I would like to find a copy of Rita's audio tape, "What goes around comes around" which I had until recently. It's missing & I would love to source another (or similar) tape. It was recorded at a corporate rally in the States after her book was published. Wonderful themes & inspiration. Very easy, entertaining listening as I drive. I miss having it around! Will also consider obtaining the book, given the great reviews. If anyone can help, please contact via my Australian Email. Kind regards Cherry Cole

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding. Rita changes lives........1998-09-25

Someone wondered where Rita went. She is in network marketing now since 1989 -- president of Arbonne Inernational (California). She still lives in Paradise Valley, AZ, has been married 32 years. Her "babies" are teenagers now, she is very wealthy and happy in her new career. She inspires women networkers through appearances as an Upline master as well as articles and tapes. She still inspires me. She realized "when you don't speak, you don't eat" and started with Arbonne, having spoken at many networking meetings. She's my role model as I venture into my own network marketing business.

5 out of 5 stars Intellectual Capital Review.......2000-06-05

It is interesting in today's world to see books that remond us all the present and future value of intellectual capital. It is unfortunate the book does not focus on the de-valuation of intellectual capital when downsizing occurs in an organisation. The cost of replacing the intellectual capital does never figure in anual reports, it is 'hidden' by other standard costs, such as employee related costs, equipments, etc. We need to establish a quantification method, so that intellectual capital replacement is thoroughly investigated.

If you ever work a trade show, or are in charge of staffers who do... YOU NEED THIS BOOK! Trade shows can and should be great sales and marketing tools for corporations today. But like any other tools, they have to be approached carefully and intelligently. The problem is that too many exhibitors and exhibit staffers don’t take the time to do their homework when preparing for a show. Sure, they put together a great looking exhibit and jam it with lots of products. Sure, they take thousands of brochures and catalogs to give out to “prospects.” Sure, they have preshow meetings to teach staffers about what products are on display, what their work shifts are, where the bosses will be hanging out, and where everybody will be having dinner. But the hard fact is that most corporations rely on the “experience” of their staffers to ultimately achieve success. They rely on staffers to already know how to work a show. They rely on staffers to know how to approach attendees, initiate conversations, determine the quality of the interaction, identify top prospects, capture contact information, and establish a mutually agreed-to, post-show follow-up action step. ...and too often that reliance would be sadly misguided.

Mr. Miller uses every sales cliche in the book but he's obviously not well educated about the inner workings of the consumer packaged goods and mass markets business. If you sell products to Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreen's, CVS, and Kroger; and if you work the shows like NACDS and ECRM; stop wasting your time reading this irrelevent book.

This book describes the life of a merchant (Abu Taqiyya) and some details about his family. You see how he traded, where he traveled, how he negotiated, etc. Also, you see how his family was affected by Abu's merchant lifestyle. It's informative cultural history. But, it's a little slow.

The details sometimes get a little too detailed. It's not a sweeping novel, by any means. This was written by a scholar, so expect to see more detail and analyzation than you would in say, a historical fiction novel.

The book does its job -- teaching you about merchant culture in 17th century middle east. It's just not a "fun" book compared to most.

There may not be any startling revelations here -- no "how to be a bestseller" advice -- but there are plenty of "real world" tips for professional writers (or people who want to be pros). She talks about query writing, organization, critiquing your own work, frugal writing practices, etc. I wouldn't pay $50 for this book, but if you get it for under $10, it should be worth it.

          Book Description

Asset pricing theory abounds with elegant mathematical models. The logic is so compelling that the models are widely used in policy, from banking, investments, and corporate finance to government. To what extent, however, can these models predict what actually happens in financial markets? In The Paradox of Asset Pricing, a leading financial researcher argues forcefully that the empirical record is weak at best. Peter Bossaerts undertakes the most thorough, technically sound investigation in many years into the scientific character of the pricing of financial assets. He probes this conundrum by modeling a decidedly volatile phenomenon that, he says, the world of finance has forgotten in its enthusiasm for the efficient markets hypothesis--speculation.

Bossaerts writes that the existing empirical evidence may be tainted by the assumptions needed to make sense of historical field data or by reanalysis of the same data. To address the first problem, he demonstrates that one central assumption--that markets are efficient processors of information, that risk is a knowable quantity, and so on--can be relaxed substantially while retaining core elements of the existing methodology. The new approach brings novel insights to old data. As for the second problem, he proposes that asset pricing theory be studied through experiments in which subjects trade purposely designed assets for real money. This book will be welcomed by finance scholars and all those math--and statistics-minded readers interested in knowing whether there is science beyond the mathematics of finance.

This book provided the foundation for subsequent journal articles that won two prestigious awards: the 2003 Journal of Financial Markets Best Paper Award and the 2004 Goldman Sachs Asset Management Best Research Paper for the Review of Finance.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Serious Finance.......2007-06-28

This book and John Cochrane's "asset pricing" complement each other very well. Bossaerts discuss extremely important and overlooked issues in asset pricing theory and empirics in a very compelling way.
As a practitioner with an advanced degree, i found it a valuable read, and recomend "the paradox" to any serious finance practitioner or graduate student.

Let me end quoting the book (p.84):

"Asset pricing theory is both elegant and logically compelling. It is a nice piece of applied mathematics. But this is not suficient to conclude that it has scientic merit. To establish the latter, its predictions need to be verified in a variety of contexts."

          Couldn't agree more.

            Description:
One of the most striking results on asset pricing in the last 20 years is the better forecastability of long-horizon returns over one-step return forecasts. This could seem a paradox, given that the further our forecast horizon the greater the uncertainty we are bound to face. This point can be found in Campbell and Shiller [Journal of Finance 43 (1988) 661; Journal of Finance 40 (1985) 793; American Economic Review 76 (1986) 1142] among others. In this paper, we offer an alternative explanation to this ''forecast paradox '' that is in agreement with Kim et al. [Review of Economic Studies 30 (1992) 25], who found that the negative serial correlation in long-horizon returns depends very much on the sample choice. Our explanation is based on the existence of simultaneous shifts in the time series of the equilibrium stock price and dividends. This explanation relies on the concept of co-breaking [D.F. Hendry, A theory of co-breaking, Mimeo, Nuffield College, Oxford, 1995.]. We put forward a stochastic present value model, in which we are able to show how shifts in the process for dividends lead to shifts in the equilibrium stock price. This has important implications for multiperiod forecasting, as we demonstrate in this paper. An empirical application supports our results. In our empirical application, we model earning, dividends, stock prices, and the risk-free interest in the United States from 1926 to 1985. We can distinguish three different historical periods where the process for dividends and the equilibrium stock prices are characterized by different properties in terms of their means and variances. Our empirical model is extended to a forecasting exercise where the ''forecast paradox'' is solved.
