Book Description
Daniel Clark demonstrates the dramatic impact unionization made on the lives of textile workers in Henderson, North Carolina, in the decade after World War II. Focusing on the Harriet and Henderson Cotton Mills, he shows that workers valued the Textile Workers Union of America for more than the higher wages and improved benefits it secured for them. Specifically, Clark points to the importance members placed on union-instituted grievance and arbitration procedures, which most labor historians have seen as impediments rather than improvements.
From the signing of contracts in 1943 until a devastating strike fifteen years later, the union gave local workers the tools they needed to secure at least some measure of workplace autonomy and respect from their employer. Union-instituted grievance procedures were not without flaws, says Clark, but they were the linchpin of these efforts. When arbitration and grievance agreements collapsed in 1958, the result was the strike that ultimately broke the union. Based on complete access to company archives and transcripts of grievance hearings, this case study recasts our understanding of labor-management relations in the postwar South.

The explosive growth of the Internet economy over the past several years and new IP-based enterprise applications has heightened requirements for continuous availability of mission-critical data. Today's network administrators and managers are under big pressure to satisfy ever-increasing demands from customers, suppliers, and employees for 100 percent network resource availability and access to applications and data. The end result is that the cost of a network security breach has never been higher. Accordingly, the demand for networking professionals with expert-level network security configuration and troubleshooting skills is also great. The Cisco Systems CCIE Security certification is a prestigious program that sets the professional benchmark for internetworking expertise, validating proficiency with advanced technical skills required to design, configure, and maintain a wide range of network security technologies.
CCIE Security Practice Labs provides a series of complete practice labs that mirror the difficult hands-on lab exam. Written by a CCIE Security engineer and Cisco Systems CCIE proctor, this book lays out seven end-to-end scenarios that are both complex and realistic, providing you with the practice needed to prepare for your lab examination and develop critical-thinking skills that are essential for resolving complex, real-world security problems. While many engineers are able to configure single technologies in standalone environments, most will struggle when dealing with integrated technologies in heterogeneous environments.
CCIE Security Practice Labs consists of seven full-blown labs. The book does not waste time covering conceptual knowledge found in other security manuals, but focuses exclusively on these complex scenarios. The structure of each chapter is the same, covering a broad range of security topics. Each chapter starts with an overview, equipment list, and general guidelines and instructions on setting up the lab topology, including cabling instructions, and concludes with verification, hints, and troubleshooting tips, which highlight show and debug commands. The companion CD-ROM contains solutions for all of the labs, including configurations and common show command output from all the devices in the topology.
"Security is one of the fastest-growing areas in the industry. There is an ever-increasing demand for the experts with the knowledge and skills to do it."
-Gert De Laet, Product Manager, CCIE Security, Cisco Systems
CCIE Security Practice Labs is part of a recommended study program from Cisco Systems that includes simulation and hands-on training from authorized Cisco Learning Partners and self-study products from Cisco Press.
Companion CD-ROM
The CD-ROM contains the solutions to the seven complete lab scenarios in the book including configurations and show command output.
This volume is part of the Cisco Press Practical Studies Series, which offers readers a means to apply their theoretical knowledge through hands-on lab scenarios for key networking technologies. This unique approach enables readers to practice and hone their internetworking skills while preparing for Cisco certification exams.

Good Tool For Those Trying To Get CCIE Certified.......2005-02-06
Not being a Cisco expert myself I can't speak much on the technical accuracy of the book. There are some reports out there of mistakes in some of the labs, however CCIE classes and boot camps can cost thousands of dollars and many CCIE workbooks and preparation programs cost well into the hundreds of dollars. For the $50 price of this book I think a few mistakes can be tolerated. In the end, even if there may be a few mistakes, there are seven practice lab scenarios to help you learn and practice configuration and troubleshooting of solutions. The accompanying CDROM contains the solutions to the lab exercises including the configurations and the output of the SHOW commands. In my experience it is possible that a few mistakes here and there may actually make the experience of using a book like this even better. The process of troubleshooting to determine what the mistakes are generally serves to strengthen the information and cement it in your mind.

Great CCIE Lab tool.......2004-09-10
I recently read the book titled "CCIE Security Practice Labs (CCIE Self-Study)", by Yusuf Hussain Bhaiji. ISBN: 1587051346. This is a great book to use for preparing for the CCIE Security Lab. The main benefit that this book has to offer is that it allows the reader to think outside of the box and configure different Cisco network security devices and features in a way that would otherwise be overlooked.
The book is made up of 7 practice labs which are fairly equal in complexity. As the author states in the book, the labs are relatively straight forward, however it's the detail that one needs to pay attention to in order to help reinforce skills needed to pass the CCIE Security Lab.
Technologies covered in this book include a fairly good portion on general network features such as IP routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP and RIP), a few data link layer WAN technologies (ISDN, Frame Relay), Firewall and Intrusion Detection scenarios as well as Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA).
The labs give the reader a mixed bag of scenarios that is designed to challenge not just the configuration of each individual piece of the architecture, but more so the configuration of all features and protocols in a given unlikely scenario.
I like the way in which the book is laid out, because it is designed to allow the reader to really think through how to accomplish a given task by presenting the task in loose pseudo code verbiage.
There are adequate diagrams and screen prints that help map out the objective of each lab. Each lab has a diagram associated with it to help the reader understand visually, what is being accomplished. I think this helps a great deal when mapping the lab to ones memory.
After each lab, which is broken out into sections, the authors gives hints on how to accomplish what has been ask of the reader to build in the lab environment. Again, I like the format, because the answers are not given away fully. Causing the reader to comprehend what they are doing and not just pasting in configurations. However, for those who can't stand digging for answers, and like the answers upfront, a CD-ROM that contains the entire configuration for the lab is included with the book.
Each section of each lab is broken up into tasks and given a weight or points on successful accomplishment of that particular section. According to the word on the street, in the real CCIE Security LAB, if you miss one little detail on a section, you don't get any credit for that section. So you night have the section 75% right and 25% wrong, but you get 0% credit for that section. Which make the CCIE Lab a toughie. That's why it's all about the details, details, details.
CD-ROM contains lab configurations, but they're all contained in one ACSII file. Have to cut and paste out configuration and look for the output for each configuration. Would be better to have the output and configuration in separate files for separate devices. Each lab is kind of jammed into one file. Not pretty for viewing, but effective.
Overall I think this a good book to compliment Cisco Press strong documentation relating to network Security and to help someone achieve the coveted CCIE certification.
Get a feel of CCIE Security Lab.......2004-08-15
I did my CCNP about 2 years ago. Have a big Cisco Lab at home. For long time I was loking for a book that can give me a real feel of actual CCIE labs. I found that in this book. The CD has all the answers for the all 7 labs. Since I have not attempted the exam yet, I don't know how close they are from real exam.
benefit of a doubt because..........2004-06-25
I am a CCNP, CCDP and getting experience at work in Cisco ops. I am slowly pursuing CCIE as time permits.
I have brought this book and any other Cisco titles that will help me practice, practice, etc. So I have not gone thru any or all the labs. In fact I am currently pursuing the CCSP this year and practicing on my router/switches as time permits.
I have also ordered the CCIE practice R/S coming soon, and may pursue that first since I have much more gear. I don't have the PIX, VPN .... which is around another $5-7K but pretty close to what I need for ccie r/s. So why am I giving it 5 stars because other books/workbooks cost many times more than this. So the one interview which gave this a bad rap, he has dug into it and knows but this type of material usually is many times the cost of this book. If you have the gear, want to pursue ccie its worth it.
Otherwise ccie prep classes $2-4k, ccie workbooks $hundreds of dollars, so these Cisco CCIE practices labs, practicals are GREAT as far as I am concerned. Its quite possible and probably true that they contain "errors" but us so called CCIE candidates are supposed to be "experts" or are we just looking for something so we can just follow the cookbook and earn the CCIE title.
I for one want to work thru the configurations and figure it out to become a CCIE. Either I have what it takes or not. If I can't figure it out then I don't deserve the title.

Great book for CCIE Security Lab Exam.......2004-03-27
After searching for resources for the CCIE security exam, I found this book (CCIE Practical Studies: Security, ISBN: 1-58705-110-9) from Cisco Press website. Even though the title is ¡§Practical Studies: Security¡¨, it should contain more practical studies on security part of the lab exam. ¡§CCIE Practical Studies: Security¡¨ is useful for experienced Networkers to practice the security lab exams by deploying case studies and sample labs before the exam.
An advance feature of this book is it provides a lot of case scenarios. Throughout the book, readers can learn Cisco¡¦s security implementations by step-by-step configurations. Other useful features also include: Review questions and FQAs at the end of all chapters (except Chapter 26: Sample Lab Scenarios) which help readers to get solid idea of security principles and impermanent. The solutions of the 8 complete lab scenarios from the companion CD-ROM also illustrate the complexity of the CCIE Security lab exam.
However, I only give this book four out of five stars since some of the topics listed on the CCIE security written exam blueprint are missing from the book. Two of them are Cisco Secure Policy Manager and Cisco Secure Scanner. CCIE Candidates might not need to configure those Cisco Applications during the lab exam, however, every CCIE should know how to run those applications and how they work. I would love to see those topics will be covered in the next edition of this book. And, If you want to know the principal of Committed Access Rate (CAR), details on Intrusion Detection and specification on Security in General, you should read ¡§CCIE Professional Development Network Security Principle and Practices¡¨ by Saadat Malik (ISBN 1-58705-025-0) first.
Another problem of the book is it uses 42% of its 1000 pages on Routing and Switching, those chapters should be leaved to other books suggested by Cisco Systems (Routing TCP/IP by Doyle and Cisco LAN Switching by Clark and Hamilton). This is book should focus on security part of the exam only. It should mention more on Intrusion detection and Network-Based Application Recognition (NBAR). In my opinion, the first three chapters should also be summarized into a small chapter. CCIE candidate should know how to ¡§formulate a study plan¡¨ or ¡§take regular breaks while studying¡¨. People who don¡¦t know those ¡§study habits¡¨ should take a learning assistance class in a junior college. CCIE exam is one of the toughest professional exams for network administrator and network security engineer. So, if you don¡¦t know how to deal with problems, such as ¡§There¡¦s too much to remember¡¨, don¡¦t take the exam.
Poor Cisco IOS commands organization is also a reason that this book has only four stars. For example in Chapter 17: IP services (page 558), under section ¡§Monitor the MNLB Forwarding Agent¡¨
The book said
¡§To display the status of affinities, or connection information, use the following command:
R2#show ip casa affinities
To display the operational status of the Forwarding Agent, use the following command:
R2#show ip case oper
To display ¡K.¡¨
The section can be rewrote like this
¡§To monitor the status of the MNLB Forwarding Agent.
R2#show ip casa [options]
Options
affinities the status of affinities, or connection information
oper the operational status
stats the statistical information
wildcard information about wildcard blocks¡¨
This is much clear, easy to read and save time if you need to look up the command real quick. Other Cisco press books used the similar format, but I don¡¦t know why this book didn¡¦t follow it.
As the writer wrote in the book ¡§No single source ¡V including this book ¡V can or should claim to be a one-stop solution for the CCIE lab preparation.¡¨ (page 901), readers who are preparing for the exam should also consider buying other books from Cisco Press or searching more information on Cisco Security Applications from Cisco Connection Online. I would recommend this book to CCIE Security candidates who need lab practices and configuration examples. Although you can find plenty of examples from Cisco.com, the book is worth to buy for lab practices before the Armageddon.

Great book to prepare for CCIE Security Lab Exam.......2003-12-27
I would like to congratulate Dmitry and his team and cisco press for putting together this title. This book covers all the topics in good details with examples. It covers 12.2(15)T IOS features which are not easily found elsewhere. Amount of information and labs contained in this book will take anyone hundreds of hours to go through these labs and will certainly prepare them for THE CCIE lab. I am sure Concentrator and IDS chapters will be added in due time.
Full scale labs are very well laid out. If you are prepping for this test, you must go through these labs couple of times.
Great job Dmitry and crew! way to go!

Incredible work by the authors!!!!.......2003-12-09
Incredible work by the authors. I like the way this book is laid out. The neat thing about it is the way it combines material which could be split into several books. My own CCIE study was not funded by an employer. I had to pay my own way (like most people), so having been able to save money on courses and books was a great benefit to me. The CCIE Security lab requires having a strong background in routing and switching and this book is a great bundle of information that reduces your search and study to the areas on which you are most likely to be tested. I don't have R&S CCIE, so seeing real examples of how routing & switching provides basis for security helped me pass the lab. I failed my first attempt because in my studies I assumed that it was going to be only security based, not realizing that I would be tested on the R&S background as well. I bought this book after I failed, and after completing all the practice labs in the book, I was able to get my CCIE after the second attempt. This book does not go into detail on IDS and VPN Concentrator, but I didn't have them on my test (maybe it was added afterwards).
I disagree with previous reviewer's comments. It seems like the author recommends taking 2 classes worth about $3200 each and buying several books which do not provide applicable lab scenarios instead of a $70-some investment into this book. Whatever topics are not listed in this book (and they can't, otherwise the book would need a forklift to pick it up) can be easily found on CCO for free. It's funny that the reviewer is admitting that somebody with a different background from theirs would give it 5 stars. Well, it seems that my background is different and I do give it 5 stars.
Should have covered the Security Topics only............2003-12-07
I ordered this book in the hope that it would help me study for the CCIE Security Lab exam. I already have Soli's Practical Studies (both volumes). The beginning chapters in the book are related to Ethernet, ISDN, Routing Protocols etc. Don't expect the same level of detail for these topics here that you would find in Soli's book or in Jeff Doyle's book. Use those books to cover these topics. The security Practices (Part IV) of the book is why you bought this book.
Being an instructor for almost all cisco security courses, I was disappointed by the level of detail in Chapters 14 through 17. But then, the book might be covering just what you need for your exam. In my opinion, you need Saadat Malik's book Network Security Principles and Practices. I would give that book 5 stars!.
For me, the only chapters worth anything were Advanced VPNs (Chapter 20) and Chapter 26 (Sample Lab Scenarios -- which has eight scenarios).
The VPN Concentrator, which now appears on the lab is nowhere to be seen in this book. This is a big MINUS for this book.
Depending on your background with network security, you might want to give a better rating to this book as to the depth of the material covered. If you already have Doyle + Soli's books, get Sadat Malik's book + IOS Network Security documentation and attend the CSVPN course and CSIDS courses (if you can). This book does not cover the IDS Sensor at all. It only covers the limited IDS of the PIX and routers.
I would have liked it better if the routing/switching topics would have been left off totally from this book and the focus would have been entirely on the Security stuff (read VPN Concentrator and the IDS Sensor etc). People would tell you that you can get them off the Documentation CD. Well, if so, the stuff that the book has is also on the doc. cd :-)
