Laura Berman Fortgang, like fellow personal coaches including Cheryl Richardson (Take Time for Your Life) and Thomas Leonard (The Portable Coach), has distilled her knowledge into book form. (For the uninitiated, personal coaches are like personal trainers--only they work to motivate you to perform at your peak on the job, instead of in the gym.) Her corporate clients have included Johnson & Johnson, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Prudential Securities.
Berman Fortgang says you need to identify the hurdles that are holding you back--even if it's a boss more cognitively absent than Dilbert's--and then do something about them. That's easier said than done. She's also big on making a five-year plan, something that may actually require hours of self-analysis and/or the assistance of a career counselor. But for anyone who feels in a rut but is also truly devoted to investing the time it takes to improve professionally and is willing to take risks, Take Yourself to the Top could be the answer. Berman Fortgang writes like a kinder, gentler Tony Robbins; you get the sense that she's genuinely concerned with bringing out the best in people. And there's targeted information in here for everyone: salespeople, workers on the verge of burnout, wishful entrepreneurs, and those just struggling to make ends meet. Admittedly, the advice in this book takes much more self-discipline to follow than would a dozen sessions with a personal coach egging you on in person or over the phone, but then, you also save the $200-a-session fee.

The book is a quick read and offers practical advice. It's a good place to start if you are thinking about a change. It's not a resume writing book or 10 steps to the job of your dreams type of book.

Vastly disappointing - a trite waste of time.......2003-09-16
I read Amazon's excerpt and a couple of recommendations I thought I could trust before buying this book. It's worthless, obvious, hype-yourself-up, tired "advice." I resent that it is not worth the cost of shipping to return this book to Amazon, because I would otherwise do so. It doesn't rate space in my collection of thousands, nor would I give it as a gift to anyone I wanted to keep as a friend. I don't believe it would be of any actual harm, but I wouldn't want to waste their time. I'm donating the book - perhaps it might help someone who has lived such a stunted life they don't already know this stuff.

When I read LBF's book for the first time (because I did read it a few times after that) I said to myself: this woman is very aggressive. It is after I met Laura in one of her seminars in London that I saw how aggressive - but in a different way - she is.
It is a great book for your career. If you really want to take charge and make it "happen" just work with and on her techniques. Believe in yourself, take responsibility, stop feeling like a victim.
This book will coach you to success regardless of your industry and your sector. It will be easy.

I have read the reviews posted here before buying this book, and was disappointed with it. The book contains too many "duh!" generalizations and conclusions. Just shows that he (or she) who shouts the loudest is not necesarily right.

It is an old axiom that investments with higher risk should pay a higher return. But how do you measure that risk to know what an appropriate return would be? Value at Risk (VAR) is a statistical method used to summarize the worst loss over a target horizon that will not be exceeded with a given level of confidence.
Over the past 15 or 20 years since VAR began to be used the financial world has changed. This includes changes in the kinds of risk being assumed, the new risk-management techniques have been developed, and new laws have come into effect, the expanded use of VAR in other areas beyond the financial areas, among other changes. These changes have been reflected in this new, third edition of this classic volume on the subject. It is a new book (published October 19, 2006), extensively revised and expanded from about 540 pages to 600.
This book is rapidly becoming (if it hasn't already become) the standard by which other books are compared. It is used by the Global Association of Risk Professionals as the main text for it's Financial Risk Manager examination.

This is a rare instance where you're better off just buying the Nutshell. The full casebook is mostly filler: page after page of statutes. There's very little helpful commentary or analysis. You can get pretty much the same material in the Nutshell for a lot less money.

While a little simplistic and over-generalized at times, like all the books I've used in the Nutshell series, this is a good, solid reference tool. As an attorney and moderator of a discussion board on coastal access issues that emphasizes California law, I appreciate the comparisons of different approaches taken in different states. It's not really a book to read from start to finish, but as a quick reference to illustrate issues and point to the leading cases it's been a welcome help.

Coastal State Jurisdiction over Vessel-Source Pollution deals with prescriptive and enforcement jurisdiction in international law aimed at preventing, reducing and controlling pollution of the marine environment. The focus is on a single source of pollution, viz. that by vessels, from the perspective of the coastal State. The wide range of issues brought forward in this book illustrates the extremely complex, but equally fascinating character of coastal State jurisdiction over vessel-source pollution.

This book brings together the leading cases in United States marine and coastal law, thereby capturing both the historical development of the law and the most important contemporary cases of interest to the student and the practitioner. Conceptually, the book moves from the shore to the high seas, beginning with the foundations of coastal law and ending with recent marine pollution disasters. At the outset, the ownership and boundaries of submerged lands are explored, followed by the leading cases delineating the public trust doctrine. That doctrine, which controls the ownership and transfer of submerged and filled lands, has played a critical role in the redevelopment of American urban waterfronts. The rights and responsibilities of coastal land owners are discussed in chapters involving riparian rights, the federal navigational servitude, and the public's increasing demands for access to the shore. The congressional response to multiple use conflicts along the shore, the Coastal Zone Management Act, is explored along with the critical problem of when a regulation goes too far and becomes a "taking." Subsequent chapters examine state and federal regulation of fisheries, Indian fishing rights, and the Magnuson Act, which expanded U.S. jurisdiction over fisheries to 200 miles off shore. Finally, Nixon examines some of the key issues in admiralty law, with an emphasis on catastrophic oil pollution from tankers. This is an innovative text invaluable to students and practitioners of maritime law as well as those involved with coastal management and marine affairs.
