Inside The Tornado.......2007-08-03
Classic textbook style. Lots of charts and good information. Moore's writing style is basic academic but available nevertheless. If you do marketing in a fast-growing busines or emerging market, this is an essential part of your toolkit. The paper and printing are pocket paperback quality.
WOW!.......2007-06-11
Granted I haven't yet read the predecessor to this book, Crossing the Chasm, but this is the best business book I have read focusing on the external aspects of business. Most business books focus internally - what you and/or your company needs to do. This book takes the approach that what one does has a dependency on what's going on with the market.
The market, as defined in Crossing the Chasm, and repeated here, is divided into five sections/phases - Innovators (techies), Early Adopters (visionaries), Early Majority (pragmatists), Late Majority (conservatives), and Laggards (skeptics). Each of these groups has it's own needs that must be addressed. The predecessor deals with the "chasm" between the Early Adopters and the Early Majority. This book focuses on the tornado that occurs when a company/product gains traction with the Early Majority.
This book also borrows the concepts of "value disciplines" from "The Discipline of Market Leaders" and applies it to the various sections. There are three, somewhat mutually exclusive, disciplines - product leadership, operational excellence, and customer intimacy. It shows how initially the keys to success are focusing on product leadership and customer intimacy. Then, in the tornado, product leadership and operational excellence are key. Then, on main street, operational excellence and customer intimacy are critical.
The big challenge for people and for companies is, as with a manual transmission, shifting gears. This book does a fantastic job of explaining the changes needed at the different times, as well as how to determine when one reaches those times.
Excellent book for the technology market.......2007-05-03
Inside the Tornado is very insightful and descriptive of the technology life cycle and the experiences of a company throughout each phase. Each phase has its own dynamic of what is required of the product for success, the competition involved, roles as they relate to competition and positioning, and the leadership required throughout. Even though Inside the Tornado was written more than ten years ago, the overarching principles still apply as new technologies are created, adopted, and later replaced with a new paradigm to disrupt the market and start the cycle over again.
One of the best business books.......2006-02-20
This is probably the best and the most complete of the 3 books written by Geoffrey A. Moore. It is also one of the best business books that I have read in the past 5 years (I read a lot) . This is one of the few books that clearly states how that strategies that companies follow while crossing the Chasm differ from those while they are in the tornado or a mass adoption. It takes an indepth look at the general principles that an entrepreneurial venture should focus at during the inception stage including strategies for product design and deciding which verticals to target. It also describes how start up companies made their first sale and how they moved on from one vertical to another. And then how the very same companies adopted their products when the tornado arrived. In essence, it tells why and how companies like Oracle and Lotus could hold their ground and live under the radar in the presence of bigger rivals and how they outdid them.
This book is an exceptional resource for any Entrepreneur and business development manager or someone starting a new venture. I would highly recommend this book if you are an investment manager and invest in growth companies for this book gives you a yardstick to measure the progress of start ups and new ventures.
An AWESOME thought-provoker on high-tech strategy.......2005-12-13
Thankfully, this is NOT littered with platitudes and meaningless anaologies, the hallmarks of 99% of the latest-and-greatest business books. Especially since it was written in 1999, Moore's is an incredibly insightful and prophetic book on strategy for the high-tech industry. He was predicting cutting edge changes then that are coming into reality today in 2005. The book is much more descriptive than prescriptive though, and is best used as a tool to instigate discussions about corporate strategy, rather than as a checklist for strategic implementation.
I help run an online software development company and although it isn't exactly "high tech" I still found the vast majority of it very helpful and the rest of it fascinating. Market shifts are demanding broadband wireless Internet everywhere--free. Companies are shifting towards web-basing software applications. All very relevant to my business.
The book is well written, an easy and moderately fast read, and very accessible by anyone who is technology-savvy enough to at least hold an email address. Yes, buy it. Buy the paperback and save money.
Short Synopsis: In the infancy of a market, products need to be highly tailored to meet the psychological and technical needs of leading edge techno-geeks; nothing new here. When a company wants to take that product and make it marketable to the middle majority--where the biggest money sits--it requires a commitment to discipline and shift its strategy in order to do so. The emphasis shifts intially to identifying a single niche segment and creating a comprehensive, tailored product, that meets all of their needs--create the "whole product" by using partners and 3rd party services to patchwork the thing together. Then, stop tweaking the product. If that works, pick related niches and go after them the same way, creating the "whole product" for each of them. Once people at large are comfortable enough to make the paradigm shift for that market (this all deals with new, high-tech changes) and start doing so en masse, the strategy must completely shift again to a ship-first / fix-the-product-later mentality in a mad, market share scramble. At this phase, you are "In the Tornado." Lots of examples of successful and abysmal strategies used by high tech companies whose names are familiar to everyone, at each stage mentioned above.

Views from the crag.......2001-02-17
Under the hypotheses of high tech market characteristics, this book shows many different view points from before. Althought It can't be avoided that waste paragraphs was still usings, and that sentences without logic were dragged in to swell the total, those brand new and brave views still should be praised. We say semiconducter industry is one of the high tech. industries but the author disagreed; we say the key point of successing marketing is concerning the consumer but the author doesn't mention that thoughtout this book. Surprise happens with your studying. people who were intresting in marketing in hogh tech. market and product may try this.

Advice on how to overcome life's obstacles, and live the life you want, from one of today's most inspiring heroes
"It is as challenging a task to comment on Erin Brockovich as it was to portray her. She seems to defy description. I shall put it simply, because Erin is someone who appreciates a clear point. She is kind, and she is tireless. Erin is inspiring, and I know the world to be a better place because she is in it."--Julia Roberts
Erin Brockovich delivers her irrepressible spirit and down-to-earth wisdom in Take It from Me, an inspiring trove of stories, lessons, and motivational strategies anyone can use to summon their inner strength and free the winning forces that lie within us all.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable.......2006-05-11
I'll give this 3.5 stars. It's a deeper look at the woman behind the movie, Erin Brockovich. With wit and grace Erin tells the story of her broken marriages, the drug addiction of two of her children, and how she got through proving a difficult case against PG&E. Erin's honesty is refreshing, and I enjoyed her stories of talking to herself until she could figure out what to do. She says that sometimes you have to make your own decisions rather than relying on the advice of friends and I think that this is a valuable gift. There are times when you cannot reach your friends or you know that your situation is beyond their experience so the only person that can really help you work through it is YOU.
Erin's straight-shooter personality comes out in this book on every page. While she did have help writing the book, you can't help but notice Erin's voice.
I was very surprised as I read the book to find out about the hardships Erin had to endure both before and after the PG&E-Hinkley case. She tells of how almost all of her money went into a misrepresented house and taking care of her kids' addictions. She also tells the truth about "Jorge" from the movie and her dealings with Ed Masry.
She mentions the movie a few too many times throughout the book, so it gets a little irritating after the 10th time. However, I do appreciate her attempts at contrasting the movie with what really happened. It's just that several of her mentions of the movie are in little side comments that aren't really talking about the movie, but about the fact that her life SEEMS great because Julia Roberts played her, but that her life isn't great. This is fine, and needed to some extent, however, it happens many times throughout the book. Still, this is not enough to detract from the humorous, down-to-earth tale of the life of Erin Brockovich.
She's famous, right?.......2003-04-26
That's the only reason for this book to be. Having not seen the movie, I can't say I knew much about her story when I picked up the book. After reading the book, I still don't know a lot about it.
The account she gives in here of her life and the how eponymous movie was made is kind of interesting. The motivational schpiel that makes up most of the book is kind of gloopy and cliche. But going around and making inspirational speeches is her sideline these days, so it must be working for her.
Not exactly.......2003-02-22
Kind of like the car rental commercial.... not exactly what
I was hoping for. Erin cites her own personal effort, which
nobody can deny, for sure, but beyond this life-theory, there's
little more to this book. A better title would have been:
"I should have listened to my father...he was right." I'd
be really interested in a book on parenting by Mrs. Brockovich's
father. He seems like a really level headed guy.
Fantastic!.......2001-12-29
What an inspirational book. Simple and logical advice. I really enjoyed the book. Easy reading and didn't go on to long like other self help books. I recommend it as school reading and should be in libraries.
Great Lady.......2001-12-28
What a great lady! It was nice to read the real-life stories behind the Hollywood hype ... but the biggest surprise was that the truth was often more interesting and dramatic than the dramatization. Brockovich offers concrete advice to those who are trying to improve their lives -- she's a role model and inspiration to people everywhere. I also recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Wisdom" by Taro Gold. I have found much inspiration from both of these books.
Product Description
Nobody addresses the needs of a grieving person like Doug. His warm conversational style takes the reader through all the emotions and experiences that accompany the death of a loved one. The first section of this book deals with those first few days after a death, and all the plans and decisions that need to be made. The second section picks up the grief journey and provides guidance, assurances and hope for healing.

Incredibly helpful.......2007-08-19
My grandmother gave me this book about 6 months before she passed away. It helped her through my granfathers death and now it is helping me through hers.
This book is very short, to the point and not a bunch of psychological mumbo jumbo. It is refreshing, easy to read and interesting. You don't feel like you have to have a psychology degree in order to analyze your feelings to work through them. If you are looking for a difficult, heavy read, this is the wrong book for you. Expect to feel enlightened when you are done not analyzed.
A must for People in Grief.......2007-04-11
I have given away many copies of this book. It is the most practical book on grief I have ever read. A friend brought me my copy back in 1984 the day after my husband died. Sara

Book Description
In this series of new poems Gail Mazur takes stock-of the complexity of relationships between parents and children, the desires of the body as well as its frailties, the distinctions between memory and history, and the hope of art to capture these seemingly inscrutable realities. By turns mordant and passionate, narrative and meditative, Mazur's poems imply that life, with all of its losses, triumphs, and abrasive intimacies, is far richer and more elaborately metaphorical than poetry can aspire to be-and yet her poems do affectingly recreate this reality. These illuminating poems are the work of an acclaimed poet at the top of her form.

"a true poet.....".......2003-05-15
Gail is a true poet. Reading her book has made me a better
person and much more of a HUMAN being.................in that she helps me linger longer as I savour the true blue of Forget-Me-Nots in the spring or as I feel the welcomed warmth of the sun after a long winter in New England. If you've ever had children you will love her poem "Young Apple Tree, December". She stops time so you can enjoy the real and wonderful things in life that are so easily lost in an out-of-pace world.

Some Good Points.......2003-03-06
It is a book with some good poems- 'Girl In A Library', for example is fine. Mazur has issues though that get a bit too personal with the girl in the library. She fears for her ability to love in the future. There are also issues with her mother. It is a fine book with some fine writing but a bit too autobiographical.
Mazur's best book so far.......2001-04-21
Gail Mazur's poems are personal, often autobiographical, but they are rarely "merely" either. Her new collection, THEY CAN'T TAKE THAT AWAY FROM ME, is her best not only because the poems explore more deeply her abiding subjects: individual and cultural memory; the inner promptings of the soul and the "gossamer thread" (Whitman) of thought it flings out to the world; the strict consolations of art. Mazur's new poems push the stylistic envelope of the contemporary meditative lyric. Shining examples include the title poem with its long first sentence--a question!--expertly orchestrated over 36 lines; the "Five Poems Entitled 'Questions'" that initiate the book; or the piercing renditions--indelible tracings, really--of texts by Michelangelo and the postwar Italian poet, Vittorio Sereni. Key poems in the volume are deeply moving acts of imaginative empathy--"Young Apple Tree, December"; "Girl in a Library"--while others like "Twenty Lines Before Breakfast" crackle with linguistic invention. If you believe, as did Hardy, that "the poet should touch our hearts by showing his own ... takes note of nothing that he cannot feel...[and embodies] the emotion of all the ages and the thought of his own," then this book is for you.

Not Just for WWII Buffs.......2003-06-20
This is not a book for just WWII buffs. I guarantee that anyone who appreciates fascinating and well-written non-fiction with an original angle will love They Can't Take That Away From Me. What sold me was the unique and artistic style employed in this POW memoir; it brought a fresh perspective to Ralph Rentz's struggle, triumph and the invincibility of his nightmare.
More than just a "Sentimental Journey".......2003-06-10
They Can't Take That Away From Me truly is an odyssey of one, rather atypical, American POW. However, it is more than just a "Sentimental Journey". This memoir is unlike any other WWII story, in that it reaches beyond the prosaic collage of nostalgic gore and glory and invites the reader to hear the song inside the bruised head of a musician who finds himself without his band, his saxophone and clarinet, without his freedom and even his own sanity, but never without his music. It is a tough tale, but it is softened with a lyrical literary style that makes it flow like the Pacific. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about music, adventure and inimitable tragedy.
