    Book Description

Korea is one of the United States' largest trading partners. Currently, it is our sixth largest export market, bigger than those of Australia, Brazil, China, France, or Italy. It is our second fastest growing market for high-tech exports, and it is our fourth largest market for food products. U.S. exports to Korea are increasing and will continue showing double-digit growth in the months ahead. However, it would be a mistake for corporate America to become complacent about this market. This huge export opportunity has not gone unnoticed by our EU and Asia-Pacific competitors. Their direct investments in Korea are steadily expanding and the EU has displaced the U.S. as Korea's largest investor. We predict that the months ahead will see extreme competition as both foreign and domestic firms vie for positions of leadership in this lucrative and growing market.

These opportunities notwithstanding, Korea also has been described as one of the toughest markets in the world for doing business, a place where foreign firms must do their homework and take nothing for granted. A thorough read of this 2001 Country Commercial Guide (CCG) for Korea will go a long way toward helping U.S. companies realize success in this exciting and dynamic market.

Moreover, it is anticipated that leading-edge IT companies will soon overtake Korea's traditional manufacturers as the leaders driving Korea's future economic growth. Korean electronic commerce is expected to double annually for the next five years. With the expansion of demand, imports from the U.S. for semiconductor equipment are estimated to grow at an average annual rate of 25% through 2001. Korea's environmental market will exceed $8.8 billion this year and is expected to grow by 15% annually over the next five years, and will offer countless business opportunities for U.S. exporters.

Over the next 20 years, the Korean government will be spending over $300 billion on infrastructure projects, especially in regions outside of Seoul, (airports, roads, ports, railways, mega-resorts) and is seeking U.S. architectural and engineering expertise. In addition, Korea has allocated almost $60 billion to build nation-wide, over 100 new power generation facilities, while the Korean state-owned energy sector (power generation, oil and gas) is being privatized and is providing great opportunities for U.S. energy companies.

Great for the in dept look at a well run warehouse. Has all the details to help you start or clean-up an operation and help it run like a well oiled machine.

                          5 out of 5 stars This is a must...........2006-10-30

This book is a must for ANY professional working in the finished-goods/products Fulfillment/Distribution world. If your work and responsibilities span anywhere within a FC/DC, you should pick up this book. For less than one hundred bucks, you get one of the best written, concise handbooks I have ever encountered.

It's very important to note that this is not just a dictionary-like handbook, but rather a book that is actually easily readble and enjoyable. It is not for novices, but for anyone with some level of experience, the book comes to life and will help you build depth.

I work for a major e-retailer that disbributes products to end customers. Having worked many years here and picking up most of the know-how from experience alone, I am now questioning why our learning dept doesn't have the insight to make this book a "required" manual for all when we first started. It is excellent and provides great explanations and applications .

Buy it. If I ran a DC/FC, this is a must read for all my mgrs and jr mgrs.

5 out of 5 stars Great warehousing and material handling book.......2003-05-03

This is the best book I've ever found on material handling and warehouse storage. Though a little pricey, this book has content that makes it well worth the cost. Extensive detail on material handling and storage equipment. Also has separate chapters dedicated to small item warehouses, case-pick warehouses, and pallet warehouses.
Anyone designing a new warehouse or redesigning an existing one should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference on production and inventory control.......2003-05-02

Yes, it's a bit expensive, but this book is enormous and packed full of information. At 1200 pages, you're probably not going to read this from cover to cover. Instead, you'll want to have this on your shelf whenever you need information on production and inventory management. The book is actually a compilation of chapters by various authors. On the plus side, this results in having each topic covered by an expert on that specific topic. On the minus side, it results in some redundancy from chapter to chapter and inconsistency in the quality of each chapter.
What's great about this book is that if you need information on a topic related to production and inventory management, you are almost certain to find the topic covered in this book. I definitely recommend this as the starting point in your manufacturing operations library.

                              Book Description

Hardbound. The essays collected in this volume present a broad survey of the state of the art in logistics systems research as viewed by a distinguished group of scholars. The book shows that logistics remains an active, vibrant subject of inquiry. The reasons for this continued development are the following. Firstly, logistic systems are extremely complex with many inherent technical problems, and fundamently new approaches to the subject are frequently arising. Secondly, the practical world of logistics has changed markedly over the past few decades, posing significant new challenges to researchers. This volume focuses mainly on the key developments in the last decade.

This step-by-step handbook gives production and inventory managers the tools they need to choose and implement an optimal materials and capacity requirements planning (MCRP) system that helps reduce costs, increase sales, and improve their firm's competitive position. At the same time, it fully prepares readers to pass the materials and capacity requirements certification exam given by the American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS). After discussing the basics of inventory and capacity control, MCRP, and bills of material, it focuses on advanced techniques and practices, including the information systems aspects of MCRP, and how MCRP interfaces with organizational functions, including customer service, communications, inventory levels, and vendor negotiations.

5 out of 5 stars Keys to understanding ERP.......2002-07-14

Although this book is focused on material and capacity requirements planning from an MRP perspective, the information directly translates into ERP, making this book essential reading for anyone, business- or technically-oriented, in ERP. The reason is the techniques, issues and factors that this book covers are the same for either environment.

First, this book thoroughly describes materials management, workflow and production capacity, and does so in a clear manner. I especially appreciate the fact that the authors take pains to define and explain every term and concept that they introduce. This is a refreshing change from many book in which assumptions about the reader's knowledge is made, which often leads to frustration or misunderstanding. It also removes any ambiguity and ensures that terms that can have multiple meaning are placed into their proper context.

Second, some of the material is out of date. For example the cited limitations of MRP software applications that existed when this book was written in 1993 have long since been rectified in the newer ERP packages from SAP, Baan and J.D. Edwards. However, even in the obviously out-of-date sections of this book are hidden gems, such as the Class ABCD System that was first developed by Oliver Wright as a means of classifying the maturity of MRP implementations based on answers to a 35 question checklist. This checklist can be applied with virtually no modification to ERP systems. Other gems include the way the authors distill major concepts into their salient points, such as TQM, and show how they relate to MRP, again, the same comparisons can be applied to ERP.

The best thing about this book, however, is the detailed treatment of inventory control, materials requirements management, capacity planning and workflow - all of which are as integral to ERP as they are to the older MRP systems that this book describes. As you read this book you will gain an intimate knowledge of how everything works and fits together instead of a high-level conceptual understanding. That, in my opinion, is the best reason to get this book and thoroughly read it. In addition to this book I also recommend "Manufacturing Data Structures: Building Foundations for Excellence With Bills of Materials and Process Information" by Jerry Clement, John Sari and Andy Coldrick. That book adds the information systems perspective that is based on modern ERP systems and seamlessly augments the material in this book.
