An introduction to simple business diagramming. .......2006-04-14
The book's objective: "An exploration of core diagrams, and how they can be used effectively in business".
What the book tells you: Fourteen core diagrams, what they are, how to use them. They are all familiar diagrams that an average user will find it easy to understand. Most, if not all, of the diagrams are standard textbook presentations. I see nothing new from this book.
What the book does not tell you: Non-core diagrams. I bought this book expected to discover some fancy diagrams to use in my business presentations. The kinds that consultants are found of using to justify their horrendous fees. But none of that is present in this book.
Terribly denying of R-Mind/totality, Poorly written, & Crucial Skill, grrr.......2006-03-04
This book is written by someone who is unshakeably certain that R-Mind ( right-hemisphere-dominant mind ) does not exist,
& cannot exist,
& who discounts the split-brain-person results & discoveries of the past decades
( read "The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" ( Betty Edwards Ph.D ) to know-about some of it, but
WORK-THROUGH the book to *understand* the fundamental difference between R-Mind knowing and L-Mind knowing, by *experiencing* it ). . .
To quote the falsity
~. . .how the two halves of the brain can be seen, METAPHORICALLY[emphasis-mine], as handling information in opposite ways, either verbally or visually.
Although there is little scientific evidence for such a claim. . .~
Baloney. Experience it: nearly anyone can
( hell, even the ultra-autistic "Nadya", IIR-her-name-C, was R-Mind-mode
until that was broken from her by training, to satisfy her parents, want for a More Normal autistic child. . . )
Anyways, he's so linear/language/"logic" centred that he *cannot* notice how unclear he is being in his writing,
or that is the charitable assessment, perhaps. . .
However. . .
Diagramming is one of the *core* skills needed by any competent mind, nowadays.
The book "The Power of the 2x2 Matrix" is another core-skill book
( related to diagramming, having-to-do-with schema, and perceiving/knowing ).
"Presenting to Win" is another core-skill book.
Saxon Math books are another.
"The Feiner Points of Leadership" ( Feiner ) is another.
"The Definitive Business Plan" ( Stutely ) is another.
UNfortunately, I don't know any better diagramming-competence book,
so it's stuck in the NEED category, until I can get a good alternative.
If you know of a better one, or can write one yourself, get the info here, or do it!

Good diagrams for business discussions.......2004-07-20
I was searching for a good framework for problem solving and decided to get this book. Content-wise the author has much to cover with 14 core diagrams. He has categorised all this 14 diagrams under several business themes such as: Managing Change, Control, Relationships, Managing Flow etc etc.
I really like the Influence Diagram as it provides a fresh perspective to a Strategic Project I handled before.
However the publisher seems to like really long paragraphs with little spacing. The published date is 2000 but I feel this style of writing was more to early 1800s where TV has yet to be invented.
Hope the author would try to upgrade and review the content with perhaps a different publisher. There is another similiar book of this nature which is the "The Thinker's Toolkit". Happy Diagramming.
Extraordinary tool for writers and analysts.......2001-08-16
As an IT consultant I do a lot of writing and create a lot of graphics to reinforce my words. Before discovering this gem my primary graphics reference was Information Graphics by Robert L. Harris, which is a comprehensive encyclopedia of technical graphics. Thinking Visually will not replace that book, but will augment it because this book is more of a how-to and is focused on 14 basic diagrams that I find myself using in one variation or another in nearly every project. The book is divided into three parts: (1) Introduction to Diagramming, which is among the best descriptions of diagramming and how to approach it that I've had the pleasure of reading; (2) APplying the Core Diagrams, and (3) Introduction to Diagramming, which is an extension of Part 1 that wraps up the book with excellent advice.
Part 2 is the heart of the book. The core Diagrams are divided into six groups: (1) MAPPING THE BUSINESS (System Maps, Mind Maps), (2) RELATIONSHIP AND INFLUENCE (Relationship, Tree, Influence), (3) CONTROL IN BUSINESS (Input/Output, Control), (4) CAUSATION (Multiple Cause, Fishbone [also called Ishikawa], Sign), (5) CHANGE (Force-field, Window), (6) FLOW (Flow, Ring).
Many of the diagrams have multiple instances. For example, flow diagrams can take the form of flow process, blocks, algorithms (flow charts) or network diagrams. Likewise, window diagrams take on many different forms, including strength/weakness/opportunity/threat (SWOT), quad matrices (such as the "Boston Matrix"). This extends the 14 core diagrams into many more because of the variations, with all of the major ones discussed in this book.
What I especially like is the way the author presents each diagram: overview of the diagram, business application, business purpose and summary and conventions. When variations are discussed, such as a critical path network diagram derived from a flow, the same treatment is given.
As I read through this book familiarizing myself with these basic tools I discovered that my primary software tool, Visio, contained stencil sets for many of these diagrams, including Mind Mapping, SWOT Fishbone and many more. I also liked the final part of the book because it contains valuable advice on managing information with the core diagrams - especially developing diagrams that convey information instead of resulting in information overload. The chapter on diagramming theory and some of its pitfalls was also excellent. Finally, Appendices A and B, only two pages, are incredibly useful because they map the core diagrams to themes (Appendix A) and to management activity (Appendix B). These make selecting the right tool for the right job easy, and their inclusion is a nice touch of added value.
I cannot praise this book highly enough. It has quickly become one of my most valuable tools and has also enlightened me on a number of issues and factors related to effectively selecting and using diagrams. It merits 5 stars!
Excellent reference to graphical representation.......2001-03-03
This is an excellent book of templates for graphical visulization of complex information. I think that this book belongs right on the bookshelf of anyone who uses line graphics for research and business...right next to Tufte's classics. Highly recommended.

sorprendentemente malo.......2003-11-01
después de intentar utilizar este diccionario decenas y decenas de veces para algo útil, se ha convertido en un mero elemento decorativo dentro de mi despacho... es el típico diccionario que compras pensando que te va a salvar la vida, pero finalmente después de recurrir a él con todo tipo de términos y no encontrar ninguna ayuda, te das cuenta del dinero que has perdido... además, no entiendo cómo se puede hacer un diccionario tan grande y con tantos términos y no incluir absolutamente ninguna explicación de ningún término... sólo vienen palabras traducidas sin ningunas notas o descripciones, lo cual obviamente hace falta en algunas ocasiones para entender bien un término... el estilo de presentar las palabras es muy poco profesional y se agrupan de una forma que parece lógica hasta que utilizas el diccionario varias veces y ves que simplemente no funciona... creo que es el diccionario que más me ha dececpcionado de todos los que he comprado... estarías mucho mejor comprando el diccionario jurídico de alcaraz o recurriendo al internet...

Not a necessity, but a solid addition.......2000-05-24
This compilation of primary source materials is arranged inchronological chapters, with the table of contents acting as anoutline of what is to come. An excellent introduction creates a vivid context for the period. Many pieces are not in their entirety, but excerpted. Holzer's vibrant writing is a fascinating mix of biography and political history that provides setup and commentary for each selection to put the piece in context. A wide range of samples includes poems, letters, and speeches (both famous and lesser known). The editor's authority of and admiration for his subject is evident and the volume is well arranged; unfortunately, some poor editing choices detract from the text. Photos are abundant, well-selected, and well-placed; however, in two instances the same picture was obviously cropped and reused with a different caption. Photo credits are inconsistent. Sometimes they appear under the picture, sometimes they don't. A complete list of photo credits appears at the end. Including the original captions along with the page numbers would have been a nice touch. Because this is not the first book one would start with if one were to do a report on Lincoln, a list of recommended books would have been a welcome addition. According to the credits, Holzer only consulted one source for this book. While he is the author of 14 books (8 about Lincoln), one would think he would mention other sources - even his own. An incredibly detailed chronology will thrill teachers struggling with curriculum frameworks. Not a necessity, but a solid addition to collections where there is a demand for presidential biography, political/government history, or civil rights information.

A wise,gentle book about self-transformation through living........1998-06-20
I came to this book after a period of struggle and loss. Auw's definition of survivor includes anyone who prevails over life's traumas and tragedies. This is no superficial new age "self-help" book; it is a profound meditation on the possibilities of the transformation of a human life. Auw writes clearly, drawing from a lifetime of his own experiences, and what he has learned from his clients through counseling. He articulates "life's lessons" in a way that invites the reader to consider what we have learned to resist and dismiss ... that loss may be opportunity, and failure a message; that those of us in the "helping" professions must first of all be honest about our motives, and allow for our own humanity. In his discussion of fear and resistance, Auw points our that after close self-scrutiny, we may learn that the signal BEWARE that drives us reactively may be reframed as BE AWARE. These Zen-like suggestions sparkle in the mind and create courage. I would recommend this deceptively simple book to anyone who has begun an assessment of life with fairly open eyes. Savor this book - one small chapter a day will fill you up!

Andre Auw has the rare understanding of what makes excellent therapy. As clinicians we too often rely on the tricks of cognitive behaviior approaches, too scared to really engage with our clients.

The soul of a gentle man.......2000-03-16
Andre Auw was my professor in graduate school (Psychology of Human Relations). I have never forgotten his gentle wisdom. he has left a life long impression on me. Now his latest work, Gift of Wounding, reafirms the notion that Peak experiences need not always be positive. He is a gifted writer, an empathetic and intuitive practitioner. I will certainly require my Humanistic Psychology Classes to read this work.

Buy this book! Why? Because it contains wisdom that touches your life, told in a gentle penetrating way that moves you to action. I have known Andre Auw for 7 years as a client and now as a friend. He has shared his wisdom and energy to bring me through several crisis as: the death of my spouse of 37 years, the death of my mother, the ensuing lawsuits brought about by a powerful political step-brother, two difficult significant other relationships, and others. All through this, his patient and loving presence showed me the way to call forth our inherent resources to face these situations. What surprises me is that he is able to put all of this into a book through well chosen stories and pithy concluding remarks to each. Highly recommended.

Andre Auw speaks directly to the soul's struggle and it's capacity to triumph. He invites us to turn difficult life situations into challenge: seeking and finding greater resouce within ourselves. And through his stories, he offers us models, those who have found ways to turn suffering into compassion and service to others. The pages of Andre Auw's book are alive with his elder wisdom and presence bringing us home again into our heart.

Andre Auw is a gifted writer and counselor. I found the thematic chapters a mosaic of simple but profound practical wisdom with gentle nudges towards personal healing. The book is easy to read with a great aftertaste. As a counselor of many years, I found the book not only inspiring but delightful - a great gift.

Description:
This study investigates how divorce followed by single parenthood undermines the long-term physical health of rural mothers using four waves of survey data collected in Iowa, USA from 336 married and 80 divorced mothers during a 10-year period. Findings generally support the hypothesized pathways in that single-parenthood creates financial difficulties for rural mothers. Furthermore, this financial adversity is linked to self-assessed physical health trajectories that then contribute to change in morbidity. This reflects the developmental course of morbidity during the middle years. Methodologically, this extends existing research on the association between women's marital status and well being by explicitly examining individual trajectories of change in family financial strain and physical health, as well as by examining the dynamic association between both during the middle years.
