Book Description

"They work full time in the richest nation on earth, yet they can't make ends meet. They can't make ends meet because their wages are too low. They are health care aides who can't afford health insurance. They work in the food industry, but depend on food banks to help feed their children. They are child care teachers who don't make enough to save for their own children's education. . . . They care for the elderly, but they have no pensions."-from Raise the Floor

A job should keep you out of poverty, not keep you in it. But millions of people make up the working poor in the U.S. Rooted in powerful new research and personal narratives, Raise the Floor makes the case for a livable minimum wage and shows how good wages are good business.

Raise the Floor illustrates how the current annual minimum wage income of $10,712 a year just doesn't add up. For example, to make ends meet, two parents with two children would have work more than three full-time minimum wage jobs-66 hours a week-leaving little time for sleep, family outings, religious services, or participating in community activities with their kids.

In a January 2002 poll of likely voters, Americans overwhelmingly identified raising the minimum wage as key to stimulating the economy. By a resounding 77 percent, these voters favored increasing the minimum wage to $8 an hour-the amount a single, full-time worker needs to meet minimum needs.

Raise the Floor is written in a lively, readable style and includes boxed quotes from folks in all walks of life who recognize the need for practical solutions to ending poverty. Documented with 60 tables and charts.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone, rich or poor should read this book.......2005-11-26

For the past 5 years, even with all the corporate scandals and a worse than Vietnam war killing America, never before in U.S. history has our government recklessly hit the gas pedal on giving more "tax cut" handouts for the wealthy elite and big business scoundrels. I'd rather socialize wealth than socialize poverty and terrorism any day. Anyone who thinks otherwise is only looking forward to turning America into a business concentration camp.

1 out of 5 stars They don't work for the employers...........2004-07-09

From the editorial review:
"In a January 2002 poll of likely voters, Americans overwhelmingly identified raising the minimum wage as key to stimulating the economy."
And of course, this poll result should translate into federal policy, for surely each one of those likely voters has a strong background in economic theory.
"...$8 an hour-the amount a single, full-time worker needs to meet minimum needs."
Minimum needs...like the "religious services" mentioned above?

For the rational Homo sapiens seeking an understanding of how minimum wage laws affect the economy, I recommend Capitalism by George Reisman.

5 out of 5 stars Every member of Congress should read this book!.......2001-09-17

As Congress prepares to debate the national minimum wage this Fall, there couldn't be a more timely or compelling book. At first I was a bit surprised to see this coming from the Ms. Foundation for Women, and while it may be an expansion of their advocacy work, they seem to have assembled an experienced, knowledgable group of researchers and writers to put this study together. It is clear, readable, convincing. Even the manner in which tables and data are presented is easy on the eye (and the head). But as I was drawn into the book, I began to see that looking at an issue like the minimum wage, one needs to do so understanding its history (and the authors do this compactly but thoroughly) and its relevance today (and the tie-in to the Living Wage movement is vivid and convincing). This is a book not only about female or male workers, but families, and beyond that, to the values this nation is supposed to stand for...and it made me so fired up that this country still keeps hard working people poor that I wrote both my senators about it. I hope they read it, and I hope you do too...

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Trading System Developers.......2005-08-31

This book is a must read for Trading System Developers. The concepts can be applied to many markets. The section on testing alone is worth the price of the book.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2002-07-19

This book gets a 4 stars rating because of its expensive price (the book is only 220 pages and full of empty spaces). But, price is always subjective. You may treat it as the cost of your education.

Anyway, what makes this book so very valuable is the fact that it is easy to read, clear, definitive, and yes it has so many valuable information on what parameters to use for each indicator. How many of you left confused on what parameters should be used? This book will definitely clear away the clouds in your mind.

LeBeau has done extensive research on indicators such as ADX and his insights on other popular indicators are extremely valuable.

The title may be slightly misleading because bulk of the contents is explaining each technical indicator (120 pages), while only 45 pages on explaining how to build a trading system. Yet, it is clear and concise.

The final Chapter is also valuable. It deals with 12 Day Trading systems that the author has selectively chosen out of all day trading ideas he has or has received from other great traders.

4 out of 5 stars Many concrete tips.......2001-08-25

I only discoverd this pretty old book recently. I am suprised to find there are quite a lot of trading tips. What make this book stands out of the crowd is the tips were very concrete and practical. The discussions about exit and stop loss are parcticular good. Many other books just said cut the loses quick. How quick? When? This book gives you some hints. The authors also give some tricks in using indicators which I hope I could know earlier.

5 out of 5 stars You should buy this........1999-09-10

I know Charles Lebeau. He does occasional system seminars with my father Dr. Van K. Tharp one of the "Market Wizards" and author of Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom. Charles Lebeau is a great trader. When anyone ask me about a technical indicators book this is the one. Charles is very through. He noticed the best traders in the industry are usually right 30% to 40% of the time. They just cut their losses short and have these huge winners. Charles tested most of the major indicators against random entry i.e. (Flipping a coin) most of them don't do any better. Your exits, psychology, and money management determine if you are making money or not. Don't pay too much attention to your entry. This book explains his results and how to use each indicator. Almost any indicator will work with proper money management. I done well even with flipping a coin and the right stop. The indicator best for you is one you feel comfortable with and will stick with. BUY THIS BOOK and hopefully what I wrote may make some sence to you.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Info on TA.......1999-08-21

This book is nothing special. I really disagree with the author's interpretation of the ADX indicator. Absolute level is far more important than slope. The day trading systems shown will lead you to the poor house in no time. Presents some novel ideas though.

5 out of 5 stars Great book with rare insight.......2006-04-20

The chapter on level 2 alone is worth the price of the book. Yes the markets have changed and will continue to change, but you can always apply the general principles. Example: accumulation is accumulation regardless of what the market conditions are. Chris points out how to spot accumulation on level 2 and T&S, and if you grasp the idea, you should be able to spot them in any market with the tools available.

4 out of 5 stars Very useful, if somewhat out of date..........2002-02-17

There is much useful material, along with a thoughtful approach to creating a daytrading discipline, in this book. I don't fully agree with (and wouldn't expect to) all of Lewis' statements, and, as you might expect, given the changes in the trading environment over the last couple of years, many of his methods and observations are arguably already out of date, but others still apply, and his overall philosophy, perspective, and attitude are probably more important, in my opinion, than the particulars of his personal approach as practiced in and around late 2000. The text includes numerous clear, concrete, and detailed examples, though you may have to look past an L2 screen with a stack of QCOM buyers at 343 13/16 (I just never get over mania-market prices) to receive the message.

    1 out of 5 stars These strategies don't work.......2001-05-24

I lost money using these strategies. Buy Steve Nison book if you want a good book on TA. This one just doesn't measure up.

4 out of 5 stars All in all, a rather decent book.......2000-11-16

The good points: first, the book's emphasis is on trading the open, offering a straight forward strategy for playing momentum type gaps. Second, the book has a thorough review of TA basics filtered by practical and experienced advice. Third, there were several odds and ends (like NASDAQ having two data feeds, do the S&P Futures really say anything, etc) that were indeed helpful.

The not so good points: while, its all there, you have to really read the text carefully to extract what you need - meaning it could have been better organized for flow in some chapters. Second, a week in the life "Trading Week" would have been more satisfying if it had been two weeks long and not one (the author might disagree).

All in all, a rather decent book that I value for its level-headed, lets stick to the basics, here's what really works kind of thinking.

      Book Description

As the window of time for bringing new chemical products to market continues to narrow, it is increasingly essential that the process of commercialization (bringing a chemical from an R&D lab to the market as a product) be completed as quickly as possible. Complying with TSCA Inventory Requirements is a how-to book that succinctly delivers the relevant information about the Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxic Substances Control Act to chemistry professionals working in a corporate environment. Author Chan Thanawalla provides step-by-step directions for meeting TSCA regulations, vastly simplifying the compliance process for any professional responsible for these procedures in the chemical industry.

The hallmark of the book is its description of the textual and schematic processes used to check TSCA inventory compliance of chemicals for a variety of chemical operations. In addition to this vital, practical information, the author includes a history of how TSCA has evolved over the past twenty-five years with a discussion of specific TSCA provisions that avoids, wherever possible, cumbersome legal jargon in favor of easy-to-understand explanation. Complying with TSCA Inventory Requirements also contains all the necessary EPA forms, instruction manuals, and guidance documents that may be needed to secure the compliance, including:

-Notice of Commencement Form (EPA Form 7710-56)
-PreManufacture Notice (PMN) Form (EPA Form 7710-25)
      -PMN and NOC Instruction Manual
      -Polymer Exemption Guidance Manual

Complying with TSCA Inventory Requirements promises to streamline the standardization process of compliance like never before.

                          Book Description

This book presents twenty specially commissioned case studies of farmer participatory approaches to agricultural innovation initiated by non-governmental organizations in Africa. Beginning with a broad review of institutional activity at the grassroots level, the authors set the case material within the context of NGO relations with the state and their contribution to democratization and the consolidation of rural civil society.

The book raises specific questions about how useful NGOs can be in promoting technological innovation and addressing constraints to change in present agriculture, how effective they are at strengthening grassroots organizations, and how donor pressures influence NGOs and their links to the state.
