As we approach the end of the century, the paradigms that once guided career choices are less widely applicable. Because most workers can no longer expect job security, consistent promotions, or even a clear career path, tomorrow's success stories will be told by so-called career activists, according to Career Intelligence author Barbara Moses. Moses defines career activists as those who succeed in defining themselves apart from their organization and can widen their career choices through self- knowledge. Part generational analysis, part guide to self-marketing, Moses's book devotes considerable time to identifying areas of vulnerability, then suggests four key principles that will help you adapt and thrive in an uncertain world. After thousands of workshops, Moses has distilled her advice into these four points: Actively craft your own future; know and leverage your strengths; identify your core values; and be honest about your identity and abilities. "Becoming an activist is not a luxury. It's the key to your future career success," she argues. Should the pink slips in your mailroom begin to outnumber paychecks, the principles and advice championed by Career Intelligence may be the objective look at your skillset that even your closest friends hesitate to offer. Concise, simple, and actionable, this set of guiding principles is more relevant today than ever before. --Brad Doll

Book Description

In today's rapidly evolving corporate environment, the only certainty is change. Professionals in every industry face the very real possibility that after years of steady work they may find themselves downsized out of a job and competing with younger people for the same jobs. In order to survive, they must learn to ride the wave of change. "Career Intelligence" shows them how.

2 out of 5 stars Below Average.......2004-04-16

Ms. Moses' book is divided in two parts -- (1) description of new trends in the labor marketplace (perhaps the better part of the book) and (2) some suggestions as to how to navigate it.

The strength of the first part of the book is in the generational analysis of how the labor market and relationships between jobs, sorporations and people have changed from pre-baby boomers, to baby boomers to gen-X. The rest of the first part is a filler -- everybody who works knows that there is no longer such thing as life-long employment.

The second part of the book is where the author, in my opinion, falls seriously short! There is nothing new or original here. Much more practical of Ms. Moses' "What's Next". If you are looking for a career management book look at "The 5 Patterns of Extraordinary Careers"

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-03-29

The dwindling number of full-time positions and the increasing opportunities for "full-time temp" and project-by-project employment has changed the definition of the word "job." Barbara Moses clearly defines your career challenges in today's business climate and teaches you how to shape your career in an atmosphere in which the old rules no longer apply. The author sets out step-by-step strategies for adapting to these ever-changing career parameters, and her nicely written, insightful text won't make you feel like an unemployed has-been, but just like one of the gang. You'll relax in the face of her pleasant manner, helpful examples and intriguing anecdotes. We [...] recommend this book to people in all fields at all levels, since virtually no one (not even a CEO) is immune from the new marketplace. If you don't own the company you work for, this is how to stay light on your feet.

4 out of 5 stars perceptive, practical insights into today's workplace.......1998-12-21

This book is in a class of its own way above career guidance books that offer tips on how to write resumes or suggest "hot" jobs that you should choose.

Dr Moses writes intelligently about the stresses of managing your career in a world where all the rules have changed. There are useful sections on many aspects of today's workplace - I found the stuff on providing career direction to kids and the parts about Generation X ers in the workplace particularly helpful.

Whatever stage you are at in your career I think you will find something useful in this book. Overrall a wise, illuminating book that I would recommend not just to anyone looking for direction in their career but also managers in organizations who whish to understand what "career" has come to mean in today's workplace and help their employees recognize and acheive their career goals.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction .......2007-09-01

We recommend this book to our clients who want to learn more about global currency markets. It gives a great introductory overview and history of currency. Brief and well written.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME! THE BEST PLACE TO START!.......2006-08-28

Starts from the very basics. This is the first book I ever read on Forex. Got me off to a running start!

2 out of 5 stars You're better off reading something else..........2006-07-10

So many editorial reviews on Amazon are so far off the mark...and this book is no exception. Poorly written, poorly edited and of course poorly priced. The author spends too much time on his personal observations, which are highly subjective of course, but devoid of the poignancy that would justify such missives. He then moves quickly from one topic to the next, explaining none in sufficient detail.

Much of what he writes isn't very important to a trader and is probably obvious to a student of financial markets. Laypeople will learn something about the world of forex, but this cursory treatment lacks focus. They are better off reading a few focused books. The few pages devoted to interviews from successful traders were informative, but I found myself disagreeing with some of the "facts" (read: opinions) offered up. If you must buy this book, take what is written here with a grain of salt. Then go buy a serious book on the stucture of the foreign exchange market, on risk management and on trading strategies.

This book will not make you a better trader and it certainly isn't worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to the Forex Market!.......2006-05-02

This book definately gives the reader a good look at the intricacies of the Forex, but it is not the final step in your education of the Forex market. The Forex market is a world unto itself and by nature is a huge gamble for a private investor. This book is a great place to start. The author uses good examples to illustrate his points and doesn't assume the reader has a thorough understanding of macroeconomics.

    4 out of 5 stars Solid Basics.......2006-01-16

Author Peter Rosenstreich's short, concise guide is a neophyte's introduction to the world of foreign exchange trading. Its chief virtue is that it warns against trading if you don't have a strategy and some level of technology. Its chief vice is the suggestion that it is realistic for individual investors to expect to make money in the foreign exchange markets. The author cautions against the risks of the market (and gives good advice on spotting the most egregious frauds), but even to suggest that an individual retail trader equipped with an Internet connection, a news feed, a research source and a charting service can hope to succeed in Forex investing is a bit misleading. Perhaps, it would have been more enlightening if the author had discussed the competition that confronts the potentially foolhardy neophyte, in terms of equipment, technology and expertise. That said, readers will gain an elementary - but not really an insider's - acquaintance with the ABCs of the Forex markets and will learn the names of key agencies and approaches. We find that the book's most useful attributes include references to further reading that should deter novices from attempting to trade their own money in the foreign exchange markets. For solid basics, read on - but zip your wallet.

              Book Description

Does the seller of a house have to tell the buyer that the water is turned off twelve hours a day? Does the buyer of a great quantity of tobacco have to inform the seller that the military blockade of the local port, which had depressed tobacco sales and lowered prices, is about to end? Courts say yes in the first case, no in the second. How can we understand the difference in judgments? And what does it say about whether the psychiatrist should disclose to his patient's girlfriend that the patient wants to kill her?

Kim Lane Scheppele answers the question, Which secrets are legal secrets and what makes them so? She challenges the economic theory of law, which argues that judges decide cases in ways that maximize efficiency, and she shows that judges use equality as an important principle in their decisions. In the course of thinking about secrets, Scheppele also explores broader questions about judicial reasoning—how judges find meaning in legal texts and how they infuse every fact summary with the values of their legal culture. Finally, the specific insights about secrecy are shown to be consistent with a general moral theory of law that indicates what the content of law should be if the law is to be legitimate, a theory that sees legal justification as the opportunity to attract consent.

This is more than a book about secrets. It is also a book about the limits of an economic view of law. Ultimately, it is a work in constructive legal theory, one that draws on moral philosophy, sociology, economics, and political theory to develop a new view of legal interpretation and legal morality.
