Foundation Folly.......2001-07-03

The brain trust at the Foundation Center has done it again -- unfortunately. Space prevents me from fully documenting the misery, heartache, and downright evil this misbegotten "book" has already wrought.

Witness: My attempts to contact the "Education Research Foundation" in Atkinson, NC (cited on p. 93) resulted in unwarranted phone charges (which appeared on my bill as "Eccentric Passions Inc."), postal threats, and an unsightly rash. No problem, you say, consult the volume and contact a medical foundation. No can do! All my calls to "Cataractus Medical Grants" in Montclair, NJ were ignored -- until I received a huge package at my place of work -- at *my* expense -- which STUNK! (Literally; the stench was both foul and unwelcome.)

Jeffrey Falkenberg, the erstwhile "compiler" of this atrocity, initially refused to take my calls, then began ringing me in the wee hours of the morning moaning about his girlfriend. It was not until we met for dinner and a bottle of wine that we got to the root of his problem -- which doesn't help me one iota.

In short, the sheer girth of this book alone would require Charles Atlas to transport -- with me upon his back and the book carried in a cart. "Foundation Directory?" I say "Foundation Phooey." Save your money and go see "A.I."

The Most Helpful Book Ever!.......2001-05-20

I wouldn't ordinarily expect to write a glowing review of such a massive tome, especially one without plot, conflict, or even characters, but this is a book EVERYONE needs to get their hands on. Need money to start a small businees? Find it here. Want a grant to study abroad? They've got 'em! Need to find a foundation to underwrite your organization? David G. Jacobs has combed through what must amount to millions of IRS records to bring to you the best organized, most up-to-date, and just plain gigantic volume of philanthropy- 10,000 entries of philanthropic fury!- to ever bend a bookcase shelf. David G. Jacobs has done a superb job in producing this volume, which is a terriffic upgrade over last year's edition. I can only imagime the supreme effort, long hours, blood and sweat put in by editor DAVID G. JACOBS!

Empowers Producers Against Moochers and Looters.......2006-02-27

From the aptly named Galt Press comes the Complete Guide to Asset Protection Strategies by Mark Warda, Attorney at Law. In modern America, no one remains safe from frivolous lawsuits. A person's entire life savings can vanish overnight thanks to a tort system that rewards envy and careless living. The American legal system authorizes tort lawyers to work on contingency fees with no penalty other than wasted time if they lose but huge payoffs if they win. This arrangement encourages the filing of frivolous lawsuits against easy yet wealthy targets. According to the author:

"The system is much more favorable to people filing suit than to people defending themselves. ... In England the loser must pay the winner's attorney fees, so only serious claims are filed. But here there is no risk to bringing a weak or even false claim. It is so expensive to defend a suit that often innocent people pay a large settlement rather than pay twice as much in attorney fees to win. ... England (and most other countries) forbid contingent fees for attorneys."

Producers work their entire lives, saving, investing, and building their net worth, only to have such a disaster strike. Under these conditions, the wise producer prepares for the worst by acquiring the knowledge he needs to protect his assets and then acting accordingly. This book offers such knowledge.

Warda divides his book into six sections:

1. Overview of Asset Protection Planning
2. Shielding Yourself Against Claims
3. Protecting Property in Your Name
4. Taking Property Out of Your Name
5. When Disaster Strikes
6. Your Immediate Action Plan

In total, 51 chapters articulate the content of these six powerful parts of an overall asset protection plan. In addition, Warda includes two appendices that delineate asset exemptions by state as well as offer camera-ready legal forms to help the reader to "cover his assets."

"Some have said that bankruptcy is too easy and that people with millions of dollars in exempt assets are abusing the system. I dare say that people who are being awarded millions of dollars for such things as "emotional damages" by using psychological profiles of jurors are no less guilty of abusing the system. Your use of bankruptcy can cure the abuse of a creditor's misuse of the courts."

Describes a number of asset protections strategies, and for the real estate owner, explains how to combine the strategies together to potently isolate your liabilities and defend your assets. Read together with his book on land trusts.

Disappointing Regurgitation of Old Ideas.......2004-10-23

I was very disappointed with this book, and only after reading it did I find out that Warda doesn't even practice in the area of asset protection, but instead just cranks out "self-help" type book (over 60, according to his own plug). The old phrase "Jack of All Trades, Master of None" seems to be particularly applicable to Mr. Warda's knowledge of asset protection, which translates into little more than a re-write of other (now outdated) works from last century. I guess you'll buy this if you want the entire Warda-on-everything collection, but take a pass if your specific interest is asset protection.

High Quality Information.......2007-03-16

The past reviewer dating from February 8, 2007 is correct about his three points; however all he had to do was download the current forms from the IRS website for free read the IRS instructions on how to fill out the current forms, and complete the rest of the documentation. Outside of these three minor issues the rest of the information is correct and valid. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to save some money, and gain some experience.

OUT OF DATE FORMS & WRONG INSTRUCTIONS........2007-02-09

Until I started forming the LLC I was confident that the book was helpful. But when I started filling out the forms I realized the forms in the book namely the ss-4 & 8832 were outdated. And the way the author fills out "Type of entity" on form ss-4 is 100% wrong. LLCs have to be classified as sole proprietor, partnership or corporation on the ss-4. The author's way of putting LLC under the "OTHER" column will get your ss-4 application returned back to you like mine was. My advice is to look for a more up to date book or use a lawyer.
