Book Description
Adjudication has been the main means of settling construction disputes since it was first introduced by the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, and a substantial body of case law has now built up.This book established itself as the key authority on adjudication when it was first published. It has now been revised to reflect the authors' experience of adjudication in practice and to cover the large number of court decisions. It features useful appendices on adjudication materials.
Book Description
In this book the author examines the problems encountered in negotiations among claimants and the political and economic considerations that influence property rights arrangements. The histories of mineral rights, rights to range and timber land, and fishery and crude oil production rights in the United States are examined and reveal a surprising variety of contractual negotiations and economic outcomes. The author concludes that in addition to an analysis of distributional outcomes, an examination of the details of the political bargaining underlying property rights contracts is essential to an understanding of why rights emerge as they do. The book is an important contribution to both property rights theory and to American economic history.

From the supplier: Outsourcing, or contracting out government services, is sometimes a more efficient and effective privatization technique than outright liquidation or the sale of assets. Macro-contracting, or outsourcing an entire public sector activity, such as education, works best for functions not considered inherently governmental. Even defense, police and other fundamental state functions may benefit from micro-contracting in which specific activities, such as vehicle maintenance, are outsourced. The private sector is not always more efficient and less costly, so outsourcing should be considered case by case.

Book Description
Although cross-border industrial sub-contracting is the main tool of industrial organisation in the global economy, practitioners in this important field are significantly hampered by a lack of uniform rules. This book offers a first step in discerning and formulating a framework for such rules, based on the experience of counsel for both contractors and sub-contractors in over twenty countries worldwide. It consists of the final papers, subsequently revised by the presenters, delivered at a conference held in Florence, in February 2000, under the auspices of the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA) and the Association Internationale des Jeunes Avocats (AIJA).
The authors cover a wide range of perspectives and issues that affect the negotiation and drafting of a sound cross-border industrial sub-contracting agreement, including the following:
+ Competition law;
+ Quality control;
+ Product liability;
+ Payment clauses;
+ Security and guarantees;
+ Industrial and intellectual property;
+ Labour law;
+ Insolvency law;
+ Customs law;
+ International taxation; and
+ International dispute resolution.
Other essays present the basic legal issues from a comparative perspective and clarify the fundamental distinctions in the points of view of the contractor and the sub-contractor. Individual contributions from practitioners in twenty countries (encompassing EU countries, the United States, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Asia--Pacific region) detail applicable domestic laws so that the user can determine points of difference, common aspects, and potential pitfalls in most of the world's major industrial sub-contracting jurisdictions. Handbook on Cross-Border Industrial Sub-Contracting will be of great value to lawyers and business people everywhere engaged in this all-important area of today's legal practice.

Book Description
The approach offered in this book is to review some of the key contract issues unique to various types of contracting, such as sale of goods, licensing, intellectual property transfer, and the hiring of foreign agents and representatives. This work also attempts to analyze contract clauses and principles common to most international contracting scenarios. A number of contract clauses, such as the choice of law and the dispute resolution clauses, have become universally accepted. Along these same lines, the principles of good contract drafting are applicable to all types of international contracting. Thus, this is a book in fundamentals and not for one practicing in a narrow, highly specialized area of international business law; it is intended for the generalist, both legal and non-legal. It is for anyone interested in some of the more common legal aspects of international business contracting.

Book Description
In a time of increasing privatization of public services, can we ensure that profit doesn't outweigh the public good?
Nowadays for-profit companies manage everything from education to criminal justice. It's a fact of life that private commercial interests are here to stay. In school, students watch Channel One, a broadcast of news features and commercials geared to a young audience, and are served fast food from Taco Bell and Pizza Hut in their cafeterias. Privately managed prisons balance profits against the costs of rehabilitating and educating inmates. For-profit hospitals treat patients but also seek to maximize returns for their shareholders. What happens when public and private interests come into conflict?
As always, renowned legal scholar Martha Minow ("a human dynamo," says Stanford Law School Dean Kathleen Sullivan) sheds light on this complicated picture. She argues that these new arrangements aren't necessarily bad—market forces can be used to improve public services—but the partnership must be structured correctly. Certain public values must be preserved, including antidiscrimination and respect for individual autonomy and choice.
Praise for Between Vengeance and Forgiveness:
"Imaginative, compassionate, and compelling, Martha Minow's Between Vengeance and Forgiveness is a tour de force."
—Eric K. Yamamoto, University of Hawaii
"In an area of wrenching human and difficult intellectual dimensions, Martha Minow has written an extraordinarily perceptive, sensitive-
and moving-book."
—Abram Chayes, author of Preventing Conflict in the Post-Communist World
Customer Reviews:
Accessible, Informative,Timely and Worth Reading.......2003-03-05
I enjoyed reading this book because it is both accessible and sophisticated. In a discourse too often characterized by polemics and sound-bites, Minow offers a thoughtful view of the trend toward privatization. Reading her book helped me see how complex these issues are, and gave me new insight into arguments I might otherwise have dismissed. I found it a rare treat.
Save Your Money.......2002-12-29
Save your money. Not only does this book not offer any possible solutions, it doesn't even provide a comprehensive analysis of the problem. It is heavily documented with endnotes (which is good) but the multitude of studies, op-ed pieces and surveys are never really brought into the text and explained. Instead, the book reads as if Ms. Minow summarized each source into a single sentence and then haphazardly strung the sentences together.
The reader is bombarded with constant repetition. Given the subject matter, repetition might not be a bad thing, but here it seems to result more from disorganization than an attempt to clarify important points. Indeed, the reader is left with the impression that the constant citations are meant to make up for the fact that the book reads as if it were dashed off in a series of odd moments stolen from more important duties.
Ms. Minow may be granted some latitude because she is a lawyer and brevity adorned with citation is bread and butter to the bar, but she is not writing for lawyers here and I would suspect that even lawyers would find her polemics redundant and unenlightening. I was eager to read this book, hoping to gain greater insight into the issue of privatization. I was sorely disappointed.
A Terrific Map of Our Changing Democracy and What it Means.......2002-10-21
Martha Minow's book is a tremendously valuable, engaging guide to thinking about the respective roles of the public and private sector in promoting our common good. With great insight and fair-mindedness, Minow identifies the promises and problems of the shifting roles of the public and private sector in many areas of our lives; schooling, welfare, legal services and health services. I think how we allocate public and private responsibility will have a huge impact on the future of our democracy. There are, as Minow points out, advantages in creating more private responsibility in education, for example. But these pros need to be weighed very carefully against the disturbing prospect of abandoning our commitment to public, integrated schools. As she has in her other books, Minow brings great wisdom to this vital topic.

Insightful and incisive.......2002-09-24
Minow ably blends law, policy, and issues of essential fairness in this thoughtful book about some of the most complex issues families and communities are facing. With infinite respect for all sides, she ably cuts through myths and fears to present a thoughtful template for getting the best from both public and private sources. Elegantly reasoned and beautifully written, this book speaks to the mind and the heart and makes an important contribution to a debate that has been too often characterized by more heat than light.
Customer Reviews:
You will want to read the entire book!.......1999-01-27
Very insightful toward the elements of the mind that allow one to continue on their familiar path, over and over again, like the eveready bunny! The path that gets you where you have always been. This book does a fine job in communicating breakthrough technology that can allow real change in our abilty to set goals and not repeat the familiar. By understanding past events one can see where there habits and decisions have come from and then, hopefully move on to a higher level. Great book for sales people and people looking for a way to access their next challenge!
This self-help book delivers!.......1998-12-25
Started listening to the audio version of THE INTERNAL FRONTIER each morning on my way into work. Boy, did it make a difference in my day! It really made me take a look at myself and it helped me to see that some of the stuff I do really gets in my own way. At the same time, though, the author gives hope and help to make a change so I don't have to keep doing the "same-old-same-old". 1999 is going to be a better year, thanks to this book!
Eye opening, incisive, and substantial.......1998-12-15
For those who are truly motivated to pursue their dreams, whether personal or professional, this book is essential. Shechtman's premise is that we all have underlying emotional patterns - our "familiar," as he refers to it - that keep us stuck. To get un-stuck, he offers a six-step process for creating new "familiars" which are in line with our goals. He also stresses the importance of creating accountability groups to help us follow through with our actions steps. I have taken a number of positive - and uncomfortable - action steps as a direct result of the book. Very well written. Full of "beef."
Impactful-this book is capable of changing your life!!!!!.......1998-12-09
Morrie Shechtman is a futurist who focuses on how information and change impact individual performance. Peak performance, personally, professionally, and financially, is achieved by understanding who you are, and why you are the way you are. Shechtman examines how self-information and an internal focus removes the barriers to tremendous personal achievment. Shechtman's material is hard-hitting ,and forces the reader to examine his or her own "internal frontier." Shechtman's first book,Working without a Net,discussed living and working in a high risk culture and economy. The Internal Frontier looks at what you know (your "familiar") and examines how your decision making is affected by your natural inclination to gravitate to the your familiar. The book is filled with useful information with which to make substantial changes in how you see yourself and make your decisions. The book uses numerous real life examples to illustrate how people have achieved great success by understanding their "familiar" and breaking the patterns which have kept them from achieving their full potential.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent cookbook.......2005-01-19
This is one of the best cookbooks I own. Although I've owned it for over 10 years, I still use it constantly. The recipes are tasty and generally quick. I particularly love the emphasis on fresh food. The game plans make it easy to put it together quickly, and several of the meals are elegant enough to serve to company. I cook for several families, and a number of these meal plans are perennial favorites.
15 years and I still depend on this cookbook!.......2004-07-24
There I was, 30 years old and able to make only one pasta dish and one chicken dish. My friends kindly fed me (well and often) but I could never invite them back. Then I moved to an apartment next to a newly-wed couple and they recommended *20-minute Menus*. "We can't cook either" they said, "but we can follow directions!" Yes indeed. Marian takes you step by step through entire dinners (not just one dish, but 2 or 3 dishes together, the whole meal) telling you when to start heating the broiler, when to blend the ingredients for the sauce, when to start steaming the vegetables... She even breaks down the ingredients into things you should have in your "pantry" (there is a pantry list at the beginning of the book) and things you need to get fresh for this recipe. I actually used that pantry list to stock my kitchen when I bought a second home. Usually the menus take closer to 1/2 hour to prepare (sometimes more) if you include chopping time, but the stress is low and the results are great.
In every way this book changed my life. I was suddenly able to make GOOD FOOD for my friends. I started having people over for dinner regularly. I soon branched out to... Marian Burros' 30-minute menus (*Eating Well is the Best Revenge*) and other cookbooks. But when I want a meal that is complex and tasty in the eating, yet swift and simple in the making, I come back to 20-minute menus. I've probably made 60% of the different menus and only once have I not liked the results (there was also one bad recipe in *Eating Well*). I have 2 kids now and this is the cookbook I use for regular nightly dinners. We all love it!!
Whether you're a seasoned cook looking for some easy and interesting menus, or a total beginner with aspirations to cook sophisticated food, this is the cookbook for you.
Horrible. Really horrible........2004-06-21
I tried two menus. Of the three recipes comprising these menus, one was inedible (I threw it away after one bite), one was barely okay (I ate it but threw away the leftovers), and one was just okay (I ate it, but I won't make it again). Also, the recipes are badly written--sometimes ingredients in the ingredient list are left out of the instructions. This is the worst cookbook I've ever used.
The book that saved our marriage. I'm not joking........2003-07-30
Before we bought this book, I knew five recipies. When it was my turn to cook dinner, my wife got to choose between pancakes, tacos, spaghetti, hot dogs, and a lousy stirfry. This was a source of no small amount of tension in our household, as she wanted a little more variety and taste in our diet, and I was uninterested in spending more time on cooking, and unsure of myself when it came to learning new recipies.
This cookbook was a compromise for us -- a way to hopefully add more variety while not scaring me off, and not taking forever to cook. It worked brilliantly. We have discovered 25-30 recipies in it that we absolutely love, and that I find easy to cook. The shopping lists and the instructions are easy to follow and make the cooking pretty painless. My one caveat is that I am a slooooow chef, so most of these take me 30-45 minutes to cook, but that may just be me.
GREAT book - SUPER recipes.......2001-08-28
I LOVE this book! This is the first cookbook I've seen that goes through the whole meal from main dish to side dish to dessert and even gives you the game plan on what to do first so all is ready at the SAME TIME! Imagine that? Coupled with the book Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents, it's all you need to feed your family healthy and even more important TASTY homecooked meals everyday! I definately recommend this one! Great as a gift for anyone with kids or who just don't like hanging out in the kitchen cooking all day!
