Saint Francis most spoke and lived, based on the Gospel mandates, in intimate connection with Nature and with the poor. Through close and systematic reflection on his Franciscan spirituality, this holy and internationally influential Franciscan Friar, Father Leonardo Boff, here draws these threads together, teaching us how the suffering of the earth is also the suffering of the poor and the suffering of each one of us.

Through hearing the earth cry we are liberated to a new appreciation of our Faith, and of our call to action, in this case on behalf of the poor and the indigeous people who are further dispossessed through the destruction of the Amazonian environment.

In fact, near the end of his exhortation The Sacrament of Charity: Sacramentum Caritatis, Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI cries out for us to follow our Euicharistic compulsion to alter those economic structures which leave the poor dispossessed and the cosmic Creation destroyed.

This excellent ecological, economic and theological treatise first found publication by the great Catholic printing house Orbis Books in its Ecology and Justice Series ten years ago and now achieves its tenth printing. This indicates that the total number of volumes published by now reaches the six digits. Those volumes then fill seminary libraries, parish libraries, personal libraries and are resold through services such as amazon, bringing the total number of readers to a whole new magnitude. How many works of modern theology reach and inspire so many voluntary and eager readers?

The principles and applications developed here by the great Catholic Theologian Leonardo Boff do not age but only grow more urgent. Perhaps this book is best received within a Catholic college with a professor capable of guiding students to comprehension and action; alone the reader armed with only prior paradigms may grow as lost as I would in the former Brazilian rain forest.

Nevertheless this caveat should not discourage anyone from purchasing and studying very carefully this excellent and systematic study presented with Father Boff's consistent academic and compassionate style, speaking fomr both the large heart and keen intellect which God and the finest scholastic theological training gave him.

Please see the vast body of Father Boff's work, including recently his beautiful meditations on our basic prayers: Praying With Jesus And Mary: Our Father, Hail Mary and Lord Is My Shepherd: Divine Consolation in Times of Abandonment.

But please do not forget this profound and systematic work as well, now so readily available here upon the amazon. In fact it is most meaningful to purchase such a work which treats of the devastation of the Amazon basin here upon this very source!

I liked "In Search of Excellence" but thought the concepts (& certainly companies) didn't stand the test of time. I read "Liberation Management" with some trepidation.

My initial reaction on this book was, "Tom's gone off the deep end, he's doing this just to be provocative" - that's a good enough reason to read this book, but I wouldn't have rated it well just based on that.

If you look at today's business environment, he really wasn't a radical. Ideas that he plugged (Turn all work into a project, outsource, turn everything into a profit center) don't really seem so crazy. His mantra of speed certainly fit the period we just went through. His companies (example: EDS) even did better than prior books.

I've read all of Tom's books - if you want one to guide how you manage and lead, this one is it...

Well before its time........2000-04-16

A fantastic book with mind-blowing detail and scope. Introduces (and complements with research!) many of the important 'management' topics that have gained popularity in the last few years. Which is impressive considering the book was written 8 years ago!

Topics include: Network Organisations and other non-hierarchy-based organizational models, Networked Markets, Knowledge Management, reduced 'mass'-marketing, etc, etc, etc...

It's impressive that he has been able to capture many of these trends BEFORE the proliferation of the World Wide Web.

Also preempts some of his own more recent movements, like the plain-English movement and the Wow! Project movement that advocate categorization in terms of 'wow!' and 'yuck' projects.

His latest '50List' books are much more digestible and prescriptive - if that is what you prefer.

In search of curious behavior.......2000-02-06

Tom Peters tells us that he can boil his entire management philosophy down to one sentence: "Crazy times call for crazy organizations."

The new marketplace in one word is "fashion." Every market is becoming a fashion market. "That means: fickle, fleeting, ephemeral, faddish, and unfair." Peters says you can thrive in the marketplace if you'll:

"Free the human imagination . . . Get close to and serve the customer. . . Customize products and services . . . Abandon everything; continuously reinvent yourself.. .Access the brainware around you. . . Know the front line . . . Demolish the monolith. . . Create teams that allow people to express their personalities."

Peters says a corporation today must be "curious." Don't expect the personnel in the personnel department to hire curious people. Peters says HR people operate by this unwritten rule:

"Thou shalt not hire a person who has an unexplained nanosecond in their life past the age of three."

They want the person who maintained a 4.0 grade average through graduate school and "has not had an interesting thought in their entire life."

They don't want any people who drop out of college, spend a year and a half in Europe, and offer no explanation. That, says Peters, is just the kind of behavior to look for when you're ready to hire curious people. He adds: "Hire a few genuine off-the-wall types. Collect weirdoes."

Peters says he is totally serious about this: "This is coldly logical stuff." Nobody disagrees that markets are weird, "but how are you going to conquer weird markets with stuffed shirts?"

This is a stimulating and broad ranging discussion of developing trends in business and organization, focusing on the rate and nature of change and the evolving nature of markets and technology world-wide, liberating people from the constraints of traditional industrial organizational structure. As the writings of Tom Peters have moved away from the structured management style of "In Search of Excellence" to the disorienting postmod style of "Liberation Management" and "The Pursuit of WOW!", many of the conventional business book reviewers are baffled. Some have even hinted that Tom Peters has gone crazy. Quite the contrary, I find the more recent work -- particularly Liberation Management -- exhilarating reading, very much in tune with the fragmented, hyperreal conditions of today. In particular, I have found the various case studies and examples in Liberation Management very useful in may work as a strategy consultant, researcher, and professor

Not for foragers.......2006-01-30

If you want a few fancy recipes, or are new to sea greens, then this is the book for you. The author is very experienced at using sea veggies to spice up a meal. However, except for a couple of salads, I did not see a recipe where sea veggies were the main ingredient. If you want to forage your own then don't get this book. Not only does the book not tell you how to pick them, it discourages you from doing so.

Worth a try.......2004-10-02

Sea vegetables are an acquired taste. Knowing that most people are not familiar with sea vegetables as food, the author explains what those algae are, how and where they grow, and which ones are edible. She then discusses the nutritional value and provides a misleading chart of nutrients. She claims that some sea vegetables contain 10 times as much calcium as cow's milk, but she compares the values of dried algae to the values of drinkable milk. If she compared edible servings (non-fat milk and rehydrated algae, or non-fat dry milk and dried algae), she would find that milk and wakame (one of the algae highest in calcium) have about the same amount of calcium per serving. Most other algae have lower values.

Gusman then goes on to discuss the healing values of algae and claims that they help our bodies fight disease that results form a polluted environment. She does not address the issue of ocean pollution and the fact that algae absorb and therefore contain pollutants, which may or may not be absorbed into our bodies - nobody wants to elaborate on this issue.

Her chapter about the individual algae, however, is great. The author describes the algae, shows photographs of the dried products, and tells us how to use them in the kitchen.

The major part of the book is dedicated to recipes, many with photographs and additional information about the algae. Some of the recipes have an algae-stranded-on-the-beach flavor. Moreover, when I followed the advice of a Japanese friend to soak, drain and then sauté Hijiki and Arame in olive oil for three minutes before adding any liquid, and to always add a teaspoon each of sugar and rice vinegar, some of Gusman's recipes became more palatable.

I also tried her Nori Condiment, which turned my stomach when I read the recipe, but which tasted surprisingly good in the end. The recipe collection includes soups, salads, snacks, main dishes, vegetables and sweets. Some of them, like the condiments, can be made in a few minutes, others take more time. Some of them are pretty good, others are better without the addition of the seaweed (e.g. curried sweet potato soup does not benefit from the wakame). But overall, I think this is an interesting cookbook worth considering.

I bought several copies of this book as gifts for friends, 3 of whom are physicians interested in sea vegetables and easy, new recipes that are beautiful too! Well researched, beautifully photographed; unique and first class...I use the book for cooking at home and the kids can enjoy nutritious results too. Highly recommend the book! Jack M.
