Book Description

What is LION TAMING about?

LION TAMING: Working Successfully with Leaders, Bosses, and Other Tough Customers proves that imagination is still the fastest path to learning. Lions are the people we encounter and work with in every organization or business who wield power and influence. They roam freely across all occupations. By applying the metaphor of being a lion tamer, you will learn how to understand these lions and to team with them for effective and rewarding results.

LION TAMING is divided into three parts:

I. Lions Are Never Tame helps you identify the lions in your midst, distinguish between the good lions and the bad lions, and understand what makes them tick. Lions act differently because they think differently, and we need to understand them as lions to work more effectively together. LION TAMING introduces the concepts of The Lion's Four Senses and The Lion's Instinctive Identity, which will serve as useful tools to "read" the lions you encounter and approach them with newfound ways to help both you and the lions be successful.

II. The Art of Lion Taming heightens your self-awareness while teaching you the strategies and methods that real lion tamers use and how to apply them where you work. This includes the use of verbal and nonverbal cues and communication, closing the gap between attention getting and attention using; and how to avoid sticking your head in the lion's mouth!

III. Lion Taming Is Really Lion Teaming reflects the cumulative nature of the experiences, lessons, and strategies throughout the book. These are embraced by the ultimate secret and irony of working as a lion tamer: leaders, bosses, and other tough customers are sensitive to being challenged as a lion but welcome the support, influence, and expertise of those who show that they are part of the lion's team. The best lion tamers inside the center ring and the boss's office understand that the foundation for teamwork is rapport, trust, confidence, and respect.

LION TAMING: Working Successfully with Leaders Bosses, and Other Tough Customers is able to bring the metaphor of being a lion tamer to life in a way no other book does because the author interviewed real lion tamers, watched them train and work, and blended their secrets and strategies with countless parallel experiences and stories from people across society and the workplace.

The book contains more than 75 Secrets of the Lion Tamers, quotes from many of the men and women whose workplace has been inside the steel-caged arena, such as: * "Lions are never tame, it takes strategies to deal with that" * "Lions always have your full attention but it is hard to hold their attention" * "Courage that is self-conscious betrays great fear!"

Every chapter concludes with specific take-aways called The Lion's Tale that summarize each chapter and provide tips and strategies to step inside the lion tamer's shoes!

Lion taming is everyone's real job, and this book finally tells us how to do it!

1 out of 5 stars Boring - don't waste your time.......2007-09-15

I can not understand the good reviews or the appraisal on the book cover. The book is very boring, repetitive, and too metaphoric, in the sense that it writes about actual lions and actual lion tamers. I can not say that I learned anything new, and the book could be easily compressed into 50 pages. Don't waste your time!

5 out of 5 stars Artfully done!.......2006-07-10

It's not difficult to imagine yourself as a lion tamer, equipped with the traditional whip and chair, matching wits with lions like leaders, bosses, and customers. You have to keep your wits about you in your relationships with these cats. It's a lot like real-life lion taming. And yes, the consequences of angering a lion in business can be comparatively just as devastating as angering a lion in the circus cage.

OK, cute analogy. It shouldn't be that difficult to draw a few analogies and crank out a clever book. Perhaps, but Steven Katz went further...much further. It's obvious as you turn page after tempting page that this author did his homework. The lion tamers he consulted and learned from are named in the acknowledgements, and their influence is felt throughout the book. Whether the topic is the big cats with four feet or two, the lessons are plentiful, clear, and appropriate. The transition back and forth between lions and humans is smooth and natural. Learning Katz's lessons is comfortable, not forced.

We're surrounded by lions. "Being a lion is not a specific position, it is a state of being." It's essential to understand that lions have four senses beyond sight, sound, taste, touch, and smell: dominance, territory, survival, and social standing. You'll gain a deep appreciation of these elements in the three sections of this fast-moving paperback: Lions are Never Tame, The Art of Lion Taming, and Lion Taming is Really Lion Teaming. You can see the flow just from those section titles.

The book is filled with lessons that apply the fundamentals of lion taming to leadership, management, and other relationships. Conveniently, the lessons are all listed at the end of the book to pull it all together. Well worth the time to curl up with this book cover-to-cover.

5 out of 5 stars How to Speak Truth to Power.......2006-04-18

LIONTAMING is an entertaining "users manual" for igniting leadership at all levels of an organization. Through the lens of an analogy as powerful as Aslan in Narnia, author Steve Katz boldly takes you on a journey into the workplace as a lions den. Unlike Dilbert's facetious approach to Catbert, Dogbert and other "manajerks", Steve ratchets the risk up a notch and deals with the ferocious realities of the King of the Jungle himself. Drawing on years of experience with leaders at the highest levels of government, Steve explores the role of office staff way beyond merely managing their managers or following their leaders by bringing fresh insights into workplace survival tactics. After Steve's presentation at American University's Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation, I promptly bought his book and featured him at both an Interagency Regulatory Forum and the US-EPAs Transformational Leadership Conversations series. If you enjoy reading LIONTAMING, you'll be amazed at how it can come alive in a discussion.

5 out of 5 stars "Lion Taming" Delivers Real Value.......2005-09-19

Steve Katz's "Lion Taming" fills a real void in the literature on management, which focuses primarily on leadership, strategy, and implementation of change. His focus is on the close, personal advisors to powerful decision makers within corporations, government, and nonprofit entities. His purpose is to identify the principles by which such key staffers can increase their effectiveness while retaining their integrity. His analogies to "lion taming" are not a stretch. As I read Steve Katz's book, I relived whole episodes in my own career and suddenly perceived how they fit together into a broad and comprehensive analytical pattern. I am just sorry that this book wasn't available thirty years ago when I was a freshly-minted MBA!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2005-09-13

Imagine these scenarios: Your corporate leaders are always "difficult." You butt heads with your superiors and even your clients. As a middle manager, you have trouble figuring out what the boss wants. You seem to fight too much with your spouse. If any of these examples are familiar, you need to learn how to tame the "lions" in your life. Using analogies from training actual lions in the circus ring, author Steven L. Katz shows you how to work with human lions - people who demand dominance and control - from a bossy supervisor to a stubborn spouse. This is intended to be a textbook for the study of human psychology and interaction. Though you might wish it were a little deeper, the jungle beast analogy keeps it interesting. We recommend it to those who want to learn how to stand their ground in business, politics or modern day culture.

Book Description

An in-depth examination of money management methods for consistent trading success

In Better Stock Trading, Daryl Guppy shows readers how to improve returns by using good money management techniqueânot by increasing risk in trying to win more trades. Readers will learn how to level the market playing field by using the best money management strategies for their particular account size. From the straightforward two percent rule, to pyramiding methods, and overall portfolio management, Guppy presents a selection of strategies, which will allow any independent trader to capitalize on a rising market and protect funds when the bear takes over. He also shows readers how to study their own trading history and use this information to improve their trading future. Trading skill counts, but money management gives independent traders the edge.

Daryl Guppy (Australia) is an experienced and highly successful private trader. A member of IFTA and the Australian Technical Analyst's Association, he is a popular speaker at international trading seminars in Australia and the Asia Pacific region. He is the author of five highly successful trading titles, including Market Trading Tactics (0-471-84663-5), and is the Editorial Director of The Investors' International Bookshelf.

3 out of 5 stars Better Stock Trading by Guppy.......2006-08-19

Very good book. Interesting & useful ideas on money management, but needs to be carefully read & reviewed for errors. The examples have some errors, and are not always consistent with the text. Too much detail on Asian trading for an American audience. Too many notes to see the authors other books & services. The references to Excel spreadsheets are incomplete. Some camparisons, like with zero cost trading may be misleading, & ignore other factors, like effective stops.

5 out of 5 stars Read this before you trade!.......2004-12-20

I traded for over a year before I read this book. My bookshelf is full of books on technical analysis, day trading, swing trading, candlesticks, etc., but none of them are all about money management. As the author demonstrates, with charts, graphs and examples, how you manage your trades is more important than the accuracy of your technical analysis. Various entry and exit stratagies are compared graphically to show you the dollar results obtained for the same trade using different stratagies. I highly recommend this book, to the beginning trader and to the experienced trader whose portfolio contains a number of losing positions.

4 out of 5 stars deserves to be on your shelf next to tharp and elder.......2003-12-16

The book really starts out examining how risk management can affect a system with positive expectations. The main point he is making is that your average profit should be greater than average loss, which is true enough. Unfortunately, there is an implied assumption in this section that suggests you can change the stop without impacting the probabilities of success -- i've found this not to be true in my own trading. I would certainly liked to have seen some mention of this in the book, but that's a bit of a nitpick to be quite honest.

In the book, Mr. Guppy uses the 2% risk model Elder uses. However, there are bits missing. For example, he has no real way of limiting risk. He has a model whereby through diversification and position limits, he will limit outstanding risk to 20%. However, from my brief reading of the book (I plan to go over it more thoroughly later), there is nothing stopping you from entering another 20% worth of positions, and another 20%. Stopping your entire portfolio out several times. Sure, I hear you say, this could never happen to a top trader -- however, if it happened to Steve Walton , I suspect it can happen to you.

Overall, I think this is an excellent book, and I learned quite a bit from it. Mr. Guppy's writing style may not be quite as polished as some writers, but I think it's still quite good. If you are a position trader, i'd highly recommend this book -- if you opt for the swing or daytrading timeframes, I think you might be better off with Elder or Tharp -- although it certainly does no harm to study all of these authors, as they each have a lot of really good things to say about this topic. I think this book may indeed be destined to be in fine company, alongside Elder and Tharp. This work is much stronger and generally more useful than his earlier work, Market Trading Tactics.

    Book Description

This book presents you with a new and fresh approach to the usually very technical and boring subject of direct-access trading. The Author's "Keep It Simple Stupid" approach enables you to learn about the Securities industry and, more important, the life as a professional trader with ease. You receive an entertaining insight on the Author's perspective. To round things up you are introduced to the very strategy that gave this book its name Hopscotch, of which the Author claims that it so easy to apply that even a child could be successful with it. A brief excursion into various other trading strategies and an extensive Appendix with explanations about Technical Analysis and Industry lingo give the book a neat balance between entertaining and educating its reader.

Thorough revision of the previous edition. Cases and statutory law are updated and the material reorganized; conforms with modern law school course in real property. Chapters open with brief outlines of the law encompassed within, providing an overview of rules in that area. This is followed by a series of factually-based problems designed to generate thoughts about how these rules could be applied in real life situations. In turn followed by statement of applicable law and analysis of legal issues raised, plus likely outcomes and current citations of the various laws.

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent treatise.......2004-10-31

This is an excellent treatise on the law of property. Because the sections on Bailments, Gifts, Rights of Possessors of Land, Present Possessory Freehold Estates, and Future Interests were very useful, I would recommend this book for the first semester of property. Unfortunately, Hovenkamp's coverage of issues traditionally discussed in second semester property is not as useful. For second semester, I would suggest using Understanding Property of the Understanding Series. This series is published by Lexis. Understanding Property is also useful for first semester, but because Hovenkamp's treatise covers first semester issues well, it's not really necessary.

5 out of 5 stars Another night law students dream.......2003-11-24

This is a very consise treatise of Property Law - it is not your typical hornbook - this is an excellent study book - with excelent hypos - it has very terse restatements of the law with killer Essay - hypo problems ( Lots of them too - numbers of roughly tracking the importance of the subject - IE lots of Adverse Possession probs - a few finders law probs ) - its like a Siegels or Emanuels Q&A but with hard covers - it is really a "find" for those studying property law. Im tickled the most recent edition is 2001 !

4 out of 5 stars Helpful and reliable.......2001-08-06

What can you say about a hornbook? I'm trying to review the ones I use for class as fast as I finish using them, but except for famous ones like Prosser and Keeton, there's not much to do other than point out whether I found them helpful and reliable.

This one was both. As an evening law student with delusions of eternal youth, I just completed two semesters of property law during summer session, and I surely found Hovenkamp's discussions useful. (In general I prefer hornbooks to casebooks anyway.) The text includes lots of sample problems as well; you may especially appreciate this feature when you discuss estates, future interests, and the Rule Against Perpetuities.

I didn't notice anything that clearly set it apart from other property-law hornbooks, but we don't, after all, buy these things for the bells and whistles. It's a solid book that covers a standard subject in pretty much the standard order. Recommended to law students.

          2 out of 5 stars Confusing.......2000-03-02

Property is a difficult subject, therefore, any casebook on the matter should be clear. This casebook, on the other hand, did more harm than good. Every case was followed up by questions with a list of cases to "see." Most first year law students have hundreds of pages to read every week and will never refer to these other cases. Thus, these questions (which are worded rather obscurely, I might add. The notes seem to be in another language: Latin) are never answered by the student. With a subject like property, it would be more helpful for the casebook to have more straightforward explanations to accompany the cases, as in Singer's casebook

                    Product Description

This easy-to-read and appealing introduction to the American legal system tells the story of a real lawsuit (DeWeerth v. Baldinger) from the time the client first identifies a problem through trial and appeals. Following the course of the dispute over the ownership of a valuable painting, "Whose Monet? An Introduction to the American Legal System" presents the basic concepts of civil lawsuits and of the American system of common law. The organization is straightforward and the easy, conversational writing style is ideal for anyone interested in learning how the American legal system works.
