      Book Description

Serial killers like Seattle's Ted Bundy, Maryland's Beltway Sniper, Atlanta's Wayne Williams, or England's Peter Sutcliffe usually outsmart the task forces on their trail for long periods of time. Keppel and Birnes take readers inside the operations of serial killer task forces to learn why. What is the underlying psychology of a serial killer and why this defeats task force investigations?

This is the first book of its kind that combines state-of-the-art psychological assessment experience with the expertise of a homicide investigator who has tracked some of this country's most notorious serial killers. The author also brings to the book hands-on best practices gleaned from the experience of other task forces.

Readers, both professionals and students, will benefit from the comprehensive and critical case reviews, the analysis of what went wrong, what went right, and the after-action recommendations of evaluators in the US, UK, and Canada.

      The book covers:
      * The nature of the psychology of a serial killer
      * How crime assessment profiling reveals that psychology
      * Why psychological profiles fail
      * How serial killer task forces defeat themselves
      * How the media can, and usually does, undermine the task force operation
      * The big secret of all serial killer investigations: police already have the killer's name
      * The best practices for catching a serial killer

      * Comprehensive case reviews of some of the US's and UK's most baffling serial killer cases
      * A list of best practices for serial killer task force investigators
      * Recommendations for how to manage comprehensive files and computer records
      * Practical advice on how to manage the media: what to say and not to say
      * Insight into what a serial killer might be thinking and doing to stay away from police
      * Recommendations for setting up and administering long-term investigations
      * Practical tips on how to maintain a task force's psychological edge and avoid defeatism

        Book Description

Increasingly, the public is becoming aware of the scale of the problem of violence at work and the different forms it takes--aggression, assault, sexual harassment, physical abuse, and homicide. The challenge of a violence-free working environment encompasses not only human rights but also labor, health and safety, and criminal justice issues. This book looks at existing legislation, guidelines, and practices and calls for a systematic approach to a problem that is now being taken up by more international agencies and that inflicts a heavy toll on so many workplaces.

5 out of 5 stars The Definitive Encyclopedia of Fraud.......2005-07-01

Former FBI agent and white-collar crime expert Joe Wells, founder of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, is one of the world's premier experts on internal fraud by employees, managers, and executives -- or what he calls "occupational fraud." Here, he provides an exhaustive but accessible and compellingly readable survey of occupational fraud and abuse typologies. Thus, this book, which is based on hundreds of case studies, is not only an excellent primary text but a fine reference for anyone with a professional interest in fraud detection and prevention.

With this book alone, Wells has done more than anyone to systematize the study of fraud. A must-read for fraud examiners and anyone else who deals professionally with occupational fraud risks.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-10-10

I think this is a very powerful book. It is an essential tool to the fraud examiners as well as auditors and security personnel. I think it is a great book for students as well in order to give them information about fraud and its nature and the dangerous consequences it makes. With the examples and cases explained in the book, it becomes a very reader friendly book. Finally, the book also includes tools and techniques for detection and prevention of Fraud..

                Book Description

This text departs from the problematic concept of "white-collar crime," which only emphasizes the status of the offender, by demonstrating that occupational crime is committed by those in all walks of life, using their legitimate employment as an opportunity for crime. Though the term "white-collar crime" is sometimes used to describe this type of illegal activity, Green presents a working definition of occupational crime and examines four subtypes: organizational occupational crime, state authority crime, professional occupational crime, and individual occupational crime. The text thoroughly describes major criminological theories, including sociology of law, and then applies them to specific kinds of occupational offenses throughout the book. Occupational Crime is a blending of academic theory, legal issues, anecdotes, case studies, empirical research, and policy analysis from the vast literature on occupational crime.

                  Book Description

This intriguing new volume provides an understanding of the various forms of antisocial behavior in the workplace and how they can be identified and managed--if not prevented altogether. Antisocial Behavior in Organizations includes analysis of the role of frustration in antisocial behavior, and discusses issues such as employee revenge, aggression, lying, theft, and sabotage. Whistle blowing, litigation, and claiming are also explored as types of behavior that may be considered antisocial even though their stated goal is perhaps prosocial. The book concludes by making connections between antisocial behavior and organizational climate--addressing the need for modification in the workplace to reduce antisocial behavior. Academics, students, and practitioners in the fields of management, industrial/organizational psychology, sociology, social psychology, legal studies and criminal justice will appreciate this collection of original essays written by well-respected experts.

This book explains why accountability for corporate crime is rarely imposed under the present law, and proposes solutions that would help to extend responsibility to a wide range of actors. The authors develop an Accountability Model under which the courts and corporations work together by having the law harness the internal disciplinary systems of organizations. In this way accountability would be achieved across a much broader front than would otherwise be possible.

This "Teaching Novel" has provided me insight on how to set free the creative thinking within our organization and allow individuals to find meaning and significance in their work. An eye-opening book that I highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the Exec Who Won't Settle for only Good.......2005-01-16

Using Fictional Characters relating to Jungian and Enneagram models, Mark Bodnarczuk, takes the reader on a journey exploring the inner self. In a unique approach to the "Corporate Book" Mark invites the reader to identify with one of the characters and discover their own internal conflicts that prevent them from fully experiencing their potential for excellence and success. Mark's book takes us a step beyond just identifying leadership traits and obstacles, to recognizing, understanding, and overcoming those obstacles to unleash our full potential. I am on my third read of Mark's book and discover new insights each time. His principles have helped me achieve greater success not only as a CEO, but also in my personal life.

5 out of 5 stars A great business book that reads like a novel.......2005-01-01

This book was one of the best books I've read in recent memory. The writer, Mark Bodnarczuk, uniquely used fictional characters to make a very complex subject enjoyable to read and easy to retain. His insights into how personalities affect work performance and teamwork were especially helpful. I've applied his principles in my organization and found them to improve teammwork, employee morale and organizational productivity. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires an understanding of human personalities, how people's personalities impact teamwork and how understanding personalities improves business performance.
