Considering how hard people work for the majority of their lives with an eye towards retiring, it's surprising to find that many give little thought to actually funding their retirement. In You've Earned It, Don't Lose It: Mistakes You Can't Afford to Make When You Retire, financial advisor Suze Orman addresses this sad fact and "goes beyond the usual financial primer to describe how to safeguard your financial future." A specialist in retirement issues and a Certified Financial Planner, Orman knows her stuff, and she shares it in a straightforward manner that's especially helpful for those new to navigating the often-confusing course of retirement planning. Beginning with an overview of investment advice and what to look for in an investment counselor, Orman moves on to eight chapters filled with financial planning wisdom--offering focused discussions of trusts vs. wills, long-term care insurance, early retirement, durable power of attorney, estate taxes and probate costs, minimizing your expenses/maximizing your income, joint and survivor benefits, and a successful retirement. Also included are resource lists, handy quick tips, informative graphs, and personal accounts, making this an invaluable tool in planning for one of the most important turning points in your life.

5 out of 5 stars Suze Makes It EZ.......2006-06-07

I first read Suze Orman's philosophies on taking charge of your finances in 1999 and she struck enough of a chord in me that I am now in a different place wrt my money than I was then.

And, I'm closer to retirement and possibly an early one (51), if I can afford it. In any case, I need to evaluate all my options and once again, she helped me get there quickly (Chapter 6 Early Retirement).

She's also convinced me that a Trust is the way to go, so that's the next step. I also made a multi tab spreadsheet of all the tables she references throughout and now have a pretty good snapshot of my net worth.

Her discussions are very numbers-based, but the personal anecdotes woven throughout each chapter really drove the messages and kept it from being too dry.

Her earlier books emphasize Long Term Care insurance, as does this one. I am not a big believer in lots of insurance, but that's one of the expense items we have to keep in.

Practical, no-nonsense, must-read financial advice...couldn't put it down once I started.

                          Book Description

Richard James Oglesby is best known for introducing the rail-splitter image into Abraham Lincoln's successful presidential campaign of 1860, and in many ways his career ran parallel to Honest Abe's. This biography of the three-time governor of Illinois offers the first detailed view of a key figure in the great changes that swept Illinois and the country from the Jacksonian era through the Gilded Age.

Like Lincoln, Oglesby was born in Kentucky and spent most of his youth in central Illinois, apprenticing as a lawyer in Springfield and standing for election to the Illinois legislature, Congress, and U.S. Senate. Oglesby participated in the battles of Cerro Gordo and Vera Cruz during the Mexican-American War and made a small fortune in the gold rush of 1849. A superlative speaker, he ran unsuccessfully for Congress in a campaign that featured the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, then was elected to the Illinois senate as Lincoln was being elected president.

When the Civil War came, Oglesby resigned his senate seat to lead a regiment of the Union Army. Critically wounded at the Battle of Corinth, he was promoted to major general before resigning his commission to run successfully for governor of Illinois. Oglesby was at Lincoln's deathbed and led the effort to build the sixteenth president's tomb in Springfield, delivering the major oration at its dedication. In the postwar years, Oglesby drew on his popularity, his association with the martyred Lincoln, and his extraordinary stump-speaking skills to rescue the Illinois Republican Party in a time of political crisis. In his third term as governor, Oglesby faced massive labor unrest in the aftermath of the Haymarket affair.

A mature and thoughtful biography, Lincoln's Rail-Splitter chronicles Oglesby's pivotal contribution to American political life while also providing a sensitive portrait of this able, energetic man.

                              Book Description

In Who They Were, Dr. Robert C. Shaler, the man who directed the largest and most groundbreaking forensic DNA investigation in U.S. history, tells with poignant clarity and refreshing honesty the story behind the relentless effort to identify the 2,749 victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center.

No part of the investigation into the 9/11 attacks has taken as long or been less discussed than the daunting task of identifying the victims -- and the hijackers -- from the remains in the rubble of Ground Zero. In Who They Were, Dr. Robert C. Shaler, former director of the Forensic Biology Department at the New York City Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, tells the inside story of the relentless process of DNA identification and depicts the victories and frustrations that he and his team of scientists experienced during more than three years of grueling work.

On September 11, 2001, New York City was unprepared for the mass-fatality event that occurred at the World Trade Center. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner had to completely reconfigure itself to process and identify the nearly 20,000 remains that would eventually come through its doors. Facing an astonishing array of obstacles -- from political infighting and an overwhelming bureaucracy to the nearly insurmountable task of corralling personnel and supplies to handle the work -- Shaler and his team quickly established an unprecedented network of cooperation among public agencies and private labs doing cutting-edge research.

More than a story of innovative science at the frontiers of human knowledge, Who They Were also tells the very human story of how Dr. Shaler and his staff forged important and lasting bonds with the families of those who were lost. He shares the agony of mistakes made in the chaos and unintended misidentifications resulting in the excruciating difficulty of having to retrieve remains from families of the lost.

Finally, Dr. Shaler shares how he and the dedicated team of scientists who gave up more than three years of their lives when the rest of the world had moved on had to face the limits of science in dealing with the appalling level of destruction at Ground Zero and concede that no more victims would be sent home to their families. As of April 2005, when the process was suspended, only 1,592 out of the 2,749 who died on that fateful day had been identified.

With compelling prose and insight, Who They Were reveals the previously untold stories of the scientists determined to bring closure to devastated families in the wake of America's largest disaster.

"In Who They Were, Dr. Once again, stalwart Free Press comes through with another incredibly in-depth, in fact slightly overlong, inquiry into recent history. In fact, given the subtance of the investigation, and its current limbo, this isn't really history at all, but reather current events of the most pressing nature. Who was it said that reading such and such a book was like holding lightning in your hands? Reading this book is like reading human blood.

Dr. Shaler gives us a no hold barred accout of what it was like trying to deal with the innumerable scraps of human remains found at the site of the Weorld Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001, in New York, and in the days, weeks and even months afterwards. Scientists and doctors, some who had never spoken to each other before, strangers, and some who were outright enemies, found themselves standing shoulder to shoulder trying to use forensics to fight back, fight against prejudice, fight against violence and terror and fight against the cloud of uncertainty by trying to match easch scrap, be it of brain or liver, with an actual human being believed to have died in the attacks.

He even describes the chill with which his team came to understand that, even among the morass of human material, some of these body parts were probably those of the hijackers as well.

It's not all high science either. Dr. Shaler has the vocabulary of an average New Yorker, and he is given to a descriptive obscenity when the drama of his story calls for it. '"Don't tell me we f--ked up the identification!" I said' is a typical comeback from him. But in general, the science is paramount and it helps us understand the complexity of the work involved. By and by the forensics scientists found themselves invited to the funerals of the vitims they had matched, through DNA or otherwise. The families were grateful. There must be a primitive urge to want to preserve the scraps of your own loved one's bodies, even miniscule ones, for there were funerals for mere fingers. Reminds me of the the way Catholic churches in my youth were erected around mere "relics" embedded in the tabernacles. Dr. Shaler's writing is simple and moving on such occasions, as though Hemingway had willed his genes to a top scientist and bureaucrat:

"We stood around the grave site and waited. Soon, the bagpipers began playing and there was a short ceremony. The sun was shining and it was warm. I felt like I belonged."

3 out of 5 stars Interesting so far.......2006-03-15

I just started reading, but so far I'm enjoying this very easy read.

                              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-12-31

This book is a factual first hand account of Dr. Shaler's experience. The book contains detailed descriptions of the complete identification process from 911. I did enjoy learning about forensics. It also made me very proud to learn how the people in government handled this situation.
The book includes the feelings and emotions from the long term commitment to assist with the critical identification process.

Al Gore is the most popular politician in America today. Having lost the controversial 2000 election, he has come back into public life as visionary, underdog, environmentalist, and Oscar-winner. This book shares his voice and his vision with readers across America and around the world.

Al Gore on Running in 2008 "I am not thinking about being a presidential candidate. But yes, it's true, I have not ruled it out for all time. I see no necessity to do that."

Al Gore on the Environment "The largest polluters close their ears and spend millions of dollars a year trying to intentionally confuse people into thinking global warming isn't real."

Al Gore on Our Failure to Prevent 9/11 "On September 11 the FBI had one agent assigned to monitor Al Qaeda and protect us against Osama bin Laden. I found that absolutely incredible."

Al Gore on George W. Bush and Iraq "George W. Bush betrayed this country! He played on our fears. He took America on an ill-conceived foreign adventure dangerous to our troops, an adventure preordained and planned before 9/11 ever took place."

A handy and insightful overview of everything Gore-ish. Neatly organized into various topics: climate crisis; the 2000 Presidential race; Hollywood; technology; the media; George Bush's Reign of Lies, Terror, and Fear; Running for President Again; and others. Very readable, very lively, very engaging, and not at all ponderous or preachy. Editor Katovsky's introduction gets to the heart of the matter: Here's a guy, Gore, who won the popular vote in 2000; and but for the Supreme Court's dubious intervention, we would now have a different leader in office. Oh, what might have been! Gore has evolved since that debacle, and we gain a sense of his unofficial statesman-like influence on American political culture--in fact, most of the quotes post-date 2000 and are very up-to-date. The book is extremely timely right now: lots of folks have been mobilizing into a "draft Gore" movement. Even if that movement ultimately fails, this book will stand as a lasting testimony to the road not taken. That's not necessarily a reason for despair but, rather, an occasion to see that the march of history is not pre-scripted or written in stone.
