Another CD Fan.......2005-01-21
After being out of school for over 20 years, I decided to take the advice offered on this page in order to focus my preparation. I only used two study aids -- PowerPrep & this book. Like the other reviewers, I found the most value from the CD with its practice tests and explanations of correct answers. The CD lessons and book were marginal.
Over the course of three weeks, I tried to take a balanced approach by taking only two mini (category-based) tests an evening. On the weekends, I would take a simulated GMAT. As noted in the other reviews, these tests are far more challenging than the PowerPrep test. I had to keep reminding myself of that in order not to get too discouraged. I took the test today and the extra effort was rewarded with a 710.
The CD is worth it.......2004-08-21
I just took my GMAT and would like to share my experiences with the study aids that I had used. I had bought the usual ETS guide, the Kaplan 2004 with CD Rom, ARCO GMAT 2005 with CD Rom and, to try out something different, Ace the GMAT by Brandon Royal. I'll discuss two of the books I used.
1) The Kaplan CD (the irritating toddler level presentation of the CD apart) has the toughest CAT exams. The tests are tough and designed to discourage you.
I got 640,580, 600 and 620 in the 4 CAT's, but thanks to previous reviewers of the CD, I didn't lose heart since I knew that my score would be better on the real GMAT.
I got a reasonable 710 on the real test.
But do practice with these CAT's...the real GMAT is not easy. Practicing with tough questions will really help you think faster over time and not freak out when you see a particularly weird question on the real test.
Also, the mini tests and the diagnostics do not give you enough time to finish them..but they are still some of the best questions to practice on.
The book however, is not as good as the CD. ARCO does a better job of explaining the strategies and answers.
2) Ace the GMAT, by Brandon Royal : This book is great for verbal practice as it breaks down Sentence Correction and Critical Reasoning into "problem types' and is very very comprehensive. When I started preparing for the GMAT two months before I was due to take the test, I had no idea about the verbal content.
My native language is not English and I had never really learned english grammar at school. I can say that it's this book which put my fears to rest and showed me step by step, that even tricky grammar can be mastered in a short while....at least enough to do well on the GMAT. I got a 96th percentile on verbal and I attribute this score to this book.
The other great feature about this book is the Analytical Writing portion.
The essay structures are simple and can be easily reproduced and make scoring a 5.0 or better easy on the real test.
Princeton book is much better.......2004-08-13
The 2004 Princeton review book has MUCH better tips and tricks for taking the GMAT. Their review is more in-depth and straightforward than the Kaplan book. I went through the Kaplan book first and often found it confusing or not going far enough with their explanations. Then, I went through the Princeton book and was surprised at how everything seemed much more useful. The CD in the Kaplan book is nice because it helps you to get your timing on questions down, but overall, the Princeton book is much better.
dont worry about the scores.......2004-06-21
The material of the book is of a tough level and should be only done for practice. I scored 620, 630, 640 and 700 on the Kaplan tests and 740 on the real test. The good thing about Kaplan is that the questions are real tough and one has to master these tough questions to get a high score. The bad part is that the low scores a person gets can lower ones confidence. Good thing that I had read reviews after taking few of the tests and that had made me feel better...
Overall the ETS book is the closest to the real GMAT although the tests in ETS are somewhat simpler....I had taken those tests too long back and had scored 690, 710 so dont really bother....another piece of advise - on the real day take the questions one by one no matter how u think u r performing....i had thought i had screwed my exam big time and was expecting a 660-670 when i actually saw 740...there are a lot of experimental questions and the better u r doing the more the chances that the experimental questions would be having ambigous answers...All the best!!
Dissapointing CD, mediocre book.......2004-06-18
This book really adds very little to the information already dispened in the official GMAT guide. The CD is particularly bad. The animation is cheesy, slow and annoying and the content is quite removed from the content on actual exams. In the answers to many of the CAT exams presented on the CD, the author will advise you that your time is better spent "going back and reviewing the answers you provided to previous question" which is quite contrary to the nature of GMAT CAT exams where you are not able to go back to a question once a final answer is confirmed.
There are some useful tricks and shortcuts on the CD, so definitely go ahead and purchase it, but this should only be used as supplemental material and not as your main study guide.

The book provides a way to stretch your mind and push your GMAT score even further. The questions on actual test are much easier than in this book (ironically, though, if the questions on the exam seem hard, this is probably because you've read that book, and thus got the very first questions right without any problem, so adaptive GMAT test threw at you tougher questions as a result). The book is well organized and it is easy to find the required sections to practice in. Overall rating - excellent.
Useful, but has some draw backs for non-native speakers.......2004-10-28
I've bought Kaplan 800 after I spent a month with Princeton review. Found useful, math section is good. May be it duplicates regular Kaplan questions, but as I did gone through Kaplan, it was interesting for me.
Overall verbal section is concise and clear. However, sentence correction section is a bit odd for a non-native speaker: comments like "You can pick a wrong idiom as you spoke English throughout your life" sound a bit frustrating. The result, however, has quite good: 700 after one month of preparation with those two books (math 46, verbal 40)

The Math Sections -

The most important piece of information that is excluded from the editorial overview is the fact that most - if not all - the questions included in the math sections appear as part of tests given in the CD-ROM attached to the main preparation book Kaplan offers called "GMAT". In other words, the math part of this book is a printed edition of many questions that are explained exactly in the same way in the CD.
There is no any substantial additional material, except for a forward before some questions, emphasizing their exceptional difficulty, and occasional notes indicating how "an 800 test taker" would deal with the questions.
In all, I wouldn't recommend this book to somebody who wants to improve his math skills if he's already bought Kaplan's excellent "GMAT" with the CD-ROM.
The Verbal sections -

I can't say here what I said above (about the same questions given in both this book and the CD-ROM of "GMAT") because I haven't completed all the exercises offered in the CD-ROM. As for the material itself, it seems that the writers did very well in here, since there is an in-depth analysis of the hardest types of questions in the critical reasoning, reading comprehension and sentence correction.
To sum up, if your weak link is your performance in the verbal sections - and if you prefer written material to a computer screen - this book can be of help (though you should check out first their outstanding CD-ROM, that offers more material than any other CD I've tried, and decide whether it's enough or not).
Very strong Critical Reasoning (Logic) section.......2004-03-08
This book is meant for the high-scorers. The Data Sufficiency, Problem Solving, and Critical Reasoning sections are very useful. The Sentence Correction section explanations have some problematic explanations, especially on the idioms aspect. The Reading Comprehension section passages are not very GMAT-like, but still useful. If you already own the LSAT 180, be aware that the Critical Reasoning sections are virtually the same.
Book Description
Phadke was trained in robust design techniques by Genichi Taguchi, the mastermind behind Japanese quality manufacturing technologies and the father of Japanese quality control. Dr. Phadke has written the most clear book on the Robust Design method. I was able to follow the book with medium statistical and engineering knowledge and gained valueable knowledge. This is a must read for all engineering managers!
How to do Robust Design.......2001-09-11
Phadke gives a versatily, easy to read introduction into the on-target philosophy and the Quality Loss Function.
Many examples are taken from real case studies (e.g. from Xerox and ITT), covering mechanics, electronics and computer systems. These are good to inspire your own improvement projects.
Unfortunately, the most verstile characteristic is not treated (dynamic characteristic).
A good starter for engineers getting into Robust Design........1999-04-07
This is one of the earliest books on the subject. It gives an attractive treatment of the concepts and techniques of Robust Design, but is by now dated in view of the ideas that have been advanced and discussed among the professionals in the past decade. I look forward to a new edition of the book.

Great book for practical applications.......2002-03-29
I bought this book hoping to learn DOE using Taguchi Methods and apply what I learned to real life problems in my work. It was very helpful. Not only did it help me learn the methods I needed to perform my testing at work but I did it in only 8 days of reading. The book was very easy to read and the examples helped me understand everything I needed to know to apply this method to real situations. A great buy for anyone looking to learn Taguchi Methods.
An Introduction to More Effective Experimentation.......2002-02-20
The challenge that all research directors and senior scientists face is that virtually all scientists are originally trained to believe that the only proper way to conduct an experiment is to vary only one factor at a time while holding all other variables fixed. This belief, which can be shown mathematically to be totally incorrect, has been a drag on the scientific community for decades, causing experimental science to be much less productive than it should be. In fact, by properly designing experiments in which several factors are varied in a carefully thought out, predetermined pattern, much more information can be obtained with far fewer experiments.
What Dr. Roy has achieved in his book on experimental design is to clearly explain why this is so and to provide the tools which allows his readers to overcome their ingrained beliefs and adopt a more effective method of designing their own experimental programs.
Of particular interest is his discussion of experimental design using orthogonal arrays (Chapter 4) for it is in this part of the book that the full power of modern approaches to experimentation become most evident. Here, he illustrates how a set of as few as eight experiments can be used to determine how three presumable independent factors, such as time, temperature and concentration, can be studied to obtain detailed information not only on how each factor individually effects the quality of the final product, but also on the extent to which the factors interact.
Historically, learning this type of technique for designing experiments has been a daunting task since somewhat tedious mathematically manipulations are required for both the design of the experiment and the analyses of the resulting data. However, included with Dr. Roy's book is complete software which eliminates the need for the experimenter to either manually solve the handful of equations needed to extract the results in useful form, or to develop custom spreadsheets in an attempt to automate the process. The software is easy to use and includes all of the tables and data which are used in the book to illustrate the principles of experimental design. The software is also capable of assisting the experimenter in designing sets of up to eight concurrent experiments, rapidly analyzing the data and generating graphical and tabular presentations which greatly aid in the interpretation of the results.
This is an extremely useful book which can have a major beneficial effect on the productivity of any laboratory engaged in experimental process research such as crystal growth, chemical synthesis or manufacturing. By allowing the reader to overcome his innate aversion to varying more than one experimental factor at a time, the book makes it possible for the reader to become a much more productive scientist or engineer and become a role model for his coworkers to emulate.
Must have for Quality Control Professionals and Educators.......2002-02-05
First, I completely agree with all the good things mentioned in the other reviews, but wish to add the following comments:
1. The discussion group (usenet) hosted by Dr Roy is fantastic. If by chance you don't "get it" from reading the book, a simple question posted to the usenet frequently gets you an answer, often within a few hours (its a vocal crowd!!). Many times, the author himself responds to usenet questions. And, on at least one instance, after I repeatdly asked my question, he began exchanging emails with me, which then led to some pleasant phone disscussions.
2. User friendly software and support. See above.
3. Taguichi is frequently attacked by full blown Design of Experiments statistical types who miss the whole point. I strongly encourage all professionals interested in gauging quality control to try out his books and the free software downloads....

Dr.Roy's book is amazing. He has covered almost everything you need to know about the Taguchi method - even meticulous things. This book will suite both for beginners as well as for experts. The CD which comes along with this book is very helpful in understanding the concept behind the analysis with more than 50 examples. If at all you are looking for a book about Taguchi design of Experiments - I highly recommend one and all to buy Dr.Roy's book and benefit through his work.
I started as a beginner and now Iam an expert in Taguchi analysis - and the credit goes to Dr.Roy - he also helps personally in answering your questions.

Excellent primer on Robust Engineering... how to book.......2004-05-11
This book is quite readable, considering the topic, and does an excellent job of explaining the high level strategies of Dr. Taguchi's approach to optimization and experimentation. It also covers tactical issues like how to determine your ideal function and noise strategies.
I've had several classes on this subject but found that the book helped clarify some of the finer aspects of the strategy and helped explain why the strategy should work. (e.g particularly the strategy for dealing with interactions).
This book would not be sufficient to teach most people Robust Engineering, but it is a great reference.
How to learn Robust Design.......2001-09-11
I like this book because it gives a very good introduction into the concepts of noise- and control-factors. It treats the concept of "energy transformation" good, which is important to find the appropriate Ideal Function for your product.
The examples are quite nice and most of them are illustrated by the p-diagram (parameter diagram). Unfortunately, examples are mainly form mechanical engineering. For me this is no drawback. Others may want to have a look on dedicated case studies from their field.
To my taste the formulas presented appear a bit uglier than they really are.
If you want to learn, how and why to use Taguchi's method, this book is an excellent tool for self-learning.
