5 out of 5 stars Excellent CM book.......2006-05-30

All too often construction managers (CM) get caught up in the day-to-day issues that happen on the jobsite. Daniel's book brings one back to the basics: Project Management 101, Safety Considerations, Key Administration Issues, Financial Administration, Project Change Control, Document Control, and Estimating. The sample forms reinforce the use of the appropriate form, which should not be a handwritten piece of paper or an e-mail message (without the appropriate attachment).
I have read Daniel's book twice and feel the seasoned CM as well as the novice CM can get value from this book. From the attributes of an Exceptional Manager, to the listing of potential Meeting Topics, to Change and Document Control, the book offers some new ideas and some things to remember when planning the next construction project.

                    Book Description

                    Foreword by Stephen R. Covey

Are outer demands for more success, more money, and more prestige overwhelming your inner longings? Is your work no longer energizing you? Years of frenetic activity and blind ambition have robbed many people of the joy and fulfillment they once found in their work. The successes they crave and failures they fear have come to define them.

But there is hope, and it can be found in a few simple yet timeless stories.

The great Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen succinctly illuminated life's challenges in his treasured fairy tales for children and adults. And now, in celebration of H.C. Andersen's 200th birthday, the powerful lessons of these classic folk tales have been ingeniously applied to the complexities of the modern workplace.

The Ugly Duckling Goes to Work probes H. C. Andersen's sharp and witty stories for lessons that will inspire you to bring more meaning, more energy, and more joy to your work -- to create a meaningful work life. You'll read about:

                    * The Emperor's New Clothes: This prickly story pokes fun at phoniness and snobbery and shows how fear and ego can drive you to foolishness. You'll learn to reclaim your own agenda by using two terrific fool-detectors: self-awareness and candid conversations.
                    * The Ugly Duckling: This fierce tale of rejection, survival, longing, learning, and growing teaches you that success is not just having a great career, but finding out where you belong and becoming the person you were meant to be.
                    * The Dung Beetle: The dung beetle, a self-absorbed and status-driven creature, provides a cautionary example of the need to get past illusions and face the reality of your strengths and weaknesses in order to succeed.
                    * The Nightingale: This charming story looks at a plain little bird that sings the most enchanting songs, drawing its strength from nature, meaning, and freedom -- in sharp contrast to the gold, titles, and applause that motivate the emperor's court. The tale teaches you to push beyond mere perfunctory performances and reach your full potential.

In addition to the concise summaries and probing analyses of H. C. Andersen's tales, The Ugly Duckling Goes to Work includes the author's new translations of the full texts, which restore the humor and rich detail often muted in previous English translations. Simple but never simplistic, these insightful interpretations and translations of some of the most cherished stories ever written will help you look deeply at your life, laugh lightly at your flaws, and make the changes needed to build a more meaningful, joyful work life.

4 out of 5 stars From Duckling to Swan, and Back Again........2007-04-26

It is so interesting to see the use of animal metaphors (Norgaard's duckling, Lundin's fish as in his "Fish for Life" books) in the OD literature. The common tale about the Pike Street market and its fish mongers is vivid to me because I have seen those flying fish several times in my trips to Seattle.

I can personally relate to the theme of this book in my organizational life as I rose to a senior upper management role, then "retired" in an Emeritus position, and was brought back as an internal consultant. Actually I never left the organization and have been working there continuously for about 29 years, and now am back in touch with the grass roots of the work force working daily with young staff, as well as with project leaders and senior managers who were the new echelon in the earlier days when I was in my zenith position. What I now see through frequent contact with young inexperienced staff is the presence of youthful eagerness and creative energy that encounters the staid organizational culture of conformance and compliance -- and the consequent transformation of "unique, natural talents" into technical assets that define our organization's capabilities and offerings.

Mette's book suggests to me that we all have beginnings in our work life as ugly ducklings seemingly out of place with the establishment in our infancy stage, but then eventually transforming into beautiful swans that align nicely with the rest of the mature organizational flock. What strikes me is the realization that the mature compliant organizational person has an ugly ducking self suppressed and denied in adopting the behavior and beliefs of acceptable and expected performance. At present, when I look into my reflection on the water surface, I am aware of being an organizational swan but I see the image of an ugly ducking who once was free, unfettered, and different from the rest of the flock.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-03-25

This book is wonderful! I have to admit that I was skeptical at first thinking the author would give trite interpretations of the fairy tales. But WOW! I really liked it. I liked it because of the format and the insights. First, Dr. Norgaard starts each section with a "Did you Know" section that gives great context of the author and some of the facts about the fairy tell. There is also a summary and full length version of the fairy tell--both valuable either as a first time summary or a detailed review of the original text.

Second, Dr. Norgaard enables the reader to discover some great insights to the stories that I found valuable. The book would have been trite had Dr. Norgaard provided the "how" or the application of each story. Instead she asked very insightful questions that helped me make the application and want to dig deeper into the meaning.

In short, I think this is a wonderful book to help in business or personal pursuits alike. I'm going to recommend this book to my clients. Take a read. I think you'll really enjoy it.

                    5 out of 5 stars I love this book.......2006-02-22

I enjoyed this book since the first page.
Take all the tales (full story or the summary) along with the author's analysis; shake them all, and you will be ready to create your mission statement. You will be ready to find the real values in all you do, in your personal and professional life.
I experienced through each story the search and discovery of the authentic things.
My favorite tale ... "The nisse at the grocer's"; growing intellectually, being always open to changes meanwhile conjugating our internal opposites, now I'm facing North, and now I'm facing South, but it's still me. As the Mette Norgaard wrote "When we are real we know who we are".

                    Great, great book

2 out of 5 stars Round holes and square pegs.......2006-01-19

I enjoyed re-reading the fables by HC Anderson again but by trying to link it to the business world, it seemed like the author is trying to make a square peg fit into a round hole. So, to enjoy the book, read the fable, read the wisdom for the workplace portion as a stand alone. Some of the ideas suggested by the author are gems although no new ground was broken.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Delight - Discovering Wisdom Through Stories.......2005-10-22

This book is a gem. Mette Norgaard brings alive the timeless stories of Hans Christian Andersen. As an aficionado and practioneer of narrative I am inspired by Mette's ability to make these stories jump off the page and tickle our sensibilities. Anyone interested in learning how to work with stories to continually find new shades of meaning and insight will be delighted by this timely work.

5 out of 5 stars Easy-to-Read Stories Illustrate Workplace Challenges.......2003-03-31

Stories about people with learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder that illustrate good and not-so-good strategies for handling the many problems in the workplace, finding the right job, whether or not to tell people about your disability, handling trouble wisely, and being fired. The format of the "tales" makes easy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Legal rights but also a good dose of common sense.......2001-06-06

The authors discuss the legal rights of an individual with AD/HD in the workplace. They also look at the issue of matching oneself to the right job.

This is not a "let's sue them right away" type book. They prefer to find ways to work things out in less confrontational ways. However if all else fails, they explain how to proceed in the legal arena.

The book discusses when to disclose an AD/HD-related disability and when it might be prudent to be silent. It makes suggestions about simple accomadations that might make work easier for both employee and employer.

There may have been some changes in the law since this book first came out, but most of the general principals are the same.

From the supplier: Business writing in a workplace environment can be effectively taught at the introductory level by adopting workplace rules and regulations in the classroom. One approach is for the instructor to assume the role of a boss in a company. This strategy, which has already been implemented for many years, requires an instructor to invest more time with their students because their performance is a reflection of his competence.

From the supplier: A company should enforce a carefully designed policy for dealing with sexual-harassment claims to elude liability and legal costs, maintain high-quality employees and retain the goodwill of customers. The 'Steiner v. Showboat Operating Co.' and 'Saxton v. AT&T' cases demonstrate the importance of developing and introducing a fair and reasonable personnel policy regarding workplace sexual harassment. The eight elements that should be present in such a policy are discussed.

Colette Peters is a true artist. Her cakes, which I've seen in person, are remarkable. Her books are very thorough and concise. I am no artist, but I have made several of her cakes and they all turned out great! She is able to explain the cake-making process so that even I can understand how to do it. I have all her books and love them all!
