Right On the Money!.......2000-04-08
This book is attractive and value-adding for the following reasons: 1. It contains interviews with a cross-section of business researchers, in a largely Q&A format. 2. It contains lists of several useful reference sources, which are also cross-referenced throughout the book. That helps the reader understand the context for each reference source, and determine whether it's going to be useful to the reader or not. 3. The flow of material through the chapters (essentially interviews with the researchers) offers an interesting direction to the whole book. 4. The book is written in a lucid (simple, conversational) style. It's not heavy duty reading. 5. I found it offered practical insights. Good value for money!

Great resource for business searchers!.......2000-02-25
This is a great book for anyone who wants to use the Internet or online services to do research. I liked the variety of super searchers who were interviewed, and I learned something from every one. The book is useful and fun to read, too!

With the rapid expansion of the web, this book is already woefully out-of-date. The format is distracting and the text is poorly edited.

The migration of literally thousands of companies and their databases to the Internet has made available a tremendous amount of helpful information about the inner workings of these companies and the products and services they have to offer. The availability of all kinds of information in a variety of formats has given birth to a new breed of corporate employees - research professionals. Linked closely with terminology such as "competitive intelligence" and "data mining," researchers can play an important role in the future of any company doing business today.
Mary Ellen Bates has done the business community a great service by bringing together a handful of some pretty amazing interviews with researchers involved in finding information for business use. Super Searchers Do Business offers readers plenty of useful research tips and ideas gleaned from these researchers already operating in the corporate trenches.
The professional researchers interviewed for this book offer plenty of insightful help. They identify some of the databases they use, the discussion groups and mailing lists they participate in, the journals they read, the electronic newsletters they receive, and some good recommended reading. These resources are listed at the back of the book for convenient reader accessibility. While the use of these resources alone won't guarantee researching success, they do offer a good place to start.
Other helpful insight offered by these researchers includes their advice. Each offer their own angle for success. They point out how they make use of multiple resources for information gathering, how they have learned to move from one resource to another when the task calls for new direction, identifying reliable resources, and how they have learned to rely on their "gut" feelings at times when sorting through information. The professional researcher must learn not only how to gather information but how to package it together to meet their client's needs. This book will show readers how!
One of the recurring themes identified throughout this book is that of combining research skills with a business mindset. The researchers interviewed for the book demonstrate by example how they have interacted with their clients. They cite actual circumstances they have faced on the job and how they responded to client demands. This valuable insight will go a long way to help readers assess their own research and interpersonal relationship skills and help them to learn how to relate better with their own business clients.
This book is ideal for persons desiring to improve their research skills. It's loaded with tips, resources, and many ideas that can make online and off-line researching an easier and more productive task to accomplish. It is must reading for persons desiring to setup their own research services!

While most believe that white-collar crime is prosecuted only by federal agencies, local prosecutors are playing an increasingly important role in the social control of corporate violators. Yet many are reluctant to take legal action at the local level because such cases often entail unique challenges and difficulties.
Michael L. Benson and Francis T. Cullen present exhaustive research that combines quantitative data on cases with qualitative information on the procedural and legal constraints facing local enforcement. Drawing on extensive interviews, they investigate how local prosecutors respond to corporate crime (or whether they do at all) within a community context.
As watchdogs of community morals, district attorneys and others decide which lawbreakers to pursue, but as elected public servants they may hesitate to indict companies on whose stability the community depends. Factors such as population size, region, crime rate, economic conditions, and legal culture influence a community's attitude toward corporate crime, which, in turn, influences the decision to prosecute. The authors also show that questions concerning jurisdiction, resource allocation, or appropriate punishment may dissuade local prosecutors from pursuing some cases. They address the limitations of the federal government in prosecuting corporate crime and offer suggestions to facilitate more positive action at the local level, including better access to laboratories, more information exchange and networking, and improved training.
An insightful work on a too-long neglected aspect of white-collar crime, this is essential reading not only for students of criminal justice and public administration but also for practitioners who confront these special problems and obstacles every day.

I prefer to write on napkins rather than in this book.......2007-01-04
While the idea behind this log book is very inspiring, its production leaves a lot to be desired. This book has beautiful artistry and layout inside only to be printed in black and white on cheap paper. The illustrations, quotes and sayings are rousing for those who follow these books and the philosophies, but a good old journal or lined paper is just as good and doesn't make you feel like your doing your homework in a 3rd grade workbook. If this book was in color, its stimulating power might have worked on me, but the print and paper quality are just above newsprint and not very rousing.
If you are looking for a place to write your ideas in a stream-of-consciousness manner with cheesy illustrations and motivational sayings that are only theoretical and not practical, then this book might be useful. For everyone else, read the books and just use plain paper which can allow you to make lists, sketch, and not work around little drawings and random quotes.

While book browsing for ideas that could further my intention I came across the Zentrepreneur's Idea Log and discovered what could be a true starting point for my dreams and aspirations. This is a great book to cast a side the clutter of a busy mind and deliver yourself to what it is that you truly want. The writing is motivational, inspirational and thought provoking. After purchasing this book I've relegated my Franklin Planner to my desk drawer and the Zentrepreneur Idea Log to my nightstand where it belongs to help me capture dreams and new ideas. If you are looking for a true help in exploring possibility start here.
AN IMPORTANT SUCCESS TOOL.......2004-11-22
As a follower of these motivational and business entrepreneur-Zentrepreneur Guide's series of books I look forward to the advice, knowledge and encouragement that these books continue to offer, but wasn't sure what to expect from something called an Idea Log. Like all of these books of guidance and inspiration, I should learn to expect the unexpected from these two authors. The Idea Log is a beautiful resource for keeping track of your own creative imagination so that you can make tangible your insights and give your right-brain a respectful, classy, deserving tool to work with. It is a place that encourages you to break the rules for what exists by clearing away old ideas and offering a space for new ones. This is a brainstroming, planning room to get personal with your ideas for business and life and not a medium for communicating with others. The art and the writing in the book is inspiring and challenges you to be the best that you can be.

Home Cooking Made Easy.......2002-03-02
Coming from a Dutch Indonesian family and being a first generation American, I grew up on rice rather than potatoes. It was not a strange thing to find roots and herbs with names like Laos in our cabinets (I found out later in my school days that this was a place in the world as well). I was fortunate that my husband's palate adapted once introduced to those flavors. But my mom's translations of a bit of this and a touch of that, did not help in my limited cooking experience. With this book I am able to reproduce with ease the foods I grew up enjoying. It is easy to use and the pictures are wonderful. Any cookbook worth its salt has color photographs. I wish I could find a copy of the first 'Let's Go Dutch'. Thank you Johanna and Jan!
