Revised Second Edition- Study after study reaches the same conclusion - in America today, it's not who you are but what you are. More and more CEO's are graduating from public universities instead of the Ivy League. But how do you know what you are? How do you know the talents you have? How do you determine what job or profession is right for you? Now, there's a book that gives you all the answers. Newly revised by Lazar Emanuel, lawyer and CEO of the Highlands Co., and Tom Tavantzis,Ed.D., Director of Organizational Psychology Studies at St. Joseph's University, this seminal work by Bob McDonald,Ph.D., and Don Hutcheson, tells you how to discover your hard-wired talents and move towards your ultimate goal - contentment, fulfillment and increased productivity. Every one of us is born with the ability to be great at something. The secret lies in identifying that ability and using it. McDonald and Hutcheson asked hundreds of successful people: what made you successful? Everyone's story was different, but one answer was the same for all - all successful people create and are guided by a clear personal vision - an accurate and precise picture of the work that expresses their talents best. This remarkable book holds the key to success - identify your natural talents and work where you can use them. Long-term research shows that when people focus on their natural abilities and follow a strategic plan based on a strong personal vision, they experience the profound and lasting benefits of reduced stress, more overall balance, decreased burnout and greater satisfaction. Don't Waste Your Talent provides the link to your niche in life. It opens doors to a more productive career and to the satisfaction of knowing that you're using your talents to the fullest.

Valuable tool for everyone!.......2006-02-01
Genre: Self Help/business
Title: Don't Waste your Talent - The 8 Critical Steps to Discovering What You Do Best
AUTHOR: Bob McDonald, PH.D. and Don E. Hutcheson
This book is about identifying and using your talents. It is about The Highlands Program and The Highlands Personal Vision Factors-the structure and process we developed because we believe that people deserve to be on higher ground in their lives and careers.
From Introduction.
Do you want to use all of your potential in your career and your life? Do you feel that you are in a dead end job with nowhere to go? Does your work make you happy or unfulfilled? If you have asked yourself any of these questions, this is the book for you.
The first three chapters deal with The Lemming Conspiracy, the Stress Cycle/Balance Cycle and career/life expanding development over your entire lifespan from age 17-85+. The book discusses natural "Turning Points" that all of us experience. It teaches that with the use of the Personal Vision Factors to compose and begin your own Personal Vision or holistic map, you too can live life to the fullest.
Filled with actual true-life examples, readers move from chapter to chapter in a concise and methodical way, which enriches the experience. Turning points are discussed in depth, next we learn to identify our "hard wired" talents and assets, chapter 5 brings skills, personality and interests into the equation and finally values and goals. From here we learn about systems that have affected our lives such as the "Family of Origin" system, and the "Office System", etc and then how to create personal boundaries. After each chapter there is a Thought Experiment, which helps the reader move through the various stages. All that is required is a 50- page notebook and a lot of honesty and soul searching.
Well presented, easy to follow and comprehensive this reviewer was fascinated with the entire process of preparing the Personal Vision. An excellent tool for employees, corporations, students and even retirees, this book offers us a chance to change our world and how we live our lives for the better. Parents would be advised to give a copy to their children in order to help them make future choices.
Readers can order the Highlands Ability Battery from the author's website which works hand in hand with the book. Authors Bob McDonald, Don Hutcheson and second edition contributions by Lazar Emanuel and Thomas Tavantzis have produced an insightful and valuable tool for everyone regardless of age or career status.

Discover your abilities, use your talents.......2001-10-12
This book is for people serious about gaining more self-awareness of their own abilities. I say that because there are lots of principles and ideas shared in this book, but one of the most valuable parts of it are the thought experiments in every chapter which guide you toward personal application of the principles. When you buy this book, get a notebook or journal to go along with it. That will greatly increase the value of the concepts.
The authors have crafted what they call the Personal Vision Process, made up of eight components: your natural talents and abilities, skills and life experience, interests, personality, values, goals, family history, and your stage of life development. It is a very comprehensive model and draws on solid work in developmental psychology.
I think the previous review was off-base that called into question the authors' work. It's clear they have done their homework, and if you're looking for career direction, don't you want a guide that is fairly optimistic and supportive?
The authors have developed a CD called the Highlands Ability Battery that profiles your own ability pattern. I purchased this separately and completed the process. It was very helpful to do this with a trained consultant. The book has a self-assessment in it that you can complete, but I found the personal feedback from the consultant much more nuanced and customized to me.
Back to my first statement: this book is for those serious about gaining self-awareness of their abilities and setting their life/career direction. Except for the few rugged individualists, you will benefit most from working through the book with a friend, career counselor, coach, or a group that is providing support. For those seeking life direction, this is one of the best processes I've seen.
This book is mostly a waste itself.......2001-10-10
This book falls squarely in the self-help book genre and has all of the usual oversimplifications. One is urged to shed the various nefarious social systems which have operated on one since birth causing untold Stress, to find one's True Self, and to return to those very systems, mostly family and work, a new recharged and in-charge person. According to the authors, most simply need to go through a self-assessment process and thought experiments to reveal Personal Visions for the future.
Nowhere in the book do the authors discuss the power dynamics of the broader economy, society, and the polity and the impacts on persons. Managers are depicted not as powerful players in organizations who demand adherence to rules but as employee allies who want you to achieve your self-defined goals. Perhaps the authors could have reflected on the reason that labor unions formed. Or perhaps they could have pondered as to why social-democratic political parties exist in most democratic societies. The answer is most certainly not that corporations are interested in your True Self. Try the fact that workers and citizens need help against powerful players.
The authors operate a company that sells Whole Person Technology out of which comes a Personal Vision. Their customers are mostly large corporations which only adds suspicion about whom is to benefit. In fact, most of their individual customers seem to find happiness where they were previously unhappy. How convenient. For the readers of this book a battery of tests is available on CD for the tidy sum. The book has an unmistakable feel of being a promo for their self-help products.
In addition, the book is clearly intended for professionals, executives, managers, knowledge workers, etc. The book is loaded with snippets of case studies of such workers. Of course, they all found their Personal Vision. Apparently blue-collar workers don't have near the need to find a True Self.
Is the book completely bogus. No. It is Briggs-Myers on the cheap. Yes, distinctions between introversion and extroversion, specialization and generalization, logical and spontaneous, etc are minimally presented. If someone was hopelessly in the wrong job, perhaps that would be seen by reading this book ignoring the question of how he or she got there in the first place. But the book greatly oversimplifies the ability of individuals to make major transformations in their lives. I suspect that for most the costs and risks, resources and information available, and the power to affect change make real changes nearly impossible. And books that oversimplify the problems do not help.
.......Speackless.......2001-05-11
Great book. Didnt want to put it down!! These two quys figured my out, read me like a book! Im ready for success
Practical Help for Life's Turning Points.......2001-01-24
I enjoyed this book enough to read it several times and to give it to several friends. The authors weave years of experience and research findings into a plan book for discovering who we are and where we fit best. In doing so the book tackles head on the questions that so many of us have about fitting within the systems that surround us.
While most people would like to have life on their own terms, most are unclear on what those terms are. This book helps us uncover those terms through explanations, true stories and thought experiments that lead the reader through the interplay of one's core abilities, skills, interests, style, family background, values, goals and career development cycle.
This is a hands-on book-one that encourages active participation as well as simple understanding. It is inspirational without being glib; radical without sacrificing practicality. I recommend it to anyone who feels he or she is at a turning point.

A 'must-have' for the serious collector.......2003-06-29
With over 100 cookbooks in my collection, I no longer buy books just for a collection of recipes. I want interesting information about culinary traditions, etc. and this book has all of that. It has a great overview of Indian regional cooking, lovely pictures, and good illustrative recipes besides. Serious gourmets will *not* be disappointed.
A fantastic introduction to Indian cooking.......2002-02-11
This is a great book - not only are the recipes superb and quite distinctive, but Madhur Jaffrey writes about the food with such passion and feeling that it just makes you want to cook. When she describes a dish as one "I love with a passion" you can be sure that it will not disappoint. For cooks trying out Indian food for the first time, following her recipes precisely can almost guarantee an Indian meal that will earn rave reviews from friends and family.
Recipes which are not same old ones.......2000-12-23
This is a book that was given to me some years ago when I was in India. It is not just a cook book but it conveys a picture of India. The book is broken into sections based on India's main regions. Each chapter has magnificent photo's of those regions and a text which describes the cuisine.
Each region then has a series of recipes that are famous. Most Indian cookery books tend to show how to cook the sorts of things that you get in Indian restaurants. Chicken Tandoori, Rogan Josh and so forth. This book has recipes which I have never come across before and most of them are interesting and delightful. A lot of them use a limited range of spices and depend on the mixture of their ingredients to develop subtle and interesting flavors. One recipe that was a revelation was an eggplant (aubergine) dish which was cooked and served cold with a yogurt sauce.
I live with a vegetarian and one of the reasons I enjoy such cook books are the variety of vegetarian foods that they contain. This book is by no means devoted to vegetarian food but it contains many such recipes.
The recipes are in text form but they are easy to follow. If something unusual has to be done such as the preparation of tamarind, the author explains how to do it in a clear and simple way.
Some cook books are things that you have on the shelf simply to prepare food. This book is a little more and gives you a feel for the county which has provided the recipes.
Why buy this book?.......2000-08-21
1. It is a good cook book, with beautiful recipies that work. 2. The food is presented in context in which it is eaten in India. 3. This is like a travelogue of India through its food. So if you like India, travel, food, cooking or books about cooking food in different parts of India, then this is the book for you.
An Excellent Reference.......2000-05-26
Madhur Jaffrey's book is both beautiful and informative. It includes sections of elegant prose accompanied by gorgoeus photos that describe the cuisine in different regions of India. This is what makes the book worthwhile-- it teaches you a great deal about the variety and splendour of a cuisine that is insuffiecintly represented in the United States. However, I find the recipes themselves a little less useful. They are very, very heavy on added oil (I made the Moghlai chicken the other day and it called for 1 whole stick of butter and 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil.) and not that heavy on flavor. I find myself wondering if Jaffrey has toned down the spiciness for a Western audience. Though the information in the book is quite welcome I think that more modern, fusion approaches to Indian cuisine are healthier and more relevant (see The Bold Vegetarian by Bharti Kirchner).

An Adventure in Every Bite.......2006-10-13
A Taste of Madras is one of my favorite cookbooks and I have scores of Indian cookbooks, as I'm sort of a gourmet chef. I wrote a cooking column for a sailing magazine for a couple years and one of my favorite articles was my "Two Ways to Tandoori" which you can read in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides," if you want. Tandoori chicken is just delicious. Anyway, while I was making the guide, I listed fifty cookbooks from my collection. I have more. I know, I know, one would think a couple books would be enough, but it's sort of an obsession with me, making food taste great and I just love to see how others have done it.
While I was doing the guide, I pulled out all my Indian Cookbooks, had them all stacked around me. Then I decided to pull out all the ones I didn't think I could live without. It came to an even dozen and A Taste of Madras was one of the books. The recipes are just divine. I've never been to India, been a lot of places, but never there. Delhi, Bombay, Ganges, names that just ring with adventure. I imagine I'm there every time I cook up something Indian. I can feel the smells as they wrap their delicious flavors all around the kitchen, or galley, if I'm cooking on board the sailboat my husband Dub and I live on half the year. You won't go wrong with this book. Check it out. Check out my other eleven too. Cook up something from India tonight, taste the adventure.

Not A Really Authentic Madras Taste!.......2004-11-24
I would give average to this book. the author says the taste of Madras but truly Madras has more taste and culture in its cuisine.
I have tried a couple of dishes - they turned out okay. Authentic Madras food would also be good healthy vegetarian diet. This book does not come anywhere near this.
A great overview of south indian cuisine.......2004-03-09
As a person brought up on South Indian cuisine, but now living in the West, I found this cookbook invaluable in reprising the tastes of my home, and introducing me to some new dishes that I had never tried before. It was clearly written and all the recipes I attempted were very delicious. It has cemented my belief that South Indian cuisine is the 'best kept secret' for the modern food connoisseur.

Not an authentic south indian cookbook!!!.......2001-04-05
A huge disappointment!! If you are a Madrasi/looking for authentic or serious Madrasi - tasting dishes, forget it!! This will be O.K for somebody wanting to imitate Madrasi/south indian cooking or for a brand new beginner. Most of the recipes call for couple of basic spices (eg. chilli pd.,turmeric pd.,ginger-garlic)...That's it! But, the names given to these recipes are madrasi-sounding definitely.Any way what kind of cookbook author would call a curry leaf- neem leaf!! I am pretty sure it was not a printing error.

Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Amazing Indian food.......2005-07-06
I have been consistently pleased by the recipes in this book, from Spiced Cauliflower with Cashews to Stuffed Cabbage Leaves with Peanut and Ginger Sauce. Also a favorite is the Banana Raita--sooo good. This cookbook can be a little difficult at first if you don't know what an aubergine (eggplant) or courgette (zucchini) is, but this problem is minimal, especially because of the quality of the recipes.
Another drawback to the cookbook is that there is no index, but since there are only 120 recipes divided into 10 sections, it is not difficult to find what you are looking for.
A tip for using this cookbook would be to either have a conversion chart for measuring (easily attainable online) or to use a small scale. The ingredients are measured in grams and fluid ounces, which might be quite a setback for someone who does not know how to figure this out.
I would not recommend this cookbook to someone just starting out with vegan food. Something like "Vegan Planet" would be more helpful in describing terms and making recipes easy to understand. But for the experienced vegan cook, I highly recommend Linda Majzlik's Indian cookbook. I have never had better vegan Indian food than when I have cooked her recipes, even eating at fine Indian restaurants. For someone who loves to cook and isn't deterred by some funky measurements, this is a must have.
whole series terrible.......2004-11-10
I ordered four vegan cookbooks from this author (Italian, Mexican, Indian, Caribbean). I hate them all. First off, they are small and contain few recipes. Half the recipes they contain are for items I either wouldn't cook from scratch (tortilla's) or are so basic they are found in every other cookbook on my shelf (tomato sauce).
Next, the books are from the UK so you better know how much a dessertspoon is, what "hard vegan cheese" is, as well as know what an aubergine or courgette is. There is no glossary or nutritional information given in any of the books for any of the recipes.
But by far, the most irritating feature of this author and her books is her love of nuts. No matter what cuisine the book is suppose to be about, the recipes are filled with nuts....walnuts, filbernuts, hazelnuts, etc. It would be fair to say that at least 2/3'rds of the recipes in each book contain nuts. In the Italian book 7 of 8 recipes in one chapter contain nuts! I've eaten in many an Italian restaurant and not once have I ever had a dish with walnuts in it. This woman is nuts for nuts.
So, even at the low price, I cannot recommend these books to anyone, especially those with nut allergies.

not very good.......2004-07-19
It's probably a good tip to never use a cookbook by someone who doesn't know that a potato is a vegetable......otherwise, not the best of food.
Excellent Food.......2004-01-21
I had the good fortune of being the author's housemate for a number of years, and enjoying her cooking. Her Sri Lankan recipes produce wonderful results. She even taught me (confirmed bachelor who hadn't yet learned to cook) a few recipes, so I can tell you she's very good at step-by-step instruction as well.
A great place to begin..........2004-01-16
This book is a great place to begin for those of us who are not familiar with Sri Lankan food. The introduction explains the basics and the recipes are clear, and if all else fails there is a link to the authors web page for questions.
Sri Lankan Home Cooking.......2004-01-13
I love this pretty little cookbook. It has tasty recipes that are mostly easy to prepare, with a finite number of ingredients that are easy to keep on hand, so it's more home cooking than elaborate restaurant fare. This is a sort of exotic food that you can get to know while having a busy life. And the book tells you a lot about Sri Lankan ingredients, food preparation and the role of these foods in home life. It's very new but already one of my favorite cookbooks.
Exotic Food.......2004-01-13
I love this cookbook. The food is tasty and easy to make. The cover is beautiful and the comments by the author are interesting.

A Great Primer!.......2006-03-18
A great cookbook or coffeetable book, this book is bold in color and full of interesting information about the intersection of Indian food and culture- all presented in the form of a cookbook.
I highly reccomend this and a trip to a local international grocery for anyone interesting in learning to cook indian food! It's extremely rewarding.
My 2 biggest tips:
1. DO NOT buy your spices at an American grocer, go to international markets. Price and quality are far superior
2. If you are not used to extremely hot food, or have heartburn, just cut the chillies out of the recipes or moderate them.
