    Book Description

Rap music has many detractors. Today, it is often associated with a culture of crass materialistm, sex, violence and irresponsibility. It wasn't always so. In her thorough and entertaining tour of the "golden age" of rap from 1987 to 1996, McQuillar takes us back to a time when the music voiced the social and political concerns of inner-city youth, reflected their hopes and dreams for the future, and strove to inspire positive social change. When Rap Music Had a Conscience gives us the A's - to - Z's of major groups and artists, from Arrested Development to YZ, of this creative and socially conscious age.
Broadening its outlook on the culture, the book discusses the interactions of rap music with literature, film and fashion. Finally, it delves into the socio-political dimensions of Hip-Hop in the golden age, exploring the influence of events from the L.A. riots to the unearthing of the oldest human remains in Kenya, to paint a rich and fascinating picture of rap music and its diverse contexts and consequences.

4 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - WHEN RAP MUSIC HAD A CONSCIENCE by Tayannah Lee McQuillar .......2007-08-04

When I started reading this book, I felt a little displaced, I was not completely aware of some of the names or events being introduced. But being a fan of music, I was anxious to find out how and where rap/hip-hop launched its presence.

Rap music was initially to be a tool, which would give voice to inner-city youth. But as rap evolved, the original goals were sacrificed to embrace a form of expression with more of a street culture. It created space, if you will, for crass commercialism in the form of sex and violence with little sense of concern for the community. As a result, pimps, hos and four letter words have engulfed the lyrical content of mainstream rap music for over a decade. With the advent of a more visual society, videos with overtly-masculine young men, fast cars, pseudo naked girls, and 'bling-bling' have added fuel to the negative connotations by fans across the globe.

WHEN RAP MUSIC HAD A CONSCIENCE is a look back at how a group of talented, educated, and idealistic youth viewed their surroundings and explored why things were the way they were. Ms. McQuillar takes a look at certain political events, movies, and literature that emancipated some of the original rap artists. With her extensive research, she hopes this abstract history will do several positive things: remind fans of a time when black communities were captivated by the original 'mic' rappers, when rappers had a message worth hearing, and when revolution, not impudence, was the cry. With a well-rounded list of artists, suggested things to read, listen to, and view, this is an engaging book.

I hope this book will ignite interest in and create dialogue about this part of rap music history. --Tayannah Lee McQuillar

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Pragmatic & emphasizes quality and leadership.......2001-06-15

It seems like everyone wants to be a visionary these days, especially in the high tech sector where I make my living. The problem is that a vision without execution is a hallucination, and there are a lot of hallucinations from what I see. This book is a grounded and straightforward guide to crafting an organization based on realities.

It starts with how to build and articulate a vision, and from that vision derive a mission statement that will guide your company towards realization of the vision. What I like about the authors' approach is the way they integrate quality management concepts into vision, mission and values. They also emphasize leadership and make it clear that the best crafted and articulated vision and mission statements are for naught without a total commitment and strong leadership to guide the organization and constantly keep focused on where they are supposed to be going. This is reinforced with some natural laws, such as you get what you talk about, the culture of a work team is a reflection of its leader, and you can't walk faster than one step at a time.

The natural laws set forth in the book have corollaries in the form of problems. Here the authors identify and provide guidance to problems such as managers who won't let go, the front line resists greater authority, an inappropriate focus on the boss and clash of ideas. One key concept that I especially thought astute is relocating authority and identifying consultative and decision roles and responsibilities as centers of authority are transformed into participative management. I think this is key because doing this is a fine balancing act. I have witnessed attempts to do this in other organizations that did not clearly define scope and responsibility (or accountability and authority), only to see managers let go of authority that was rightfully theirs. The result can be chaos and lack of focus - using the authors' approach it becomes a true participatory environment that is focused on mission.

Other highlights include: continuous cultural improvement with an emphasis on measurement, effective use of task forces and a wealth of HR guidelines ranging from hiring/firing to salary and incentives. These set this book apart from many that deal with vision and mission statements because too many books sidestep these important factors.

Over the years I have read a number of books that deal with vision and mission statement development. This is the first that squarely addresses the leadership issues as well as the HR challenges that you will face when you publish your vision and mission and transform your organization into what you envision. If you are just looking for quick and dirty way to get a vision and mission statement hung in your lobby or emblazoned on your web site this book is not for you. If, on the other hand, you have an idea where your company should be going and want a clear path to getting there get this book and take it to heart.

          Book Description

Cultivating Inspired Leaders is about becoming an 'inspired and inspirational leader-manager', regardless of position in an organization. Such individuals see their role as participants in the management process, working with associates, developing leadership skills among those around them and cultivating managerial skills within themselves and fellow team members.

This book asserts that managers progress in stages from their traditional roles as administrators to that of 'leader-manager' with the capability and eagerness to cultivate leadersip, then ultimately to 'inspired and inspirational leader-manager' with a sense of dedication and commitment to their organization, associates and spirit within themselves. Author Bruce Lansdale reveals the path toward this enlighted goal with a wealth of experience and humor gained during his years at the American Farm School.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A different slant on leadership.......2003-10-17

It seems to me that there are two broad categories of leader - those seeking earthly rewards and those seeking heavenly rewards. There is a wealth of material on those in the first category and by going to university or wading through a multitude of books you can acquire the leadership skills required. There are not so many books available regarding the leadership skills of the second category. How did Mother Teresa develop such phenomenal leadership skills that she gathered around her a dedicated group of followers prepared to live at the same level as the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta and who would risk their lives in working side by side with lepers? And all this for zero salary, zero perks and no golden handshake at the end. Most of us would have taken one look at the job description and not even bothered to apply, even though there are plenty of job openings.

Bruce Lansdale holds the middle ground between the Mother Teresas of this world and charismatic CEOs of big corporations. For thirty-five years he was Director of the American Farm School, a nonprofit established in 1904 in northern Greece to improve the quality of life in rural areas by teaching farming, village crafts and industrial skills such as electricity, plumbing, sanitation to youth. For older people there was a community development program. Serving through the really tough years following the German occupation and the civil war when Greece was in a similar condition to many developing countries today, Lansdale's final years saw Greece join the EU and graduate to relative prosperity. These years gave Lansdale a wealth of experience recorded in his first book "Master farmer: Teaching Small farmers Management" which teaches the management skills required to POLKA - plan, organize, lead, k(c)ontrol and adjust. In later years he identified leadership as one of the most important skills to acquire, resulting in "Cultivating Inspired Leaders: Making Participatory Management Work". We will have no difficulty in doing everything he tells us but he brings it all together in a way that is particularly appropriate for nonprofits. Ambassador Niles, President, US Council for International Business and US Ambassador to Greece from 1993 to 1997 knew Lansdale and the American Farm School very well and wrote "Bruce Lansdale is the most inspiring person I have ever met, and one of the wisest. His work as Director of the American Farm School did more for Greece and Greek-American relations, than all the American ambassadors combined, myself included. His book, "Cultivating Inspired Leaders" presents the practical lessons in management and leadership learned over more than half a century. I heartily recommend it."

Cultivating Inspired Leaders has been written for leader-managers at all levels and in all work, particularly for those in nonprofits. The book is based on the philosophy that management is doing what you want with what you've got and that workers of every type and in every position are leader-managers if they believe that there is something greater to what they are doing than may appear in material form.

The transformation of an administrator who may manage by right, privilege or appointment to an inspiring leader-manager is not unlike the metamorphosis of the egg to larva to pupa to butterfly. How many of us fail to be the butterfly we were born to be because we did not have the teacher to guide us or we lacked the willingness to pass through the mental, emotional and spiritual struggle involved? This book provides the advice, guidance and inspiration to those who wish to travel this path. Peter Drucker observes that non-profit institutions that do not have a conventional bottom line may have to measure their effectiveness by their success in producing changed human beings. If this is so, the goal of cultivating inspired leaders is a noble one and may well be the most important task we face.

The goal of this book is that our management becomes participatory, that the helper and the helped become a team, that the manager and employee become companions, that the guide and the guided lead each other. The beauty of this book is that it spells out how we can do it and shows that each of us can become an inspiration to our fellow man.

If you are a trustee of a nonprofit this should be required reading. If your ambition is to climb to the top of a nonprofit you should study this book so that all the lessons it contains become second nature to you. If you are a secretary or receptionist or just starting your career, there is plenty in this book for you; you are a key person within the organization and can show leadership at whatever level you currently hold. If you have been appointed to a top post and find that you are a leader in name only and lack enthusiastic followers, you can become an inspired and inspiring leader. This book is not just a good read, but it demands a lot of you and your organization. The chapter "Evaluate Yourself" may reveal some unpleasant truths. No pain; no gain. But if you really want success for yourself and your nonprofit there is no better place to start than to absorb the wisdom contained in this book.

5 out of 5 stars How to think about and plan your giving.......2000-09-24

Most of us give money to charity. This book will help you think about how to link your giving to your personal values, making sure you support causes that are most important to you. It will also help you organize your giving.

When I organized my giving and linked it to my own values, I found that I was willing and able to increase my giving, and to get more joy and satisfaction out of my gifts. That's a great result!

This book is a "workbook" with exercises that help draw out your most deeply held beliefs and links them to your giving. It does not espouse any particular set of beliefs, so it is good for everyone.

I found it a great help in thinking about what I hoped my gifts could accomplish. I also evaluated my existing giving, adding certain charities and dropping others when I focused on those that were more important to me.

A great book for givers at every dollar level from modest to substantial!

                Book Description

ZQC is based on the principle that defects are prevented by controlling the performance of a process so that it cannot produce defects, even when a mistake is made by the machine or a human operator. Instead of pointing fingers at people, ZQC finds ways to keep errors from turning into defects. This book introduces front-line workers to the basic methodology of ZQC in a succinct, easy to read format that covers all aspects of this important manufacturing improvement strategy.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and straight forward for beginners.......2007-03-11

Whether you start with JIT/Lean or Quick Response Manufacturing, you need to learn some simple tools helping you with the process improvement after any process analyze. Many books about operations management will teach you the interaction of workstations and the parameters influencing the performance of a workstation, line or even a factory. Furthermore good operations books will give you the insights how to analyze the performance of a system. What often misses (which is Ok), is to provide the knowledge, e.g. if lot size reduction will bring a huge improvement for cycle-time etc., how to do this? Most of the books of this series exactly deal with this questions and present some methods that work and will simplify your life reading more sophisticated literature about this issue later on.

All the books of the productivity press series were a great help to me. The following books of this series provided a good start about:

                - SMED: how to reduce change-over time and to make small lot sizes happen
                - TPM: how to improve machine availability and breakdown variability
                - ZQC: overcoming the problem of other quality methods, that only measure what was done but w/o pre-active prevention for rework/ scrap (Six-Sigma, SPC etc. are more complicated and not pre-active..)

The series includes as well 5s and Pull Production etc. Especially the 3 titles mentionned above are a good introduction to related fiels. As your experiences grows, you might read more specific books about the subject later on. The data collection, e.g. for machine availability and variation etc., is not the objective of this book, but the method itself, how to to do it.

For beginners, 5 stars is fair enough.

                Best Regards,
                Oliver
