Book Description
Comprehensive, authoritative guide to MBA programs worldwide.
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2001-06-15
The best book I have seen in one year searching and investigating about MBAs,GMAT, European vs American programs, etc. If you are planning to buy this book, wait for the 2001 edition which should have recent data.
Don't waste your time looking up for another book, this is THE MBA BOOK.
for people who want some information on MBA outside US.......2001-04-08
Do not expect some key information about Harvard, Wharton or NYU. This book just lists about 200 MBA with a quick overview (2 pages) on each. If you want to apply to an MBA in Australia or in China, this book can give you all the basic information you need to know.
Thorough overview of MBA programs outside of the US.......1998-09-24
This book is a godsend to anyone contemplating one of the many top-notch MBA programs outside of the US. Bickerstaffe doesn't attempt to "rank" the schools, which seems to be the only way anymore that the US programs are described in the guidebooks. Instead, he provides factual information often difficult to locate anywhere else. I was surprised to find a book like this existed. Great find.
"WHICH MBA?" provides valuable information on MBA programs........1998-03-09
"WHICH MBA?" is a valuable source of information for understanding the student composition and curriculums of MBA programmes all over the world. I appreciated Bickerstaffe's focus on European programmes. Often it is very difficult to find information on programmes outside the U.S. "WHICH MBA?" does not attempt to rank MBA programmes or assess thier reputation. It merely provides facts.
Really useful!!!.......1996-11-08
I refer to the 8th edition, available since 1996.
A really useful guide. I strongly recommend it to each and every potential taker for the expensive MBA studies.

The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 11th Edition
ASIN: 0273663119 |
Book Description
The MBA is becoming a necessity for anyone wanting to explore new career opportunities, accelerate personal development and increase their salary, but taking an MBA isn't a decision that should be taken lightly.
There is a lot to consider, such as financing, choosing the right program school, format, duration, location etc. Finding the right program for the individual can make the difference between an enjoyable and rewarding experience, or an unhappy and frustrating one.
Which MBA? sets out to answer all the questions of a prospective student. For the first time, it also offers a ranking of the business schools included in the directory section, based on data supplied by the business schools themselves and by their students and alumni.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad for a quick start.......2003-03-19
This book gives a lot of usefull information about a lot of MBA programs, but I found a lack of top ten U.S. schools. Some of them are missing, there is a huge gap between the best schools and those ranked below. (Some of them are ranked below #100).
I prefer this book than browsing the net because at a glance you can have interesting information of many, many MBA's and the information is well organized. GMAT means, ratio applications/accepted, strong subjects, deadlines, number or students, main features, % of student body, all the basic information to get to know what an MBA may you offer and wheter it's appealing depending on your targets.
The europen chapter is better than anyone. The U.S. chapter is not wide enough, but not bad.
If you are deciding to which MBA you should apply, this book will help you to shorten your starting list and focus on 10 to 12 MBA programs. Then which one to choose it's up to you
Good International, Bad USA.......2003-01-25
This series used to contain "raw comments" from students which I found very interesting. Now, Business Week is the only one that publishes them.
Interesting statistics, good summaries. But pretty duplicative of any other book, web site, WSJ, BW, etc.
Except for international. Very highly recommended if you're looking at international schools off the beaten path.
Getting long in the tooth.
Great guide and now a great site.......2002-10-10
This is a fantastic guide to MBA programs for non-geographically challenged Americans. The first part of the book discusses admission requirements, the objectives of an MBA and the results of a global survey with academics, students and alumni. The second part provides listings of over 100 schools, including the biggest and best in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
In addition, they have just launched a website alongside the print guide...
Best guide we have found for European business schools!.......2002-07-06
While this book covers North American b-schools, it is particularly valuable if you are interested in a European business school. We particularly like the primary source research from the surveys. While we would have liked to have seen even more quotes from the purported 4,500 survey respondents, this is certainly the most authoritative source we have found for European, particularly British, MBA programs. Additionally, we have received nothing but positive feedback Which MBA? (both the current and previous editions) from our clients.
Best for people who want to study in Europe.......2002-06-26
Where American business schools are concerned, this book says really nothing new: it gives basic stats for admission, salaries, ; it describes the nuts-and-bolts of the curriculum, etc. There is really nothing in the way of editorial comments from students, faculty, recruiters, or for that matter from the authors. It's just the facts, mam.
The approach for European schools is the same, but I know of no other book that mentions more than even, say, half a dozen European schools. This book has about 100 pages of info on British schools (which is almost as much as they have for the U.S.) and almost as much again for "continental" Europe. So if you are interested in schools in Europe beyond the top six or so, you will actually need this book. It will be handy (but incomplete, since it lacks much qualitative information).
If you are a U.S. student (or intend to be), the basic Business Week guide gives the same basic information and adds a lot of qualitative info to. Buy it instead for this country.

Book Description
Expert advice for those who want to create a solid company
Through hard work and determination Barnett Helzberg built his small family owned business-Helzberg Diamonds-into a successful company that caught the attention of Warren Buffett. Buffett was so impressed with the business that in 1995 he decided to purchase Helzberg Diamonds through his holding company Berkshire Hathaway. Helzberg shares his thirty years of experience in running a successful business and outlines the steps needed to prosper within a challenging business environment. Through "helpful hints" and words of wisdom, Helzberg offers a proven road map for entrepreneurs and business owners looking to build a solid company that will stand the test of time. What I Learned Before I Sold to Warren Buffett is a comprehensive guide that will help readers get their businesses on the right track.
Barnett C. Helzberg Jr. (Kansas City, MO) was President of Helzberg Diamonds, Inc. from 1962 to 1995, a period during which he expanded his family-owned business to 143 stores in twenty-three states. His business practices have been a key ingredient to the success of Helzberg Diamonds.
Customer Reviews:
Great bits of advice in easy to read format.......2007-07-23
The former CEO of Helzberg Diamonds shares wisdom he has learned from over 30 years in business before selling to Warren Buffett.
I have read a lot of management books and this was one of the easier (less dry) reads. At less than 230 pages, with decent size font, and lots of 1/2 pages, most readers can get through this in a couple of hours. I mean this in a positive way. The author does not waste words or the readers time. Lots of valuable information in here and I highly recommend anyone interested in managing or running a business read this. Helzberg's integrity and genuine nature get across throughout the book.
There are references to First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently in here. That is a great book as well and its influence on Helzberg is clearly evident. Another book he references significantly is Good to Great. I have tried to read that book several times, but have always found it too boring to proceed through.
Over 300 helpful quotes, concepts and tidbits..........2006-05-11
Over 300 helpful quotes, concepts and tidbits of information that the author has accumulated throughout his 33 + years running and growing a business.
It seems like the last few books I reviewed mentioned the importance of understanding "opportunity costs". On page 9, "Every activity you undertake exacts the price of not being able to pursue alternative activities... Thus the cost of putting out fires where fires exist and putting fingers in dikes where leaks exist is extremely high in the sense of decreased progress or missed opportunities." Peter Drucker calls that "feeding the problems and starving the opportunities"
Barnett also touches on the importance of being able to execute.
On page 115 there is great advise about the importance of raising prices and the importance of doing so on a gradual scale, whether needed or not because when it is needed you may not be able to play catch up.
A few cool quotes:
"Surrounding yourself with dwarfs does not make you a giant" - Yiddish Folk Saying
Meaning always hire up.
Success
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of the intelligent people and the affection of children:
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better;
To help in leaving a better social condition;
To know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is success.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)
"In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy. And if they don't have the first, the other two will kill you.
- Warren Buffett
Chapter 63 is on "asking - not telling" It contains some great advise and a few notable quotes:
"I had six honest men-they tought me all I know: Their names were Where and What and When-and Why and How and Who.
- Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936)

Insightful!.......2004-03-02
In a book that is more almanac than business history, author Barnett C. Helzberg Jr. includes a bit of narrative, but this is not a discourse on what he learned as he developed his Kansas City jewelry store empire, not a case study and not a look at how the sale of his company to Buffett went (which might have been a dandy negotiations yarn). Instead, it is basically a sound collection of sayings, aphorisms and - now and then, it must be said - platitudes about what he knew before Buffett came along. This is not, therefore, a book that We recommend necessarily reading from cover to cover. Instead, keep it handy. Pick it up when you are stuck for ideas or guidance, and peruse it for experience and sense. If all the thoughts are not particularly original, that is part of their appeal. Like a Polonius of the Plains, the author is never at a loss for a nostrum. He reaffirms the sound, traditional principles that guided the steady and sure growth of his business. It worked for Warren; it may well work for you.
Sound advice, repeated again and again.......2003-10-12
I enjoyed the first third of this book. Barnett Helzberg seems like a neat guy with good integrity.
The second and third third were also okay, but only because it was the first third repeated a couple times.
Probably, he could have written a couple magazine articles instead.
Like Sitting at the Feet of a Guru.......2003-09-28
If you're an entrepreneur-at any stage of the development of your business(es), you're hungry for the secrets of the successful trail blazers who have gone before you. The opportunity to learn from someone who built a strong enough business to sell to the legendary Warren Buffett would be particularly valuable. This book offers that coveted opportunity.
The author did not build his business all by himself. His father and grandfather preceded him in building the three-generation family business of 143 retail jewelry stores in 23 states. A well-led executive team made it all work beautifully. Helzberg Diamonds set the standard for customer service, earning the loyalty of thousands of customers who contributed to the success of the enterprise.
Helzberg starts his book by telling us that he's a plagiarist. He's collected ideas from many other people, used them to grow his business, and shares them in page after page of philosophy and advice. The book is organized into six sections: Managing, Decision Making, Hiring, Inspiring, Communicating, and Focusing. Each section is a collection of short chapters that deliver this effective CEO's secrets, illustrated with examples from what he and his company accomplished. Each chapter's advice is complemented by a sidebar entitled "Mining for Diamonds"-pithy statements that provide powerful guidance for any business leader. Quotes from a wide range of gurus, mentors, and leaders, offer an additional dose of thought-provoking and inspiring words.
The book is easy for busy entrepreneurs to read. The chapters are short enough to absorb during a break-coffee, bathroom, or deep breath-and tightly written enough so you can glean the concepts quickly. A list of recommended readings and an index add value to the volume. The only feature that might have improved this treasure would be a complete listing in one place of all Helzberg's "Mining for Diamonds" advice. Too bad, you'll have to go through the book chapter by chapter to mine those gems for yourself. The experience will be worthwhile...and probably repeated a few times to gain the full impact of this down-to-earth, almost homespun, recipe book for entrepreneurial success.

Darn, can't find a copy to buy..........2002-10-25
I see Mr. Schloss has written other books of a similar nature - one on cookies, chocolate, pasta, and another using 3 ingredients for meals. Haven't checked those out but this cake book is great. Rich simple cakes, what's not to like? Going to try the lemon poppyseed today and I already have the ingredients for the sauerkraut cake and the sesame one. (Shucks, I'll just xerox the recipes I'm dying to try since I can't find a copy of the book).
Wish I could pay the... purchase price...Its worth it!.......2002-05-03
I just happened to have checked this book out of our local library and it is breaking my heart to return it!
I've gone from hearing,
"This cake tastes like bread, Ma" and
" Whats wrong with the cake, Ma?" and
"Jen, maybe our oven is a bit wonky"
To hearing this:
" This is the best cake EVER Ma!" and
" My goodness, Jeni, I have got to get this recipe from you!" AND my husband-- who usually claims to not enjoy baked goods--is eating his words---and my cakes now! I only wish that I could afford the... price tag! I'll just have to write down nearly every recipe in the book!
If you can afford this book----BUY IT!
Quick and Creative Versatility!.......2001-10-21
We do a lot of large group entertaining, intimate dinners for small groups, and carry dishes to church, school, and people's homes. This book is a must. With just a few ingredients and a little time, you can create something delicious and hold your head proud. I enjoy using various pans for an added touch. Sometimes I'll pipe a little lemon curd, fruit preserves,or fresh fruit on top to guild the lily. If you use an oval pan, around 3x9 or so, you can get two cakes from one recipe. That gives one to take to a friend and one to keep for yourself at home. I find the recipes very versitle, which is great, depending on what you have in stock. I highly recommend it. Enjoy!

An AWESOME Cookbook.......2001-09-09
I absolutely love this cookbook. Most of the ingredients can be kept on hand for those last minute dessert needs, recently discovered bake sale. The results are consistent and yummy. All recipes can be made using just a pot, a spoon and a baking pan so you will love the clean-up. This cookbook has a lot of variety -- some of my favorites are Amaretto Cake, Chocolate Almond Torte, and Vanilla Butter Cupcakes.
Simply The Best!.......2001-07-31
I have also never written a review for a book before, but I must say I couldn't pass this up! This is a staple in my kitchen. Whenever I have company, go over to someone's house, participate in an event, I know I can pull this book out of the cabinet and whip up something wonderful in under an hour. I hardly make desserts from anything else anymore, it's too much work!!! Bottom line: This should be a part of everyone's cookbook collection.
