Book Description
It is the best investment strategy you've never heard of. The stock market still intrigues people, but shell-shocked individual investors have learned to be more savvy and realistic with their investments. There is no way to eliminate risk when stocks fluctuate, but risk can be reduced and even controlled. Geared to individual investors, Eric Stokes unravels the mysteries behind using market neutral investing principles, enabling readers to make money by using his proven low-risk, high-return balanced techniques.
In addition to tips that cover beginning to intermediate investing topics, Stokes also presents the strategies behind market neutral investing in practical, easy-to-understand terms. Stocks go up and down, but investors shouldn't have to limit themselves to only one-half of the equation. Enter market neutral investing, where investors can take advantage of movement in both directions: long and short investing. Market Neutral Investing teaches investors:
* How to implement this proven strategy, used since the 1940's by the most elite money managers.
* What the three different types of portfolio risks are: company, sector, and market, and how to manage them.
* How to sell a stock short and make money when a stock price declines.
* What ""hedge funds"" are, how they operate, and what makes them attractive.
* What the five simple measures of stock valuation are and how to use them.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introduction to Market Neutral investing.......2007-09-14
This book was a good introduction to market neutral investing. After reading it, I certainly have a good appreciation of what is involved.
I can't give it 5 stars however, the reason being when you short a stock the individual investor will be paying margin interest (etrade at time of writing this review was 10.24%
<$50K for example). Margin interest isn't taken into consideration in the book, in fact I don't believe it was mentioned once. That's crazy to me. If you short $50K worth of stocks, and go long $50K of stocks for 1 year, and your margin interest is 10%, your combined long/short portfolio is going to have to return 5% to even breakeven. The fact that margin interest isn't mention in the book disappointed me. But like I said, this is a great book as an introduction to market neutral investing, it's easy to follow, and well written.
Great book.......2007-07-28
I thought this was a great book. It simplified the concept of investing 'short' in conjunction with a standard stock portfolio to reduce risk, without sacrificing overall returns. In todays market, this certainly sounded attractive to me. Not only conceptual, but actual information on how to easily create and trade a short strategy. Much easier than I expected to implement this kind of advanced stock investment strategy.
Insightful !.......2005-02-24
Any investor disposed to pick stocks should read this excellent short introduction to the esoteric discipline of market neutral investing. Author Eric Stokes provides a better introduction to investment risk than the usual explanations found in most popular investing books. He also discusses a variety of ways to use the underlying principles of market neutral investing without becoming a full-fledged market neutral investor. Indeed, the quantitative capabilities and research skills necessary to run a market neutral portfolio are far beyond the scope of all but the most well-staffed investment firms. But a simple strategy like purchasing shares in an index inverse fund to hedge the risk of a long index fund could make sense for many investors. To learn if this strategy is right for you, we recommend reading this book.

Book Description
In Law and Public Choice, Daniel Farber and Philip Frickey present a remarkably rich
and accessible introduction to the driving principles of public choice. In this, the first
systematic look at the implications of social choice for legal doctrine, Farber and Frickey
carefully review both the empirical and theoretical literature about interest group influence and provide a nonmathematical introduction to formal models of legislative action. Ideal for course use, this volume offers a balanced and perceptive analysis and critique of an approach which, within limits, can illuminate the dynamics of government decision-making.
“Law and Public Choice is a most valuable contribution to the burgeoning literature. It
should be of great interest to lawyers, political scientists, and all others interested in issues at the intersection of government and law.”—Cass R. Sunstein, University of Chicago Law
School
Customer Reviews:
public interest vs private interest.......2006-07-19
Law and Public Choice aims to be an introduction to economic models of rational behavior to explain the workings of political institutions in modern democracies. The book summarizes the strand of research in public and collective choice (or positive political theory, as American political scientists would rather say), that is, the fact that democracies require people to organize themselves to decide by voting how to allocate resources to public goods. Of course, the task is much more complicate than individuals have to face when to decide whether to buy cornflakes or Nasdaq stocks. Thus understood, the book leaves out the law and economics, and the comparative law and economics traditions. The book was released in 1991 and is now a little outdated and focuses too much on the American system. It is not a comprehensive text. For that the reader should consider Muller's Public Choice III or Cooter's Strategic Constitution, which are updated, comprehensive and devoted to students.
Despite its caveats, this book is well written and engaging.
Lacks Aim.......2003-07-27
This book purports to be a introduction to public choice theory as it interacts with the law. Public choice theory is a framework that analyzes the behavior of public structures under the assumption that all relevant actors try to maximize their self-interest. This book uses public choice theory to analyze (i.) interest groups, (ii.) the democratic process, (iii.) economic regulation, (iv.) statutory interpretation and (v.) public law.
While readable and engaging, Farber and Frickey's text suffers from several defects. The defects are representative of its lacking as an introductory text. First, while this book packs a lot of information into roughly 150 pages, it is not comprehensive by any stretch of the imagination. Topics in areas such as torts, and law and economics are saliently missing.
Second, this book aims to be a "critical introduction," which means that it is a biased introduction. Clear and intentional bias defeats the purpose of an introductory text, which is presumably geared towards promoting understanding rather than agenda. The authors obviously have qualms with public choice theory's widespread application in libertarian thought, and thus they try argue against mainstream public choice arguments for the textualist readings of statutes, criticism of democracy and the inefficiency of economic regulation. What irked me about this was not the criticisms per se, but the excessive straw-man-building employed by the authors. The political nature of this book is quite simply: to make the reader realize that mainstream public choice theorists' skepticism of governmental inefficiency is badly misguided, if not false.
Thus, this book lacks comprehensiveness, objectivity, and an introductory feel. With that said, however, I learned quite a bit once I got past the political posturing. Lucidly written, the book demonstrates public choice theory's flexibility in handling complicated theoretical issues in political science and law. This book might serve a better purpose as a complement to a more general introduction to public choice theory.

Book Description
Examines the economic justifications for a coercive state; the economic and distributional implications of using legislative voting to make collective decisions; and the economic logic of constitutional devices such as separation of powers, an independent judiciary, and special protections for the political and property rights of individuals and oppressed classes. The analysis of constitutional law highlights the distribution of power among society's members and the distribution implications of alternative mechanism for institutionalizing state coercion.

Book Description
In this first monograph on the Russian cooperative movement before 1914, economic and social change is considered alongside Russian political culture. Looking at such historical actors as Sergei Witte, Piotr Stolypin, and Alexander Chaianov, and tapping into several newly opened Russian local and state archives on peasant practice in the movement, Yanni Kotsonis suggests how cooperatives reflected a pan-European dilemma over the extent to which populations can participate in their own transformation.

Book Description
In this book, Leon Zamosc provides an account of the history of ANUC and its struggle on three main fronts: for land, for the defence of the colonists, and for the protection of smallholders. The main focus of the book is on the land struggles. Professor Zamosc adopts a structural perspective, examining the agrarian contradictions that propelled the peasant struggles, the changing relationship between the peasant movement and the state, and the political and ideological content of the peasant challenge. He explores these issues in the light of the shifting patterns of class alignments and antagonisms that marked the rise and decline of peasant radicalism during the 1970s, and offers some suggestions about the significance of ANUC’s struggles for the understanding of peasant movements in general.
Customer Reviews:
A critical study of peasant demands for land in Colombia.......2003-07-01
Professor Leon Zamosc's critical study, "The Agrarian Question and the Peasant Movement in Colombia: Struggles of the National Peasant Association 1967 - 1981," provides a massive testimony of how poor and often illiterate peasants in Colombia organized across the nation to demand land from the State. The author also patiently explains how the peasant struggle for land threatened to destroy the large landowner class and its corrupt clientelist system in Colombia.
On that note, this Cambridge University Press carefully documents how the Spanish Conquest established the tradition of large landowner monopolization of state owned territory in Colombia. Moreover, the text exposes how large landowners fanatically guarded the original Spanish Conquest system of Indian exploitation for over a century. Over the years the landowner "process involved the racial redefinition, dispossession and subjection of the exploited population," according to the author. However, one of the troubling discoveries of Professor Zamosc's research is how Colombia's large landowner class regularly obtained large tracts of property with fraudulent practices.
Of particular interest is a International Bank for Reconstruction and Development report authored by renowned American economist Lauchin Currie in 1948 that proposed a controversial program for accelerated development under the name "Operation Colombia." In Currie's opinion, the irrational use of labor power and land in agriculture was the main obstacle to economic growth in Colombia. It seems the plains and more fertile areas were used for extensive cattle raising, while most of the labor was being wasted in the inefficient agriculture of the worst soils of the mountain slopes.
Also of interest is President John F. Kennedy's Alliance for Progress policy in the early 1960's that argued that the large landowner development of agriculture was only aggravating the problems of unemployment and low peasant incomes and that these factors were creating "a dangerous social and political situation." Tragically, the landowners and political leaders of Colombia continued to maintain a rigid policy of squeezing profits from the land with little or no regard for improving the standard of living of the peasant.
However, this all changed with the 1966 election of National Front Liberal Party President Carlos Lleras Restrepo who nurtured the organization of peasants to help implement dynamic land reforms. President Lleras Restrepo was the first National Front leader to abandon rhetoric and actually authorize a generous amount of State funds to pave the way for a fair distribution of land. Unfortunately, his successor Conservative Party President Misael Pastrana (1970-1974) was easily manipulated by large landowners and the government sponsored peasant movement was crushed.
Professor Zamosc explains how the landowners embraced the Cold War and conveniently labled the peasants (who did lean to the left) communists in order to justify the repression of the Pastrana government. The author who's research was funded by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development in Geneva laments how Colombia lost an enormous opportunity to introduce significant land reforms. All in all, this 1986 publication helps explain the roots of the violence in Colombia today. Professor Zamosc does the world an enormous service by documenting how wealthy landowners manipulated political power in Colombia.

Book Description
This collection celebrates T J Byres' seminal contributions to the political economy of the agrarian question.
Four essays in the volume build directly on his work and four complementary essays address peasant politics and communist strategy in North China in the 1920s; globalisation and restructuring in the Indian food industry; foreign trade as a mechanism of economic retrogression in 'agriculture-constrained' economies; and the reasons for China's success and Russia's failure at the end of the twentieth century. Uniting the various themes of the essays is the demonstration of the continuing vitality and relevance of a critical, historical and comparative materialist analysis of agrarian questions exemplified by the intellectual project of T J Byres and its achievements.
