Book Description
The collapse of the centrally planned systems of the former Soviet Union undoubtedly stands out as one of the most important global events of the 20th century. The transformation from a centralized economic system to a market system created major opportunities for Western corporations to enter markets that had formerly been closed to them. In this book, E.K.Dosmukhamedov employs a distinctive approach to the study of post-communist transition by analyzing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from a political, legal and economic standpoint. Kazakhstan is used as a case study to illustrate the role of FDI in restructuring the economy of the former Soviet Union countries in the Post-Communist era.

Book Description
Two of the distinguishing features of the law on foreign direct investment (FDI) are its complexity and its creativity. The law on FDI embraces the domestic rules and regulations dealing with foreign controlled businesses as well as the numerous bilateral and multilateral legal instruments. It is influenced by awards of international arbitration tribunals as well as numerous other sources. Consequently, it is always changing. The various actors involved, including transnational corporations, local companies, investment promotion agencies, and multilateral donors, as well as lawyers advising foreign investors or their local counterparts and financial intermediaries, each follow their own interests. By its nature, FDI involves the interaction, and sometimes the clash, between different legal concepts of the participants and regulators. Counsels to local governments and domestic partners in a joint venture with foreign companies may not always be accustomed to legal documentation in an Anglo-American or continental European style. As a result, dealing with FDI requires an ongoing learning process for all who wish to understand and successfully manage foreign investment transactions. All this elucidates the need for a multi-author book which covers various areas of the law on FDI from different perspectives. The authors of this book are all concerned with FDI as either academics or practicioners and come from a variety of legal, academic and geographical backgrounds. The book consists of three parts: first, a general introduction on FDI by Dr. Escher; next, an analysis on the emerging international law on FDI and related areas; and finally, an overview of FDI law in a variety of countries in Asia, Africa, Latin-America, and Europe. The resulting diversity of perspectives and topics provides the reader with useful insights in international and domestic aspects of FDI.

production and prepress.......2007-06-16
This book is a great learning tool for printing... production and prepress. This is a great book to have as a graphic designer or design student. There is a great deal to be learned about printing to get the results you want, and this book will help you along the way. There are amazing terms and definitions to aid in expanding your printing industry vocabulary.
It is broken down into 10 chapters:
Chapter 1 Overview: Planning for Results
Chapter 2 The Parts: Type and Graphics
Chapter 3 Assembling the Parts: Prepress
Chapter 4 Outputting the Parts: Film and Flats
Chapter 5 The Magic of Color
Chapter 6 Using Paper and Ink
Chapter 7 Exploring Offset Printing
Chapter 8 Exploring Other Printing Methods
Chapter 9 Techniques for Finishing and Binding
Chapter 10 Working with Printers
Good for entry level information.......2007-01-22
I use this book to teach a Graphic Production class. This is a good entry level book to wet one's interest in the broad scope of each part of the printing production process. It touchs on everything from scheduling to design to prepress to actually getting it on press al the way through the bindery and shipping processes. Without this basic understanding, new design students have no understanding of what they are creating. This gives a brief snippet about each process. The early designer then at least has an idea of how their final products will possibly be used.
Each area of print production can have its own book and ideally designers will learn these processes in depth. As an entry level book however this has all of the basics without overwhelming the student. It also delivers the dry information that creative folks need in simple clear form. After thirty years in this industry I welcome the simplicity this book provides.

I used this book for an online print production course and will not resell it due to its priceless contents.
If you need a book like this, you can do better........2006-06-25
I have two books currently which are much better than this one. I'm not really interested in spending the next hour of my life typing up a really exhaustive commentary on this book, as this is the first one I've ever done, but I'm just hoping to save you some time and money and I feel very strongly this is a bad book and a waste of your efforts.
It was the required textbook for my Print Production class, and I could've gotten a better understanding of Print Production by sniffing the ink on my local newspaper. The glossary is substandard, the chapters are, to say the least, hardly informative, and the author is often contradictive of his own statements. It doesn't seem as though he has an understanding of Print Production at all. I spent days staring at this book wondering why I didn't understand print, till I realized it wasn't my brain, I had bought a crappy book.
I won't say some of the elements aren't useful, but you'd be better off shopping at the used bookstore by my school, for example, and picking up a used copy for ten bucks. There will be plenty there. You can get everything useful in this book from the Graphics Master (a much better book) or any other Print Production book.
Try Kaj Johansen (spelling... sorry) or Adobe's Print Production Guide. Also, International Paper occassionally prints a guide. Don't buy this one. Graphics Master Seven or Eight would be of MUCH more use to you.

Provides the best examples in the industry.......2006-09-21
This book presents clear examples of the critical practices of project management. Ursula makes complex work breakdown structure (WBS) and scheduling techniques easy. Her experience as a practitioner and instructor shines through this work. If you want a dry, academic book...go elsewhere. This is a dynamic presentation of important cost and scheduling practices for those of us who really need to apply them on projects. There is no other book out there in its class.

A concise and coherent treatment - a great reference book........2006-06-21
This book is hands-down most useful, clear, and light-weight treatment of the topic I ever owned. It imparts the essential project management fundamentals related to cost and schedule control in a language that is readable and easily internalized. The simple clear-cut analogies Ms. Kuehn employs supply handy "gut feel" mnemonic help for the techniques and the formulae. The book is at once a good tutorial for a novice and a handy concise reference for a pro.
Book Description
This work outlines a state-of-the-art project control and trending programme, focusing on advanced applied-cost and schedule-control skills for all phases of a project at both owner and contractor level. It contains information on the three major aspects of the total project programme: the techniques and procedures utilized for a project; the experience and analytical ability of project personnel; and the commitment and teamwork of a project group.

Still the best.......2007-07-22
This text provides a solid and complete treatment of Earned Value from concept to the CPR Formats 1-5. The concepts are clearly developed and include the most important aspect of the components of the Performance Management Baseline (PMB) and the workings of the Contract Budget Baseline (CBB) log. This is much too often overlooked. Yet, it is quite essential for PMs to distinguish between and know how to coduct re-planning and reprogramming. EVMS does have a process for working changes and providing flexibilty other than the typical punt approaches that loose all performance tracking continuity needed for metrics, particularly in mature process oriented organizations.
I would really like to see a new version of this text with references to SOX and ANSI 748 (but retain history of C/SCSC design to show these really hasn't changed much), updated DIDs, a discussion on the known issues of SPI and the Earned Schedule alternative, and a brief survey of practical Risk Management Budgets utilization options. These add-ons would return the text to it's prior seminal standing.
Still, as of this posting, I'm using the text as the centerpiece for Earned Value training of my Businses Analysts and the study is going well. They even like the war stories.
A easy to read book about the C/SCSC, origin of earned value.......2005-03-21
This book is about the Cost/Schedule Control System Criteria (C/SCSC) that was established in 1967 by US DoD. The C/SCSC later becomes the Earned Value Management System (EVMS) in 1996.
I feel that it is very easy to read and help understanding the earned value method by knowing the origin form and the future direction. Some of topics are not covered in Quentin W. Fleming's Earned Value Project Management book, such as the chapter 12, the Buy Items : Major Subcontracts and the chapter 13, the buy items : Materials and Interdivisional.
This book includes a large portion of appendix, a 250 pages section out of the total 563 pages. They may be regarded as outdate materials. They are useful if you want to learned the backgound.
An excellent guide for the starter and professional alike.......1997-08-13
Cost/Schedule Control Systems Criteria is a little known form of project management. The subject matter suffers from being very dry and complex. What this book does is to give clear knowledge whilst managing to keep the reader interested as well. The book covers the history of the techniques involved as well as the day-to-day application of them. This format serves to explain the method and the rationale behind the method. All avenues are explored and the book is generic enough to apply to any and all projects.
A well written, well informed guide to one of the most misunderstood and misused management tools.
