Customer Reviews:
Informative.......2007-07-24
This book was very informative and do have life changing advice which i can see a change in my attitude and thinking already. However the book was filled with numerous grammer and spelling errors but still a good read the errors didnt take away from the message of the book.
Communicate Better.......2003-12-05
This book really helps me communicate better. I've never read most of the ideas in this book, and I read a lot!
Kevin is a great teacher and that includes his books.
This along with Irresistible Attraction are my favorites!
Persuasion Volume 2!.......2003-07-03
This book probably should have been titled, The Psychology of Persuasion Volume Two. It really is quite good. I bought it for the body language information and was not disappointed.
I really enjoyed the spirit of this book which was very different from his other two books I bought. This book is more motivational and more serious than the other two.
What really worked for me outside of the body language material was information about values. Everyone knows values are important but Kevin's treatment was unique.
A special book by a special person.
Psychology of Persuasion: The Sequel.......2003-05-19
I agree with others that this is Rocky II. A more spiritual sequel to the Psychology of Persuasion than one might have expected but quite good nevertheless.
This book has the best discussion of dealing with personality types I've seen in a communication book. When you are on, you have to be able to move quickly and some books simply offer "recipes" of communication that are too cumbersome.
Talk Your Way to the Top is poorly titled but offers excellent food for thought in the discussion about values and how the pertain to the gaining of compliance.
Hogan clearly seems to start moving away from his traditional NLP background in this book but there is still that glint of Bandlerian technique even in this advanced tome.
A few chapters at the end of the book could have been deleted for a quicker read, but I digress. This is an excellent follow up to The Psychology of Persuasion.
Should have been titled Psychology of Persuasion The Sequel.......2003-05-15
This book is really a motivational advanced Psychology of Persuasion. (Hogan's other book.)
I probably read it too fast. My book is underlined and I have yellow highlighting on almost every page. It's that good. More than The Psychology of Persuasion, the author really focuses on ethical persuasion and defusing conflict situations. He does talk about business and selling a lot but there are also uses of persuasion among friends and significant others.
I was surprised how much I liked this book. I didn't like the title but I did like that it was written by Hogan who I have seen in person. Good person, good book, good skills I will learn to master in the book. I almost want to call the book, "special" because of the content and the gentle way it is presented.
Book Description
Field-proven presentation tips and communication skills, from two of today's top corporate coaches
Every business situation is both a presentation and a chance to leave a positive impression. In Talk Your Way to the Top, corporate communications gurus Kevin Daley and Laura Daley-Caravella give readers the know-how to recognize and maximize the opportunities they face throughout the day.
Each chapter represents a specific situation, from running a meeting to disagreeing with the boss, and outlines the steps needed to handle it with poise, skill, and success.
Communication has a tremendous impact on how professionals are judged. Talk Your Way to the Top gives them the skills they need to:
- Know when and where to speak up--versus when to shut up
- Convey passion and make it contagious
- Connect with an audience on multiple levels
Customer Reviews:
Great advice!.......2003-12-29
I was quite amazed by this book. Let me tell you about myself - I'm a semester away from graduating and entering the workforce (as an engineer). I'm unsure of what to do, I have those gitters about *everything*. How do I talk to the boss, not be embarassed giving a presentation, among everything else racking my brain (e.g. where will I work?). So to me, this book built my self-confidence and told me how to handle special situations, such as business lunches.
I disagree with a previous reviewer that it is an advertisement. Yes, he uses experience to convey the ideas, often in which he made a mistake and learned from it. Of course some would happen at his company, but many others are drawn from his previous jobs. His chapters are short and to the point, with great advice that don't leave you wanting more or ready to stop reading in the middle of a chapter. The book exemplifies his own advice: the quality of the paper, the nice layout, the personal experiences. He's addressing an audience and obviously put a great deal of thought into it.
I loved this book, and its well worth your money.
Try these techniques now.......2003-10-18
My career DOES depend on how I talk to an audience! This book was extremely beneficial to me. I present in front of groups all the time and started using some of these techniques, and they paid off beautifully. I also tend to be a hot-head when things don't go my way with my boss. After reading this book, I thought things through first, developed my game plan following the advice in the book and WON my argument, without my boss getting upset or even thinking it was an argument. Excellent.
Inspiring! Motivational!.......2003-10-16
This book was great. Some business books provide rote information, can be difficult to get through and hard to pull something out of it. But Talk Your Way To The Top is loaded with interesting stories that helped me relate to similar situations in my business. Since they are stories that everyone can relate to, that makes it easy to put the writer's suggestions to use. I find that I use something from the book everyday. You should definitely read this!
At best an advertisement for his consulting business.......2003-10-02
Albeit there are a handful of useful "tricks" to presenting before an audience in here, this book reads more like a commercial for his consulting business than anything else. The stories used to illustrate his points are trite and hardly enlightening. In one instance, he even brags about his own presentation about a military feat he accomplished, used for an inspirational talk. It reads very dry and certainly was not convincing. Perhaps Daley should stick to a live audience instead of attempting to put it down in writing. There is better material available on presentation skills--this one isn't worth the money.
An important book..........2003-09-08
This is an important book, but step 2 in what should be a carefully designed strategy for success. Public speaking - knowing what to wear, how to stand, even where to have those critical business luncheons - all are important tools for success. ALSO IMPORTANT is knowing what to say and who to say it to!So before you step up to the podium, take a seat at the roundtable, or make a luncheon reservation - keep in mind that you never, ever get a second chance to make a first impression. The image you present is the one you will have to live with, or live up to! Step ONE in the art of self-promotion is to do an honest self-assessment of who you are, what you have to say - and why anyone would want to listen to your story! Following a careful step-by-step process will help even the most timid become comfortable with the concept of self-promotion-and public speaking. Women, especially, show far too much humility about their talents and skills. If we want people to hire us, promote us, buy from us or invest in our companies, they have to know who we are, what we have accomplished and why they should do business with us! How we tell our story is critical. Self-promotion isn't bragging. It is a valuable business tool that career women and men must add to their strategies for success - but do it right from the start! Worthless Author.......2004-07-06
I have read many self help books, but this book tops the charts as being a complete waste of time and money.
THE IDEAL TOOL FOR CAREER SUCCESS.......2000-05-26
Talk Your Way to the Top provides an easily accessible source for every sort of business etiquette and strategy--from which fork to use, to how to quell your pre-speaking jitters. Its language is similar to that found in women's magazines like Glamour and Marie Claire, so it's not only fun to read, it's easily absorbed. This is the sort of thing every CEO hopeful girl should carry in her pocket at all times--and I'm not talking girls who want to date the CEO, I'm talking girls who want to BE the CEO. Extremely useful--and narrow enough to carry around with you discretely all the time--the perfect criteria for a self help book is, after all, for no one to realize you need it.
Very Informative.......1999-12-21
This book is as useful for men as it is for women. I picked up good tips on, "How to work a room" and "How to get a New Job". With my MBA graduation coming up, this book has given me a better perspective of what the business world is about. I would strongly recommend that other graduate and undergraduate students read it.
A valuable book to help women communicate effectively.......1999-02-22
Please substitute the following review for the one I submitted February 17, 1999 Talk Your Way To The Top By Tina Santi Flaherty, Perigee, Reviewed by Marilyn Murray Willison There's no doubt that Tina Flaherty is one of the most impressive businesswomen in America today. One of the first women elected as vice president at three of America's largest companies (Colgate-Palmolive, GTE, and Grey Advertising) she has been described by Business Week as one of America's top corporate women. Her first book, The Savvy Women's Success Bible, offered women advice on finding just the right job, lifestyle, and partner. Her new book Talk Your Way to the Top is designed to illustrate the make-or-break career benefits of effective communication. Divided into ten concise chapters, Flaherty offers personal asides as well as common sense suggestions. After pointing out that the image you project when speaking in public can determine who will become your friend, lover, business associate, employer, or employee, Flaherty confides "I learned early on that the ability to talk and think on your feet is an invaluable asset that sets you apart from the crowd. I also learned that the way I dressed, schmoozed with my colleagues, entertained clients, wrote a memo, behaved in public, and dealt with my boss and staff, all painted a picture of my abilities as an executive." Here are a few of the topics that Flaherty addresses in this thorough, concise paperback: · Packaging yourself · Max-ing your meetings · Working a room · Talk like a man, think like a woman · Socializing for success · Getting your act together · Showtime! Giving a speech · Phone finesse · How to make a fool of yourself in public · The last round-up This book would make an excellent gift for anyone who has an unfulfilled professional goal regardless of her age. From reviewing the right and wrong way to handle the telephone to practicing good "private plane protocol" Flaherty offers solid advice that is nicer to learn through the pages of a book than through trial-and-error experience. As she reminds us at the end of Talk Your Way To The Top, "While looking foolish is something we all want to avoid, sometimes it can't be helped. When you do goof up, don't beat yourself up unmercifully. It's not the end of the world. Chalk it up to experience and learn from it . . . Making a fool of yourself every now and then is understandable. But if you don't learn from your mistakes, you'll be a fool forever.

Tina reminds us that it takes TWO TO TANGO - a combination of both(l) SUBSTANCE and (2) FORM in managing our busy professional lives. While buying this book for our young nieces who are at the start of their careers, if we sneak a peek, we might find that we have forgotten some of the basics of influencing colleagues' perceptions of who we are and what we represent. It is never too late to polish up commication skills, even AT the Top.

Book Description
A multifaceted perspective on building and managing brand value
Brand identity has never been as crucial to company survival as it is in today's customer-centered new economy. As much as sixty percent of a company's market capitalization is tied up in its brand name. Yet, according to a recent survey of finance directors at leading firms in the United States and abroad, fewer than thirty percent of those surveyed believed that brands were their organization's most valuable asset after people. A book that will be of vital interest to senior managers and investors, Brands: Visions and Values makes an important contribution to the rapidly expanding discourse on brand value. It takes a timely look at the value of brand to a company from the perspectives of the accountant, the marketer, the analyst and the legal expert. Its comprehensive, multi-dimensional coverage of all aspects of building and managing brand value makes this a standout book in a market brimming with books on branding.
John Goodchild (London, UK) and Clive Callow (London, UK) are both associates at Keith, Bayley, and Rogers and are editors of Professional Investor magazine.

To paraphrase the great humorist Finley Peter Dunne, the Constitution follows the flag and the Supreme Court follows the election returns. Journalist and scholar Max Lerner, on the other hand, followed the Supreme Court for more than 60 years. Lerner analyzes the great minds and judicial decisions that have, over the course of his entire career, done so much to shape America's national character. Portraits of John Marshall, Louis Brandeis, Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr., Earl Warren, Felix Frankfurter, Robert Jackson, and William O. Douglas belie Dunne's comic remark. These fiercely independent thinkers followed no election returns but used their intellect and vision to preserve the American Constitution. Lerner's essays on the Court's moments of both majesty and shame are dedicated "to the newest generation of constitutional students." Among the subjects are "The Supreme Court and American Capitalism," "Watergate as Constitutional Crisis," and "The Bork Wars as Confirmation Crisis." Nonpartisan and clear-eyed, Lerner's discussions of the justices and their most important cases will enrich anyone's understanding of American culture and law. --Nancy Starr

Book Description
Tropical crops such as cowpea, yam, plantain, and cassava are heavily underresearched but, in addition to rice, maize, wheat, and potato, are important as primary or secondary food staples in the developing countries. The modern tools of molecular and cellular technology offer the opportunity not only to make substantial gains in knowledge of these crops, but also they overcome some of the obstacles which presently restrain both the genetic improvement and the productivity of these crops in tropical farming systems. Increased nutritional value of these crops, reduced post-harvest perishability, and lower costs of production are some of the advantages taken from biotechnology. Engineered genetic resistance would also allow to drastically reduce employment of pesticides, which at present are expensive or unavailable for farmers in developing countries and may create environmental and health hazards. In this book experts present opportunities to improve the efficiency of plant breeding programs also taking into account the ethical and sociopolitical aspects of these technologies.
