Book Description

Second Edition -"Family Trusts contains pioneering work and advice that Grantors of Trusts should consider. Its bonus value is the Trust documents available free on the publisher's web site. Step by step instructions are given for avoiding the high legal costs and delays of Probate by use of these free Living Trusts for Married or for Single Persons. These forms provide the protection every one wants and should have for the surviving spouse, children and other heirs.

If you own a home or have other assets, you need to consider a Living Trust. If you currently have a Living Trust, you owe it to your family and heirs to compare the boilerplate provisions and generalities in your document with those given at our web site and in our book. Both recommend specific provisions that clearly express the intent of the Grantor.

Most existing Trusts do not provide an adequate income for your surviving spouse; nor do they properly provide for your children and other heirs. You need a Trust that does these things. Several examples of your rights to provide a Planned Income Trust for your spouse are given are given in Part Two. Options to be considered in a second marriage Trust are discussed in Chapter 27.

Are you aware that many states require your Trustee to annually file and pay a special tax on your Trust? You can avoid this by including an important provision shown in Chapter 24.It allows you or your heirs to change the state that controls your trust and avoid these annual taxes on your estate. Does your Living Trust contain this provision?

As a son or daughter, you can help your parent use our Living Trust. The easy to understand explanations in the book show how to include important provisions that should be part of every effective estate planning document. These key options are unique to this book. You will not find them in the forms or in the text of other books on this subject.

The author of "Family Trusts" has been teaching these provisions to attorneys in state approved Continuing Legal Education courses for over 12 years. Take advantage of the expertise he offers by reading the book and using the web site.

You can then download the free Living Trust, insert your name and the names of your family and other beneficiaries, include the options from the book that you want, and then sign the document.

If you want to buy a book on living trusts, stick with the Apts book.

4 out of 5 stars Best That I have found........2001-08-28

I have read both of Mr. Croke's books and I have found them to be both informative and helpful. In fact, I have given them to most of the senior executives in my company. In virtually every case, they have found data in these books which have led them to meet with their trust advisors and to revise their trusts. My own trust advisor, rated as the best in our area, has reviewed Mr. Croke's books and believes them to be a very helpful addition to the current bibliography. I have also read the review by your customer from Tucson and I have a difficult time understanding his crankiness.

4 out of 5 stars A quick read with useful information.......2001-08-16

I picked up this book knowing very little about trusts. Its a US book, and I needed to find out about UK tax. So there needs to be a UK edition. Nevertheless it proved very useful in raising potential red flags. It also has white space at the back where I made copious notes and reminders for my family and financial advisor. The book raises lots of questions to ask family members.

5 out of 5 stars Proper planning is key.......2000-09-19

It appears that the Winston-Salem attorney (below) may have jumped the gun. Although he has not read the book, I'm not sure why he feels it's his duty to attack the author's credentials. I think the book is professionally written and is a helpful guide for readers who want to think and plan out the needs of their family and communicate those needs to their attorney. Proper planning is a key part of any family trust.

The allegation that the authors lack the proper credentials on the subject matter seems to be without merit. While a "Lexis-Nexis" search is the best way to obtain legal citations, it is not an exhaustive search of business articles, financial filings and can miss information from supplemental "special report" sections of paid journals. Perhaps the reviewer was too busy to refer to his own subscriptions of The Wall Street Journal or Kiplinger's Retirement Report.

Mr. Croke (the author) was cited in both of those journals earlier this year. The April, 2000 issue of Kiplinger's Retirement Report talks positively about his work and his book in a page and a half article and he is quoted several times in the March 7th, 2000 edition of The Wall Street Journal under an article called "Tangled Trusts".

1 out of 5 stars Highly skeptical.......2000-09-13

I am highly skeptical of this author's credentials. I read an interview with him published in the 9/3/2000 edition of the Wilmington (NC) Star-News. In an effort to bolster his credentials, he claims to have graduated from the Harvard Business School. In an effort to verify, I asked a friend who is a Harvard grad to check his alumni directory. Mr. Croke was not listed as a graduate. That doen't mean he didn't, if I'm mistaken...sorry...I'm only reporting what I was told.

Furthermore, Mr. Croke stated that he is an associate member of the American Bar Association. This may very well be true and sounds impressive until you realize that ANYONE, including my cat, can become an associate member of the ABA for $112. What really blew Mr. Croke's credibility in my mind was the statement that he made that his book had been cited in both the "Wall Street Journal" and "Kiplinger's Retirement Magazine." In my effort to verify this I logged on to Lexis-Nexis and did a search going back 10 years. I found no reference to Mr. Croke or his book by either publication. However, giving him the benefit of the doubt, if he bought an ad in either publication that info would not show up on a Lexis search.

Lastly, I will give credit where I believe it is due. I tried to check the credentials of William F. Croke, Attorney at Law, who is listed as a co-author. Martindale Hubbell, the nationwide directory of licensed attorneys, does have a William F. Croke listed as practicing in Denver, CO, a graduate of Notre Dame Law School, admitted to practice in Colorado in 1990.

Final word - there are lots of these books on the market. Exercise an abundance of caution. There is no substitute for quality legal advice from your own attorney.

4 out of 5 stars One of several helpful books from The Princeton Review.......2006-06-04

I am about to embark on my second college application search for my kids, this time with my daughter who will start her junior HS year in August. We will make our first college campus visits in a few weeks. The Princeton Review issues a number of books on the topic, and this book caught my eye recently.

"America's Best Value Colleges 2007" (531 pages) aims to provide an overview of the 150 colleges in America that provide "best value", as defined by The Princeton Review, i.e. a combination of academic rating, finacial aid rating and "tuition GPA". I will tell you that from my own perspective I found the choices to be somewhat bewildering, albeit informative. Being in Ohio, which has a wealth of both public and private schools, I hard a hard time accepting that only 2 Ohio schools (Denison, OSU) made the cut, the same number as, say, the state of Hawaii (with all due respect to my friends there). But the information provided in the book is quite insightful.

I was about to give this book a lower rating but then I must tell you that the ultimate customer of this book, i.e. my daughter, has spent a lot of time reading through this book, which I can assure you she does not do unless she feels compelled to/is interested in doing so (and some other college books have not captured her imagination). That said, I still feel that The Princeton Review's "Best 361 Colleges" is a better book to get information about the college searching process.

Most of the 81 colleges rated "best value" had less than 2000 students and tuition/fees more than $20,000. The real focus was on how much financial aid you could receive if you qualified for need-based aid. If you are a student with great grades from a low to middle-income family looking for a small college that will give you a major aid package, buy this book.

4 out of 5 stars Read Before Your Next Negotiation.......2000-06-14

Instant Negotiator is an excellent book for anyone who is going to be involved in the negotiation process and that includes just about everybody. Frank D'Alessandro offers many negotiation techniques and strategies that lead towards a successful outcome. He believes a successful negotiation should result in a win/win in which both sides feel good about the outcome. The use of charts, symbols and stories make his five-step process easy to understand. There is an excellent chapter on negotiating strategies used to pressure you into making a deal and how to defend against them. I'm a reader who finishes less than half of the books I start. This little book held my interest from the first page to the last. There is one weakness in the book. The cover states it is "The Complete Guide to Building Wealth and Creating Happiness". It is a good book on negotiation techniques but lacks specific details on wealth building and the creation of happiness. You will feel more comfortable and confident in your next negotiation after reading this book.

                            Book Description

It is imperative that an auditor effectively guides an organization through a process of meeting ISO 9000 compliance requirements. However, real value can be added to the process if the auditor establishes a program that also focuses on overall performance relative to the objectives being met for registration. This book introduces a radical new approach that teaches the auditor how to add value, deliver business benefits and become a partner with the organization's management team.

This book offers a proven effective questioning technique, structured around key business processes and linked to the requirements of the Standard. It will guide the auditor through a system that significantly contributes to achieving the organization's objective of not only compliance but more importantly, an improved process approach that has inherent long term benefits.

With the 2000 update of ISO 9000, auditing has changed radically. With previous versions, the approach concentrated on compliance to specific and individual requirements, independently of how the system really contributed to achieving the organization's objectives. Auditors are now required to establish that the systems they are auditing have been based on these principles, one of which is the process approach.

From five fundamental questions, a series of questions is derived for several business processes that will reveal the evidence needed to demonstrate compliance with ISO 9001:2000. At the same time, the strength of the organizations processes to achieve their objectives is tested. Quality management principles are explained to show how they can be used to establish that the organization's management system is soundly based. The current auditing approaches are evaluated to show the fundamental weaknesses relative to how audits are planned, conducted and reported.

Radical new approach that focuses on performance relative to objectivesAllows auditors to focus on the real purposeProvides an effective questioning technique
