It is now widely accepted that expansionary fiscal or monetary policies alone are unlikely to help Europe's ailing economies. Solving Europe's economic problems requires reform of the economic institutions that influence economic activity and the way the economy responds to macroeconomic shocks. This volume employs novel approaches to the study of some of these institutions.

The group of contributors in this book come from academia and international organizations in Europe and the USA. They focus on trade unions, which affect real-wage flexibility and the provision of training to workers. They also concentrate on employment protection legislation, which discourages firms from firing old workers and also from hiring new ones. The structure of housing market imperfections that can greatly affect regional mobility is also discussed.

In the last twenty years there has been an explosion of economic research on labor force dynamics; the movement of individuals between labor force states. This book focuses on the methods by which behavioral theories of labor force dynamics have been empirically implemented. Most attention is paid to the partial equilibrium two-state transitional model of job search behavior. That model is the foundation for much of our thinking about the nature of unemployment at both the individual and aggregate levels. Although the basic formulation has remained the same, approaches to the empirical implementation of such models has changed dramatically.

American Negro Slavery is Ulrich Phillipsý attempt to provide an overview of the practice and institutions of slavery in the Americas from its inception through the 19th century. Writing in 1918, Phillips hoped to provide an account of slavery based upon historical evidence and modern methods of research, rather than polemics or ideological motivations. He thus drew his evidence from the plantation records and letters of slave owners, contemporary travel accounts, court records and legal documents, newspaper articles, and in some instances the recordings of slaves themselves, rather than what he viewed as more biased sources such as abolitionist writings and other agenda-driven polemicals. While this approach was not systematic, and led him to base many of his conclusions upon anecdotal evidence and an over reliance upon particular chroniclers of the South such as Frederick Law Olmsted, the bulk of his findings are supported by subsequent scholarship.

Indeed, in the descriptive portions of the work, Phillips was generally on target though lacking in depth. It is in the analytical portions that latter-day historians would take exception to his findings, as they are based more upon his personal beliefs concerning race, rather than documented evidence.

Phillips mainly concerns himself with the economic and political aspects of slavery; the bulk of the book is therefore devoted to an examination of how westward expansion (from European exploration through American settlement) coincided with economic development and resulted in the creation of legal institutions protecting slavery in those regions where a deficit of labor and a surplus of arable land combined to make it a viable method of production. He seldom concerns himself with the experiences of slaves themselves, though where he does he finds that most were well provided for materially and treated with less than brutality by their masters, who for both economic and moral reasons had an interest in the happiness and well-being of their property. He does not deny that slaves were whipped, performed dangerous or tedious tasks, or were separated from their families, but indicates that such occurrences were the exception rather than the rule. Nor does he find that slaves were particularly susceptible to laziness or criminality, or that the threat of slave uprisings was as great as contemporary whites assumed, since the racial characteristics of slaves included loyalty, geniality, and a predisposition to manual rather than intellectual labor. Phillips also explores the profitability of slavery as an institution, but finds that further investigation is required, as while the tendency of slave owners to keep their capital invested in slaves rather than industry resulted in a lack of economic diversification in the South, it also resulted in great profits during times of high demand for agricultural products.

This collection of essays represents a departure from the traditional perspective, recently questioned by many scholars, from which Ottoman history is usually written. Central to the establishment of Western domination over the ‘East’ is the writing of its history in terms of Western hegemony, above all in the case of the Ottoman Empire, which has been characterised as static, irrational and authoritarian in contrast with the dynamic, rational, democratic West. This book contrasts sharply with conventional studies of the Ottoman Empire, based on this European world-view, that focus on political military, and cultural institutions. Following a series of general theoretical discussions about Ottoman social structure, the contributors turn to case studies directed either to theoretical problems or to ‘facts’ which suggest new avenues of conceptualisation.

Seems pretty good to me.......2005-10-24

I've read through two books on business planning and this one seemed as good as any. It came recommended by Anthony Robbins' Business Coaching, so I tried it. I got the job done, so I guess it was good enough. Is there a phenonmenal business plan book out there? Maybe. Does it matter? All that really matters is that you get your plan written. If this book worked for me, there's no reason it shouldn't work for you. Good luck!

Common sense and avoids the hyperboles!.......2001-08-26

Business Plans that Work is an intelligent, common sense approach to business that has a simple thesis; level headed philosophy, and a well structured organization. Written by a business consultant (and former art teacher--perhaps this helps the lack of turgid written prose), this book focuses on the theme that YOUR business brainstorm can only be envisioned and planned by you, simply because you are the one who has come up with the vision, enthusiasm, and interest to begin a particular business in the first place. Gilmann eschews the idea that consultants know best when it comes to developing a business plan. Sort of the philosophy that you are probably the best person to trust in investing your own money--since it's YOUR money, after all. The book is clearly written but not condescending to people new to business and tries to encourage the reader that business is not a mysterious enterprise, but rather a pursuit thatrequires foresight and planning, with, of course,initial inspiration. Her explanations of line by line items of business plans are quite clear, and she presents sample business plans that are good models (although iterating that all business plans are unique). She pays ample but not obsessive space to the importance of Internet issues, and encourages the reader who does write a plan to be blend he right amoung of rationale and enthusiasm in the text of one's plan. She also draws quite nicely on personal experience from childhood to adulthood, which creates a comfortable trusting relationship between reader & writer. I stood in my local large bookstore branch, flipping through about 10 books on the subject, and this one just seemed to have the right user-friendly balance that made me feel comfortable reading it

Sure fire guide to the legal research and writing process.......2004-01-10

This text is clearly written and breaks down the mechanics of research and writing into easily understood steps. Great for students entering law school as well as for paralegals.

Absolutely awful book.......2003-05-26

This book is poorly written and unedited. It is riddled with grammatical errors; the captions for the illustrations and samples are misleading; often the text that can't be distinguished from illustrations because of inconsistent use of fonts and dividing rules.

When one of the authors tried to discuss the difference between the executive, judiciary and legislative branches of the federal government, she forgot to describe the executive or perhaps didn't know what the president's function is.

One of the authors thinks that Black's is a common law dictionary. Perhaps she meant commonly used? No attorney would tolerate a paralegal or legal assistant with such poor communication skills as these authors possess; yet the book is supposed to teach the prospective paralegal to communicate in a legal environment.

Although the Legal Research and Writing Handbook is geared for paralegals, it is a valuable guide for attorneys as well. The authors guide readers through each step necessary to use a research tool. In addition, readers learn how to integrate various research methods to perform comprehensive searches of legal materials. The writing portion of the book also provides a step by step approach to drafting documents. It is an excellent resource for all legal researchers and writers.
