Within the space of a thousand years, Roman society transformed itself from an insignificant tribe on the Italian mainland struggling for territorial supremacy, to one of the most accomplished civilisations of the ancient world, whose Empire extended over the greater part of Western Europe, the Mediterranean and northern Africa. This transformation was not a chance event. It was a direct result of the Roman genius for government and the law. Through a relentless campaign of "empire building", Roman armies conquered and subjugated vast territories. Unlike other conquerors of the ancient world, however, the Romans were keenly aware that their dominance of these regions could only be maintained through a process of "Romanization" that included the installation of an effective bureaucracy utilising a flexible system of law. Although the Roman Empire was destined to disintegrate over time, its legal system left an indelible imprint on Western Europe. Roman law, as rediscovered by the Italian Glossators in the eleventh century, provided the conceptual foundation of many modern legal systems, and continues to provide an invaluable introduction to paradigms of legal thought and the study of legal concepts. Above all, Roman law is richly rewarding to study for its own sake, as a remarkable feat of organized good sense and structured orderliness. The book provides students with a lucid and readable exposition of Roman civil law and procedure. To make the subject more accessible, the author sets the law in the context of the history of Rome and keeps the use of Latin phrases to a minimum. A major feature of the book is the use of texts (in translation) from the most important sources of Roman law. The texts serve to illustrate the law and to make it more vivid for the reader. This third edition has been fully updated to reflect recent developments in Romanist scholarship. References to key articles and books have been incorporated into the text and further reading sections included at the end of each chapter. Corrective to rationalist bias in constitutional politics.......1998-03-27
Fustel marshalls historical evidence to show that in the classical city-state social organisation based on religion -- for example, the patrician order, family graves, the sacred fire, the god Terminus who demarcated property, shared ceremonial meals, etc. -- came before social organisation based on law. The Ancient City should be read as a corrective to the excessively rationalist bias in constitutional thinking which we inherit from the 18th century. Sadly, this important and rewarding book did not appear until one hundred years after the US Constitution was adopted.

I met Nick Irons and his mom, Connie, two and a half years ago in Chicago at an awards celebration after his book won an award. Having finally read Swim Lessons, I realize what extraordinary things we can accomplish if our reason WHY is strong enough. Oftentimes, a person presents a challenging idea, and people emphasize the impossibilities. Nick's WHY was strong, his father has Multiple Sclerosis and Nick wanted to raise awareness of and funds for MS research to find a cure. The HOW fell into place with the entire Irons family and volunteer crew members stepping forward along the way. If swimming 1550 miles down the Mississippi was not enough, Nick fulfilled another extraordinary feat--a 10,000 mile bike-ride around the United States. Nick, I hope you are writing another book about this journey. A worthy read and an inspirational holiday gift whether or not you are touched by MS.

This book and Nick's actions give me so much hope because he reminds me of someone I can relate to. It seems really possible to go for the dream and make it come true. I love Tony Robbin's messages (his book mentions he has T.R. books in his room too) but I think I get a bigger push from Nick because he reminds me of myself and my friends . . . somehow he makes fulfilling the dream more real, more credible.
P.S. This book got me off my tail to start making MY dream become reality!
Inspiration in a time we all need it!.......2003-11-21
This book is a fast read (i.e., it is so good you don't want to put it down) and inspires us all to make the most of our time and encourages us to go for our dreams no matter how far reaching or hard they may seem. Nick has a great way of breaking his dream down into components, but at the same time always keeping his eye on the ball and keep the end goal in mind at all times.
Lessons to Learn.......2003-08-14
Swim Lessons, by Nick Irons is one of the most motivating books I've read in a long time. His fast read about his 1,550 mile swim of the Mississippi River was rejuvanating and inspirational! His easy steps to make any dream succeed are easy to use in daily life sitiuations like the work place, home life, and personal goals. Adventure, struggles, and amazing accomplishments help keep you glued to every word. His message is awarness about MS and I can't wait to help. I LOVED IT! Great job Nick!

misguided revision.......2007-01-20
I bet the original is interesting and maybe fun to cook from. The revised edition tries to celebrate the history of the original while providing practical updates, but the result is an unsatisfying compromise that is a little like the overcooked vegetables it suggests you make -- bland, flavorless and not all that practical. Did I overextend that simile? Whatever, if you like your food history spliced with depressing 90s-era diet tips and microwave cookery, buy this book. Otherwise, uh, don't.

if you have to buy only 3 cookbooks this should be one of them. Need I say More. My own copy fell apart (1945 edition) was passed down to my. Now I want a replacement.
Best all around cookbook EVER.......2002-12-05
This was my first cookbook forty years ago...it is now frayed, cover gone, corners dog-eared, but the "meat" of the book still in tact. WE STILL USE IT! Now my daughter is 20 and out on her own...so what better gift than her own personal copy! I keep telling her anyone can cook a good meal from this book...it even tells you how to boil water, make coffee. It walks you through making sandwiches to serving a gormet meal. How many cookbooks can bost of that?!!!

This is a fabulous cookbook! I have made many of the recipes and they always come out as they are supposed to come out. Very yummy, and what I like best is that it goes way back and has ties to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the United States. (Although it is not a kosher book).
A disappointment-.......1999-10-20
I still refer to my original settlement cookbook. I don't like the way the new book is organized. I don't feel as if it is a quick reference guide which I was hoping because that is how I use my first version. Menus aren't simple and don't help me as a working mom.

The Settlement Cook Book Treasured Recipes of Seven Decades.......2001-07-30
This is a great cook book!! It has everything for the beginner to the experienced cook. It has old recipes, canning recipes, canning time tables, tables of measurement even planning for dinner parties. My copy was printed in 1976 and I would not trade it for anything. I have been cooking for 30 years and every cook book I have purchased does not come close to this one.

I have used this cookbook and worn the hard cover right off of it. As a resource book it is invalueable, it always has what's missing in other cookbooks such as substitutions, measurements,herb charts, cooking times and on and on. I have gone from meat-eater to vegetarian and this is still my favorite cook book. I am always being asked for the recipes I use from it. I would be lost without it.
Turn of the century kitchen wisdom in todays food processor........1997-10-08
This is not only good eating, but also good reading. Excellent blend of hardy, robust, old-fashioned dishes and simple receipes for todays demanding lifestyles. Receipies are cross indexed thoroughly. Catagories also cover freezing, canning, pickling, and health concerns.
You may never need to make a bar of soap, or pasteurize milk in your own kitchen, but you will gain an appreciation of todays modern conveniences.
To me, this book has reminiscent as well as nutritional value. You see...this is how I remember Grand-ma cooking. Can't you smell...snf,..snf...the fresh baked bread and potato soup cookin' on the old wood stove. Um..Um..!

The New Settlement Cook Book.......2007-01-15
I have been using this cook book for 45 years. My mother bought it for me when I married. Her book was a previous printing and even told the new cook how to kill the chicken before cleaning and cooking it. My three daughters now use it in their homes. It has wonderful recipes that are plain, good cooking. It is the cook book I reach for first.

Excellent "basic" cookbook.......1998-10-26
I received this book as a gift about 15 years ago & it is by far my most often used. It was originally copyrighted in 1901 & has been revised many times, however many of the recipes still appear as they did then. Recipes range from the very simple (scrambled eggs or grilled cheese sandwiches) to exotic (Fondue Bourguignonne). It will take you from breakfast to an after dinner cordial - all from scratch. Recipes are easy to follow. Basic equivalents (i.e.2.20 pounds = 1 kilo) & substitutions make converting any recipe easy. And it contains much more than just recipes. There are menu planning ideas, freezing, canning & dehydrating charts, special diet recipes, & even a stain removal guide! This is a great book for the beginning cook or someone that needs a bit of everything all in one place.

That quaint saying is the keynote of this book from the turn of the century. It is truly the best basic cook book ever produced. From mayonaisse to dressing fresh kill, starting a fire in a stove to making cordials and candies from your berry crop, the quintessential Cook's book will provide you with a culinary education from the days before microwaves and even Barbie's dream kitchen. The food here is not haute cuisine but good honest food that can feed a family wholesome and hearty meals on a budget and teach you how to make it from scratch. It is a must have investment for anyone trying to live on a budget.
If you can get this book -- Buy this book.

WOW! This is the best cookbook I have ever used! I have almost wore it out! The best pancake recipe is in this book! My family loves the waffle recipe! My Grandma gave my mom this cookbook, my mom gave me a copy of the cookbook & I hope to pass on the tradition to my girls.

This is the best German/American cookbook ever. It is a pity the recent revised edition does not measure up, as it lack many of the basic recipes here. I could not live without a copy. I have two, one in my upstate New York residence (given to me by my mother 58 years ago when I was in college) and one here in my Florida winter home (given to me by my son-in-law just a few years ago when I complained that my copy was falling apart from overuse). Has the BEST recipe for Sauerbraten ever (yes, the gravy is thickened with gingersnaps), and all the kuchen and pastry items that made my mother's and grandmother's kitchens redolent. If you can find a copy give it to your lover or whoever cooks for you, or just keep it for youself as I do. Other cookbooks may be useful, but this one is essential, and the recipes are simple and foolproof.

I used this cookbook as a child, when I cooked with my Mother and my Grandmother in the 1950s and 60s. It is a wonderful piece of American History, with recipes for things you might never have thought about. I reccomend this book to anyone who experiences the 'joy of cooking' and has a desire to keep American History alive and a part of the new century. A reprint or an edition from a used bookstore would be a treasured possession for any cook, a valuable gift.
