As a first year principal, I was hoping to gain additional insight into the profession. However, what I found was very basic and largely common sense. I have read several books for my post graduate work that were much more helpful. Sorry-it's not worth the read.
Excellent Book for All Principals.......2000-08-16
This book, Beginning the Principalship: A Practical Guide for New School Leaders, was selected because it had the potential of providing realistic, practical, yet theoretically based information about being a principal. I was not disappointed nor were the 30+ students who used the book. The book was the class text for students taking the course which focused on the principal and how that position influences the organization and administration of a school. Students took the course via an indepdendent study format as well as in the traditional in-class format. Student comments were positive about the book and to a person they indicated they would keep the book as reference. They liked its useability, the examples the authors provided, and the way it was organized. What surprised me were the supportive comments from existing school principals who, out of curiosity, looked over the book that was being used by a colleague. I had three principals inquire about how they could get a copy.
The title indicates the book is for "beginning" principals but the book is valuable for all prinicipals. Through excellent organization of aspects of leading and administering a school the authors provide sound examples of life as a principal. The checklists are excellent reminders for all principals, they sensitize principals to the expectations colleagues and constituents have for principals, and the result of the book is a clear understanding of the demands of the job and what a new or experienced principal values as an educator and person. The educational platform that emerges from the book synthesizes professional and personal values will serve as a foundation for whoever reads the book.
This is an excellent book for potential, new, and experienced school administrators. Its value goes beyond classroom walls as it can be used to help make the adjustment to being a new principal or gaining perspective about being a principal. It is a must read for all school administrators and teachers would benefit from it as well.

After reading this material and hearing Dr. Tice speak, one truth is validated by this book: There is nothing new under the sun. As a theologian, it greatly disturbs me when I read Tice quoting the Bible without formally citing the inspired text -giving credit where credit belongs. His oversights extends with much of Dr. Norman Vincent Peales writings and sermons as well.
The one crucial truth that Tice conspicuously ignores is the depravity of man. Somehow he can't quite bring himself to the reality of the human state --we're all born into the world with a spiritual birth defect called sin and we are in need of divine intervention. He's popular with educators (preferrably middle to high income areas) where the science of positive thinking has appeal. I wish Tice would quote C.S. Lewis.
These positive thinking spins are still very valid however (at least to the degree they are biblical). It's hard not to question the motives of a man who fails to give credit to true sources and someone who lives a very lavish lifestyle.
This Doctor --is the quintessential "spin Doctor" --a theological wantabe and mercenary who packages someone else's work while passing it off as his own, with a new age flair.
Long-Time Fan of Lou Tice.......2007-02-07
My first experience with Lou Tice was in a Corporate Training session in Portland, Oregon in 1978. I really resonated with his approach to personal growth then and when I recently ran across Smart Talk for Achieving Your Potential: 5 Steps to Get You from Here to There, I immediately bought it and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in continuous personal growth as I am.

Makes sense of the concept of "Dreaming to Succeed". Great for all of those 'Hard' psychologists who can't stand 'positive thinking'. Along with Robbins, Tice is the man for achieving your potential.

Lou Tice is the world' best kept secret. If you read at all about personal and professional growth, don't miss any of Lou's work. In addition to writing, he walks the talk and lives life like what is in between the covers of this book. Like the commercial for a certain spaghetti sauce years ago, "it's in there"--everything you could want to know on how to make your mind your tool instead of your master.

Almost perfect.......2004-05-12
Funny, witty, moving inspiring. Lots of role models of different types dealing with emotional, physical, intellectual, social challenges of growing up. Wish I'd had such a book when growing up.
Minor caveat -- lots of discussion of different things girls can be when grown up, but no mention of being a mother. I understand that one does not want to be encouraging teenage girls to have babies, but on the other hand would have been nice to have something addressing what is likely to be a significant portion of a woman's life. For instance, they could have had an essay by a physician who works part-time and is home with kids part-time, to make the point that getting a good education and a skilled professional job can make it easier to do flex-time and work from home. Something to prepare girls to get ready to balance work and family, to be thinking about the choices they will be making, and to acknowledge the importance and satisfactions of the drive to nurture.

The book is really good. The book talks about different women that have have grown up and are telling others their stories. They help others realize that the world is not perfect and how to get though it. I would give this book to anyone I know.
Hillary Clinton names "33 Things..." in July speech.......1998-08-10
This July at the 150th anniversary of the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York, First Lady Hillary Clinton mentioned "33 Things Every Girl Should Know" in her speech before 15,000 people. Two hours after the speech, "33 Things..." was flying off the shelf at a book signing at the Women's Rights National Historical Park. My 13 year old daughter, Elizabeth Jenkins-Sahlin, an author of one chapter called "Get Involved!", autographed 205 books. The books ran out before her writing hand tired. She is the great, great, great granddaughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, early founder of the women's movement. There is no question this chapter and this book empowers girls. Oh, by the way, Elizabeth says, "Even my 50 year old dad likes the book."

Excellent practical book. How to deal with overnight slumber
parties, good table manners, how to behave in class, who pays on
dates, how to avoid arguments with family members, what to do if
you embarrass yourself, how to open up conversations, etc. I wish I'd had this book when I was 14! It would have made such a difference. It answers the questions I was too afraid to ask.
A wonderful gift from any caring adult to any young adult. Simply arranged, nice drawings, not too cumbersome or preachy.
Many adults could benefit from this too!

Although the information is a bit dated, (I'd love to see a new edition of this book!) its warm and friendly style made me think that a book can be a special friend to a girl at an awkward time in her growth and development.
Who will tell a teen that there's a tag sticking up on her shirt or lint on her butt? For someone that can't consult others, a mom or friend, this book can be a friend that provides real help.
The cheery scenerios provided can give a girl con-fidance (and hope) that she can attend the events outlined with that special guy and be wearing just the right thing.
A good emphasis is placed on being yourself and letting your clothes and accessories reflect that special self.
A nice short read. Very helpful. My only criticism is that I would have liked to see a picture of the author.
