Organizing Immigrants: The Challenge for Unions in Contemporary California (ILR Press Books)

Book Description
Recruiting the growing numbers of immigrants into union ranks is imperative for the besieged U.S. labor movement. Nowhere is this task more pressing than in California, where immigrants make up a quarter of the population and hold many of the manual jobs that were once key strongholds of organized labor. The first book to offer in-depth coverage of this timely topic, Organizing Immigrants analyzes the recent history of and prospects for union organizing among foreign-born workers in the nation's most populous state. Are foreign-born workers more or less receptive to unionization than their native-born counterparts? Are undocumented immigrants as likely as legal residents and naturalized citizens to join unions? How much does the political, cultural, and ethnic background of immigrants matter? What are the social, political, and economic conditions that facilitate immigrant unionization?
Drawing on newly collected evidence, the contributors to this volume explore these and other questions, analyzing immigrant employment and unionization trends in California and examining recent strikes and organizing efforts involving foreign-born workers. The case studies include both successful and unsuccessful campaigns, innovative and traditional strategies, and a variety of industrial and service sector settings.

Organizing the unorganizable: The Victories in California.......2002-02-06
Even though the main body of this textbook was made based on empirical research based it is enjoyable and readable. The most of the contributors of the title give descriptions of the situation under the social science conceptualisation; nevertheless they denude in awareness manner the human situation of this "minority" population.
Matters as the consideration of the immigrants as a group who should be trait in a cultural sensitive way, under my point of view is worthwhile. The topic is product in it -self of a sociological (with the effects and repercussion in the economic, diplomatic and legal facets) problem in the whole world. Migration it is an issues reflex of the actual anthropoid circumstances. It urges responses from governments, trade unions, humanitarian organizations, community groups and civil society in general terms.
Organizing Immigrants is an advantageous and worthwhile textbook that presents a series of case studies (successful and unsuccessful campaign, traditional and innovative tactics) about the impact in social and economic context in California. The chapters in the book provide a sensitive, perceptive and scientific account of the backgrounds: the problems and the prospect involved in the task of foreign-born workers organizing.
The volume describes and analyses three important victories in organizing Immigrants:
1. Justice for Janitors (JfJ).
2. Drywaller's campaign.
3. The American Racing Employment. (ARE)
In California, immigrants make up a quarter of the population and hold many of the manual jobs that were once key strongholds of organized labour. The new immigrants, in a big percentage, had been arriving to the very bottom in the job market and in the society.
The book inquiries critically Issues as comparison between the receptiveness to unionisation in native-born and foreign-born; the preponderances in undocumented immigrants job market sector; the influence of the political, cultural, social, economic and ethnic background and conditions impact the likelihood to organizing.
Under the frame of reference of these matters, the social scientific contributors to this book analyse in nine chapters the task involving Immigrants organizing and the impact on the future of organized labour.
With valuable empirical data support the authors show that immigrants are less inclined than natives to hold union jobs. Parts of the reasons are that unions have poor participation with the social issues that difference Immigrants from Natives.
The situation for immigrants are not radically different in comparison of discriminates minority groups. For this reason campaigns from unions respect on with Immigrants may demand cultural sensitive. Innovative organizing tactics depend on new levels of participation, organizing and commitment. It supposes Education to the members about importance of organizing, and it requires a change in the old mentality.
The Authors were stressed in ethical standards reporting their interest in the research in favour of organizing immigrants and to evidence its impacts in the cultural, political, social, economic, legal and ethnic scopes.
I consider the experiences elucidated in the book could be to provide to the academia (postgraduate and researchers), organized labour sector (trade unions, employee associations) and as well to groups in defence for the minorities rights data and background for the struggle of organizing the bad known as "unorganizable".

The Sri Advantage: Why Socially Responsible Investing Has Outperformed Financially
Manufacturer: New Society Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0865714770 |
Book Description
Socially responsible investing (SRI) is investing that is mindful of the impact on society of that investment. It is often described to investors as allowing them "to do well by doing good." SRI usually describes investments that screen out companies that violate environmental or other laws, use child labor or sweatshops, discriminate in hiring, or -- in general -- produce products detrimental to society or engage in practices deemed reprehensible by most people.
Although many people want to invest in socially responsible ways, until recently most investors believed that they had to give up some measure of performance to do so. The SRI Advantage demonstrates why this is emphatically not the case. It presents overwhelming evidence that SRI has outperformed financially, explains in detail why SRI outperforms, and then examines the implications for investment professionals, investors, pension funds, and community/nonprofit groups. Authored by Peter Camejo -- the chair of an SRI investment fund -- in collaboration with more than a dozen other SRI professionals, The SRI Advantage includes chapters on:
Prefaced by consumer advocate Ralph Nader, and introduced by Republican corporate accountability advocate Robert Monks, The SRI Advantage will be of special interest to investment advisors and financial planners, private investors, the nonprofit sector, brokers, mutual fund managers, and -- especially given the Enron scandal -- pension fund trustees and staff.

socialfunds.com says..........2002-11-19
In this important new book, author Peter Camejo makes a case for why socially responsible investing strategies lead to higher returns than non-SRI strategies.
SocialFunds.com -- With the completion of The SRI Advantage, Peter Camejo has filled a large gap in the existing literature about socially responsible investing. Previous books have concentrated on how one can and why one should participate in social investing, often from ethical or moral perspectives. Mr. Camejo's contribution is focused squarely on dispelling a widely held myth that SRI investments do not earn competitive returns.
Mr. Camejo is very well versed in SRI strategies. He is the founder and chair of Progressive Asset Management, an investment firm that specializes in SRI. According to Mr. Camejo, SRI strategies enable investors to reduce company-specific risks in a portfolio. SRI strategies also allow investors to identify firms with strong finances and effective management. For example, SRI strategies weed out companies that harm society, such as those that sell tobacco or emit pollution from their factories. Moreover, the author states that SRI strategies identify companies that are less likely to develop unforeseen problems. These strategies also detect companies that are likely to possess financial and managerial resources that can "respond effectively to traditional business challenges."
In addition, the author posits that using SRI strategies sensitizes the investment process to the social concerns of society. In essence, SRI strategies screen out companies that are in conflict with public opinion. The result, he states, is that socially responsible investments financially outperform investments that are not socially responsible.
Ultimately, Mr. Camejo asserts that outperformance results because "SRI sees an aspect of reality not included in the research of traditional Wall Street firms." This concept is important because it allows the author to designate SRI strategies as a financial screen. When SRI strategies are viewed as a financial screen, the explanation of their ability to yield outperformance fits within accepted financial theories. This logic may make SRI more palatable to financial analysts and institutional investors than when the strategies are marketed as "socially responsible."
Mr. Camejo writes, "Wall Street's traditional view is that you can add alpha (performance), but that SRI does not because it uses screens that are external to financial performance. But Wall Street is wrong in this judgment, precisely because SRI is a financial screen."
The recent jury award of $28 billion from Phillip Morris to a smoker must surely give pause to analysts who think every portfolio should have a slice of tobacco because it passes traditional financial screens.
Mr. Camejo does a commendable job presenting some complicated financial material. However, lay readers may find themselves lost in a sea of alphas and betas while financial analysts will likely be hunting in vain for detailed analyses. Nonetheless, both of these groups will find the book useful. Individual investors will find some comfort in the fact that they do not have to sacrifice financial performance to invest with their values. Financial professionals will get a solid view of SRI strategies and copious references they can look to for further clarification.
Readers will also benefit from the nine supporting chapters written by experts in the socially responsible investing field. These chapters provide some key arguments as to why SRI strategies should be considered by foundations and pension funds. They also offer additional views on how to employ SRI strategies in such areas as the environment, international investing, and community investing.
The SRI Advantage is sure to create some discussion. Mr. Camejo does not hold back in making claims and seems to even encourage readers to challenge his conclusions. He goes so far as to frame the premise of the book, that investments using SRI strategies outperform investments that do not consider social and environmental concerns, as a hypothesis rather than a proof. The author addresses some counter-arguments to his assertions but never wavers in his belief that because SRI strategies avoid companies that produce social harm, investments using these strategies outperform.
Finally, this book is also a call to existing social investors to not be satisfied with sub-par financial performance. Indeed, most SRI professionals will not claim that investments using SRI strategies outperform other investments; they simply say that investments using SRI strategies earn competitive returns. Now, Mr. Camejo suggests that outperformance is the new measure of success.

International Human Rights & Practice Cases, Treaties and Materials - - Casebook - Documentary Supplement
Francisco Martin Manufacturer: Kluwer Law International ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9041106162 |
Book Description
The international human rights field is a rapidly emerging and potentially lucrative litigation market. Over the last ten years, international tribunals, such as the European and Inter-American Courts of Human Rights, have become increasingly powerful and effective in stopping human rights violations and awarding compensation to victims. Also, unknown to most lawyers, these tribunals award attorney's fees and costs. International Human Rights Law & Practice: Cases, Treaties and Materials integrates the law of these international tribunals and provides a comparative analysis of this jurisprudence with US and foreign law. Developed as a practitioner's deskbook, International Human Rights Law & Practice presents extracts from cases frequently unavailable in law libraries for use in pleadings. The Deskbook edition is designed with the beginning practitioner and clinical professor in mind. Rules of procedure, model pleadings, case flow charts, troubleshooting checklists, and a tribunal address directory are included to provide the beginning practitioner with all the basic information required to practice before these tribunals. With over 100 countries now recognizing the jurisdiction of these tribunals, the litigation market in international human rights is vast. For example, refugees are an untapped source of ready-made cases for international courts. In International Human Rights Law & Practice, immigration attorneys will learn how to turn an asylum case into an international court case with little additional expense. In International Human Rights Law & Practice, civil rights and criminal defense attorneys will discover that international law affords more protection to their clients than local law. Because customary international law is binding on many domestic courts, international law governing, e.g., gay/lesbian rights, racial discrimination, immigrants' rights, use of force, workers' rights, and the death penalty, is indispensable to US civil rights and criminal defense attorneys facing unfavorable domestic law. International Human Rights Law & Practice is supported by a Documentary Supplement volume which includes the full text of all relevant treaties, conventions, procedural rules, case flow charts and model pleadings. Together these two volumes provide a complete resource for attorneys and professors desiring to become active in the international human rights field.

The Indigenous Fermented Foods of the Sudan: A Study in African Food and Nutrition (Cabi Publishing)
Hamid A. Dirar Manufacturer: CABI ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 085198858X |
Book Description
Recent decades have witnessed increased interest in the foods of Africa, spurred on by the recurrent famines that have plagued the continent. It is now recognized that helping people to use their own knowledge of indigenous foods and agriculture provides better prospects for long-term sustainability than imposing solutions from outside. Yet to date there has been little documented information about the foods that are utilized by the poor of Africa, and particularly how these foods are preserved in a hostile environment for later use. This book is a unique compilation of both the general literature on Africa's fermented foods and beverages and of original research conducted by the author in Sudan. Information was gathered from elderly rural women who traditionally hand down such knowledge from generation to generation. With increased urbanization and dislocation of family structures, there is a danger that such knowledge might otherwise be lost forever. The various foods are considered in terms of their role in the struggle for survival and in the social fabric of rural Sudan, as well as from the perspectives of nutrition and food microbiology. The book is a major contribution to this literature, of interest to all concerned with food science, human nutrition and rural development.
