From the supplier: Kindred, ND-based Cass County Electric Cooperative responded to increasing competition by establishing an alliance with a non-utility company. Since the 1970s, the rural electric system has been facing increasing competition from much larger and better funded suppliers of oil, propane and natural gas. To enhance its competitiveness, the company entered into a joint venture with Electro Industries Inc. of Monticello, MN, to manufacture and market a quality electric fireplace. This decision was driven by the very real threat posed by gas fireplaces to the share of electric fireplaces in the new home construction market. It was also influenced by the smaller amount of investment that the proposed project required compared to the cost of a legal battle with natural gas providers that it had incurred the previous year. The joint venture not only made Cass County Electric more competitive, but it also improved the company's marketing efforts.

Book Description
This book concerns the most important relationship most people have outside the family: the relationship between an employer and an employee. That relationship is crisscrossed by a complex web of laws and regulations. This book describes those laws in a direct, straightforward fashion.
The Georgia Employer's Guide provides the "lay of the land" of personnel law and regulations and integrates the state and federal law that is relevant to an employer. Each section of the book attempts to include both the underlying concept and a simple, straightforward rule.
This book is written in small, self-contained sections. The reader does not need to refer to the rest of the chapter, much less the rest of the book, to find information about a topic. Although this method of writing causes some duplication, it more than repays the reader in the efficiency of its use.
The Georgia Employer's Guide is supplemented at least yearly, and more often if major legislation or court cases require. In order to incorporate updated pages easily, the book is published in a three-ring notebook. The Georgia Employer's Guide is, and will continue to be, one of the most current employment law books available anywhere in the nation.
"Memo English" is used throughout this book. Whenever possible, the author has avoided terms not found regularly in a newspaper and discussions that would appear out-of-place in a business memo. This book is a non-technical discussion of technical topics.

Book Description
This intriguing book explodes the myth of the self-fulfilling career and instructs readers how to glean entrepreneurial success by following their creative interests. Dr. Jan argues that "success need not be a grueling, one-struggle-after-another ordeal. Nor does success as an entrepreneur need need to entail using guerrilla warfare, taking advantage or always being 'one up' on your competitors. "On the contrary," she states, "it is only when work becomes play that you will reach the pinnacle of success."
Michael Phillips, the inventor of Master Charge has said, "The hardest thing to convince people is a fact that only the very rich know, the way to make a lot of money is to do exactly what you want to do and exactly the way you want to do it."
"Play and Grow Rich" is not, however, about laying back and loafing until your ship comes in. Jan Gault maintains that 'successful entrepreneurship is an 'art, a dance and celebration of life'. When you pursue those goals that are right for you, that align with your personality and deepest values, you can work almost indefinitely without becoming fatigued or discouraged.
The Entrepreneurial Challenge:
"To reach the heights of success" Dr Jan explains, "you need to know where you currently stand and begin charting your path. To assist you in assessing your present entrepreneurial status, the book includes an 'Entrepreneur Questionnaire' that lets you rate yourself on thirty key elements of success."
Each year thousands of hopeful entrepreneurs set out to make their mark. But what happens? Fewer than twelve percent of those persons who go into business for themselves make it. And less than one percent make it big. The failure rate is staggering. What then goes wrong? Is it just a matter of blind luck and fate? Or is there an extra something which distinguishes top entrepreneurs from those who are forever limping along? If so, what is this magic ingredient and how do you get it? Dr. Jan addresses these issues, telling us that, "No, it is definitely not a matter of chance, fate or how the cards fall. Whether you achieve riches is not written in the stars but is almost entirely up to you. Fortunately, those mysterious elements that separate the successful from the unsuccessful can be learned just as concrete factual data is learned. It is simply a bit trickier. It involves the interplay of time, creativity, and purpose."
"Play and Grow Rich" contains twenty-one Time Block strategies for playing your way to riches, among them are the Millionaire Play Sheet, Conflict-Free-Living, Risk-Taking, Endless Tape Dynamics and Instilling a Wealth Consciousness.
Dr. Jan recommends that you first ask yourself. "What is it I truly enjoy?" She states, "Inside each of us is a stirring for truth and vital self-expression. Mostly we feel these inner inklings but momentarily then we get sidetracked in a job we dislike, and in the influx of daily distractions and temptations. Through tapping your innermost being and learning to put your time together in harmony with your purpose, you allow riches to flow into your life. A seven-step process points the reader in this direction."
Jan Gault enthusiastically proclaims. "In this day of modern technology, heightened awareness and discretionary time, each of us has the opportunity to create the personal world of our choice to live where we want to live, do what we want to do and grow rich in the process."
Whether you are a seasoned entrepreneur looking for greater success or just getting started, Play and Grow Rich with its provocative messages inspiring lessons and sensitive insights is guaranteed to help you fine tune your life for greater prosperity, pleasure and purpose.

ERP: The Implementation Cycle (COMPUTER WEEKLY PROFESSIONAL) (Computer Weekly Professional) (Computer Weekly Professional)
ASIN: 0471392014 |
Book Description
Follow the "Proven Path" to successful implementation of enterprise resource planning
Effective forecasting, planning, and scheduling is fundamental to productivity-and ERP is a fundamental way to achieve it. Properly implementing ERP will give you a competitive advantage and help you run your business more effectively, efficiently, and responsively. This guide is structured to support all the people involved in ERP implementation-from the CEO and others in the executive suite to the people doing the detailed implementation work in sales, marketing, manufacturing, purchasing, logistics, finance, and elsewhere.
This book is not primarily about computers and software. Rather, its focus is on people-and how to provide them with superior decision-making processes for customer order fulfillment, supply chain management, financial planning, e-commerce, asset management, and more. This comprehensive guide can be used as a selective reference for those, like top management, who need only specific pieces of information, or as a virtual checklist for those who can use detailed guidance every step of the way.
Customer Reviews:
Marred by confusion in thinking and presentation.......2007-06-09
This book has a good mission and scope, and the prose is clear and straightforward. The thinking underneath the prose is, unfortunately, often confused. It's as if the paragraphs were competently edited, but not the chapters or major arguments. "There are three kinds of companies," says page 20; on page 59 there are again three kinds of companies, and the categorization is sorta-almost the same. Five minutes of scrutiny finally reveals the two comparison-sets are not congruent. This is strange and unsatisfactory, because making them so would have been easy and certainly would serve the reader better.
The book sometimes balks at simple realities. "One kind of company" already has ERP software installed and hasn't gotten the hoped-for return, and people are frustrated. The solution is to re-implement, and "the good news is that having the software already installed certainly makes life easier in some important respects ... The bulk of the software has already been selected." But what if the software was poorly chosen and won't do the job? That's the situation I face, and none of the three categories deals with this not uncommon scenario.
That's from the chapter titled "Software," which has other problems. There are some good ideas; don't get the module organization of a software package confused with your real organizational units, for example. But there's no clear general orientation to the software issues, not much for creating meaningful comparisons between products, no acknowledgment that fraudulent marketing is a real danger or that seemingly universal terms can carry very different meanings simply by their contextual scope.
My disappointment with the book increased sharply during the instructions for ROI assessment. The presentation of concepts was muddled, but I persevered and hammered out a complete ROI document. I'm a database builder, not a money analyst or manager, and I was proud of the result when I sent it off to the owners. It's now a few weeks later and I am halfway through 'The Goal' by E. Goldratt. And my ROI is false, I realize, because this ERP book fails to help the reader convert "better efficiency" into dollars returned. An improvement belongs on the ROI if dollars are returned. That means for a reduction in costs for non-production labor (for example), you have to say which salaried workers will no longer work at the company. I rewrote my ROI. I said what positions could go (including my own), but the grounding-to-earth also forced me into a lower percentage for benefits. It was the same for improvements in gross revenue. On that point the ERP book even fails to point out that a gain in gross sales is not to be interpreted as a gain in profit. Now if I were any kind of analyst, I wouldn't have been fooled; but I don't think the book should go out of its way to cloud up the core issues, and that's what this one does. I'm just glad I sent a corrected ROI (and still with an exciting return) before the owners themselves had to point out my incompetence.
I won't get fooled again. A second ERP primer text is coming my way.
Complete focus on what's important: processes and management.......2002-07-03
If you're exploring an enterprise-wide solution, even if it isn't an ERP package, or are planning an implementation after the software has already been selected this book will prove invaluable. Unlike other books about ERP (and e-business and enterprise application integration for that matter), this one is focused on the business processes and what it takes to prepare for and manage the implementation.
Of course, while much of this book applies at a high level to any enterprise application, it is all about ERP. The authors take great pains to avoid talking about software, which in itself is refreshing. They also skillfully guide you through a panorama of key issues, including what ERP is and how it fits into the overall scheme of business value and competitiveness. However, the best part of this book is their implementation strategy, which explores how an ERP package is going to require changes at the business process level, how to break down the implementation into manageable stages. In this respect the book is a combination of a management overview of ERP, organizational change strategies, and project management approach to implementation.
The key areas addressed by this book reflect reality. For example, all of the major challenges that you're likely to face are addressed. The critical success factors, such as training, preparing the organization for the system (from a people perspective), and the way the implementation phases are sequenced can either be learned from this book, or learned the hard way (which is sure to include schedule and cost overruns at best and a disaster at worst). In particular, the process-oriented approach that is reiterated throughout the book needs to be heeded. This is the essence of any ERP package, and it will change your organization. This book gives good advice on how to effect the shift from discrete jobs and procedures to a workflow.
In addition to this excellent book I highly recommend two other resources: (1) "Scorecard System For World Class Enterprise Resource Management" by Travis Anderegg, which is a unique book/online survey combination you can use to evaluate the alignment of your ERP system to business processes, and (2) "Enterprise Resource Planning Systems: Systems, Life Cycle, Electronic Commerce, and Risk" by Daniel Edmund O'Leary. O'Leary's book completely complements this one and fills in a few gaps.

Book Description
Supply Chain Management concerns organizational aspects of integrating legally separated firms as well as coordinating materials and information flows within a production-distribution network. The Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) systems being used for transaction handling and order execution in most firms today have been supplemented by Advanced Planning Systems (APS) for coordinating flows, exploiting bottlenecks and keeping due dates. Various optimization techniques can be applied by APS to improve plans according to business targets. This book provides insights regarding the concepts underlying APS. Special emphasis is given to modelling supply chains and implementing APS in industry successfully. Understanding is enhanced through the use of case studies as well as an introduction to the solution algorithms used. The second edition contains a considerable quantity of new material, especially a novel chapter on collaborative planning.
Customer Reviews:
Advanced Planning.......2006-06-24
Any review of supply chain management in general has to begin with Michael Porter's 1985 (now available in a 1998 edition) best seller "Competitive Advantage." For software, one would begin with Christopher Koch's "The ABCs of Supply Chain Management" where he states "Supply chain management software is possibly the most fractured group of software applications on the planet. . . . No one has a complete package." and then move on to the EDIGuys "Supply Chain Information Systems" for specifics on the background, buzz, and hype. But, if you are interested in applying modelling and associated quantitative methods (Advanced Planning) to the supply chain management paradigm, then there is probably no better place to begin than Stadtler and Kilgers book. They lead you through concepts to implementation with six case studies from various industries. And, the supplementary material covering forecast methods, linear and mixed integer programming, genetic algorithms, and constraint programming is invaluable.

A very broad view of Supply Chain Management and APS.......2002-01-14
This book will give every reader a very good view of the Supply Chain Management concepts. It will take the reader from the Strategic point of view, through the Demand Planning Systems to the Advance Planning Systems. A very good book to put every concept into a global perspective, with some case studies that will help the reader to make the transition from the theory to the pratical aspect of Supply Chain Information Systems.
State-of-the Art thinking on Supply Chain Management.......2001-10-11
I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the high quality and standard of the book, Supply Chain Management and Advanced Planning. It reflects state-of-the-art thinking as well as current views, and contains up-to-date case studies of supply chain management and advanced planning systems. There is no doubt that the authors are working at the cutting edge of the supply chain management field. They show intimate knowledge of practical advanced planning applications as well as implementation issues around a variety of commercially available software systems.
Recent information technology developments have changed modern manufacturing organizations dramatically. We have witnessed the introduction of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, such as SAP and BAAN, aimed at integrating internal processes in an organization. These systems cut across multiple functional areas and provide a corporate wide database with all the relevant data of an organization. Many believed that these systems would address all the problems and lead to drastic improvements of business performance. This focus on internal processes, however, was not sufficient since, in a sense, it was not able to cope with the exceptions and with the variability that confront organizations on a daily basis. State-of-the-art planning procedures, provided by Advanced Planning Systems (APS), are required to allow organizations to reduce the amount of exceptional situations. An APS exploits the environment created by ERP systems and this has created major breakthroughs in enterprise wide planning. The impact has spread wider to collaborative planning amongst supply chain partners. This book is devoted to Advanced Planning Systems, the concepts underlying these, the current limitations of APS, how it links and interacts with ERP systems, what is required for successful implementation, etc. Through using, testing and implementing APS modules developed by companies such as i2 Technologies, J.D. Edwards and SAP A.G., the authors gained many insights. Practical real-world experiences are captured in the various chapters of the book.
This book covers an immense quantity of Supply Chain Management material. It is presented in a logical and easily understandable way. Here and there it is obvious that the authors are not fully comfortable with English but it is not very distracting. The book is comprehensive and the different aspects of supply chain management are outlined in great detail. I found the book a real pleasure to work through. What impressed me most was the ease with which the authors of the various chapters dealt with complex and sometimes very interrelated supply chain aspects. From a personal point of view, the emphasis on quantitative tools to assist and improve planning was very encouraging. This is something that is not recognized and appreciated enough. This book is a must for every logistics professional. Buying this book will be a worthwhile investment!
Good reference for advance supply chain management analyst.......2001-07-26
It is very good reference for all analyst to have this book. It explain the detail configuration to achieve optimum supply chain effectiveness. At the end of this book, it introduces also solutions for advance planning by several high-end vendors such as J.D. Edwards etc.
