This handbook is a wonderful reference for broadcast writing and offers good general tips as well. The authors bring personal experiences to the book, and though I read this for a college journalism course, it was an enjoyable read and I intend to keep it on hand as I begin my uphill climb in the TV news world.

                    Book Description

Is it possible to complete projects on-time and on-budget using geographically distributed "virtual" teams?

Yes! Here's the book that shows you how. Packed with practical tools and proven techniques for managing virtual teams for optimum performance, this expert author uses real-world examples and specific guidelines to show you how distributed work groups can be even more productive, effective and flexible than traditional co-located teams.

Supported by extensive research, the book addresses the most commonly identified managerial concerns such as communication, control, monitoring, team building, cultural differences, and legal and process issues. You're provided with a framework of principles and best practices for dealing with these concerns, plus step-by-step procedures for "transitioning teams," and tips on using high-speed networks and groupware as tools for solving problems. What's more, you learn how to...

                    >Reduce costs and time to market with round-the-world, round-the-clock work flow

                    >Integrate remotely located technical experts into a team and take advantage of remotely located corporate resources

                    >Build stronger products and markets with partnerships and joint ventures

Managing Virtual Teams, contains communication principles and management practices that won't become outdated with the next release of a software program. The author outlines the benefits of concentrating first on the investment that needs to be made in people, planning, processes, and training, not on technology alone.

5 out of 5 stars Great Management Perspective.......2002-07-02

I have really looked a long time to find a book that has a practical management perspective. Most of the books I've read on virtual teams either focus on bits and bytes (which I don't need since I'm an IT Director) or high level organizational theory. This book had some really practical suggestions that I could implement to improve communication and control for my team.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical and useful.......2002-06-29

If you are managing geographically distributed teams this is a "save your life" kind of book. Short and to the point with techniques based on actual research instead of myths or stories. I found the 4 key principles for effective distance communication very helpful. I saw immediate improvement in my team's communications once we began using the ideas.

1 out of 5 stars Skimpy, pedantic and superficial.......2002-04-30

I rarely write reviews, and as an author myself I'm loath to criticize another's work. But this one I couldn't let go by...

At 147 pages (main text) there was nowhere near enough "meat" to justify ...[the price tag.]

The writing style was boring and pedantic.

Most of the chapters just skimmed the surface and lacked
substance; the topics are covered much more thoroughly by other
                    authors.

Chapter 6, Networking Technology, at 12 pages, was much too
"thin" and already out of date; less than 2 full pages
were devoted to the 'section' on securing the network -- a
                    major concern these days.

                    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2001-12-05

I recently reviewed a number of books on distance work for a current project at a research center (...)and found Haywood's to be the best in its class. Haywood does a great job of describing the problems of distance work from different perspectives (manager, employee), and she gives sound advice on how to address these problems. Her prescribed solutions are balanced, and include some new technologies (e.g. personal web pages), but mostly she gives good advice on raising awareness of problems and setting reasonable policies for use of communications.

Haywood's book has more analysis and fewer case studies than others in this genre, which is what I was looking for. She does include plenty of vignettes, but they are short and to the point.

5 out of 5 stars Haywood is my hero!.......2001-11-03

This highly organized, "how-to" book is best in class. From its pragmatic examples to its in depth understanding of
"real" work processes, this book examines all of the aspects of v-teams and is fairly objective in its recommendations. While not giving "deification" to I.T., it DOES break down the elements of IT necessary for success. GREAT BOOK for managers of projects which span geographies

5 out of 5 stars No Fluff - Just the Good Stuff.......2003-01-25

As an MLS student informed that I'm to aspire to Management, I have since been on the lookout for more nuts and bolts training in this area. I have found a lot of theory and description of various problems but little that would help me concretely in my first library manager job- until now. Reading this small book has been like finding a great mentor. She doesn't waste time on the obvious but goes straight to clarifying the confusing, messy or difficult issues. I'll admit she seems to have no sense of humor, but she is fearless in her description and analysis of organizational problems that can plague libraries. And she has this uncanny knack of answering questions that I didn't know I had such as "What should my relationship be with my former co-workers/employer?" and "What are the legal minefields for today's library manager?".

The book is aimed at first-time middle managers, a surprisingly little-served segment of the management world. Most advice for managers is directed towards first-time front-line or to those whose next career step is CEO. So its intended audience alone makes this book worthy of notice. In addition, she recognizes the unique issues of the manager also in the role of working-leader - very common in today's underfunded libraries.

The author begins by explaining what you should be doing between getting hired and your first day at the job. It is thorough and goes beyond the expected. Following this is a plan for your first 24 months on the job. Here you can get a handle on what managerial task should be done when and learn that timing can be everything. Part of this effort will involve deciding on an actual organizational structure between bureaucracy and teams or both or something in between. Bureaucracy is sometimes actually the best choice for both the employees and the work involved as she explains. We also learn the difference between teams and work groups and why it's important to not confuse the two.

Other areas the author addresses include meetings, planning tools , supervising professionals and supervising non-traditional employees. She teaches how to use meetings to their full advantage, but also encourages other means of communication when a high percentage of employees work part-time or telecommute (these would be the non-traditional employees). Sophisticated planning tools such as Interactive Planning and Scenario Setting are introduced along with the more standard ones. And at last someone clearly explains the difference between a Mission Statement and a Vision!

I expected the chapter on decision-making to be the most perfunctory, but I was pleasantly surprised. She readily admits that the various business school decision-making models do not account for irrational people or organizations which makes them pretty hard to follow in a lot of libraries. Instead, she walks us through a "hardware store", if you will, pointing out the best tools (questions) to use for different types of materials (organizations) . These materials (organizations) have been identified/measured using other measuring devices or tools (questions of a different nature). Her discussion on this topic seemed so grounded in reality that I was not surprised to learn that her dissertation topic was "Making Decisions under Chaotic Conditions". The chapter on communication was just as useful and could easily have been titled " How to Successfully Negotiate with Anyone and Still Respect Yourself the Next Day."

On the whole, this book is an excellent resource for new library managers or experienced ones who want to brush up on the latest business theories most helpful and applicable to running a library today. I do have two criticisms, though. Use of examples would facilitate an even quicker grasp of the different ideas; I suspect these were left out to keep the length more handbook and less textbook. My more serious criticism is the lack of attention to TQM - Total Quality Management. TQM is popping up everywhere in all manner of non-profits and for-profits. It looks like a business practice that is here to stay, but which few of us have learned in school. This book would have been a great place to see it discussed with respect to libraries...maybe in the next edition.

A Practical Study Guide for New or Busy Managers in Libraries and Other Information Agencies Second North American Edition ©2007 (Library Education Series)

Two veteran library administrators provide a concise, practical workbook to support busy managers for whom a 700-page management book would be too time consuming. It is intended for those on the front lines, facing the challenge of supervising a busy work environment, but at the same time aware that they need to delve a little deeper into management issues to gain a broader understanding of why some approaches work and some do not. It is also a basic introduction to established management principles and practices for library students and for library staff embarking on their first supervisory roles.

The authors cover management functions; operational, strategic and event planning; human resource management, including team building and managing change; financial and marketing management; security issues; and managing self. They make ample use of case studies, often based on real life incidents, to illustrate useful management skills or how to apply management theory to a particular situation. Included are plentiful, clear explanations, examples, and practice exercises, as well as a glossary and an index.

Learn Library Management is one of nine study guides in the Library Education Series. Please see the back of this book for a complete listing, or visit www.totalrecallpress.com for more information.

Bob Pymm has worked in libraries and related cultural institutions for many years. He has also taught in the subject areas of archives, libraries, and management for the past 20 years and is currently a lecturer at Charles Sturt University in Australia. His teaching interests focus on the management of libraries and archives and on the impact of the digital formats on collection development.

Damon Hickey comes from a family of North American (U.S. and Canadian) academic librarians (mother, sister, daughter, son-in-law), and humorously claims to have worked in academic libraries since before he was born. He has been a college library administrator for more than 30 years and currently serves as Director of Libraries at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio.
