I am impressed!.......2003-09-04
I recently attended an Optimal Thinking for Leaders seminar by Dr. Rosalene Glickman who referred to Dr. De Bono as the world authority on creativity. She recommended to the audience of 500 to read this book and especially to take note of the "Small Map" and the "Big Map". Well, I have to say De Bono is a brilliant author, and I finally understand what creativity means and how to apply it most effectively during conflicts and other situations. I highly recommend this book.

This book will not disappoint you. I was especialy impressed with his explanations of the creative pause, focus, and how to come up with alternatives. His sensitizing techniques are unique and a must read for anyone who wants to optimize their creativity.

I read the review written by someone from New York. I was surprised that he or she had the same feelings about the book as I had. This is a shocking book. On the one hand, it is excellent and teaches people a lot about how to think about a problem. On the other hand, the author is so self-conceited that sometimes I asked myself: if he is so creative, why didn't he invent ANYTHING apart from his own way of making money?
The funny thing is, that I still recommend this book!

By now I think I have read about fifteen of De Bono's books and this is certainly the best. Many of the others seem to be mostly regurgitations of the the same old stuff. Does he get paid by the word? He claims to have written about 25 books, but I think he has to a great extent written one book over and over again. And he seems so pompous and arrogant. How can someone with such arrogance be creative? He never quotes others (perhaps to him there are no others) or cites other works on creativity, even in cases where his ideas were clearly not first his. This is an excellent book, but by an ego-centric author and that unfortunately colors all his writing.

This is the WORST BOOK EVER! Sunny Harris should be ashamed of herself - or at least Locked Up!
No substance, a waste of paper.......2001-09-26
The book starts with 112 pages of very basic information, information for the totally clueless newbie. If you have more than 3 months of investment experience or if you've read 2 beginner daytrading books or if you've surfed investment sites the last 3 months, you won't learn anything new here. The next 200 pages are references, website addresses, and stuff that belongs in a phone directory. Page 189 to page 313 is a listing of NASDAQ stocks!?!?!? All it shows is the ticker symbol, company name and which sector the company belongs to. NOTHING ELSE!!! I would have rated it zero stars if Amazon.com had such a rating. This book is all bun and no burger, I read my copy at the library (313 pages in half an hour). Leave this PoS on the shelf!!!!!
Ripped off!!.......2000-10-19
I couldn't believe that I bought this crap. I didn't learn anything from this book. It has so little content. Most of the book is an appendix listing the stocks on the Nasdaq. This is most likely an attempt to make money from the day trading craze. I bought this because of the last few glowing recommendations but they must have been paid to write it. DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. There are better ones out there that provides better details on day trading.
Not much substance, lots of filler !.......2000-10-09
This book is 350 pages but all of the relevant information could be squeezed into 1/3 that amount. I got 1/3 of the way into reading the book when I realized that the rest of the book is all appendices. Approximately 127 pages of the book are names and the corresponding symbols of Nasdaq listed companies. This might have been helpful before the Internet, but now it is a waste of space. It does give some basic information for the begginer who has no idea about day trading, however if you base the price on relevant information, in my opinion, the price should be under 10 dollars. If you have a little knowledge about day trading, you will not get much more info from reading this book. If you have no knowledge about daytrading, you might want to look around first, in my opinion,you can do allot better.
almost worthless for someone trying to start out.......2000-05-05
I am a new investor buying stocks I believe will grow within the next couple years. I enjoy both fundamental and technical analysis (again I am a newbie at this too) but I was interested in doing a little more aggressive trading such as short-term or day-trading.
This book is WORTHLESS. It will only wet your appetite but to pay ... for this is a ripoff. Please DO NOT WASTE your hard earned money on this book. She pads this thing with the listing of EVERY Nasdaq listed stock and loads of other junk. It is insulting. There are less than 100 pages of info that actually tell the reader anything and that didn't even tell me much. This isn't a 101 course or an overview. This is a "class description" found in a college enrollment catalog stretched out over 342 worthless pages.
I returned it the next day (read it in about 2 hours) and purchased Toni Turner's "A Beginner's Guide to Day-Trading." I have not read it yet so I cannot recommend it to anyone.
If you are going to day-trade, please DO NOT think that one book is going to make you a trader. Trading is not a "get rich click" method. Read all that you can get your hands on and practice your technique.

Images of youngsters in handcuffs and prison uniforms have become common on the nightly news in the United States. As America's fascination with crime and justice has grown, so has attention to the ways in which youthful offenders are charged, tried, and sentenced. While they may once have been viewed as misguided youth, more and more juveniles are being charged as adults and sentenced to adult prisons. Myers questions whether doing so is an effective deterrent for young offenders, if rehabilitation is out of the question, and if youth and society are better served by sending children away to adult prisons rather than juvenile detention facilities. These questions and others are addressed in this careful analysis of the history and evolution of transfer laws that are increasingly prevalent throughout the United States. The move toward charging juvenile delinquents as adult criminals initially coincided with an increase in violent crimes committed by youthful offenders. However, as such policies have grown and expanded, the methods by which youth are formally treated as adults in the criminal justice system have changed. Here, Myers examines the demographic, legal, criminal, and social characteristics of those youth who are waived to adult courts, assessing the nature, use, and effectiveness of punishment and rehabilitation efforts in modern juvenile and criminal justice systems. He concludes that as long as separate juvenile and adult justice systems are maintained, there will be a desire and perceived need for transferring some youth to adult court. However, he suggests that such transfers should be facilitated on a much more limited basis, while greater resources and funding for prevention and early intervention should be implemented to prevent youth from offending in the first place. This controversial topic receives a thorough accounting in this volume, which will open readers' eyes to the realities of juvenile delinquency and its treatment by the criminal justice system.

In capital trials archival research documents race-of-victim discrimination while the experimental research supports a race-of-offender effect. Using interviews with jurors, Edelman sought to reconcile this conflict and explain how and when race effects are likely to occur. White jurors were more likely to discount mitigating evidence when the victim was white. White jurors empathized more with a white than black victim. Victim race also had an indirect effect on the evaluation of the defendant. Killers of whites were evaluated less positively than killers of blacks. These two effects suggest that white jurors were less likely to hold a life sentence position when a black defendant was convicted for murdering a white victim.

Many states and the federal system have embraced sentencing guidelines as a mechanism of sentencing reform. This book draws from interactionist theories of organizations, and James Eisenstein's depiction of courts as communities, to frame an investigation of sentencing disparity, case processing, and organizational relations under Pennsylvania's sentencing guidelines. The author provides a statistical analysis of statewide sentencing outcomes and a comparative statistical and ethnographic analysis of three different-sized county courts. The statistical data show that the major influences on sentencing are legally prescribed ones, but that factors such as conviction by trial, race and gender, and court size are also significant. Ethnographic data illuminate processes behind the statistics by connecting court organizational contexts to case processing strategies, and these strategies to sentencing outcomes. The book concludes with twelve general propositions for future research, discussing possibilities and limitations of sentencing guidelines, and addressing broader issues in the sociology of crime, law, and organizations.

The science of animal production has recently become headline news. The cloning of sheep, the use of pig xenotransplants and bovine somatotrophin, as well as mad cow disease, are all examples of how livestock production is related to food safety, human health, ethics and quality of life. The relationship between intensive developed-world animal production and that of the developing world also raises ethical issues. These are just some of the topics addressed in this book, which originated in a special symposium held at the VIII World Congress on Animal Production held in June 1998 in South Korea. Additional chapters have been commissioned for the book to improve its comprehensiveness.

Fascinating Questions; What Are Your Answers?.......2000-06-27
Thought-provoking" is probably the best way to describe this book. A series of papers, primarily those presented at a 1998 symposium as a part of a Congress on Animal Production, each of which present some of the questions raised by many of the new and newer methods of production of animal protein for food. Essentially the questions raised revolve about the axis of, "What is it ethical to do in order to allow ten billion people to eat?" Several different perspectives are used as starting points, though the primary basis is that of Religion (abstract or particular). Answers are not all provided; these are left as an exercise for the reader. Though the book and the papers contained therein have their origins with professional ethicists, geneticists, and Animal Scientists, the layman can read and enjoy at least parts ~ large parts, i believe ~ of it. I suspect this would be a fine supplemental textbook for studies in either Ethics or Animal Production, or even other, less closely related science disciplines. Nevertheless, it does not "feel" like a pure textbook; i read it for interest's sake, and enjoyed it.
At last! - clarification of those ethical issues & choices!.......1999-12-14
Increasingly novel & sophisticated applications of science & technology to animal breeding and production are raising ethical concerns in many countries in an era when public caring and spiritual values are widely rising. Ethical, political and trade issues in how we treat farm animals have become headline news. To name but a few: quality of life in factory farming systems; cloning; genetic engineering; "Mad Cow" disease (BSE); transplantation of animal organs into humans; bovine & porcine somatotrophin. Complex cultural, emotional, philosophical and spiritual reactions have emerged to the economic, scientific and technical developments in agriculture. At last an authoritative textbook has emerged to guide us through this tangled and growing web of concern, conflict and debate. This excellent new book "Livestock, Ethics & Quality of Life" does not seek to thrust answers upon us but to clarify the arguments and issues for us so that we can review and understand the range of approaches available and make our own informed assessments. Our way is then cleared to choose a forward direction that is based on clarity, discernment and wisdom rather than fantasy, fear and muddled thinking. It originated in a special symposium held at the 1998 World Congress on Animal Production but additional chapters have been specially commissioned to provide a more comprehensive and balanced account.
