Great Reference .......2006-04-27
I found this book to be a great overview with lots of examples. It's been shared around our office over and over again!
Jam Packed with Samples.......2005-05-14
In addition to advice on how to write successful fundraising letters, this book contains hundreds of models, samples, and excerpts of actual letters. One section covers letters soliciting volunteer help. (summary by South TX Library System)
This book has 378 pages, so chances are very good that you will find a sample letter close to what you need. Inexperienced letter writers tend to be too wordy and turn off their potential funders. I really recommend that people pay close attention to the advice in this book.
The most frequently borrowed fund raising book I own.......2001-04-25
Chapter 15, Obtaining Substantial Financial Support with the Foundation and Corporate Request Letter, is the most dog-eared chapter of my copy. Government and non-profit colleagues whose core job and expertise is not in the area of fund raising, love this book.
moderately helpful.......2000-07-14
My pleasure in the book was minimized when I came to the sections on telemarketing, etc. . . not what I expected. The portions of the book that were helpful, were A-1.
Extremely useful shelf-reference for fund-raisers.......1999-11-18
Not only does this book offer real-life examples of letters for every conceivable fund-raising campaign and situation, it explains the structure of successful fund-raising letters. I refer to it frequently. 5 stars I reserve for anything written by Mal Warwick, who is in a class by himself. But 4 stars means I found Mr. Kuniholm's book well worth the money, repeatedly useful, practical, educational and wise.

Book Description
"Proactive." "Synergy." "Paradigm." Bingo!
There's an underground game undermining business and productivity in offices and boardrooms across America: Buzzword Bingo. How do you play? Make a bingo card, but instead of numbers use "corporate-speak," those vague, euphemistic words like the suit at the head of the table is spouting--"80:20," "incent," "empower." When one is spoken, mark it off; when you have five in a row, clear your throat and let others know you've won. Born in the Silicon Valley, the Buzzword Bingo phenomenon has spread globally. Graduating MIT seniors played it during Al Gore's commencement address. British Labour delegates play it while listening to Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Now this sneaky little pastime goes public in this snarky how-to humor book. The Buzzword Bingo Book is a complete guide to the game, providing an overview of strategies and rules, an explanation of why managers insist on using buzzwords ("It's like sniffing glue--they just can't help themselves"), nearly 500 definitions of buzzy terms (such as "404," "Siliwood," and "fungible"), and 50 ready-to-use bingo cards, to be copied or torn out on the spot. The Buzzword Bingo Book will help you leverage your content to make this game an action item for your next meeting.

Interesting book.......2001-06-05
Interesting book but don't let the upper management catch you with it.
Is a bit of a passing fad though.
An eyeopening view to our daily buisness jargon........1999-05-07
Dry, never ending, buzzword-idiots usually turn the boardroom "Daily" into a yawn-athon. Tired of trying to decypher the latest "Achrobuzzum"? I was, so I looked for an answer. I found it in the form of "The Buzzword BINGO Book". This book not only answered aukward research "buzzword bombshells" but took the parody of boardroom venacular to new levels of hilarity. A must for the soul of every; Boardroom, Power-Luncher, or After-hours participant, or just to stay informed... Either way, it brings another bit of fun in the day's "Race"... it sure did for me...
Good Job!.......1999-03-01

Book Description
In his first major book on the state of black America since the New York Times bestseller Losing the Race, John McWhorter argues that a renewed commitment to achievement and integration is the only cure for the crisis in the African-American community.
Winning the Race examines the roots of the serious problems facing black Americans todaypoverty, drugs, and high incarceration ratesand contends that none of the commonly accepted reasons can explain the decline of black communities since the end of segregation in the 1960s. Instead, McWhorter posits that a sense of victimhood and alienation that came to the fore during the civil rights era has persisted to the present day in black culture, even though most blacks today have never experienced the racism of the segregation era.
McWhorter traces the effects of this disempowering conception of black identity, from the validation of living permanently on welfare to gansta rap's glorification of irresponsibility and violence as a means of protest. He discusses particularly specious claims of racism, attacks the destructive posturing of black leaders and the hip-hop academics, and laments that a successful black person must be faced with charges of acting white. While acknowledging that racism still exists in America today, McWhorter argues that both blacks and whites must move past blaming racism for every challenge blacks face, and outlines the steps necessary for improving the future of black America.

An Irresistable and Refreshing Voice.......2007-07-09
A year later - 2007 - am just finishing up reading this reader-friendly, excellently researched and provocative piece. I want to thank Mr. McWhorter for unabashedly telling all of us how "'tis" down here on the ground. My ears got warm because I saw myself years ago passionatly engaging in therapeutic alienation; but always nagged by emptiness and questions of "Why" and "What for".
I challenge institutions of learning - both secondary and post-secondary -to require reading this and other works of McWhorter, if only for their unabashed honesty. There IS an elephant at the dining table. Thanks.
Passionate careful scholarship attacking standard liberal views.......2007-03-28
The title of this book is misleading. It makes it sound as if McWhorter is going to argue for a new approach to solving racial issues in America. He does not. This is not a postive book, with a new agenda.
Rather, this is a negative book, which focuses upon demolishing standard liberal ideas. McWhorter argues that, since the Civil Rights Movement, blacks have gotten trapped into a phony politics of perpetual rage for its own sake. They are always posturing, he argues, as a way to avoid grappling with the difficult realities of a post-Jim Crow world. In this new world, he argues, blacks are not blocked by formal discrimination. Rather, they are blocked by their own self-destructive habits. To avoid acknowledging this, they have to act as if Jim Crow were still in force. Since this is not true, their entire style of politics has become deeply dishonest and disconnected to reality.
This book covers alot of ground. One thing that he does that should be mentioned is to empirically demolish Professor Wilson's well-known deindustrialization thesis. Wilson argues that the reason for the persistence of black urban poverty is that the jobs all left the cities, and left inner city blacks high and dry.
Nonsense, argues McWhorter. He presents evidence that the real problem is the spread of all of this theatrical black rage, and the withdrawal of many blacks from trying to make it in the economic world.
I can not assess the empirical evidence back and forth, but McWhorter does a very detailed study, in refutation of Wilson. An important book.
Good book but long read.......2007-01-12
This book is well researched and has a lot of information but is a long read. I feel it could be more readable (less academic) to appeal to a larger audience
Very Enlighting and honest from an insider.......2007-01-10
I saw John McWhorter on a PBS news show and was taken back by the way he explained the issues of Black Culture based on his book and that prompted me to buy the book. I think it helped that the host of the show (who is white) seemed befuddled by John's explanation of the impact of Black Culture. I would have responded the same ways as a white person who has had minimal exposure to Black Culture. White folks do not always get straight talk about the Black community and because of that can not understand the root causes of problems faced by Black folks in today's society. Seems that Black Leaders are always trying to find blame for Black Folks problems based on racism and changes in the economy, etc. That approach seems to cause more problems then it fixes and will never allow real integration of the minds and hearts.
The book goes into great detail about Black culture but one thing I liked was John's honesty and sincerity that made me feel like John was talking to me to explain the real issues that affect Black folks in today's society. I read both of John's books, "Losing the Race" and "Winning the Race" and I felt like John was really trying to cut away the BS and show why there are problems in the Black community and they have nothing to with racism or the big bad white man wanting to keep the Black person down. Using facts like the percentage of Blacks in prison compared with the Black population or that how Blacks endured prior to 60s and migrated to the north but could not go 5-10 miles out side Indianapolis were the factories moved from the inner city. Many of the issues that John points out I always felt were the case but never heard anyone openly bring them to light. I really could understand John's explanation on how the open ended Welfare that started in the 60s caused the Black community to decline in many areas. I saw the same thing growing up around Cortland, NY (30 miles south of Syracuse). These were white people but they had many of the same issues that welfare caused Black folks and I wanted no part of it. My Mother was working to bring up three children making under $2.00 an hour around 1970 with a 150.00 per month for all three children. She never thought of using welfare as way to get out of having to work all day and take care of her kids at night. She was able to buy us a new home and move use to a good neighborhood. My Mother's motivation and dedication has always inspired me to work hard and try and do the right things in life. On the other hand I had a father who basically abandoned us, and if it was not for the US Air Force forcing him to send child support we would have received very little from him. By the way, my Mother grew up poor on a farm and her father did the minimal to help the family stay a float but some how she never let that stop her from doing the right thing.
I used my experiences to relate to what John was explaining in the book and it all made really good sense. I think we all have negative forces pulling on us and a person has to work really hard regardless of their race to rise above these forces and do the right thing to put them in position to have a good life. John makes many good points that many Black folks are underachievers because of cultural influences (peer pressure) and I felt the same issues when I found myself hanging around the wrong people who only wanted to party and have a good time at the expense of their friends. I had to leave those people behind if I was to accomplish anything positive in my life. It was not easy for me to break away from the party/drug culture I lived around. Based on John's book I felt that for a Black youngster to be successful they need to break away and make the decision to leave the grips of a negative culture to go out into the world to be successful. To be their own man or women, but how can they when they relied so much on that culture as their identity.
The key for me was going into the Air Force and taking advantage of the educational programs and continuing in the Air Force Reserves. It all helped bring myself above what an average person was thought to be able to achieve in Cortland, NY. I had many Black friends in the Air Force that had the same opportunities to gain the same advantages the military had to offer and many took advantages of those opportunities. Just like me, many Black folks who entered into the Air Force just needed to get away from the negative influences that existed at home and find out what they could accomplish.
This is a really good book, written by someone with a great deal of insight and experience. I would recommend the book to anyone who has never experienced the Black culture of the last 30 years to help them get a better idea what many Black folks face in today's society and to provide a better understanding of the issues. The book helped see things much differently for Black folks and helped me create more empathy towards their issues in today's society.
Jim
some of the best arguments, and a couple wanting.......2006-09-14
McWhorter showed me a new brilliant light on a topic to which I had dedicated a great deal of energy, and I thought, already seen quite a lot more than meets the eyes of most. In his own lifetime, careless welfare policy and an endless thirst for righteous indignation helped perhaps half of his race to severely undercut their potential. He thoroughly understands that racism still exists, but deters attention from it for several reasons. These include true progress on the part of most whites, the pointlessness of planning a revolution, and plenty of evidence that looking for racism almost ensures that you will exaggerate it, to the dismay of everyone.
His central thesis is beyond retort, unassailable, and made me reexamine and disapprove of my own attitude (I am white but well alienated). However, he goes too far in his dismissal of structural factors in the plight of blacks. It did matter that factories moved away from their homes! McWhorter indulges a habit of repeating many illustrations of the same points, which is the reason for the book's length, and frequently serves to bolster confidence in his admittedly unpopular propositions. However, in a couple cases it seems to fool him into having too much faith in a theory. At least he seems not to fully appreciate the role of structural racism; although his critiques of the 'five stanzas' of liberal race cards are strong, level-headed and correct, he just goes a bit too far.
Later on, he drops the ball in his rap chapter. Unimpressed by the "political messages" he has found in rap lyrics, but cognizent that decrying the gangsta genre is rather pointless, he proposes that rap no longer be considered political. Yet here he misses the reality that all music is political, and the probability that the radio and television industries have steered the sales in certain directions, not because the music is better or has more profit potential, but because of the politics and inhibitions of the corporate parents. Recognizing that Kweli and Mos Def, and Common and the Roots, work hard to get politics to the masses, he dismisses them as not committed and focused enough, as if he is blind to their need to maintain some credibility among their audience. It is pitiful the way rappers describe women, but just think of the dames that must flock towards their rich selves. There are innumerable black women who are composed, competent, and genial. But they're not the ones who go backstage and pester the talent. The only way McWhorter's rap diagnosis makes sense is if he is trying to trick Clear Channel into playing more Kweli by pretending that it won't put any *realistic, effective* rebel politics into young heads.
Despite those two big mistakes, this book is a must-read. It is very hopeful, and it's great to have such concrete ideas about improving our nation.
