        5 out of 5 stars Not a text I'm selling back.......2007-08-01

This was a required text for a graduate class and I thought it was good enough to keep. It is a great introductory book that provides a good look at many of the different theories. It is true that it is not really deep, but that is what makes it a good introductory book. It goes just deep enough to help you understand.

        5 out of 5 stars A Good Introductory Textbook.......2007-02-01

This is a required text for my graduate class, but it does a good job of introducing student development theory

        5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2005-10-07

Book arrived in record time...just in time for my class so I was very pleased. It was also in great shape and very well packaged. Thanks.

        3 out of 5 stars Theory Light.......2004-04-22

I applaud the authors' attempt to provide an accessible, easy to understand synthesis of student development theory, but they have sacrificed depth for breadth and left the reader with a text that, like over-processed food, provides some nutrition but ultimately fails to satisfy. The book is below the level of most master's degree students and practitioners in student affairs, though it might provide a useful introduction to theory for undergraduates or a useful reference book for administrators who don't have time to read original sources.

        5 out of 5 stars excellent overview.......2001-02-18

I also used this book in my graduate program. This book provides an excellent overview student development theory. It is an excellent introductory text. I had the added benefit of using this text in a course taught by one of the authors.

                    Book Description

This pathbreaking volume conveys the "state of the art" of contemporary research on productivity growth and international competitiveness--arguably the most important problems facing contemporary economics. Adopting a worldwide perspective that features comparative analyses of both industrialized and developing countries, the book assembles papers from an international roster of leading scholars who cover a wide range of complementary topics and approaches. A number of the papers attempt to increase the clarity of thinking about "competitiveness" by developing formal definitions of the concept and relating it to more conventional economics concepts such as productivity. Some provide a macroeconomic perspective whereas others compare cross-sections of individual industries across countries or analyze the efficacy of industrial policies to promote competitiveness. Among the common themes, which are highlighted in the editor's overview chapter, are the measurement of labor and total factor productivity, accounting for the sources of productivity growth, the use of purchasing power parity indexes in international comparisons of productivity levels, the worldwide productivity slowdown, the extent of productivity convergence among developed economies, the primacy of exchange rate fluctuations in short-term movements of competitiveness since the early 1970's, and the causes of the apparent loss of U.S. competitiveness during the 1980's.

4 out of 5 stars Closing the productivity gap.......2006-11-13

This book discusses and proposes how EU countries can close the productivity gaps among them. Chapter 1 of the book is the key chapter for it sets the stage. It argues that productivity gaps depend on efficiency. However, often equally efficient economies can also experience differential productivity. The reason is that the diffusion of productivity is a function of a nation's "social capability", "technological congruence", trade, and foreign direct investment.

Chapters 2-6 of the book examine the mechanisms through which " social capability", "technological congruence", trade, and foreign direct investment come to affect productivity growth. The chapters draw their examples mainly from Central-East Europe.

The seventh chapter adds policy dimensions to the productivity gaps within the EU. Chapter 8 briefly details the implications of the results to productivity catch-up and competitiveness internationally.

Again the first chapter carries the book; its excellent overview would benefit any reader. Policymakers would gain the most from other parts of the book.

                          Book Description

Globalization and structural adjustment offer many opportunities for export orientated industrialization in developing economies. As a group, competitiveness in the developing countries has improved, but, while East Asian economies have had rapid export growth and technological upgrades, South Asian and African economies have lagged behind. Old structures, institutions, behavioural patterns and public policies are ill-adapted to deal with the challenges posed by technological change and economic liberalization. Consequently there is an urgent need for change in government and private sector attitudes and strategies.
This volume seeks to generalise the lessons across developing country and enterprise cases, and sheds light on which trade and industrial strategies and instruments work best, and which do not work, in relation to manufacturing competitiveness.

                            Book Description

David Dollar and Edward Wolff look at claims that a deindustrialized United States is on the road to secondrate status in the global marketplace and find them to be both unfounded and simplistic. Their systematic and empirical investigation of the mechanisms through which countries like Japan and Germany have caught up with the United States in terms of productivity and standard of living will inform public debate about which government policies are likely to improve a nation's competitiveness.

Looking at productivity convergence from the industry and subindustry level, Dollar and Wolff also examine questions of the relationship of productivity growth in individual industries to convergence of overall productivity in developed countries, the identification of industries crucial for aggregate productivity growth, the sources of productivity growth within industries, the relationship between international trade and productivity convergence, and whether the same mechanics of convergence are at work in developing countries.

The authors' findings reveal, among other things, that the slowness of U.S. productivity growth relative to other nations is largely due to forces pushing for convergence of aggregate productivity levels. Although other countries have been catching up with the U.S., there is no evidence that they will surpass the US. or that the U.S. has deindustrialized.

Perhaps most important, Dollar and Wolff find that countries catch up by raising their productivity levels in all manufacturing industries, not by large shifts of their employment and output from low- to high-value-added sectors. The growing similarity of advanced economies in terms of overall productivity masks a continued high degree of specialization in particular industries. Today different countries are the productivity leaders in different industries. Accordingly, the authors recommend that public policy focus on institutions and policies to promote innovation in general, rather than in key industries, and on free trade rather than protectionism.

David Dollar is Senior Economist at the World Bank. Edward N. Wolff is Professor of Economics at New York University.

                              Book Description

Is Afghanistan competitive? With the globalization of markets, the increased mobility of corporate assets, and the need for productive human resources, this question has become all the more complex to answer. This report was prepared to tackle this question by focussing on certain fundamentals: financial performance and labor productivity.

In the former case, we are essentially interested in the degree to which firms operating in Afghanistan have fundamentally different financial structures and performance compared to firms located elsewhere. With respect to this view of competitiveness, if one were to invest or operate in Afghanistan, how would the firm's asset structure likely vary compared to a firm operating in some other country in The Middle East or average location in the world? In Afghanistan, do firms typically hold more cash and other short term assets, or do they concentrate their assets in physical plant and equipment? On the liability side, do firms operating in Afghanistan have a higher percent of payables compared to other firms operating in The Middle East, or do they hold a higher concentration of long term debt? The structure of the income statement is also telling. Do firms operating in Afghanistan have relatively higher costs of goods sold, operating costs, or income taxes compared to firms located elsewhere in the region or the world in general? Are returns on equity higher in Afghanistan? Are profit margins greater? Are inventories held longer? Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5 are designed to answer these and similar questions that naturally affect one's decision to invest or operate in Afghanistan. In many instances, people make all the difference. In addition to financial competitiveness, this report considers the extent to which labor deployment and productivity in Afghanistan differs from regional and global benchmarks. In this case, we are interested in the amount of labor required to operate a typical...
