Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Smorgasbord of NLP.......2001-06-29

The author uses the format of ten training lessons for 11 different characters from a company called Whizzitts Ltd. He adopts a conversational approach and prescribes many exercises as handouts. Readers must follow the book as if you are one of the participants and must be willing to do the exercises (many with the need of one or two partners) to really benefit from the book.

I wonder how many will be able to follow the exercises and seriously do them. It is also rather contrived to have the characters as if you were in a workshop. You are not. There is quite extensive coverage or collection of NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) and related material, including Fractal Language Model by John McWhirter, who wrote the Foreword. But the book falls between the stools of a real introduction to NLP and a proper manual for a workshop.

Those giving workshops, esp. in NLP, can probably pick up some useful exercises, though most of them are borrowed. It is ironic that a book titled "Communication Excellence" fails to help the readers to achieve much real understanding. With the mushrooming of NLP books, both introductory and more advanced, there are certainly many other better choices. [Cf. my other reviews.]

2 out of 5 stars Weird - and I do mean "weird"!.......2001-02-22

Who's idea was it, I wonder, to stick all three sets of eyes on a single head to illustrate the "visual accessing cues"? And who drew the blind man's version of and Escher-type structure?
Who ever it was, and why ever they did it, they certainly added nothing of any value to this book - which really needs all the help it can get.

A basic introduction to NLP this most definitely is not.
Presumably because there are already so many books of this kind on the market, the author has tried to add some uniqueness to his text by framing the whole book as ten one day courses delivered to a group of senior executives of the hypothetical Whizzitts Ltd. (The company makes, surprise, surprise, 'whizzitts' - though we never discover what whizzetts are (high speed widgets, perhaps?)).

Its an interesting idea, and it throws up some useful possibilities for readers who plan to train others in NLP skills. As a standalone DIY book for managers, however, regardless of whether they have any prior knowledge of NLP, even 2 stars is verging on hysterical overgenerosity.

The author has what I would describe as a delightfully "English eccentric" style. Unfortunately, whilst this makes the text very readable, it is not a style well-suited to clear explanation. At one point, for example, the author introduces a two page handout on John McWhirter's "Basic Fractal Language Model" which he then 'explains' in less than one full page of text. The description of 'anchoring', on the other hand, goes on for several pages yet never explains exactly how to set an anchor; indeed, it doesn't even say when an anchor should be set or released.

In short, a quaint oddity But with very lttle to recommend it in comparison to long established favourites...

The Team at Wilmott is very proud to present this compilation of Wilmott magazine articles and presentations from our second year. We have selected some of the very best in cutting-edge research, and the most illuminating of our regular columns.

The technical papers include state-of-the-art pricing tools and models. You'll notice there's a bias towards volatility modelling in the book. Of course, it's one of my favourite topics, but volatility is also the big unknown as far as pricing and hedging is concerned. We present research in this area from some of the best newcomers in this field. You'll see ideas that make a mockery of 'received wisdom,' ideas that are truly paradigm shattering - for we aren't content with a mere 'shift.'

    We know you'll enjoy it!

        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource.......2005-09-07

This comprehensive text provides a thoughtful overview of most of the major issues in bioethics that intersect with the American judicial system. The legal citations are scholarly and the organization allows both the student and practitioner (legal or medical) a logical approach to a myriad of thorny issues.

The writing is quite approachable but some of the legal terms might be inscrutable to a reader with no prior legal training. For many who might utilize this book, this shouldn't present any difficulty.

          Book Description

One of the transformations facing health care in the twenty-first century is the safe, effective, and appropriate integration of conventional, or biomedical, care with complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, massage therapy, herbal medicine, and spiritual healing. In Healing at the Borderland of Medicine and Religion, Michael H. Cohen discusses the need for establishing rules and standards to facilitate appropriate integration of conventional and CAM therapies.

The kind of integrated health care many patients seek dwells in a borderland between the physical and the spiritual, between the quantifiable and the immeasurable, observes Cohen. But this kind of care fails to present clear rules for clinicians regarding which therapies to recommend, accept, or discourage, and how to discuss patient requests regarding inclusion of such therapies. Focusing on the social, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions of integrative care and grounding his analysis in the attendant legal, regulatory, and institutional changes, Cohen facilitates a multidisciplinary conversation about the shift to a more fluid, pluralistic health care environment.

This book was very poorly written. It seemed to have no direction or true goal, other than an outlet for the author's feelings. He posed half the book in the form of questions. Then, the other half, interspersed throughout the paragraphs of questions, he gave brief answers to the questions based on his feelings. Most issues were mentioned, but none were truely addressed.

                Book Description

This groundbreaking volume is the first to analyze how and to what extent bioethics considerations influence today's judges. Previous books have attended to the law that governs bioethics problems, but Bioethics in Law is the first to examine when and how bioethical issues impact judicial reasoning and decision-making.

The author undertakes careful analysis of health care committee recommendations, institutional review board determinations, bioethics commission reports, bioethics research materials, briefs of bioethics amicus curiae, and bioethics expert testimony that has been used in legal proceedings during the last decade. Through such examination, Bioethics in Law is able to offer critical insight into the ways that judges have invited, accepted, relied on, followed, critiqued, ignored, rejected, overridden, transformed, and otherwise responded to bioethics communications. This volume is the on the cutting-edge of the relationship of bioethics to law, and explores how law receives, assesses, and uses bioethics. Unlike previous treatments, which perceive the relationship between law and bioethics in an abstract or idealized sense, this book presents actual communications that have found their way to law, and then analyzes their effect on judicial outcomes.

                  Book Description

American law, not philosophy or medicine, is the major force shaping American bioethics. This is both because law at its best fosters individual rights, equality, and justice, and because violation of the legal duty or "standard of care" a physician owes a patient can lead to a malpractice suit. The law has therefore had two conflicting impacts on medical ethics: the positive effect of eroding paternalism and replacing it with a patient-centered ethic; and the negative effect of encouraging physicians to be more concerned with avoiding litigation than doing the "right" thing. Standard of Care explores the fundamental value conflicts confronting medicine and society by examining courtroom resolutions of real bioethical disputes, often of constitutional dimension. This case-based approach, which ranges from abortion to euthanasia, from AIDS to organ transplantation, from genetic research to the artificial heart and rationing, illuminates the value choices with which the power (and impotence) of medicine confronts us. George Annas urges health care professionals to go beyond the minimalist legal "standard of care" by promoting a vigorous, patient-centered medical ethics based on respect for human rights and responsibility to both patients and society. If modern medicine is to enhance human life, a reconceptualization of law as the beginning of ethical discourse, rather than as an instrument to end it, is essential. Such a discourse could enrich all our lives by helping us to articulate both a national and international agenda for human rights in health.

                    Book Description

A household icon of the environmental movement, Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) may be the most quoted conservationist in history. A Sand County Almanac has sold millions of copies and his lyrical writings are venerated for their perceptions about land and how people might live in concert with the whole community of life.

But who is the man behind the words? How did he arrive at his profound and poetic insights, inspiring generations of environmentalists? Building on past scholarship and a fresh study of Leopold's unpublished archival materials, Julianne Lutz Newton retraces the intellectual journey that generated such passion and intelligence.

Aldo Leopold's Odyssey illuminates his lifelong quest for answers to a fundamental issue: how can people live prosperously on the land and keep it healthy, too? Leopold's journey took him from Iowa to Yale to the Southwest to Wisconsin, with fascinating stops along the way to probe the causes of early land settlement failures, contribute to the emerging science of ecology, and craft a new vision for land use.

More than a biography, this articulate volume is a guide to one man's intellectual growth, and an inspirational resource for anyone pondering the relationships between people and the land.

5 out of 5 stars A surprising, penetrating, lyrical study.......2006-11-06

Readers who think they know Leopold, whether from his classic A Sand County Almanac or from earlier writings about him, are in for a real surprise. We see here, far better than ever before, the science underlying Leopold's conservation thought; he was at the forefront of ecology, not merely a consumer of it. Even more, we see how Leopold moved step by step to the (for him) painful realization that true conservation was not possible without significant cultural change, which in turn required committed conservationists to step up and challenge dominant values and institutions. Newton shows clearly that it was Leopold's idea of land health, not his land ethic, that stood at the center of his mature conservation thought. She shows how land health, once carefully crafted, transformed his thinking on nearly every aspect of conservation. And she explains vividly-- far better than any other scholar--the precise meanings that Leopold attached to his famous ethical admonition to preserve the land's "integrity, stability, and beauty." Why did Leopold resist the federal conservation programs of the New Deal Era? How did he redefine wilderness over the final decade of his life and reshape his chief reasons for protecting it? What did he view as the main goals of wildlife management, and why did he turn against many basic assumptions in his classic book Game Management? What kind of startlingly new ecology text did he have in works when he died? These and other questions are answered for the first time, in this major work that is brimming with new information and new interpretations. The most sobering realization one has, though, upon finishing this splendid book, is that today's conservation cause might cite Leopold often but hardly at all understands who he was and what he thought. This is not just the best book we have on Leopold, it might well be the best book we've had on any conservation intellect.
