Unleash Conflict's Creative Potential
Absolutely essential reading for anyone interested in identity conflicts and how to overcome them. Provides a fascinating theoretical introduction to the phenomena, detailed case study experiences, and a final training guide for practitioners...a landmark work.
--Kevin Clements, director, Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, George Mason University
Presenting a brilliant new approach to conflict resolution that will intrigue and inform practitioners and scholars alike. Writing from his remarkable range of academic and real-world experiences--including his historic work in bringing Israel and the PLO to the negotiation table--Rothman shows how identity-based conflict can be managed so that both parties reach a higher ground than either could have found on its own. His vehicle is his ARIA model, and here he traces the ARIA process through Antagonism, Resonance, Invention, and Action, demonstrating step-by-step how it can be applied in a variety of environments. Complete with field-tested assessment instruments and action plans, Resolving Identity-Based Conflict is a seamless union of theory and practice anyone seeking to turn the passion of conflict into the fuel of creativity can use.

Customer Reviews:
Worth the buy!.......2004-04-02
I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.
A book serves all your needs.......2004-04-02
This is an outstanding DFSS book for production development. It contains integrated information and some of which you could hardly find anywhere else, thus with one book in hand, you have all the tools to get to your destination. This is also a easy to read book providing the reader with a solid understanding- Concepts are clearly defined, real world examples/ case studies are fully described and the chapters are well organized. It can serve as a textbook for students/beginners and also can serve as a handbook for experienced engineers.
The title says it all- this is a roadmap for you to find the way correctly and easily. I am reading the book right now, and the book is really beneficial to me.
Full of information and errors.......2004-03-30
This is a book with a lot of information. Each chapter can be used as a starting point for a specific six sigma technique. However, this is the worst edited book I have ever read. You can hardly find one page without errors/typos.
A matchless guide.......2003-08-03
While the concept of six-sigma is a very popular one, it is not often that one can find such a comprehensive yet clearly-written volume devoted to the most important topics of six-sigma. A book that contains so much information and not just hot air is especially hard to find. Yang and El-Haik have successfully written one of the most impressive and useful reads I have ever encountered within this field. Especially intriguing and novel concept of TRIZ. A very worthwhile book, in any case.
Application Oriented.......2003-07-01
In recent times, there has been a lot of talk and hype about DFSS with very little substance thus far--until this one! I found the book an easy read, application oriented and a relatively prescritive approach to apply DFSS for products, processes and/or services. The sections on TRIZ and Axiomatic Design expose the opportunities largely untapped in the design world today. A must read book for organizations serious about Six Sigma--whether they are focused on delivering worldclass products and services to their customers or designing processes to run world class business operations--a thumbs up all the way!!

Customer Reviews:
Challenging but worthwhile.......2007-08-13
I don't disagree that Creveling's book is a challenging read, but I do think it's a worthwhile and reasonably comprehensive text on the topics. Many of the methods presented require a certain level of sophistication to execute correctly. If you don't understand the material, maybe you shouldn't be trying to use some of the tools.
Designing for Six Sigma.......2005-02-03
Disclosure: I'm a competitor of Skip's in the Design for Six Sigma field.
Skip obviously knows his stuff - he's written one of the most detailed descriptions of DFSS around. His differentiation of a methodology for technology development and product development is an important concept. The book provides a detailed step-by-step description of how to design a product for Six Sigma performance.
However, the book is really a tough read. I've been working in the DFSS field for the last 7 years and I found it a tough go. The methodology descriptions, while detailed, suffer from a lack of examples or a case study.
My other critique is that Skip describes the DFSS "nirvana" - if your development process is a bit informal, you'll start asking yourself "How in the world will I ever get to DFSS?" Some thoughts around how to transition from a typical development process to a DFSS-based approach would have been helpful.
Finally, one of my clients handed this book out to virtually all their engineers at the beginning of their DFSS iniative. When, a year or two later, I'd ask the engineers if they had the book, the answer was invariably "Yes." When I'd asked if they'd read the book, however, the answer was just as invariably "No."
If you already know about DFSS, its a great reference. If not, go buy one of the introductory books first.
Book Description
Leaders are now recognizing that product design is the primary driver of success. They are making it their primary target in their quest for delivering customers more value at less cost. Now Bart Huthwaite, founder of the Institute for Lean Design and recognized as America's Lean Design Coach, show you how, step-by-step, to create lean products and services right from the start. He reveals success secrets and a road map for integrating lean design with six sigma design for powerful results.
Customer Reviews:
Recommended Lean Product Development Book .......2006-08-04
There aren't many books to help engineers apply lean in their product development efforts. There is no question Huthwaite's principles are right on, but then they aren't a pure lean Toyota play. I only wish his book was structured and edited to take some of the redundancy and folksiness out. Stating his principles with more brevity and clarity would shorten the book and make it a more powerful read--making it easier for an engineering group to pick up and apply. To Huthwaite's credit, there are principles here, that you won't find in any other lean Product Development(PD) book--he draws from his 22+ years of knowledge and client experience. That has value. Other great PD books includes Morgan & Liker's The Toyota Product Development System, Reinertsen's The Development Factory and Poppendieck's Lean Software Development.
Lean Design Solution Delivers What it Promises.......2005-03-21
The "Lean Design Solution" is an easy to read book which guides you through the world of lean design. The text is richly layered with practical examples and real life situations. The author goes to great lengths to engage the reader and keep the subject matter interesting. This book is a must have resource for people working in design or manufacturing.
A Comprehensive Guidebook in Implementing Lean Principles.......2005-03-20
"The Lean Design Solution" provides an extremely effective methodolgy in applying Lean Principles to product design and development. The book provides a holistic approach involving an integration of all stakeholders in the implementing the design process. This "Lean Design Solution" methodology of imbedding customer needs up front in the process has developed a very successful track record of delivering maximum effectiveness in design, as well as process and systems development. A significant hallmark of the book, is that the methodology and accompanying tools can be overlaid or incorporated throughout the enterprise's current Lean system to fully optimize and bring innovative, high quality products to market rapidly. The process is very effective as captured in the "Lean Design Solution" for all maturity levels of organization's Lean processes. The practical approach provided with the Lean Design Solution makes it a great read for all Lean practitioners as well as those who are in change agents in implementing Lean.
A Solution That Works.......2005-03-19
Lean Design Solution is in itself a masterpiece in simplicity. You are walked through the basics of great innovative design in a step-by-step process. In over 25 years in the aviation industry I have never seen a book that does this so well.
You wont find any "fuzzy" abstractions in the book. The author provides an easy-to-understand, common sense techniques and, most importantly, useful tools that a project team can implement immediately.
Mr. Huthwaite's vast experience as a coach of design teams clearly comes through. This book is "hands-on" in every sense fo the words.
I beleive this is a must read for project leaders and team members alike.
Very instructional.......2005-03-19
The Lean Design Solution not only gives great insight into the the theory of lean design, but also gives direct and simple instruction on the "how to" practice lean design. The solutions and tools mentioned in the book combine well with existing lean design and lean manufacturing strategies. I found that the book was very easy to read and contained a lot of real life examples.

Book Description
"A thoughtful, complete, and very readable approach to robust engineering. It presents insights that correlate with those learned at Ford while developing and executing Design for Six Sigma. Having this book three years ago could’ve helped with that effort."–David Amos, DFSS Deployment Director, Ford Motor Company
Written by Anna C. Thornton, the well-known author who coined the phrase "variation risk management," this comprehensive book presents new methods and implementation strategies based on her research of industry practices and her personal experience with such companies as The Boeing Company, Eastman Kodak Company, Ford Motor Company, Johnson & Johnson, and many others. Step-by-step guidelines show how you can implement and apply variation risk management to real-world problems within the existing systems of an organization.
Customer Reviews:
A good effort to give a framework to deal with variation.......2005-03-13
The book is benefited from a rich research background of the author, who is a reasearcher in MIT,in the quality management field and refelects her experiences of doing research in dealing with variation problems in the product development of some leading world manufacturers. The book is unique in comparison to other books in the area of design for quality in the respect that it proposes a well integrated framework for managing risks associated with sources of variation in product development. This framework gives a very good structure to the book and in each chapter explains elements of this framework in detail. The book is very good in totality and the concreteness of the proposed framework but do not discuss the introduced tools in enough details. Specially in the variation mitigation part of the framework, which I think is the most important part, the reader is left without deatailed enough tools to utilize in real world problem cases. However the book is very rich in the sectiones for indentifying sources of variation and the Key Charactristics are very well explained and integrated in the framwork.
