4 out of 5 stars Very Good primer.......2007-08-25

This was my first book on the topic, and I found it to be very solid. The book covers a brief history and evolution of the profession, professional expectations and certifications, educational options necessary to achieve certification or professional competence, options on how to get started actually practicing (working for insurance companies, securities brokers/dealers, self-practice, etc.), the regulatory requirements involving licensing (investment adviser) and record keeping practices, and marketing (focused primarily on promotion). The material is typically delivered through a brief explanation of the topic, accompanied by personal insight and numerous stories from colleagues. In one of the final chapters the author presents numerous stories on how various practioners migrated through their first 5 years of getting started in their practice. The insight and stories are very helpful; during certain passages it would have been more helpful to provide additional detailed explanation rather than "life experiences", but there is certainly enough there to lead you to appropriate web sites where more information could be gathered. Regarding the hefty price of the book, if you are serious about being a financial planner, then you'd better get accustomed to the concept of value, and value based pricing. I feel that I got my money's worth.

5 out of 5 stars First Step to Become a Financial Planner.......2007-05-19

This book probably covers all aspects of financial planner profession. It includes education and where to get it; experience and how to gain it; support network and how to use existing one or start a new one; and most important, at least to me, what to expect in a daily routine.
Interviews with professionals helped me to decide if being a financial planner is for me. This is a excellent book of knowledge for anyone considering financial planner profession.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book Before Entering The Field!.......2006-12-04

There are a lot of different paths that one can choose to enter the Financial Planning field. This book takes an unbiased look at several of these paths and, in many cases, uses testimonials of people who have chosen each respective path. The author emphasizes the importance of attaining the CFP certification throughout the book. She also provides a plethora (yes plethora) of resources for those interested in the field. The key is to find the right syestem for the individual. Before I read this book I had a vision of how my practice would be. After reading the book, I made some adjustments to my plan and was able to fill it out with elements I had not considered before. This book is filled with useful information and interesting nuggets! I strongly recommend anyone who is considering entre into the field to read this book first!

5 out of 5 stars An informative introduction to the basics of copyrights.......2002-11-14

The Librarian's Guide To Intellectual Property In The Digital Age by Timothy Lee Wherry (Director, The Robert E. Eiche Library, Pennsylvania State University) is a solid reference and informative introduction to the basics of copyrights, patents, and trademarks and written especially to serve the needs and questions of librarians. The issue of what constitutes fair use, modern-day disputes over file swapping services such as Napster, common misconceptions about patents, and a great deal more, is presented in easy-to-understand terms, in a text that sometimes adopts a question-and-answer format. The Librarian's Guide To Intellectual Property In The Digital Age is a highly recommended addition to professional and academic "Library Science" supplemental reading lists and reference collections.

      Book Description

Drawing on complex systems theory, this book investigates how human societies deal with change in linked social-ecological systems, and build capacity to adapt to change. The concept of resilience is central in this context. Resilient social-ecological systems have the potential to sustain development in a manner that does not lead to loss of future options. Resilient systems provide capacity for renewal and innovation in the face of rapid transformation and crisis. Case studies and examples from several geographic areas, cultures and resource types are included; merging forefront research from natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities into an innovative framework for sustainable systems.

                    Book Description

Integrated Fish Farming (IFF) is a sustainable-agriculture technology practiced widely in Asia and other regions of the world. This integrated technology can offer farmers economic improvements while lessening the adverse environmental impacts of farming. IFF systems typically involve a combination of fish polyculture, integration of agricultural production (livestock and/or crops) with aquaculture, and on-farm waste recycling. Drawing on research presented by experts from around the world at the International Workshop on Integrated Fish Farming, this book provides thorough, detailed and truly interdisciplinary coverage of one of the world's most important approaches to integrated farming systems. Integrated Fish Farming places IFF in a global context, reporting on case studies of successful IFF operations, experiments to enhance IFF performance, bioeconomic survey and modeling analyses, research on farm waste use and pond ecology, socioeconomic elements of IFF extension and adoption, and the bio-technical and economic aspects of adapting IFF to reservoirs, marshlands, rice paddies and marginal habitats.

                      Description:
Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) is increasingly being recognized as a major component of the terrestrial nitrogen cycle, however, the factors that regulate its behaviour in soil remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of agricultural land use on the amount of DON in soil. At 94 sites, representing seven contrasting agricultural land use types, we extracted soil solution during the growing season. DON was high in all land use types constituting 57+/-8% of the total dissolved N (TDN) pool and generally followed the seriescitrus>vegetable>forest=arable>grassland=wetland>heathland. The TDN pool was dominated by DON in less intensive agricultural systems. In relative contrast to DON, the amount of dissolved inorganic N (DIN) varied widely upon land use with intensive agricultural systems being dominated by NO"3^- and low input systems dominated by NH"4^+. We conclude that DON represents a significant N pool in all agroecosystems but its concentration is less sensitive to land use system than DIN.

                        Description:
Different positions within soil macroaggregates, and macroaggregates of different sizes, have different chemical and physical properties which could affect microbial growth and interactions among taxa. The hypothesis that these soil aggregate fractions contain different eubacterial communities was tested using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) of the 16S ribosomal gene. Communities were characterized from two field experiments, located at the Kellogg Biological Station (KBS), MI, USA and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), Wooster, OH, USA. Three soil management regimes at each site were sampled and management was found to significantly affect T-RFLP profiles. The soil aggregate erosion (SAE) method was used to isolate aggregate regions (external and internal regions). Differences between eubacterial T-RFLP profiles of aggregate exteriors and interiors were marginally significant at KBS (accounting for 12.5% of total profile variance), and not significant at OARDC. There were no significant differences among macroaggregate size classes at either site. These results are in general agreement with previous studies using molecular methods to examine microbial communities among different soil macroaggregate size fractions, although further study of communities within different aggregate regions is warranted. Analysis of individual macroaggregates revealed large inter-aggregate variability in community structure. Hence the tertiary components of soil structure, e.g. arrangement of aggregates in relation to shoot residue, roots, macropores, etc., may be more important than aggregate size or intra-aggregate regions in the determination of the types of microbial communities present in aggregates. Direct microscopic counts were also used to examine the bacterial population size in aggregate regions at KBS. The proportion of bacterial cells with biovolumes >0.18@mm^3 was higher in aggregate interiors than in exteriors, indicating potentially higher activity in that environment. This proportion was significantly related to percent C of the samples, while total bacterial cell counts were not.
