    Book Description

    Foreword by David D. Thornburg

"I would like to see this book become required reading for every teacher or administrator before they break for the summer. Its simplified descriptions make it easily understood by non-technical people. I will make sure that all of my classes read it!"
    Shirley Campbell
Director, Computer and Curriculum Inquiry Center
    University of Pittsburgh, PA

"McCain and Jukes build a case that the Information Age has not yet peaked and awaken us to the challenge of the dramatic technological changes we will surely see within our life time."
    Frank Buck, Principal, Graham School
    Talladega, AL

"Windows on the Future summarizes key developments and concepts making them readily understandable. Though I’ve been a member of the World Future Society and an avid reader of books for over 30 years, I am not aware of any other publication like this for practicing educators. This would be very valuable for professional development study groups."
Karen L. Tichy, Associate Superintendent for Instruction
    Catholic Education Office
    St. Louis, MO

How many times can I say pompous?
These authors have so inflated their egos that I can not imagine sharing a room with them. I certainly would not want to share an office or any job with them.

The authors love "technology" - and that can be a good thing.
However, they so completely mix up the means and the ends.
In teaching a well educated student is the "ends" or our product. Give me a tent and something to scrawl on and a good teacher will put out a good product: a well educated student.

Technology is a tool we can use. Just like any other tool when people see someone using it, AND it improves the job in some manner they will switch over to the new method.
The emphasis on technology is wasteful. All, yes 100%, of the information this book is devoted to can be picked up by anyone in a single semester course.

This is from a teacher who: always uses an electronic grade book, posts assignments and other information on my web page, has converted almost all of my lectures into PowerPoint presentations filled with pictures, QuickTime video shorts, links to current events in the news. My students have assignments which require internet research. Some of their assignments they can access from anywhere (on vacation in New Zealand!), at any time, with or with out partners, and can use a wide variety of resources.

My students score well on state tests, actually really well. However, with no "technology" (a tent and some chalk and slates) they will still do well.

Let's not confuse the tools with the real job, and these tools are VERY easy to learn.
If it makes sense people will do it, use it - if not - they SHOULD not.

3 out of 5 stars Good book for teachers.......2002-09-21

While I liked the book, and certainly agreed with much the authors said, I found little new (but I'm a techie, so others shouldn't be turned away from it on that account.). It's a really good book for teachers who are being inundated with technology and feeling a bit uncomfortable with that. The authors share their wisdom and experience, for our benefit.

5 out of 5 stars An easy, informative read.......2002-05-15

This book is excellent. I had to read it as part of the teacher credential program. It is a really easy, plain English book. The content is excellent. It describes where we have been, where we are, and where we will be in terms of technology and how that will impact education. It is not about teaching technology to our students, but about changing the entire way we think about education and using technology to our best advantage. It is about our responsibility to our students to prepare them for the rapidly changing world in which we live. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in education.

      Book Description

A standard in the labor arbitration profession—concise, authoritative overview of the leading arbitral principles developed in 50 years of the NAA.

Your black-letter overview of leading arbitral principles.

In this collection by members of the National Academy of Arbitrators, 16 master arbitrators explain the profession's most widely accepted arbitral principles concerning a variety of arbitration subjects. You get black-letter statements that summarize important points—plus extensive commentary and references that enhance your own perspective on practical and theoretical issues.

The book's unique format helps you discern the key elements of each topic, compare arbitrators' divergent opinions, and locate the appropriate references for details from relevant arbitration awards and treatises.

The Common Law of the Workplace: The Views of Arbitrators, Second Edition provides additional information on ethics in arbitration, application of external law, and drug abuse and violence in the workplace. The new edition also includes discussion of the issues surrounding use of the Parol Evidence Rule.

In addition, citations to court and arbitration decisions have been updated, as have references to secondary authorities. A new, comprehensive index has been added for easy reference.

5 out of 5 stars Succinct, Clear, and a Great Resource.......2007-05-14

The format of this book is a restatement, where each principle is set out as a bold black letter section and underneath it are both commentary and case references. I have found it to be invaluable and fun to read. The principles are divided into different categories commonly associated with labor arbitrations and this is a multi-author work. It may be out of print, and this is a shame, but if you can get it, buy it. Highly recommended for anyone involved in or interested in labor arbitration.

5 out of 5 stars Common Law of the Workplace: The Views of Arbitrators is a great book.......2006-10-20

As an arbitrator, and also a member of the National Academy of Arbitrators, I disagree strongly with the other review. To begin, the book itself makes it clear that it is NOT official National Academy of Arbitrators Policy or viewpoint. Second, the reviewer actually ignored the WHOLE title of the book. It is "The Common Lw of the Workplace: The Views of Arbitrators." If you read it (and this is a readable book, unlike Elkouiri, How Arbitration Works for example), you will find 15 scholarly articles written with differing viewpoints. In fact, the arbitrators disagree with each other on some really major points. These analyses are tied to the record made before the arbitrator, and the unique elements of the contracts which the arbitrator is trying to apply and interpret. Black letter princples are followed by analytical examples. One learns that first line arbitrators are not applying a monolithic "The law of the Shop," but are instead trying to apply "The law of a Shop.' The book deals with matters of procedure and substance. It gives a surprisingly succinct overview of such issues as "just cause" for discipline. The section of "Troubled employees' is lyrical. The intricacies of contract interpretaiton are well laid out -- a difficult subject is made understandable. It has a new section on ethics. Rather than getting a "common law," the careful reader will find a sweet and melodious chorus, which will give you some useful insight into how arbitration cases are really decided by arbitrators. If I could only buy one book on arbitration, this would be it. It provides a lot of 'bang for the buck,'

      4 out of 5 stars Necessary Evil.......2005-11-05

I am the director of labor relations for a state government. I disagree with the fundamental premise of this book inasmuch as I reject the notion that there IS a common law of workplaces. That said, the arbitrators are all citing to this work and it is authoritative. At minimum a practitioner should have it to see what the Academy is thinking and adjust your argument and presentation accordingly.

My beef with the Academy, and they know who they are, is the whole notion of "inherent ambiguity" in contract language espoused in this book. To my mind, it is simply a rationalization for broad equity powers for arbitrators, power that I deny that they have unless expressly conferred by the agreement.

As I said, I disagree with it, but I have it and insist that my staff at least consult it.

        Book Description

In this original and highly useful resource, Colin Rule—a pioneer in the field of online dispute resolution (ODR)—shows how ODR can be used to resolve conflicts which inevitably arise both online and offline in business and commerce. Based on exclusive research and up-to-date best practices, Online Dispute Resolution for Business presents expert advice on how ODR can save time and money, offering timely suggestions and proven approaches for resolving business related conflicts online.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dealing with Disputes in Cyberspace.......2003-05-06

With this work, Colin Rule, who is one of the pioneers of ODR, and also an excellent writer, has given us much to consider about dispute resolution in cyberspace. The book is written for "managers, employees, union representatives, and others who are looking for a better way to handle conflict in their businesses and organizations." There is a interesting overview of the development of online dispute resolution. Also the author discusses his personal experiences in the field, which adds to the overall credibility of the book.

ODR originated in online disputes for which traditional means of dispute resolution were not suited. With as many as 500 million plus people online worldwide, as more businesses and individuals come to realise this significant point, ODR will flourish.

Challenges arising from ODR are covered in sufficient detail by the author and not only alert us to the issues, but also to suggest realistic ways of dealing with them. The author believes that businesses will come to use ODR as matter of course. His book makes a persuasive case for such an outcome.

This is a practical work on an important aspect of ADR.

                Book Description

Have the speed, informality, and low cost of the grievance and arbitration system deteriorated? Has the system become too adversarial? Has it lost its problem-solving character? This book examines the nature and degree of change in workplace dispute resolution in the context of ongoing changes in work and in labor relations.

The volume begins with an editors' introduction that provides context and offers a political perspective on the current state of dispute resolution in the workplace. The chapters that follow contain critiques of the existing legal framework surrounding mandatory arbitration in the nonunion sector and a review of the empirical literature on nonunion dispute resolution. Employment Dispute Resolution and Worker Rights in the Changing Workplace includes sections on grievance mediation, the status of the grievance procedure in workplaces with extensive worker and/or union participation in decision making, and high-performance workplaces. The study concludes with trends in dispute resolution in the public sector and with the alternative dispute resolution system commonly practiced in the unionized construction industry.

There are a number of books on Edward Deming and the quest for quality. I am familiar with this one only, but I found it a very good introduction to quality control. The author shows how a quest for quality can be applied to almost any field of endeavor. With an effort to improve quality Florida Light & Power was able to reduce greatly the number of power outages on its lines. You will find yourself looking at what you do and asking how you can improve. You will also find yourself taking notice of businesses that have a long way to go in achieving quality.

I read the local library's copy and its so good I am going to buy one for myself.

Why? Because Andrea Gabor has researched the topic of Quality well. More to the point, Andrea has given insight to the men who showed how to achieve continual improvement (Quality).

Its more than a good read, there are valuable lessons to be learnt from reading case histories mentioned. Note how successful companies can become!

Reading "The Man Who Discovered Quality" will encourage you to change your attitude towards work. Directors and managers should especially read this insightful reseach, because its within your hands to change business mindset.

You may even want to extend the attitude of Quality into your personal life.

Read it and make up your own mind.
