      Book Description

Classroom Assessment embodies the notion that student evaluation is an integral part of teaching, not something merely done after instruction to measure what students have learned. The second edition of the book is designed to provide prospective and practicing teachers with: (1) a concise presentation of assessment principles that clearly and specifically relate to instruction; (2) current research and new directions in the field of assessment; and (3) practical and realistic examples and suggestions. The book's emphasis is on helping teachers understand the importance of establishing credible performance standards, communicating these standards to students, and providing feedback to students on their progress. For those who need to use classroom assessment techniques.

                        Book Description

For over twenty-five years, author Mary Greenwood has worked in careers that required expert negotiation. After becoming a professional union negotiator, she began to notice a specific set of rules people use to settle disputes. Greenwood compiles many of these rules in How to Negotiate Like a Pro: 41 Rules for Resolving Disputes, an easy-to-understand guide to negotiating any type of situation. Among these rules you will find the following:

                        • Focus on the goal and resist being distracted by emotions
                        • Request ground rules
                        • Avoid negotiating against yourself
                        • Do your research
                        • Know when to walk away

Greenwood lists each rule and subsequently offers a concise explanation on how and when to use it in your negotiations. She explains the emotional frame of mind you need for negotiations and reveals the preparations, strategies, and tactics required to close the deal. Telephone and on-line negotiations are also discussed.

Whether you're involved in a professional dispute with another business associate, your boss, or even an online seller, How to Negotiate Like a Pro will put you ahead of the game!

Mary Greenwood provides an essential tool to anyone with questions about negotiating disputes, whether they be big or small. It is clear, concise and excellent advice from a professional.

5 out of 5 stars Amy Milsted, Biology Professor, Akron, Ohio.......2006-10-03

Greenwood draws upon her extensive experience as a mediator to come up with a clearly written, succinct set of 41 concise rules for negotiating that are applicable not only to labor issues but also useful to everyday interactions with coworkers and family. This book is readily accessible to all because it is written in standard English, not in legal jargon. As one who is not familiar with legal terminology, I found the Glossary to be especially valuable, as are the other Appendices. For each of the 41 rules, Greenwood provides a sample script that summarizes how one can deal with this point. For example, Rule 31 - "Watch the other side's body language", with the script that follows " When he does not look me in the eye, I think he is lying." Many of the 41 rules should be, but often are not, a matter of common sense in dealing with others; Rule 41 - "Do not expect thanks or gratitude when it is all over."

I have found this book to be an excellent guide for reasonable rules regarding how to interact with others, whether they are supervisors, employees, students, friends or family. I recommend it highly.

"How to Negotiate Like a Pro - 41 Rules for Resolving Disputes" is a well-written book focusing on all aspects of everyday negotiation, not just resolving union disputes. The author, Mary Greenwood, has over twenty-five years of experience in all aspects of negotiation giving her the expertise needed to write a good book on negotiation.

The book is a very concise quick read with only 61 pages. Even so, the 41 rules are jam packed with valuable, common sense information. The rules are broken down into 7 chapters that cover: Are you ready for negotiations? Negotiation Strategies, Extreme Tactics, Closing the Deal and other types of negotiations. She even has a chapter covering everyday negotiations such how to deal with a spouse or ex-spouse, hotels and E-bay.

I really liked Greenwood's approach to each rule. She starts by stating the rule - for example - Rule One: Focus on the Goal. Don't be distracted by your emotions. Then she defines the rule, talks about its pros and cons and offers the best way to use it in negotiations. At the end of each section she also has a list of possible scripts that can be used with each rule.

The Appendices are also packed full of useful information. Appendix A is a glossary of terms that can be used as a reference guide when confronted with "negotiation" terms. Appendix B lists all the traits that make a good negotiator. Appendix C is a reminder list of do's and don't of negotiators. And Appendix D wraps the book up with a list of sample ground rules.

Mary Greenwood's simple approach to resolving all issues, whether union arbitration or setting up a custody calendar with your ex-spouse, make this a valuable book for most people. If you follow these rules, all parties should walk out of the negotiation feeling satisfied by the outcome. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve his or her negotiation skills.

4 out of 5 stars Read before your revisions.......2001-12-17

As known by its users; ISO 9000 certificates must be revised and converted into ISO 9000:2000 certificates before December'2003. The book explains changes in the standard in detail, therefore provides a very good understanding of the new version in an easy way. It must be read by internal and external quality auditors besides quality management educators.

                              2 out of 5 stars ISO 9000:2000 In a Nutshell.......2001-12-06

I believe this title is mis-leading, since it is written from the perspective of the 1994 standard. Comparing the old standard to the new is a excellent thought, but it should of been reversed. Infusing the old standard into the new, instead of the way it is layed out elements 1-20 interspersed with the new standard. If I were using this book as a resource in helping me capture the intent of the standard I would be sadly disappointed. This book misses the mark.

This is a handy guide for anyone who is already familiar with the 1994 version of the standard. For each of the 20 elements of the old standard, this book offers a summary of what's new (both clarifications and new requirements), what has stayed the same, and what's not included. The book also offers a brief discussion of process management (key to the structure of the new standard) and some tips for transition planning. This is a slender volume, 120 pages including the appendices and index, and it lives up to its title - it's simple and concise. As a transition aid, I find it helpful, brief and accessible.

"ISO 9000:2000 In a Nutshell" is a great reference guide and I recommend it to anyone facing the upcoming revisions to the ISO standard. The language in the book is very clearly written and easy to read. I particularly like the layout of the section comparing ISO 9001:1994 with ISO 9001:2000. It is easy to understand what requirements have changed and what requirements have remained the same between the revisions. This book will be well used within the next couple of years as we make the transition!
