This fifth edition of The Business Writer's Handbook consists of nearly 700 spiral-bound pages written with both business students and professionals in mind. (It is also available in a paper-bound version, but how nice to be able to lay the book flat on one's desk for ease of reference.) "Our focus," say the editors, "is on helping professionally oriented writers develop effective skills and strategies for communicating in a rapidly changing environment," and that they do. The entries, arranged alphabetically, are straightforward and to the point. Sandwiched between items addressing issues of English grammar and word usage are guides to writing résumés, resignation letters, and everything in between (e.g., abstracts, annual reports, e-mail, executive summaries, form letters, feasibility studies, memos, mission statements, proposals, and trade journal articles). Throughout the book, the point is made that good writing has a marked effect on business communications--a short, personal collection letter, for instance, "will usually motivate a customer to pay a bill faster than will a form letter." Since the book is written for the business professional, many of the usage and grammar issues are illustrated with business-related examples, but don't think that that means the book isn't any fun. Consider the first sentence in an entry for gobbledygook: "Gobbledygook is writing that suffers from an overdose of traits guaranteed to make it stuffy, pretentious, and wordy." --Jane Steinberg

The authors keep current with common and popular business writing practices. Do they make/set the standards or reflect them? Business writing books abound in the marketplace. This one (or the companion Handbook of Technical Writing) needs to be on the desk of everyone who has to write memos or proposals or reports--next to a good dictionary and the Gregg Handbook.

4 out of 5 stars 7th Edition pulls itself into the 21st Century.......2001-09-27

Having had to wait many weeks for the new, revised 7th Edition I was very pleased to note the improvements made from the 6th Edition. The color examples, universal legend symbols and easy paragraph read for the student are excellent. Another long awaited addition is the expanded Medi-Cal section (applicable to California only). Having been in the industry for 25 year I can say that this is the best Billing book on the market that I have been able to find. The only down side to this book is that it is not written for the "new" biller, but more for an intermediate to experienced biller. As long as the instructor can "dumb down" some of the excellent explanations, students will learn a tremendous amount from this book. I use it in my classroom along with my own material and the students are leaving the class with a well rounded knowledge base. Over all, I am pleased with the new Edition and it's contents.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of info, perhaps too much........1999-10-13

I felt a little bogged down by all the information contained inthis book. It seemed too detailed and included a lot of stuff thatdidn't really apply to just medical insurance (for example thecomplete hypocratic oath which doctors take)! Overall, it was a pretty good book. It would have been a great book if they had cut out about a third or even half of the information. I thought Guide to Medical Billing, by a company called ICDC was much better. A lot of the pertinent data without too much extra. I also liked a book called The Medical Billing Handbook by Jason Cummings.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of the medical billing task........1999-03-01

This is an appropriate text for the medical biller. Although written for the office-based biller, home-based billers will find most (but not all) the information of practical benefit. Used in our homestudy course as a standard text.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Reference for Consultants and IS/IT Ops.......2001-09-14

This is a collection of focused essays divided among five IS/IT management and operational domains:
SECTION 1 (Achieving Strategic IT Alignment), SECTION 2 (Designing and Operating an Enterprise Infrastructure), SECTION 3 (Providing Application Solutions), SECTION 4 (Exploiting Web Technologies)and SECTION 5 (Facilitating Knowledge Work).

Because this book covers such a wide landscape of management and operational issues it is impossible to let a potential reader know which are best since most readers are going to be interested in a particular domain or select topics in more than one of the five domains this book addresses. I'll cite the essays that I read out of personal interest or professional need, or that especially impressed me.

I read all of the essays in Section 1 because of research and professional interest. Each was well written and collectively they contained a wealth of valuable information on topics in that domain.

In Section 2 "Improving Data Center Productivity and Effectiveness", "Quality Assurance and Control" and Quality Information Services all contained invaluable information and reflected the authors' deep knowledge and insights into these topics. I skipped over the other essays in this section, but if the ones I read were any indication of the content and quality of the rest, then this section contains a wealth of information.

"Strategic Use of JAD" in Section 3 was insightful and gave me a lot of ideas on requirements elicitation and management using Joint Application Design workshops as effective approaches. I also liked "Project Success and Customer Needs", "Win-Win Projects" and "Managing the User/IS Relationship", each of which provided complementary approaches to user-center project management and how to assure that your project's final deliverables reflect true user requirements. This cluster of essays would make a small and valuable book in and of themselves.

I skipped over SECTION 4 (Exploiting Web Technologies) because I have other material on that domain; however, I did quickly glance through a few of the essays and thought they were accurate (from what little I read) and well written. Section 5, in its entirety, was filled with useful information. I carefully read through this section and found gems of information and insights in each of the essays, the most interesting of which is "Helping Users Help Themselves".

This book is suited for organizational use more than for individuals because of the range of topics covered. In my opinion the essays were on par with papers produced by the Meta Group, GartnerGroup and other consultative content providers, making this book a bargain and valuable resource.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough consideration of reality.......2007-09-21

This book is your typical leadership book written grammatically well. It is written like a reference book, maybe a bit too much. A bit of a hard read for a slow reader. There are many great tips for how a person should be a principal including managing a school and working with faculty, staff, students, parents, and community treating all entities with considerable equality. McEwan's opinions feel a bit too pushed such as how the principal is always the one that makes the difference and that the principal needs to make [seemingly all] teachers leaders, and that a principal must be a leader of leaders. While the model may be true, it may not be feasible to make sure every single teacher is a "leader" in their own sense. Some teachers may be jealous of the principal, some teachers will not get along with other teachers at all and so should non-collaboration between two teachers necessarily be blamed on by the principal? McEwan certainly makes it seem that way. The suggestions of having the principal involved in every aspect of school is great, but her specific numbers for criteria can be questionable. It's not as much of quantity as quality with what you have available. She also does not consider situations where schools are underfunded to begin with and just expects principals to be able to "wave their magic wand" and wallah a good school. If life were only that easy.

          5 out of 5 stars Motivating.......2007-03-11

Motivating book that makes a person feel like they could become a principal, as long as they are to work very hard.

5 out of 5 stars The author understands the challenges of today's principal........1998-07-20

Elaine McEwan's book is one of the most direct and useful tools I have found for today's principals. The book provides clear descriptions about quality education and a means to self evaluate current practices. I shared the book with my superitendent and we used the material during a summer administrative retreat. The text and the material were accepted by principals from both the elementary and secondary levels. Elain McEwan has captured the aspects of "Quality Education" in a useable and friendly book.

Elaine first brings the focus back to the building principal and the understanding that we are the most important piece of school improvement. The author understands the need for management; however, emphasizes educational, instructional leadership. Dr. McEwan shares the belief as stated in Warren Bennis's writings that the school leader needs to have vision and commitment. Elaine further explains that school leaders need to be knowledgable about! learning theory, curriculum, and effective instruction. The text book provides outlines of the desired components. Identifying desired learning results is a primary step of this books. Elaine McEwan reaffirms the statements of Larry Lezotte in his book "Learning for All." She states, "When our students are successful, we are successful." The author understands we can never expect our staff to grow and expand if we are not supportive and leading. Create direct ways to encourage growth and be a learner with your team. Elaine visits and challenges the reader on creating a culture and climate for maximum learning. She discusses the importance of communicating the vision and raising expectations of staff and families. Elaine McEwan has developed a handbook that should be part of your daily activities.

I have personally been through Covey training, been a candidate and a facilitator at the Indiana Principal's Leadership Academy (IPLA), trained! on "The Instructional Process," TESA, and "! Choice Theory" and find this books a summary of solid educational approaches. The end of the chapter summaries and descriptors created a new awareness and raised my own expectations.

I believe Elaine McEwan is a leading current author for the practicing principal in the field of education. Elaine believes in schools and has the vision of classrooms becoming better and better. You will always be glad that this book is a part of your working collection.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 2007 Edition: Excellent reference for budgeting or estimating.......2006-12-28

The 2006 Edition is a worthwhile buy and pays for itself quickly. I wish I had bought it much earlier in my home budgeting process. The information is well organized in a user-friendly manner. It even has cost adjustment factors for hundreds of cities. This should help you to be prepared somewhat before you start negotiating with builders and contractors.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book if you are building your own home.......1999-08-25

This is an excellent book for estimating the costs involved in building a new home. It provides enough detail to get a good idea on costs. It is not as detailed as some of the other books out there but for a person like myself it has proved to be an invaluable tool. And it is easy enough to use as opposed to some of the other books out there.
