        Book Description

Moving and Learning Across the Curriculum: More Than 300 Activities and Games to Make Learning Fun is now out in its' 2nd edition. Movement is the young child's preferred method of learning. This is because when a child physically experiences concepts, they understand them more completely and retain the information longer. Retention has been proven to increase when children's senses are involved in the learning process, and this book provides hundreds of activities that help to teach major concepts in the content areas of art, language arts, math, music, science, and social studies. The domains of child development are completely intertwined in the early years making it important to incorporate them all throughout the learning process. This book will show the early childhood professional how to educate the "whole child", covering all of the domains of child development which include physical, social/emotional, and cognitive. To truly educate the child, they must be recognized as thinking, feeling, moving human beings with the need to experience with all of their senses. Moving and Learning Across the Curriculum, 2e, provides the activities to achieve that level of learning with features including detailed lesson plans, outdoor alternatives, updated resources, and enhanced "curriculum connectors" with additional suggestions for children's literature and music. An ideal resource for the early childhood professional, this book offers everything needed to use movement as a teaching tool.

          Book Description

PERFECT FOR CHILDCARE EDUCATORS, CARE GIVERS AND STUDENTS ALIKE, research shows us that the more senses that are involved in the learning process, the greater the amount of information retained. Dr. Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences validates learning with the body and its parts. With Moving and Learning Across the Curriculum, children are given the opportunity to physically experience concepts and themes common to the six major content areas of art, language, mathematics, music, science, and social studies. They can, thus, process the concepts using a multimodal approach that ensures greater comprehension and retention.

            Book Description

Drawing upon research from a variety of disciplines, this volume offers a systematic discussion of the issues and assumptions of the corporate responsibility debate. James J. Brummer provides an extensive review of the relevant literature and develops a methodology for treating specific problems of corporate responsibility, illustrating its use in actual practice. The book also proposes a theory of corporate responsibility and legitimacy that builds upon the concept of accountability and explores the relevance of applying methods of study traditionally associated with the humanities to contemporary problems of corporate ethics. The author begins by addressing general concepts and principles including types of corporate responsibility, relations of accountability, models of the corporation, and theories of institutional legitimacy. Part Two outlines the four theories of corporate responsibility--the classical, stakeholder, social demandingness, and social activist theories--and examines their major premises and supporting evidence. Two chapters treat the specific issue of plant closing or relocation in relation to each of the four theories of corporate responsibility. Finally, the author discusses collective and subordinate responsibility, paying particular attention to the concept of whistleblowing. The concluding chapter summarizes the corporate responsibility debate and analyzes various models of accountability. An ideal supplemental text for courses in business ethics and public administration, this volume is also an invaluable resource for executives confronted with issues of corporate responsibility in their own operations.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and portable idea book and reference.......2001-05-03

This slender little book is a handy desk guide that covers some important continuous process improvement tools. It gives a quick "how to" for the following tools that are the foundation of CPI: Tree, Pareto, Sequence Flow, Process Flow, Scatter, Run, Control and Histogram.

Granted, the run and control charts would merit a book unto themselves, but that misses the point of this book - it's a handy reference and idea book that takes up little briefcase space for consultants or desk space for anyone who is involved in CPI or measurement and analysis of any kind. I take mine with me when I am working on projects at client sites, and have found it invaluable when I am developing processes and procedures because it gives me ideas when I am writing the measurement sections of those documents.

I give it five stars for clear descriptions packed into a slim book and its thorough coverage of some of the most important tools available to a CPI practitioner or consultant.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Price.......2006-01-07

This is an excellent, if not comprehensive book for everything from TQM to Six-Sigma. I give it four stars for value and five for price. All in all, an excellent overview.

If this review was helpful, please add your vote -- Thanks.

              5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia + cookbook.......2004-07-01

I keep this book nearby because it serves as an encyclopedia of quality techniques that span the full spectrum, as well as a step-by-step guide to using each of the tools listed.

The entire collection of tools contained and described within are put into context in the first chapter that covers the continuous quality improvement story and its five steps - reason, current situation, analysis, action plan and results. Subsequent chapters are devoted to classes of tools: the basics (flow charts, check sheets, facts vs. inference, and how to construct tools such as Pareto diagrams, histograms, and control charts). Supporting tools, covered in the next chapter, include pie and bar charts, frequency charts, Likert scales and related diagrams.

Basic quality improvement techniques given in the next section go beyond just tools, and include vision and mission statements, group interaction techniques, problem classification and concepts. Among the tools are development charts, force-field analysis, checklists.

Advanced techniques, covered in the next chapter address process ownership, and some fairly substantial tools such as quality function deployment and Taguchi techniques, both of which are explained well in a surprising few pages.

The remainder of the book discusses quality improvement systems, such as JIT, ISO standards; and brief bios of Deming, Crosby and Juran and their approaches. Selected readings on various quality standards round out this book's treatment of the subject.

What I like about this book is the way a large number of topics and associated tools are thoroughly covered in a relatively short book. I also like the way you are clearly led through the construction and use of various charts, and how to effectively use tools in a step-by-step manner. This is clearly a useful introduction to quality tools and techniques, as well as a desk reference.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use...full of good tools.......2002-02-21

I am just learning about Continuous Improvement and the tools that are available to make that happen in the workplace. Our company is considering implementing a Six Sigma program and this book provides me with a related and large tool set to add to my tool belt.

4 out of 5 stars brief, good coverage of graphing and statistics.......2007-06-30

Swanson gives practical guidelines to anyone interested in running a quality improvement program. Many checklists are supplied. Often accompanied by top-down flowcharts. Jargon is explained.

And for those people without a strong maths background, there is an entire chapter on how to analyse and display data. It describes the most basic display graph types, like bar, pie, histogram, scatterplot and control charts. Along with the specialised but important Gantt chart for coordinating a project.

There is also a short discussion of statistical techniques. But if you find this useful, I would encourage you to then consult a fully fledged book dedicated to statistics. Swanson's coverage is necessarily miminal.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and Useful.......2001-08-24

This textbook was required reading for a Masters Program. Consequently, I didn't purchase because I wanted to, I purchased because I had too. With that in mind, I found this to be probably the most useful textbook I purchased during my entire course of study. The writing was clear and easy to understand and the practical applications were limitless. I highly recommend this book to anyone attempting to "run" a quality improvement program effectively and efficiently.

              5 out of 5 stars A gem!.......2002-07-03

This is, without a doubt, one of the most useful and best written guides about problem solving and continuous tools you can buy, and here are some reasons why:

              - It's formatted as a mini encyclopedia that covers seven categories of tools: (1) requirements and problem definition, (2) data gathering, (3) analysis, (4) ideas and options, (5) decision making, (6) planning, and (7) continuous improvement.

              - Each tool is presented in a fixed format that includes What it Is, How to Use It, and Example.

              - The layout and design makes finding information effortless and is highly visual.

You get 35 tools, ranging from the more common ones such as Pareto charts, SWOT analysis, cause and effect diagrams, to lesser know ones such as perception of performance grids and mind mapping. In addition, some of the tools are complex, such as customer-supplier agreements, time-cost and cost-benefit analyses, and team purpose analysis. I especially like the paired comparison technique and the complete treatment of planning tools, which includes work breakdown structures, critical path method, and planning tables. Another nice touch is the tool selection chart on page 12. This is one of the reasons that this short book is such a handy reference and easy to use. If you're interested in this book because you're getting involved in a continuous process improvement initiative I recommand that you also read "Continuous Process Improvement: Simplifying Work Flow Systems" by George D. Robson.

                    Book Description

The main focus of this book is how to use tools and techniques in an effective and efficient manner. What sets this book apart from others is that it covers a range of tools and techniques focusing not only on their description and construction but on the difficulties, both general and specific, in use and application. It neither ignores nor trivializes the underlying issues that influence their use and application. It also gives guidelines to the user to overcome the typical difficulties encountered.Case histories of good and best practice are outlined throughout the various chapters of the book. Another unique feature of the text is the provision of a methodology, which can be used in self-assessment mode, to assess the strengths and areas of improvement relating to the use and application of tools and techniques. The methodology was developed from research and has been used with considerable success in a number of organizations both in the UK and continental Europe. The book is targeted at the user of tools and techniques in manufacturing, commercial, utilities, public sector and service organizations. In this respect management at all levels of the organizational hierarchy will find something of value in the book as well as the more technical and engineering based personnel. Irrespective of the approach taken by an organization to business improvement they will need to use a selection of tools and techniques. All the evidence we have collected is that the use and application of tools and techniques is fraught with problems. Any management team interested in making best use of tools and techniques would benefit from studying the contents of this book. A conscious effort has been made to produce the text in language which is free from jargon.
