Book Description
Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this volume focuses on the trust processes between people within organizations, with an emphasis on empirical studies.
Rational foundations and psychological motivations for trust are taken into account through conceptual and empirical chapters. The authors begin by summarizing a number of key elements from the literature, including how trust develops in time and how its development is affected by social-psychological phenomena. This includes the notion of `framing': the interpretive context in which actions are perceived and evaluated. A conceptual framework is then used to analyze trust and power in the internal relationships of the organization. The contributors take up this issue in an evolutionary analysis of competition between trust and cheating. The conditions for trust in teams, in terms of type of task and team composition are examined, and the effects on trust of different types of leadership are studied. In the concluding chapters, the relation between the control imposed by an expert system and the influence of users is analyzed, and the relational signaling perspective is used for a study of norm violation and sanctioning, which in turn is used to analyze trust and trouble.

A volume in
Research in Management
(Sponsored by the Southern Management Association)
Series Editors: Chester A. Schriesheim and Linda L. Neider, University of Miami
Power and influence are key processes in organizations, and anyone wanting to learn how to lead or manage organizations effectively must first understand the dynamics associated with such processes. One interesting but not surprising fact about knowledge in this area is that scientific theory and empirical research are not new, having first appeared about 50 years ago.
However, the rate of knowledge advancement in this domain has not been rapid, and there is still much to learn about organizational power and influence processes. Thus, this fifth volume in Research in Management is devoted to highlighting new theoretical and empirical perspectives that advance the frontiers of knowledge about power and influence in organizations.
The chapters of this volume are all related to power and influence, albeit conceptualized somewhat differently and dealing with different substantive domains. However, that these chapters represent interesting and important contributions to knowledge concerning power and influence in organizations, and that each should spark future research that will further enhance the field.
CONTENTS: Foreword, Chester A. Schriesheim and Linda L. Neider. What Do Managers Do When Subordinates Just Say, No?An Analysis of Incidents Involving Refusal to Perform Downward Requests, Bennett J. The Use of Power Bases in Different Contexts: Arguments for a Context-Specific Perspective, Diana E. Krause and Eric Kearney. Book Description
This two-volume collection presents the most important recent articles on empirical issues in industrial organization, related primarily to the analysis of imperfect competition.
The papers cover empirical analysis of non-cooperative and cooperative oligopoly, auctions, differentiated product markets, dynamic competition and entry, plus selected work on innovation, vertical contractual relationships, and incentive issues. New research in these areas relies on detailed data for specific industries, typically integrates modern imperfect competition theory into the empirical specifications, commonly uses structural empirical models derived directly from microeconomic theory, and applies modern econometric techniques. This work and the associated techniques play an increasingly important role in antitrust policy, market design and in newly deregulated markets. This collection provides an easily accessible source of the key papers on these topics, which are otherwise not readily available.
Empirical Industrial Organization will be of interest to policymakers as well as academics and students.

Book Description
This edited volume is derived from a conference held in honor of Charles Hulin's contribution to the psychology of work. His research has carefully developed and tested theory related to job satisfaction, withdrawal from work, and sexual harassment. Edited by Hulin's students, The Psychology of Work discusses research in job satisfaction. This research shows that job satisfaction plays an essential role in theories of organizational behavior. Formal models are used, such as item response theory, structural equation modeling, and computational models.
Three general and consistent themes in Hulin's research are represented in this book's chapters. The first theme is a focus on broad, general constructs, such as job satisfaction. The virtue of this approach is that a wide range of behavior can be explained by a small number of variables. The second theme involves the examination of the antecedents and consequences of job satisfaction. This theme is increasingly important because it ties research on job attitudes and job behaviors where links are consistently found to social attitudes and behaviors where links are rarely found. The third theme consists of Hulin's interest in the use of formal models to characterize and understand behavior.
This volume will be of interest to scholars and students in industrial/organizational psychology, human resources, organizational behavior, and management.
Book Description
Communication as Organizing unites multiple reflections on the role of language under a single rubric: the organizing role of communication. Stemming from Jim Taylor’s earlier work, The Emergent Organization: Communication as Its Site and Surface (LEA, 2000), the volume editors present a communicational answer to the question, “what is an organization?” through contributions from an international set of scholars and researchers. The chapter authors synthesize various lines of research on constituting organizations through communication, describing their explorations of the relation between language, human practice, and the constitution of organizational forms. Each chapter develops a dimension of the central theme, showing how such concepts as agency, identity, sensemaking, narrative and account may be put to work in discursive analysis to develop effective research into organizing processes. The contributions employ concrete examples to show how the theoretical concepts can be employed to develop effective research.
This distinctive volume encourages readers to discover and develop a truly communicational means of addressing the question of organization, addressing how organization itself emerges in the course of communicational transactions. In presenting a single and entirely communicational perspective for exploring organizational phenomena, grounded in the discourse of communicational transactions and the establishment of relationships through language, it is required reading for scholars, researchers, and graduate students working in organizational communication, management, social psychology, pragmatics of language, and organizational studies.
Book Description
In the current turbulent business environment, there is a premium on trust. It has become a much desired resource in business organizations, but at the same time it has remained a very elusive idea. How to build and preserve trust, how to cope with opportunism and distrust, and how they affect organizational performance are crucial problems. This original book is the first to offer a wide-ranging study of trust within and between organizations from the perspective of several social and management sciences. The specially commissioned contributionsmany from well-known expertscombine theoretical analysis of problems around trust with empirical study in a range of different organizations in contexts such as China, Japan, India, the US, as well as several European countries. The many issues covered by the book include the relationship between trust and power, trust and law, how to build trust where there was previously none, the impact of trust on performance, and the fragility of trust in different societal contexts. The wide theoretical scope, together with the range of organizational settings and the rich empirical detail of behaviour around trust and opportunism, make this an important and instructive volume.

Book Description
Applied Industrial Organization offers a perspective on the richness of empirical industrial organization studies. Some papers derive empirical implications from theoretical models, but other papers start from empirical evidence and construct a theory. Three major topics are explored: the role of innovation, the evolution of market structure and firms, and the determinations of performance. As the central force of market economies, innovation is the essence of competition and results in changes to market structures. Other forces driving the evolution of markets and firms are also analyzed. Finally, the determinants of profitability are investigated. In particular, characteristics such as price flexibility, successful lenders and monopoly regulation are examined.
Contributors include F.M. Scherer, Paul Geroski, John Hey, David Audretsch, Manfred Neumann, among others.

Customer Reviews:
Hits the subject from just about every angle........2006-01-11
I have liked all of the "For Dummies" books I have read, as well as a couple of books and tapes by Mark McCormack. This guy lives and breathes time management. Though dummies books are more like reading a textbook, they can be perused rather quickly. Planning, taking notes, assuming best and worse scenarios, dealing with the person who will make the final decision, etc.. There's a lot a person can do to make things go his/her way--especially when most people are just not willing to take the necessary steps. The author has learned, through the school of hard knock how to get ahead. And he has. This book doesn't miss a beat! I highly recommend it.
Wonderful Resource for Getting the Most out of Each Day.......2005-08-24
I read the condensed version of this book. I picked it up while waiting on line to buy groceries at the supermarket. If the full version is anything like the condensed version, then I am sure that you cannot go wrong with this book. The title caught my attention. I am sure glad that I bought the book because it really gives you some helpful advice about getting the most out of your day. For example, we all know about writing to do lists. But this book takes that idea a step further and tells you to actually schedule the time that you will be doing the tasks and to schedule the time that you will finish the tasks. I found that just by following this one piece of advice I was able to get more things done from my to do list. That's because work tends to expand if you don't have any idea how long it will take to get something done.
Only Use for Tips.......2003-07-11
If you've never read any other book on organization, time management, or efficiency, do NOT get this one. The author provides many useful tips, but not a "system."
The tone of the author is unfortunate. I have never read a book where I was so put off by the author. You know how Tom Cruise portrays Jerry McGuire at the beginning of the movie "Jerry McGuire"? That's what the author sounds like. Business is life, money is the bottom line, winning is everything.
The author, Mark McCormack, was the founder of the sports management company on which "Jerry McGuire" was based, so maybe that's where the similarity comes in. Whatever the connection, the tone of the book is that of an obnoxious braggart.
On more than one occasion, Mr. McCormack excuses bad behavior in favor of the results they achieve. The ends always justify the means.
With that said, there are some useful tips if you have already brushed up on time management and organization. If you have not, this should not be your first purchase. I would suggest: "Getting Things Done" by David Allen, "The Organized Executive" by Stephanie Winston, and/or "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey.
mixed.......2001-04-23
It is hard to argue with Mark McCormack's success. He's built up an almost billion dollar business. I will say that in another book, he said he takes only 3 day vactions. That if he took a 2 week vacation "I'd be so worried about my business at the end of the second week, it wouldn't be worth it." And he promotes working long hard hours. But I know more than one filthy rich self-made man, who are not retired but active in their businesses, who nonetheless do NOT work long hard hours year round, and take as much as a month off straight, while their businesses hum along nicely without them. I would say McCormack is failing in his methods of getting results if he can't at this point take long periods of time off, without worrying about his business. Richard Branson is active in his much larger Virgin empire, but he takes weeks off to go on those balloon expeditions of his. What is he doing right that McCormack isn't?
An example: In the book TIME TRAP (a time-management book I highly recommend) the author sites a salesman who made two goals for the next few years. The goals were to, each year, 1) double his income 2) double his vacation time. (!!) And the salesman succeeded, so that he doubled his income, as well as his vacation time, so that in the third year he had a lot more money, plus 6 weeks in vacation time. THAT'S what I call getting results!!!!
Harvey Mackay in one of his books sites a saleswoman he hired, who told him she worked 20 hours a week at her interview. Mackey told her, "But your resume says you did $2 million in sales at your previous job." She said, "I did. You can phone them and ask." Mackay did so, and they confirmed what she said. Mackay says to the reader, "So I don't care HOW many hours a week she works, with those kind of results."
Maybe it's the nature of a service business (which is what McCormack's management company is): you can't let a factory stamp out widgets while you do something else. You have to keep cracking the whip, or inspiring your subordinate agents, if they are what make-up your company. If that's the case, I'll avoid service businesses.
Take what works & leave the rest.......2000-08-31
Reading this book is rather like being beaten over the head with a club - for example, he asks (over and over) - Do you have your planing tool at your fingertips 24 hours a day? If not - you are NOT ORGANIZED!!!! Three lashes!
He writes for a different audience than I, one that has In and Out boxes on their desk (I've never seen In or Out boxes on anyone's desk, ever), that needs an introduction to the net and that makes phone calls all day (executives on the East coast maybe).
None the less, if you can handle being beated up by the author, he does have some good suggestions. He suggests planning not only what to do, but when to do it, which is probably the biggest win I'll get from the book. Every day I know my list is too long, but I start at the top & work down. I think that if I figure out when things will happen (even if the time spans are only guesses, since I don't know how long many things will take) it will help me to understand better what I can really accomplish & what I can't and thus, to focus my energy on what I can do.
So I'd say that if you want to make things happen, it's worth reading for the hints that work for you.
Book Description
An illustrated version of Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course, this book offers instructions that are clear, comprehensive, and pretty near infallible. The text is accompanied by a wide range of illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant cook book.......2007-01-02
This book is fool-proof. Everything I have tried from this book has always turned out well. It is such a relief to know that if you follow the instructions things will be fine! I have made the mincemeat and mince pies twice now for christmas and everyone loves them! I also made the rich cake in lieu of my usual christmas cake recipe. It was divine.
Can't go wrong with this one.......2005-04-21
Delia is as much a household name in Britain as Julia Child is in the U.S. These recipes will very much dispense with any myths about British food being tasteless and mainly boiled. Delia always graced my mother's cookbook shelf, and now years on I have my own greasy dog-eared copy that has become my kitchen bible. If you want an amazing desert that is simple to make, striking in presentation, and delicious to eat DO TRY the profiteroles recipe, and Pavlova Meringue.
Her instructions for making a proper roast dinner with crisp roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding are also flawless (although I like to do my puds in muffin tins instead:))
Leek and potato soup, italian baked fish, risotto, potatoes lyonaisse, marinated mushrooms... I could go on and on. Each recipe simple to follow, basic ingredients, european flair with minimum of fuss and delicious results.
Long live Delia!
From the mouth of a friend.......2004-02-11
I received this book as a gift when living in the UK back in the 90's and it has proven to be one of my favorite and most trusted. Delia's narration is what makes this very special, for example when she describes that her family comes from a long line of turkey farmers and then proceeds to share with us how to make the perfect bird utilizing varrying oven tempatures and foil pouch. The book reads like a novel and feels like it is notes from a friend's call on sharing a recipe. Very personal. The easy bernaise sauce is really easy and this combined with freshly grilled steak & asparagus has become our staple for entertaining. This book is not for someone who just wants a technical cook book, this book has personality and will become your friend.
A standard for everyone's kitchen.......2003-01-07
If a Brit has only one cookbook, it's likely to be this one. The recipes are all straightforward, and well within the range of the beginner. They are guaranteed to work, and her chatty style is engaging and reassuring. Having recently moved to the States, I'm looking forward to seeing how American "basic cookbooks" match up!
Very ordinate.......2002-12-14
This book is not what I expected. In my view, a great cookbook is one that manages to distinct itself from the crowd. None of this is evident here. This book is too wordy, not easy to follow or to search for receipts, basic cooking methods are not covered - just the more sophisticated cooking combinations with multiple ingredients, there are not enough pictures of the ready receipts or how to prepare them (don't be fooled by illustrated - this book is thin on images) and the receipts are rarely inspiring.
What is nice about this book is the fluent english of the author that makes a good reading - but if you're looking for a good cookbook - look elsewhere.
Book Description
Completely revised and updated, this cookery "bible" still contains all the established favorites such as Flaky Fish Pie, Christmas Pudding, and the secret of Crunchy Roast Potatoes. Delia has also added some new recipes like Stir-Fried Mange Tout and Roast Stuffed Goose with Prunes and Armagnac. Clear and comprehensive, the recipes are suitable for beginners as well as more experienced cooks. Delia also gives advice on new and widely-available ingredients like easy-blend yeast, filo pastry, and fromage frais.
Customer Reviews:
The Bible For Cooks!.......2007-01-09
This is our 2nd copy of the book as the old one was getting worn and tired through overuse!
If you're new to cooking we thoroughly recommend this book. Delia guides you through each and every step so, if you pay attention and follow, you will be rewarded with a good and tasty recipe.
If you're an old hand at cooking you'll love it too. It's a 'must' for every cook!
The great Ladies best work!.......2005-03-05
Well researched, easy to use, perfect for the the seasoned cook or novice alike. She even advices you on what to buy in the way of cookware, a big boon to many a wedding list!
It is a touch evangelical, Delia is always prone to giving you advice like a stern School Marm (so it feels like something you have to do rather than might do!) and this is reflected in her slighty dry, bossy and occasionalyy dreary writing, think cooking with a St Trinian's Head mistress if you have never seen Delia on TV. But I have to hand it to her, if you follow her recipes to the letter YOU WILL NOT GO WRONG!
Just curtail the cookware shopping list or do as she says and get a MUCH bigger Kitchen!

Look, Ma....I can cook!.......2001-01-16
Cooking is something I have always wanted to know how to do better, but could never find an appropriate resource to show me the way. I bought this massive book in a London bookshop, and have been using it frequently ever since. While some of the terminology uses "British" english as opposed to "American", which may have some of us running to the grocer to find out just exactly what that strange vegetable she is referring to is, the book is overwhelmingly useful and informative. Like the title says, it is a complete cookery course, and you learn more about the uses and methods of the various utensils and cookware than in any other cookbook I have seen. Granted, if you buy all of it, you need a bigger kitchen than I have just to store the pots and pans. Regardless, it's a fun as well as informative read, with practically everything you can imagine ever wanting to cook between its pages.
