Customer Reviews:
The book really doesn't live up to its title........1998-09-21
The book only gives general information about LLC's in all 50 states, and no specific information about LLC's in Illinois. Question in point: Does Illionis allow single-owner LLC's? You wont find the answer in this book! I was also disappointed when I read about choosing a business structure. By improperly describing the tax ramifications of an LLC, partnership, and sole-propriotorship, the book tries to steer most (not all) readers towards starting a corporation. Why? Maybe because the book conatains the 1-800 phone number of a business that can provide you with the necessary documents?? The book is not a total loss, however it does not live up to its title and contains tax information that is very biased, if not blatantly wrong.

Incredibly helpful!.......2002-01-24
I was never one to put much stock in so called "self-help" books, but after picking this one up and flipping through it, I realized that I have much to learn! I couldn't put this book down. I found Miss Tracy's ideas to be powerful tools for reshaping my view of work and my role within it. The examples given are useful. The "focus" questions helped me to determine the sources of my problems at work. I credit this book with helping me to completely reverse my view of a previous job. Instead of continuing to bemoan the events and be angry, I was able to see what went wrong (with the job and myself) and finally make peace. I have no doubt that I will refer to this book again and again. I do recommend "Take This Job and Love It!", but warn any persons who tend to proofread that they will have a fine time noticing the scanner errors!
Excellent.......2001-11-06
This book has already changed my life. I saw it on a shelf the other day and after browsing a few pages, found some good stuff. Little did i know that the next day my whole job would be changed around on me, putting me in a total furious crisis. I went back to that book after work at the end of the day, and this morning I now have a lot of new options and creative approaches which may not only save my sanity, but also help me not to back myself into a corner at this typical frustrating kind of job that many have. I'm a very choosy reader, and this book is highly recommended.

If you can only own 1 Southern cookbook...this it it!.......2007-08-07
I purchased this book back in 1986 and it is still one of my most cherished and used cookbooks. Camille taught me to make biscuits! I was a total novice back then! The old cookbook had more old photos and nostalgia...this one seems to be glossy and full of picures of the actual food itself.
This cookbook is a classic...it has stood the test of time...I have been using it for 21 years now!
Excellent Southern Cookbook, don't tell your cardiologist.......2006-04-26
If you have "Southern Roots" you will love this book. Every time I make a dish from this book I remember my grandmother. This book is a treasure.
There are a few recipes in this book that won't make a cardiologist faint, but not too many. But then again that really isn't what true southern food is about is it?
This book contains a nice recipe for homemade English Muffins, and Hush puppies. If want to make something that is very southern try to Carolina Grits Souffle. This recipe turns out very light and delicate and extremely flavorful from the sharp cheddar. The recipe for Crabmeat Imperial will blow your socks off. If you aren't a southerner you may not realize that this recipe alone is worth the price of the book.
I highly recommend this book for those that enjoy real Southern Cooking.
Beautiful, But Doesn't Contain All Recipes of the Paperback.......2006-02-12
A friend of mine made a delicious cake out of the Paperback version of this book. The cake was so wonderful I wanted to own the book to discover all of it's wonderful recipes. When I saw a hard copy on Amazon that appeared to be the same of course I wanted the hard cover. (PS the hard cover was in excellent condition and with shipping only cost about 8.70) Now the hard cover has beautiful b&w and color photos but it doens't contain all the recipes of it's predecessor. I was very dissappointed that it didn't have the recipe for the delicious cake my friend made. The only clue is on the inside of the book where it shows the copyright date of 1986 with color photos added in 2002, where it says "adapted" from The Heritage of Southern Cooking. Comparing both HC & PB I see that the HC is missing a lot of the recipes but has more photographs. There's nothing on the front cover that gives any indication it's only a sampling of all the recipes. I'm buying the PB now.
Lovely, Darlin'.......2005-09-17
This cookbook is delightful to look at. Huge, full-color pictures on every page. Most of the recipes are quite simple to make, too. I like the little historical photos too. Unfortunately, however, nearly all of them are uncaptioned. Most of the recipes could have been introduced a bit better too, like where do they originate and what makes them Southern. Also, a few of the recipes are from Maryland, Missouri, and Illinois -- are those parts of the South?
It IS a good collection of tasty, mostly traditional Southern recipes, but I think it is inaptly named, because it doesn't speak much about the recipes' "heritage," so much as Camille Glenn's upbringing as a Kentucky innkeeper's daughter.
Also, I wish recipes for sweet potato pie and hominy had been included. Otherwise, like I said very beautiful, and I enjoyed learning how to make traditional pickles and preserves. You must try the corn pudding!
Even a Yankee can cook good with this one!.......2004-01-06
Around 1987 an acquaintance of mine purchased this book. He didnt get much of a chance to use it though. After I got a hold of it I read it so many times.. the recipes and the stories. I actually got a cozy feeling of home sweet home and got hooked on the southern hospitality of it all. I started cooking many of the recipes and to my surprise they all worked like a charm and without a glich.I was hooked!
I mostly used the book for some old fahioned recipes that had a bit of a twang to them. I especially liked the shortening bread, mincemeat, and pickle recipes. Last but not least...I value the bits of information throughout the book that I still rely on today. It is now the year 2004 and I've been living in Europe for 12 years without this book but still use many of the recipes that I had gotten from it. I think its time I buy my own book. I reaaly miss it!
This book is well written, enticing, and most of all delicious!

Wonderful classic Americana cookbook.......2004-12-03
This wonderful cookbook features a huge selection of common and obscure cookie and baked good recipes that really touch home with its focus on traditional style American baking. Like many in the Southern Hertigae series, this books has a unique selection of vintage photos and anecdotes sourounding the history of these treasured recipes. The book is now out of print and has become quite a sought after item among collectors of regional American cuisine (as well as those who collect baked goods cookbooks).

Molto Bene! Beautiful stories and delicious recipes!.......1999-08-29
Having grown up in an Italian house, I can truly relate to the many stories about italian heritage and customs. This book clearly gives heart warming memories and one delicous recipe after another. The title of the book alone made me smile as we enjoy "macaroni and gravy" every Sunday, too. Even if you're not Italian you will enjoy the stories and easy to follow recipes. Mangia!!!
Real cooking reflective of Rhode Island Italian heritage.......1999-05-25
The food and stories are wonderful and are authentic Rhode Island. The recipes are not complicated and are expressions of love and family through cooking.
Cooking will wait until after you read the entire book!.......1999-01-11
This cookbook is the Bible in my kitchen!! Such wonderful stories and anecdotes with the recipes that you'll find yourself just reading and reading and smiling! Being of Italian heritage, Ms. Barr's cookbook brought back so many wonderful memories for me. Memories built around my mother's kitchen and the wisdom and love that were always a part of her cooking. And yes, WE called it Macaroni! Thank you, Ms. Barr for a delightful read.
A cookbook you can actually READ cover to cover!.......1998-08-08
A must read for anyone interested in Authentic Italian recipies. Nancy Verde has created an excellent collection of recipies and the history behind why these dishes & customs became popular. An important book for Italian americans wishing to explore thier roots. It reads like a novel!
Book Description
Celebrate Virginia! is a celebration of all that is Virginia. It honors the unparalleled heritage of hospitality and history for which Virginia is renowned. This beautiful cookbook features a combination of recipes, interesting historical sidebars, and anecdotal descriptions of food-related products for which Virginia is known. Recipes are both contemporary and historical, as are the many culinary traditions found throughout the book. For example, the book describes the unique "Shad Planking" tradition held each year, and the history of tea. Numerous recipes attributed to Virginia's celebrated sons and daughters are included, such as Senator John Warner's recipe for Crab Cakes.

Better than most.......2004-07-27
I have many cookbooks at home, and this is one of the best. It contains a lot of very exciting recipes, but even so, what makes this into a special book; is all the information about Virginia.
The book is packed with information about what seems to be a very interesting state to visit. I have never been to Virginia in all my life, and compared to the states that are often in the media, like for instance New York, California and Florida, I knew very little about Virginia. It changed when I found this book in my mail box. It is also very obvious that besides being an excellent cook, Rowena Fullinwider is very proud of her state and wants to share it with the rest of us.
The reason I have given Celebrate Virginia! only 4 stars (closer to 4 1/2 really), is that I found it a bit hard to read a lot of the middle sections. Those were so interesting, and I wanted to read it all. It was just a bit hard on my eyes to read blue print on a yellow/light blue background.
Still, it is a very good cookbook that I want to recommend.
Celebrate Virginia!.......2003-09-03
This is a wonderful cookbook! I have been collecting cookbooks for 18 years, and this is one of my favorites. I discovered it while in a B&B in Virginia and had to go out and find it immediately. It is filled to the brim with yummy recipes and tidbits of interest and history. I just can't recommend this book enough. Enjoy!

To Die For.......2006-06-21
This cookbook is wonderful! Be warned - many of the dozens of recipes are time consuming to prepare. This isn't a cookbook if you are looking for a quick cake. However, the end results are indescribably good. The General Robert E Lee cake, a lemon cake with lemon filling and frosting, is one of the best things I have ever eaten! The book also contains recipes for some of the cakes I used to beg my mother to make: Devil's Food Cake, Harvest Peanut Cake, Lazy-Dazy Cake, and Pineapple Upside-down Cake. There are illustrations, old pictures, and interesting tidbits of information accompanying the recipes. It is as much fun to read as it is to use.
Fabulous Cakes.......2005-04-06
I have made and tasted about 20 of the recipes in this book and they are all straightforward and delicious. Some of my favorites include the Hoot n' Holler Whisky , Carrot , and Whacky Cakes. My Mom has had a copy of this book for years; I'm delighted to have found one for myself. The recipies are definitely not lowfat but, my, are they good!
