings of sadness, anxiety, hopelessness, frustration and anger by a deep-breathing technique. Find a comfortable, quiet place where you won't be disturbed and focus on your breathing. If you imagine and clarify the things which are upsetting to transform them into learning experiences, it will make them easier to manage.

Diversions allow your emotions to "calm down" but, as soon as you can, you need to deal with whatever is bothering you as it stays in your subconscious and keeps gnawing at your brain for a resolution to the problem. You can't be like Scarlett O'Hara and "think about that tomorrow." Problems don't automatically go away as if by magic; they linger and, before you know it, they mount up. The longer you live, t he more probelms you accumulate to solve to get on with a productive life.

Vent your anger and hurts to a responsible person, not a gossip, then let it go. Walking for exercise lifts a person's moods and allows one to think more clearly. Otherwise, you could fall into destructive habits such as over-eating, drinking alcohol, even over-thinking. Read Susan Hucksema's book on this very subject. Create a strategy after you calm down, and stick with it, to lead a peaceful existence and be liked by a variety of people like Larry, a most unusual admire of someone's audacity and spunk. Enjoy live; we're only here once -- make the most of it.

A good balance of short, easily-digested messages and more in-depth studies that require careful attention.

The many short fables are described (on page 120) as making "the creative part of problem solving look either too easy or too mysterious. Creativity is not just a flashing insight. Such insights are nurtured in soil prepared by hard and time-consuming work". This is a lead-in to the remaining 80-odd pages of more-realistic detailed examples.

I bought this book while doing the hard work of successfully solving engineering problems at a major corporation. The book helped me to broaden my outlook. I weeded my problem-solving library when I left engineering. This was one of two such books I kept -- the other was Are Your Lights On? by Gause and Weinberg, ISBN: 0932633161. I wrote this review because I wanted people to know that I found Ackoff's book as useful as Are Your Lights On?

5 out of 5 stars How to keep more of your money.......2006-11-21

The book is a list of habits more than a list of hype. And enough habits spanned over time, you get a fairly cheap but well off person. Might not be your persona, but this is the strength of the book. A very good read and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Step by step book on investing.......2006-01-20

This book explains you don't need thousands of dollars in the bank to start investing. You can start with as little as $50. The book tells you what you can invest in as your money grows.
If you are a new investor or afraid to invest because you don't know where or what to do. This is a great book for you.

2 out of 5 stars haphazard organization of lists, lacks vision.......2005-08-18

This book lacks vision and structure. First of all, there is hardly an introduction. Next, we are confronted with a calendar that lists some random things having to do with personal finance, but which is not part of any greater plan. From beginning to end we are bombarded with lists, the thought behind them remaining unclear. Finally, the appendices (7 in number, on a book less than 200 pages) look like unfinished chapters that did not fit in for some reason. For one of them, that reason is obvious: It lists several ways to BORROW money. But if you have to borrow money, why invest? Or: if you invest, why borrow money? This chapter did not fit in because it does not have anything to do with investing in the first place.

The first sentence states what this book is about: 'This book is intended to help you keep your money, whether you just have a few dollars or a few thousand.'

Indeed, this book is not so much about how to MAKE MORE money as it is about how to KEEP your money. So the emphasis is really on everything low-risk and low-profit. You get information about savings accounts, certificates of deposit and bonds, something about mutual funds, but not much information about how to pick your own stocks.

All in all not a 'high value' investment.

4 out of 5 stars Your first guide to investment.......2003-02-26

Short, concise but detailed, is a good overview of the first investment steps.

The perfect investment advisor for every beginner in the stock exchange - and not only. Find out about on-line trading, maximize your 401(k) investments, save for college, explore funds and bonds and investment clubs.

Good book to have, needs updating regularly.

2 out of 5 stars Woefully outdated and lacking........2002-05-27

Outdated investing information is worse than no information at all. Don't take any 'data' in this book at face value.
I was really disappointed in the small number of small investments in the book.
I have a more 'holistic' investment perspective, but I know of a lot more small investments;
Pay off high interest debt!!
A shopping warehouse membership.
A freezer.
A 'cushion' in the checking account to keep any checks from bouncing. It can also reduce the fees for a double dividend!

Regular maintenance of vehicles and major appliances.
Energy efficient lights.
Water heater blanket.
Pre-pay phone cards.
Continuing education classes.
A consultaion with a Certified Financial Planner.

          Book Description

European Union Foreign Policy in a Changing World provides a clear introduction to the complexities of contemporary European Union foreign policy, and offers a fresh and distinctive perspective on the nature of the European Union 's international identity.Opening with a discussion of the EU 's evolution as an international actor, the book goes on to explore how and why the EU pursues five core foreign policy objectives, namely: the encouragement of regional cooperation; the advancement of human rights; the promotion of democracy and good governance; the prevention of violent conflicts; and the fight against international crime. By analysing the various means the EU has used to achieve these objectives, Karen Smith considers the extent to which the EU has pursued these goals consistently. She concludes with an assessment of the uniqueness of the EU as a global actor and the effectiveness of its foreign policy, by comparing its activities with those of other international actors pursuing similar objectives. This well-written and thoroughly researched textbook should appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students of European politics, British politics, foreign policy studies, international relations and related disciplines

            Book Description

Human Rights and Comparative Foreign Policy is the first book in English to examine the place of human rights in the foreign policies of a wide range of states during contemporary times. The book is also unique in utilizing a common framework of analysis for all 10 of the country or regional studies covered. This framework treats foreign policy as the result of a two-level game in which both domestic and foreign factors have to be considered. Leading experts from around the world analyze both liberal democratic and other foreign policies on human rights. A general introduction and a systematic conclusion add to the coherence of the project. The authors note the increasing attention given to human rights issues in contemporary foreign policy. At the same time, they argue that most states, including liberal democratic states that identify with human rights, are reluctant most of the time to elevate human rights concerns to a level equal to that of traditional security and economic concerns. When states do seek to integrate human rights with these and other concerns, the result is usually great inconsistency in patterns of foreign policy. The book further argues that different states bring different emphases to their human rights diplomacy, because of such factors as national political culture and perceived national interests. In the last analysis states can be compared along two dimensions pertaining to human rights: extent to which they are oriented toward an international rather than national conception of rights; and extent to which they are oriented toward international rather than national action to protect human rights. Governments use human rights both as a tool and as an objective of foreign policy. The Role of Human Rights in Foreign Policy analyzes conflicting policy goals such as peace and security, economic relations and development cooperation. The use of diplomatic, economic and military means is discussed, together with the role of state actors, intergovernmental organizations and non-state actors.

              Book Description

It has become routine for the U.S. government to invoke human rights to justify its foreign policy decisions and military ventures. But this human rights talk has not been supported by a human rights walk. Policymakers consistently apply a double standard for human rights norms: one the rest of the world must observe, but which the U.S. can safely ignore.

Julie Mertus, a leading humans rights expert, argues that talk of human rights has become the political equivalent of a bait and switch. Like the car salesman promoting an amazing, but bogus deal in order to get people into the showroom, politicians promise human rights to gain support for their policies, then offer a substitute unreflective of a genuine concern for rights.

Based on extensive interviews with leading foreign policymakers, military officials, and human rights advocates, Mertus tells the story of how America's attempts to promote human rights abroad have, paradoxically, undermined those rights in other countries.

Challenging and powerful Bait and Switch is essential reading for anyone interested in human rights, U.S. foreign policy, the changing role of the military and the efforts of NGOs to promote change.

Winner of the American Political Science Association's 2004 Best Book on Human Rights.

5 out of 5 stars Stimulating and Informative! .......2004-08-30

A wonderful book for academics and anyone looking for a good read on how the human rights movement was promoted or neglected during the post -cold war period in the United States. Through numerous interviews, Julie Mertus has compiled a fascinating look into the world of U.S. foreign policy and its interaction with human rights in the international community. The objectivity of the book was useful in gaining a broad perspective of various influences on human rights in the U.S. including presidential administrations, civil society, and the military.
As a student of human rights, this book helped me to gain a better understanding of the U.S.' relationship with human rights. As an avid reader, I found Bait and Switch to be an interesting and easy story to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide to Understanding U.S. Foreign Policy.......2004-08-24

In Bait and Switch: Human Rights and U.S. Foreign Policy, Julie Mertus presents a balanced and analytical view of how human rights have consistently been neglected as legitimate foreign policy considerations. Although expecting to find human rights norms deeply "embedded" in post-Cold War presidential administrations and the U.S. military, Mertus finds that all too often U.S. foreign policy has been guided by a particularist "American exceptionalism" which threatens to undermine the core nature of universal human rights.

Julie Mertus provides a comprehensive and detailed examination of America's foreign policy decisions from a human rights perspective. The issues raised in Bait and Switch have even more resonance in today's global environment, where fostering a human rights culture in America and abroad should be a priority. This an essential text for academics, policymakers, advocates and anyone interested in international affairs.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and powerful.......2004-08-22

A very good primer on US Government's foreign policy for someone who lives outside US and has experienced the outcomes of double standards that the US Government has been employing with regard to his country. Healthy criticism is an inseparable part of healthy democracy.

              5 out of 5 stars A very important book.......2004-08-22

This well-researched book taught me a great deal. I highly recommend it! Part of the responsibility of our government is to protect its citizens, but we can't allow ourselves to be protected from the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Important and Timely..........2004-08-21

Just in time for one of the most divisive presidential elections in recent history, Mertus provides the reader with the thorough research necessary to make an informed decision about the future of our country, and our place in shaping human rights around the world. As Mertus points out, the United States has long engaged in a double standard of human rights, with what is essentially a "do as I say, not as I do" attitude, and actions that demonstrate this attitude of global superiority. That Mertus has meticulously researched her topic and conducted extensive interviews is not surprising: It is the excellent standard that one has come to expect from Mertus.

Intense fighting in the Northern Region of Ghana in 1994 and 1995 led to the loss of 15,000 lives and the displacement of 200,000 people. A formal peace treaty, negotiated by the government, ended the fighting but did not address the underlying causes of the conflict, which was a complex mix of economic, political, and ethnic factors. An informal consortium of NGOs, initially involved in delivering humanitarian aid, set up a parallel peace process, seeking to build up trust through a series of peace-education workshops and the creation of a multi-ethnic Youth and Development Association. The success of the process was symbolized by the signing of the Kumasi Peace Accord in 1996.This report, commissioned by the Northern Ghana Inter-NGO Consortium, demonstrates how a network of NGOs, sharing skills and building up local capacities, can play an invaluable role in promoting a sustainable peace after conflict.

                  Book Description

Questions about democracy and human rights have emerged in the advent of the 21st century, a time in which the prospects for progress in these areas have never been greater. This book is designed to respond to some of these questions with reference to Latin America, where democratic regimes have alternated with authoritarian governments and the human rights record is inconsistent at best. Taken together, these essays reveal the complexity of democratic transitions, the importance of support for human rights, and the way in which democracy and human rights are linked in Latin America. The first part of the book includes chapters that cast a critical eye on democracy and human rights trends in Chile, Venezuela, Columbia, and Brazil. Part two gauges the impact and prospects of foreign initiatives promoting democracy and human rights in the region, focusing especially on those efforts made by the United States in Haiti and Cuba. Each chapter reaffirms the essential linkages between procedural democracy and substantive human rights, and argues that states with authoritarian pasts must reorient their political cultures, and that these initiatives must come from both domestic and international agents. Students and scholars interested in the problems and prospects inherent in democratic transitions in contemporary Latin America will find this collection enlightening.

                    Book Description

The linkage of development aid to the promotion of human rights, democracy and good governancewas a striking departure in the post-cold war foreign policies of Northern "donor" governments. Uniquely, this book provides a systematic and comparative investigation of policies and practices in the 1990s to promote political reform in Southern '"ecipient'"countries by four donors, the governments of Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States, plus the European Union. The use of both carrot and stick ( that is democracy assistance and aid sanctions) is examined andsharp criticism of current practice offered.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Voice of Reason.......1999-12-28

Andre Sibomana was a phenomenal human being. The son of a wood sculpturer from Masango in the Gitarama prefecture, he rose to become one of the most prominent figures in Rwanda. As the priest of Muyunzwe from 1982-86, his parishiners called him "the wild animal," which translates more precisely from Kinyarwandan as "the wild animal which does not devour, does not crush the crops and does not do harm"(p. 16).

But over the next 8 years, as ethnic extremism escalated against a backdrop of a deteriorating economy in Rwanda, Sibomana would make many enemies. As the editor of Kinyamateka, a Catholic-sponsored paper that Alison Des Forge aptly notes in her forward as "the most important independent newspaper in Rwanda," and the founder of the influential human rights organization ADL, Sibomana relentlessly attacked the authoritarian, corrupted and appallingly abusive Habyarimana regime from 1988 right up until April 6, 1994. Many attempts were made on his life throughout this period, some of which he discusses.

Sibomana tells of how he miraculously survived the genocide. Although he is Hutu, he was marked for death because of his prominence as a voice of reason against the extreme propagandists and politicians who incited, in part, the atmosphere of profound fear, hate, and ethnic exclusion that made for genocide. This is one more indicator, among many more that Sibomana details, that the genocide was politically motivated, not a result of "ancient, tribal hatreds," but of "man's unrestrained taste for power in all forms and at any price"(p. 152).

Sibomana lived by the principle of human dignity. So when suspect perpetrators of the genocide were (and continue to be) rotting, literally, en masse in prisons established by the RPF since July, 1994, he spoke out, and then followed word with action by providing aid and improving the revolting living conditions. So too did he speak out of RPF reprisal killings. But his voice, once again, fell on oftentimes deft ears in the international community.

This is why this book is so important. Not only is it the first account of the genocide and its aftermath in English by a Rwandan, but it is one of the few accounts that exist that systematically illustrate and denounce major human rights abuses by the current regime, the RPF. Sibomana concludes, "It is as though they have learned nothing from what we have just lived through."

Sibomana makes a powerful, emotionally charged, but sharply reasoned indictment of the current government, one which receives so much support from powers such as the U.S., yet is, on the ground, Sibomana argues, as abusive, authoritarian, and dangerous as was the Habyarimana regime in the early 90s.

Carina Tertsakian has done a wonderful job translating this script. For those unfamiliar with Rwanda, this is a more informative (and just as opinionated) explanation of Rwanda - its history, the genocide, and its aftermath - as Philip Gourevitch's now famous book,*We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families.* For Rwandans and international scholars of Rwanda, this account is loaded with detail, insight, and passion. Though a succinct, powerful read, Sibomana is academic. For example, he writes, "Rwanda has a complex history. Were it not so bloody, it could be likened to a game of chess. Someone who hasn't followed the game from the outset and doesn't know the moves can't follow the subsequent stages." Then Sibomana moves the reader swiftly, though ad unguem, through Rwanda's complex history.

The title of this book may be deceiving to some. Sibomana's voice is anguished and angry, and he candidly describes events and behaviors that are the stuff of nightmares. In the end, my hope derived from Sibomana himself. Here was a man who made a difference and could have helped lift up Rwanda. But that hope is no more, and one must search for other sources, some which may be found in the last conversation of this book: "We Must Not Give Up Hope."

Andre Sibomana died of Lyell's Syndrome in Rwanda in 1998. He was refused a passport by the Rwandan government until 4 March, 1998, when he was on his deathbed (p.161).

                          Book Description

Willard Cochrane watched the dramatic decline in American family farming from a vantage point few can claim. He became one of the country’s premier agricultural economists and carried the standard of liberalism for President Kennedy in the last serious fight to save the family farm. Then, for forty long years, he held to the principles while traditional agriculture faded into what he once called “family farms in form but not in spirit.”

This book is about the spirit of family farming: Thomas Jefferson’s dream of an agrarian democracy. What should we do in the face of globalization, high technology, and corporate control of our food supply? Willard Cochrane and the American Family Farm recounts how one man faced these issues and where he would wish us to go in the twenty-first century.
