Book Description
Largely ignored for decades, the World Bank increasingly finds itself at the center of an international political maelstrom. Attacked by the Right as the last bastion of socialism and by the Left as an instrument of economic imperialism, the Bank has struggled to adapt to a changing post-Cold War era. Still the world's leading development institution in terms of size and influence, the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development's failure to articulate and implement a convincing strategy to reduce world poverty has left it vulnerable to the charge that, at least in its present form, it has outlived its usefulness.
In a book neither funded nor controlled by its subject, leading North American and British scholars critically examine the World Bank. They contend that an institution that has grown to unmanageable proportions through internally driven change cannot realistically be expected to effect its own reform program. All the Bank's previous attempts at self-redesign have failed, and the contributors argue it is beyond reform; it must be reinvented.
Reinvention involves a thoroughgoing and externally controlled process of transformation, starting from basic principles and encompassing three closely related dimensions: operations, or the fit between the Bank's lending program and its development objectives; concepts, its vision of development and anti- poverty strategy; and power, which includes the Bank's relationships with member countries and the wider public, as well as structures of internal governance and accountability.

The Entrepreneurial Adventure: A History of Business in the United States
ASIN: 0324066961 |
Book Description
This text contains the strengths of the authors' money and banking text: they bring in a historical and evolutionary perspective, provide a global emphasis where appropriate, and cover all the topics common to traditional markets and institutions texts. In addition, they emphasize a flow-of-funds perspective and the text ends with a section on monetary policy. The text provides balanced coverage of the theories, policies, and institutions in a conversational style, avoiding complex models and high level mathematics, making it a student-friendly text with many unique features that offer additional explanation of concepts, analyses, and historical background. The text emphasizes how structural change, globalization, innovation, and technology affect the financial environment, with attention to how and why institutions and markets evolve.

Customer Reviews:
Quality book - great summary.......2006-01-09
This book gives a good summary of several important concepts related to the financial markets. It is a truly introductory level book but it is highly recommended if you are looking for a complete overview to fill up the gaps in your basic knowledge. Highly readable, even for people without a formal background in economoy but with a basic practical knowledge of the financial markets.
One negative point concerns paragraphs where the history of certain concepts is described or where practical examples are given, applying to different countries in the world : these are often too elaborated without any clear added value.
This book is also recommended by 'The Economist' magazine.
Apparently this book rocks........2004-02-21
When an engineering student completely unfamiliar with economics can use this book to prepare a comprehensive collection of lectures for a large group of Ph.D.-level students in Beijing during the transcontinental flight, it is obvious that this book is extremely capable of teaching. Read the news article:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/02/19/nchina19.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/02/19/ixnewstop.html
However, that makes you question the complexity of the profession and the necessity of the professors teaching it, because if someone can effectively become an expert one a plane trip, it can't be that complicated. That, or Mr. Valdez is a genius who knows how to take something enormously complex and transform it into something incredibly simple.
Truly introductory.......2003-10-01
Although the book by Valdez is truly introductory it does give a good overview of financial markets. It is a pity that Black and Scholes' model or binomial trees are mentioned as too difficult. Different option strategies are mentioned but not explained. One or two graphs would have made it a lot clearer, but as the writer indicates on several occasions, that is outside the scope of this book. For a more thorough understanding of financial markets this book is a good introduction but not enough to really get a good idea.

Book Description
Within the economist's abstraction of a "Perfect Market" it is assumed that all agents have access to the same timely, accurate and free information, and as a result allocative efficiency will be achieved. In practice this rarely happens and in most cases agents have access to different levels of information so that transactions are characterized by asymmetric information. This book presents the first integrated treatment of asymmetric information as both a macroeconomic and microeconomic phenomenon in financial markets.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent text.......2004-05-17
This is an excellent text that puts in an intuitive level concepts that usually belong to much more advanced books or technical journals. It should be attractive to both graduate students in economics looking for an intuitive presentation as well as to business or finance Master's students with little background since the book keeps a discursive style with lots of examples.

Book Description
This is an elementary, up-to-date text and reference book in global finance. It has been especially designed for beginning students in economics and finance, and also for self-study by anyone with a knowledge of secondary school algebra and an interest in finance and financial markets. The subjects taken up in some details are stocks (shares), bonds, interest rates and derivatives, particularly futures, options, and swaps. There are also chapters on exchange rates and banking, and readers are provided with an elementary introduction to risk and uncertainty. The book is also an easily read supplement to more technical presentations, in that it introduces all categories of readers to real world financial markets.
Customer Reviews:
Not elementary, not globally focused.......2002-01-18
This book purports to be elementary and easy to understand. It also claims to introduce the reader to global finance. In fact, it does neither particularly well.
The language is unnecessarily ponderous and unclear, which is a shame. Finance doesn't need to be so academic, boring and confusing. The author does little to welcome neophytes into the financial world, and a lack of interesting visuals and examples doesn't help matters.
Furthermore, much of the book's focus is on generic markets (stocks, futures, etc.), rather than on global (overseas) markets. And so there isn't enough attention to the characteristics and peculiarities of foreign markets. Similarly, the major topics of global finance, that one might reasonably expect to be the meat of such a titled book, are mostly left to just one chapter (Global Finance) of 24 pages!
The book just doesn't fit the bill of a good introduction to global finance.

Book Description
As the financial services industry becomes increasingly international, the more narrowly defined and historically protected national financial markets become less significant. Consequently, financial institutions must achieve a critical size in order to compete. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions analyses the major issues associated with the large wave of bank mergers and acquisitions in the 1990's. While the effects of these changes have been most pronounced in the commercial banking industry, they also have a profound impact on other financial institutions: insurance firms, investment banks, and institutional investors. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions is divided into three major sections: A general and theoretical background to the topic of bank mergers and acquisitions; the effect of bank mergers on efficiency and shareholders' wealth; and regulatory and legal issues associated with mergers of financial institutions. It brings together contributions from leading scholars and high-level practitioners in economics, finance and law.

Book Description
The Seventh Edition of Black's Law Dictionary is the premier legal reference resource. The Abridged version provides a compact legal tool for the layman and the legal professional alike. This indispensible work contains helpful extras, which include a dictionary guide and the complete U.S. Constitution.
Customer Reviews:
Better than using the online version.......2007-04-15
In my opinion blacks online (through west) is too cumbersome to use. too many redirects and long paragraphs. But this book is not essential either. You'll know the phrases you need after your first month or so, and all the legal libraries have a bunch of these all over the place. Bringing it to class is almost impossible because it's so big. But it is nice to have also. I would recommend this over the 8th edition because it's so much cheaper. I don't see much difference between the two. This will sit in my office throughout my career. However it's use will continue to be limited more and more.
Priceless!!!.......2007-02-20
Black's Law Dictionary is worth it's weight in gold. I used it in my research in learning about investment opportunities and basic common law terms. It is very easy to used and the price is right. I am glad that it is part of my personal library.I purchased this book in 2005 and I have been very pleased with it.
Indespensible Dictionary!.......2007-01-10
This dictionary will be well worn! It is indespensible and sits at my desk. Clear, concise easy reading print. It is one that you can't do without. With a tremendous amount of reading to be done as a student, this dictionary was printed with that in mind making a lot less a chore to use.
It Helps.......2006-12-28
I bought this book for a class I took while I was an undergrad, and I used this book almost as much as I used the text for the class. I was able to find almost everything I needed, and in the end, it was worth having. I would recommend this for anyone taking law classes, however, I would buy a used copy because new copies can be a little pricy.
Great for first year law students.......2006-06-27
Bought it for a friend who was a first year and it has helped him immensely in school.

Customer Reviews:
Law Students - You Must Buy This Book.......2003-08-27
I just completed three years of law school, and I really wish I had bought Black's sooner. Our legal system is hundreds of years old, and courts and commentators continue to use much of the same archaic language that has been used since the middle ages!
While this dictionary gives only a superficial treatment to legal terms, oftentimes that's all you need. Throughout law school you'll constantly be reading cases and law review articles and coming across words or phrases you've never heard of before. Black's explains them quickly and precisely. This book is really an investment in your legal future.
Land Rights and La.......2000-10-04
We don't realize our privat property rights until we see it in the very book that helped to enact our laws . Black's Law Book clears any confusion.

Book Description
Trypanosomiasis, a parasitic disease transmitted cyclically by the tsetse fly (Glossina spp.), is arguably still the main constraint to livestock production in Africa. In addition, sleeping sickness, the disease caused in humans by species of Trypanosoma, is an important and neglected disease which continues to threaten millions of people in tsetse-infested areas. Although alternative methods to manage the disease are being investigated, only control or eradication of the tsetse fly will eliminate the chronic nature of the disease. Because its impact is so severe, tsetse-transmitted Trypanosomiasis has been the subject of extensive research, and this volume provides a comprehensive survey of the literature. It will be invaluable resource for medical and veterinary entomologists, parasitologists, and epidemiologists working to manage these debilitating diseases.
