5 out of 5 stars Superb !.......2006-04-28

This book took me to the heart of Kashmir Shaivism. It covered concepts and included both practice and experience. The authors have also provided transliterated sanskrit verses for those who are interested. This is a good begining for any one intending a study of Kashmir Shaivism.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastically Delicious!.......2003-10-20

One of those books you devour in one sitting! Too cool for words. A kind of quick overview of Shaivite philosophy and practice. An excellent beginning for those wishing to start the Shaivite path.

5 out of 5 stars Swami Lakshmanjoo is a real teacher........2002-02-10

This book is a breath of fresh air in today's world of yoga and spirituality. It is unusual to read from a teacher who has not only gained intellectual understanding of a particular system, but has also experienced the reality of its practices.

The first chapter 'Fifteen Verses of Wisdom' went straight over my head, which shows I still lack understanding in this area. The chapter 'Talks on Practice' reveals the mechanics of meditation according to the system of Kashmir Shaivism. I found it clear and insightful. This was balanced by the chapter 'Talks on Discipline' which shows that Lakshmanjoo has the integrity to give clear guidelines to the spiritual aspirant on how one should conduct oneself on the spiritual path.

Finally in his last chapter 'The Secret Knowledge of Kundalini' Swami Lakshmanjoo gives real insight into the mechanics of the mysterious subject of kundalini. To date I have found other material on this subject to be rather nebulous and mere fantasy, based in the vivid imaginations of so called gurus and well read authors. Swami Lakshmanjoo takes this mysterious subject out of the category of fantasy and clearly defines how kundalini functions. His intimate description of the various modes of rising of kundalini clearly shows that he has experienced this himself.

This book is a revelation for the earnest seeker on the spiritual path.

Book Description

Pick the right model for the right moment every time. Whatever your investment philosophy and goals, you've probably had trouble at one time or another in measuring the value of a particular asset. Maybe you've been wary of the effectiveness of all the valuation models out there and relied on the "guesstimate" approach or simply picked the wrong model for the asset under consideration. Whatever past problems you may have encountered, Damodaran on Valuation will not only convince you of the vitality of the many valuation models available to you, it will help ensure that you develop the acumen needed to select the right model for any valuation scenario. Written by a gifted teacher and respected valuation authority, Damodaran on Valuation offers an overview of the three basic valuation approaches—discounted cash flow, relative, and contingent claim valuation—and the models within these classes. Using plenty of real-world case studies, it explains the purpose of each model, its pros and cons, the steps involved in applying it, and the types of firms to which it is most suited. Soon, you'll have a solid, practical grasp of tools designed to help you estimate the cost of equity, estimate growth rates, value equity, measure free cash flows to equity, value firms, estimate the value of assets via pricing of comparable assets, and measure the value of assets with option-like characteristics. No model is foolproof. And every valuation is vulnerable to changes in the environment, the economy, and the asset itself. But with Damodaran on Valuation at your side, you can be certain that you'll have every weapon at your disposal in the battle to accurately determine the value of an asset and to make the right financial decisions under pressure.

4 out of 5 stars Good but only short version of another.......2001-10-26

As everyone will agree, this is a good book in valuation tools. With different version of the DCF models, this book is one of the ideal desk reference of security analysis. However, if you also look at the book "Investment Valuation" by Professor Damodaran, you will agree that this one is only a short version of "Investment Valuation". Almost every topic is covered (or copied) from "Investment Valuation".
I gave "Investment Valuation" a 5-star rating. So, for its short version, I give 4-star.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on valuation (mainly equity).......2001-06-07

The book is mainly aimed at valuation practitioners and MBA sudents. The book deals with 3 valuation techniques- DCF, relative valuation (based on PE, P/BV, PS multiples) and contingent claims (options). Great insights into determining key variables (PE, PS, P/BV) based on business fundamentals and pro and cons of using each approach. However, the book does not go into enough depth in CAPM and APT. The author assumes that the reader would have a fair idea about financial ratios, fundamentals etc. The best part of the book deals with valuation of special cases like cyclical firms, brands etc. and how corporate restructuring affects value. It also provides great insights into valuation for takeovers and mergers. The author provides a usable framework for valuing intangibles in an acquisition target- what the different sources of synergy are and how to value each in a lucid framework. Overall, a good book to gain a firm footing in investment valuation techniques.

5 out of 5 stars First Rate.......2001-03-16

This is an excellent book. It serves as both a course in valuation as well as a useful reference tool.

The book is heavily weighted to discounted cash flow analysis, though it also discusses relative valuation (like P/E multipliers) and contingent claims.

Clearly written the book presents in detail simple to complex DCF based models (dividend discount model, free cashflow to equity and free cashflow to the firm). This range of models deal with the complex valuation problem of variable growth. After presenting a model, its limitations and best uses are explained.

He then shows how these models can be used to derive P/E, P/S, and P/BV ratios from fundamentals.

Abundant examples are used to make the material clear.

The book also discusses special situations, e.g., cyclical firms, and distressed firms to mention just a few.

At first glance this book might be mistaken for a "cook book". Lots of formulas and detailed examples of how to work them.

But there is more. And this is where the real "meat" of the book is - underpinning the seeming forest of details and examples - is a valuation logic and philosophy.

If you read this book carefully, you will develop an appreciation for the impact certain fundamentals have on valuation and how they interact with one another. This is much more important than memorizing the formulae in the book.

Also there is some very useful and frank discussion of shortcomings in some of the tools used, including the CAPM and a warning about being seduced into believing that the DCF approach results in certainty.

Valuation involves estimates and formulas (or multiples) are simplifications of very complex real world dynamics. In the businss world, valuation is typically a process of estimating ranges of values for each of several methods chosen (e.g., DCF, market comparables, precedent transacions, replacement value, etc). The resulting matrix of values is then compared (in effect cross checked) to come up with a range of possible values. And here the differences between buyer and seller affect the outcome - different assumptions re the DCF or the cashflow and synergies that can be achieved - come into play to create two different matrices of values - from which the two parties then negotiate the actual price.

The book and its author are well regarded. This particular volume is used in AIMR's CFA study program - which is a measure of its worth.

4 out of 5 stars A good introductory valuation book.......2000-10-06

This book provides a good introduction for those who want to learn valuation. Explained in simple English, the book describes many tools on how to do the valuation, particularly for stock valuation (DCF, P/E ratio, etc.).

I particularly like the explanation of various models of DCF. The author clearly explains the strengths and weaknesses of each models, possible problems and the solutions to the problems.

However, I found that this book lacks more in-depth analysis of the topics covered. Furthermore, I found that the CAPM model, to some extent, does not truly exist in the real corporate world. I have read many valuation reports from big names in investment banking, many of them do not adopt CAPM (for various reasons that make CAPM unapplicable, which are also inherent weaknesses of CAPM, they just put x% as the discount rate). Only few who still stick to CAPM. There should be a bridge between academic and real world applications. A more detailed discussion on CAPM by the author would resolve this issue.

4 out of 5 stars Damordoran on Valuation.......2000-03-25

This is a great book. It has a lot of helpful valuation techniques and I find them really useful. I particularly like the part on relative valuation method and the way to solve the problem of evaluating P/E multiple of different countries. Very useful indeed. But there is a missing piece about P/S multiple. It is entirely based on DDM. What about company which is not expected to pay out dividend for the coming 20 years. This is a great book and the basic valuation methods are very well covered and explained.

Book Description

Damondaran on Valuation will not only convince you of the vitality of the many valuation models available to you, it will help ensure that you develop the acumen needed to select the right model for any valuation scenario.

Written by a gifted teacher and respected valuation authority, Damodaran on Valuation offers systematic examination of the three basic approaches to valuation - discounted cash-flow valuation, relative valuation, and contingent claim valuation - and the various models within these broad categories.

Using numerous real-world examples involving both US and International firms, the book illuminates the purpose of each particular model, its advantages and limitatations, the step-by-step process involved in putting the model to work, and the kinds of firms to which it is best applied. Among the tools presented are designed to:
* Estimate the cost of equity - including the capital asset pricing model and arbitrage pricing model
* Estimate growth rates - with coverage of how to arrive at a weighted average of growth rates by blending three separate approaches
* Value equity - focusing on the Gordon Growth Model and the two-and three-stage dividend discount model
* Measure free cash flow to equity - cash flows that are carefully delineated from the dividends of most firms
* Value firms - including free cash flow to firm models, which are especially suited to highly leveraged firms
* Estimate the value of assets by looking at the pricing of comparable assets - with insight into the use and misuse of price/earning and price/book value ratios, and underutilized price-to-sales ratios
* Measure the value of assets that share option characteristics - including a comparative look at the classic Black-Scholes and simpler binomial models.

Supported by an optional IBM-compatible disk, which consists of spreadsheet programs designed to help users apply the models highlighted in the book, Damodaran on Valuation provides practitioners involved in securities analysis, portfolio management, M&A, and corporate finance with the knowledge they need to value any asset.

It is an impressive work done by Damodaran. to learn how to value a company becomes much more easier with this book. But the samples could be somewhat more complex and sophisticated. This guide is an ultimate guide for them who begin to learn the valuation topic. Professional should also trace it.

Book Description

The new Studies in Contract Law, Sixth Edition, has been revised and updated in many ways, both to cover new developments in contract law and to increase the book's usefulness as a teaching tool.

There is a new Chapter Three, "An Introduction to Remedies." This Chapter, which follows Chapter Two on the Bases of Promissory Liability, provides an early overview of contract remedies through text, cases, and problems. It can be a "stand alone" chapter for courses when there is not enough time for a more comprehensive study or used as an introduction to the more comprehensive treatment of remedies in Chapter 7.

There is a new Chapter Eight on Contract Dispute Resolution: Some Alternatives to Courts. This Chapter introduces the student to dispute settlement by agreement, including through mediation, and dispute settlement by private adjudication (outside of the courts), including arbitration.

There is a new subsection in Chapter Four, The Bargain Relationship, which deals with Assent in Electronic Contracting. Building on an analysis of the so-called "Gateway" problem, this subsection reviews current legislation on electronic contracting and features a recent decision by the Second Circuit (the Specht case) on "click wrap" licenses.

Section 2 of Chapter Five, Avoidance of the Contracts, reviews the recent decisions in California holding that one-sided arbitration clauses in consumer or employment contract are unconscionable.

Section 3 of Chapter Five on Illegality features updated materials on cohabitation agreements, surrogacy contracts, and promissory fraud related issues.

Section 1 of Chapter Nine, Third Party Interests, has a recent case on the assignability of rights created by structured settlements that, in turn, implement judgments in tort cases. This affords an opportunity to review the provisions of Revised Article 9 of the UCC and the common treatment of agreements prohibiting assignment.

The provisions of Revised Article 2, Sales, which is scheduled for final approval at the 2003 Annual Meeting of the American Law Institute are incorporated into the text and problems.

Relevant provisions of the U.N. treaty on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods and the UNIDROIT Principles of International Contracts are identified and discussed where relevant.

3 out of 5 stars Why don't we just study from Gilberts?.......2007-03-21

Short review while I study contracts out of this book. The book is poorly written, where oftentimes the question of law is presented before the facts. Facts, though not what you should take with you, focus you to the event. Law with no facts is meaningless, and we might as well read out of the Restatement book. Sometimes the cases are pointlessly long, sometimes elusively short. Always confusing, never well written. Why put in 1st restatement when we are on the 3rd? Why tell the story out of order? Why give the procedural history before the facts? My questions go unanswered. However, as Contracts go, some of the cases they choose are interesting. Imagine if every single case was about breach of renter's agreement, or arbitration clause. At least there are some fun wheeling and dealings in here.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Volume.......2006-01-04

It is a very rare thing when when words coil around your soul and leave you breathless and clear-eyed. Few books have the power or brilliance to be transforming, and even fewer are brave enough to launch entirely new ways of thinking about literature.

And then comes "Studies in Contract Law: Sixth Edition," the newest book from renowned legal philosopher Murphy Et Al. A quick glance at its faux-leather cover and embossed title and you might cast it aside as yet another heavy, meandering read. But, as is often true, the adventurous will be rewarded with delights heretofore unknown to modern readers.

"Studies" covers a startling range of topics, from the high-powered world of business to the disintegration of families throughout various eras of American history. It even briefly delves into poetry, quoting what it describes as "one of the delights of legal literature," namely the immortal Professor Brainerd Currie's "Aberlone, Rose Of." In the discussion of a presumed barren cow on page 490, the recitation of lines like "Ah me!--Ah moo! / Respectively their quidsome balm / How mournfully they chew!" grips us with longing and wistfulness.

The frenetic pace of the text is filled with endless cliffhangers; nervous readers should take warning. Will Roscoe ever find his true father? Will the theft of Mrs. Hooper's gardenias ever be solved? Will Alaska Northern Development, Inc prevail over Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. regarding the applicability of the parol evidence rule of the Uniform Commercial Code, section 2-202, codified as AS 45.02-202? Subplots and intrigue twist throughout the book until page 1121, where a single sentence rings as sharp and true as any in history.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." "Call me Ishmael." "To be or not be." And now, from the sublime mind of Murphy Et Al: "The idea which ruled this case--that where a person for a consideration paid to him by another agrees to pay a sum of money to a third person, a stranger to the transaction, the latter does not thereby become possessed of the absolute right to the benefit of the promise, nor until he accepts the same in some way; and that while he is ignorant of the promise, or thereafter, at any time before he assents to the transaction, it may be rescinded,--we must admit is well supported in the books."

If the poetry of this sentence does not immediately seize you, consider yourself a hopeless wreck on the shores of The New Literature.
