Marketing is not usually a novelist's specialty. But unless you are among a very lucky few, you are going to have to market your book like crazy in order to get it published or even looked at. In The Sell-Your-Novel Toolkit, Elizabeth Lyon shares the wealth of information she has garnered as a book-marketing consultant and independent book editor. First, she says, make sure that your novel is good and ready; Lyon believes that "only one percent of the novels submitted for publication are both structurally correct and appropriately polished."

Once you have utilized all the resources you can muster to fine-tune your prose (writer's groups, freelance editors, books about writing, and long hours at the computer), you've got to start thinking like a marketer. You'll need a catchy title, an alluring synopsis, and a knockout query letter (writer James Axtell calls the query "the single most important piece of paper a novelist writes"). Lyon's instructions for synopsis and query writing are accompanied by several annotated examples. You will need to write and stick to a marketing plan, and you will need to research agents and publishers. Too many writers submit their work blindly, not understanding that "finding a publisher," as Lyon writes here, "closely resembles a job search. You wouldn't think of approaching a company about which you know nothing." Pay attention to who is publishing the kind of fiction you are writing; look on the acknowledgments pages of those books for leads on agents. And whatever you do, try not to get discouraged. After all, says Lyon, "substantially more people fail for lack of persistence than for persisting too long." --Jane Steinberg

I have the Sell Your Novel Toolkit" and keep it within arm's reach because I find it so valuable whenever I'm ready to resubmit my manuscript. I first met Elizabeth Lyon at a writer's conference and found her to be a profoundly wise yet down-to-earth woman with an expansive knowledge of the publishing industry. In this book, she shares with us her expertise through explanation, example, and recommended reading. I'm thankful that there are people like Elizabeth who make the road from writing to publishing much more easy to navigate. I highly recommend this book to anyone before they send out one query/manuscript.

5 out of 5 stars The secret sauce in using lists for profit.......2007-10-24

Ed Burnett does a great job in giving a very practical education on list usage. He illustrates many fundamentals but also shows some tricks used by the old masters at Sears catalog, Lands End and other premier catalogers. An example of this is how to use the last digit of the zip code in order to create a random sample that does not introduce bias into your mailing. This is a short cut that can be very useful when your mail plans have changed and you need to reduce your mail quantity at the last minute, without biasing the distribution.

This is a great reference book to have on your book shelf and can be applied to online lists and newsletters as effectively as it ever has been in traditional snail mail.

This digital document is an article from Bank Marketing, published by Bank Marketing Assn. on March 1, 1997. The length of the article is 3486 words. The page length shown above is based on a typical 300-word page. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Digital Locker immediately after purchase. From the supplier: Bank companies should make their mailing lists as attractive as possible to encourage recipients of direct mail to open and read the letter. This means that special attention should be given to the customers' names and addresses because misspelling them can de-motivate customers from entertaining these mailings. Duplication, where customers receive three copies of the same letter, can also be a turn-off. A good list sends a signal to the customers that their bank is paying attention to little things, such as punctuating their names properly and sending them a single letter.

                    Book Description

It is estimated that over one-half of all litigation today is related, in some degree, to issues involving economic damages. This handbook presents the basic elements involved in the evaluation of economic damages associated with wrongful death and personal injury cases. It will assist practicing attorneys to understand, through examples, the conceptual issues involved in the determination of economic damages, and the methods used to evaluated such damages. The book is divided into two main sections. The first section of the book is devoted to estimation procedures specific to wrongful death cases. Nine key elements involved in an analysis of economic losses are systematically presented and illustrated in separate chapters. Reference tables are included to illustrate the variety of situations which exist, and the impact that changes in key assumptions about the situations have on the analysis. The second section of the book builds upon the concepts developed in the first section, and illustrates how to calculate economic losses in personal injury cases. These chapters also have examples and reference tables to assist the practicing attorney. A glossary of basic economic terms and an extensive bibliography are included.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great Decision!.......2002-02-21

Going through Mr. McCann's book has been great and eye opening to say the least! So many of us spend (and waste) so much of our time going through "middle men". Mr. McCann clearly defines proven formulas that bypass these, and go straight to the top! Of course this enables you to direct your focus where it counts, thereby rescuing yourself from unnecessary rejection and undue emotional distress. The chapter on public speaking I found to be most helpful as well, as that can be a weakness for many of us. Thought you knew how to use telephones & answering machines ... think again! Mr. McCann does a wonderful coaching job on using these "necessary" devices correctly in the business world, and their importance to overall presentation of yourself, and how you are perceived. Thanks for a great book! Bruce Mayer, South Carolina Educational Television.

                          5 out of 5 stars I Connected!.......2002-02-07

I was a poor college student needing a job in a depressed marketplace. Getting through the door only to be herded to the back of the line was beginning to be highly frustrating. My Mom sent me this book by Mr. McCann after a friend of hers praised the unique and progressive ideas therein. Not only have I found a job, but I now apply the idea of "reaching the key decision maker" to all business. I now cut through red tape like it's butter, saving me time and ensuring peace of mind.

4 out of 5 stars Connecting with Key Decision Makers.......2001-09-19

In Connecting with Key Decision Makers, you will find tested, proven principles to communicate with the top brass. It is right on the mark in its proven methods for getting the person you are contacting to say "yes". Connecting with Key Decision Makers gives insights into the key values and issues of decision makers in person, on the Internet, through the written word and by the telephone thoroughly communicated with definitive techniques... A powerhouse of information done in a humorous and entertaining way...

Michael McCann presents so many great ideas in this one book that I am going to show the book to my sales and marketing acquaintances in associations to which I belong. Mr. McCann convinces me that being both professional AND unique (the author gives numerous examples) is the best way to build my business.

I gave my copy of "Connecting" to a friend looking for employment and my friend discovered that ideas in the book helped him reach the decision maker that finally gave him a better job than the one he left three months before.

Quality writing and numerous practical examples ...

                              Book Description

The results are in. The evidence has been analyzed. Research shows that the lack of enterprise-wide training is the biggest reason for ERP implementation failures. It is the single most important precursor to achieving success. Integrated Learning for ERP Success is the first resource to offer a specifically defined, comprehensive method for planning, delivering, and evaluating ERP training efforts. It even includes formulas for determining training return on investment. The Learning Requirements Planning (LRP) process presented involves a six-step enterprise-level instructional design model that when implemented correctly assures success. If you would rather have a root canal than oversee an ERP implementation, you are not alone. But like avoiding a root canal, avoiding ERP implementation only causes more pain. This book eases the implementation pain. It shows you how a formal plan for learning will increase the productivity of the ERP implementation team, shorten overall implementation time, and substantially decrease implementation costs. It also provides a discussion on how an ERP implementation can be used as a catalyst for lifelong organizational learning. Implementing an ERP system can cost three to ten times the actual software purchase price. You can't afford to waste money or time in the areas of ERP education. Integrated Learning for ERP Success shows you how to create learning-focused ERP implementations that provide substantial savings and the competitive advantage.

                              Book Description

Based on a profoundly important six-year study by the Center for the Quality of Management (CQM), "Integrated Management Systems" shows how successful organizations accomplish something unbelievably powerful: Creating their own particular ways of executing the scientific method. The authors worked with the cooperation of some of America's largest companies - Teradyne, Hewlett-Packard, Eastman Chemical, Ritz-Carlton -- and of non-profit organizations including top hospitals and the U.S. Navy. They were surprised to find how radically successful systems differed from one organization to the next.

Yet the core of each was universal: Each organization had designed a system that gathered data about the organization's particular problems, developed theories, tested the theories, and finally documented and shared the results throughout the organization. Each successful organization's methods were unique much as the methods of each successful discipline within the sciences are unique. But less successful organizations had nothing comparable. And the processes through which the leaders in these organizations had gotten them on the right path had a great deal in common.

If you read this book in conjunction with Kent Bowen's Harvard Business Review article 'Decoding the DNA of the Toyota Production System (Sept. Oct. 1999) you will get more out of both. The language and case studies are a little different, but the purpose is the same: to develop a system to utilize the scientific method in problem solving at every level of the organization. This book can take you through this complex world and tie together all the fragments we've been studying for years. Whether it's called lean manufacturing or operating systems or TQM, they are all systems that tie tools together in a common purpose. Understand: (1) how to tie it together, (2) how to teach and learn about it, and (3) how to implement it. This isn't a book with just one idea rehashed over and over; the devil is in the details, and this is filled with useful details that have been tested and proven effective. Before you set about trying to change or design your organization, read this book first. The only thing that I would have liked to see to make it better is a chapter on Toyota, the most benchmarked Integrated Management System in the world.

                                    Book Description

The scope of what we call operations management has expanded and diversified in the last 15 years. This growth has affected not only what is covered, but also how it is covered, and how this material is delivered to students. Value-Driven Operations Management is an innovative, modular text that presents an alternative designed to meet the challenge posed by professors of operations management who have voiced the need for an expansive, easily updated, customize-able treatment of operations management content. This "ground-breaking" modular text allows instructors to take total advantage of the many diverse approaches to teaching operations management in the new millennium. This is accomplished by offering modules covering both traditional and emerging topics in operations management, along with an introductory group of modules defining the theme of “value” that serves as a unifying framework for the series. A selection of frequently used quantitative “tools" rounds out the series, offering a complete course solution for virtually any operations management course. The modules are customized via an innovative web-based tool and printed on-demand.
