Book Description
No one in Cape May Court House, New Jersey, was surprised when Eric Thomas, a popular young local doctor, sued the Ford Motor Company for the wrongful death of his pregnant wife, Tracy. After all, the accident they were involved in was minor, and they were driving a big, powerful Explorer, a family vehicle. Nevertheless, Tracy died in the accident, leaving behind not just her husband but also her cherished young daughter, Alix, whom Eric Thomas would have to raise alone, with the help of Tracy's devoted parents, Doris and Donald Rose.
Backed by the medical examiner's findings, Dr. Thomas's lawsuit claimed that the Explorer's air bag inflated improperly, causing injuries that resulted in Tracy's suffocation. But what starts out as a simple product-liability case rapidly evolves into something altogether different when, after an exhaustive investigation, Ford alleges that Tracy Thomas died not from a defective air bag, but as the result of manual strangulation. Before long, the defendant, the giant automaker Ford, becomes a de facto prosecutor and plaintiff Eric Thomas, who was a passenger in the Explorer, stands accused of the murder of his wife.
Investigative journalist Lawrence Schiller, bestselling author of American Tragedy and Perfect Murder, Perfect Town, now turns his unflinching eye on this unusual case and, as only he can, creates a page-turning suspense story and a gripping legal thriller. Taking us behind the scenes, Schiller exposes the tactics used by the attorneys on both sides of this civil suit and uncovers the lie that eventually torpedoes one party's case.
Was Tracy Thomas killed in a car accident, or was the accident a cover-up for her murder at the hands of her ambitious young husband? In Cape May Court House, Lawrence Schiller gives you more than enough evidence to be judge and jury.

Straigtforward.......2007-07-31
I read this book in about a day. I literally could not put it down. It was straightforward, which I appreciate. The subject matter and the manner in which the case progressed are intriguing enough that the author wisely let the story tell itself. If you like law, you'll like this book.
Unbelievably boring.......2007-07-20
I've had this book for over a year and just now finished it, after the 3rd time trying to read it. It is just so tedious, 90% courtroom dialogue, which is great if you want to fall asleep.
a good read.......2006-01-24
I was interested as CMCH was very near where we summered as kids. Also the principle lawyer in the story grew up next door to my sister in Philadelphia. I read the book in 2 days. The ending was a little disappointing since they never nailed the guy on criminal charges. He is still practicing in CMCH. I took a ride past "Sunshine Dentistry" today. It was great though reading about a product liability lawyer taking a 400K bath. I would like to know if the product liability lawyer sued Thomas since he lied to him, and if the deceased's parents sued Thomas and what was the outcome. I don't think anyone who would read this book would go to him to have teeth worked on. Stranger than fiction would be my comment.
Rather Disappointing.......2004-02-18
I was not overly impressed with the book. There were way too many newspaper clippings strung together. Also, the story was very very predictable, and Schiller did not do enough to create some intrigue or analysis. That said the book was a good summary of what happened. Schiller distilled a lot of complicated information. As long as the reader recognizes that this is a summary of what happened, and not much else, then it's an ok read.
A lot of hype.......2003-11-18
I actually go to this dentist and was totally clueless about the whole case since I moved into the area not too long ago. I am an avid reader of crime drama and was excited to read a book that hits very close to home.
This is one of the dryest books that I have ever read. The first chapter was pretty good, but then it's just blah blah blah. It took me almost 2 weeks to finish it, when I usually finish a book like this in a day or two.
I have read other books by this author, but this one just doesn't match up to his other works.

A sad legal twist.......2006-12-02
Cape May Courthouse: A Death in the Night. Cape. Until a minor traffic accident in a snowstorm one evening in Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey, not many people had ever heard of Tracy and Eric Thomas. Lawrence Schiller recounts this tragedy in light of legal twists that tossed Eric Thomas into a wrongful death action at the helm of media frenzy. While Cape May Courthouse does a good job detailing the nuts and bolts of the legal proceedings, it is, at times, dense with legal jargon. If you are though, as I am, a fan of All Things Legal, you may enjoy this true crime book.
Interesting, but only for some..........2006-06-19
This book contained an interesting look into our legal system, and all the wrangling that goes on between lawyers in a high-profile lawsuit. I found that the book was bogged down with details occaisionally, and thus dragged a bit. However, if you're intrigued by the legal system, you'll enjoy this book. If you're looking for closure, you won't find it here, as the book forces you to make the final decision for yourself.
Fascinating about the legal system - does not aid the reasons one gets away in a book.......2005-10-10
The book gives an excellent insight into the machinations and interactions of lawyers and the legal system. But the lack of a resolution detracts from the reason one escapes into books for entertainment. After reading about the inconsistencies in other reviews and editorials about the book, since I wondered if any of it was based on some facts, (I drive an Explorer, previous year of the one in the book) that I feel my car is safe. I just felt such a let down at the end. It tends to keep you interested that something "juicy" will happen and then your back to the dry legal interactions. So I mainly found this an entertaining form of education.
Eye Opener Into Our Broken Legal System.......2005-06-28
This book kept me up late at night because I couldn't put it down. At first, it seemed obvious that the husband committed murder. But deeper into the book, one begins to wonder what really happened. Highly qualified experts disagreed with each other, which was a major point brought out by the prosecution. If experts can't agree, they said, how does the prosecution go forward? What fascinated me most was the detailed look at both the legal system and the medical system. The author is extremely careful to list all of his sources, quoting newspaper articles when needed, to avoid a slander lawsuit. He also notes statements made by the people he interviewed, especially when they are contradicting statements by lawyers, media, the police, etc.
Location, Location, Location!.......2005-03-29
Yes, Schiller has written an interesting insight into how lawyers work, and one must admire his diligence and attention to the details of the legal machine. However, other details are important, for instance, the practicalities of getting from Point A to Point B. In this book, Schiller has the victim's parents driving quite often from Cape Cod to Cape May. This is not a 2-hour jaunt in the country. Anyone who's ever tried to get on or off either Cape in tourist season can tell you that. He's also got said parents making the trip from Cape to Cape in 6 hours. Six hours!? I live 2 hours north of Cape May and it takes us EIGHT hours to get to Truro, on Cape Cod! Were these people flying? Petty detail? Perhaps. But when I find mistakes like this, I have to wonder what mistakes the author has made that I haven't caught, and that makes me doubt his or her attention to detail and common sense. And I still don't know if this is a novel created in Mr. Schiller's mind or his accounting of a true-life event (of which I've never heard, by the way).

From the supplier: New Jersey announced workers' compensation insurance premium rates for 1997 that are 11.2% less than 1996. The rate decrease, which resulted in part from an 8.5% reduction in workers' compensation rates, will save employers about $218 million. New Jersey officials credited improved workplace safety programs, reductions in medical costs through the use of managed care organizations, and an improved employment for creating the cost savings.

From the supplier: Both New Jersey and Virginia will hold gubernatorial elections in Nov 1997. New Jersey Republican incumbent Christine Todd Whitman will probably win reelection, but she has alienated many conservative voters with her support for partial birth abortion and her reluctance to cut state spending. Popular Virginia Republican Gov George Allen is constitutionally barred from seeking reelection. Republican candidate Jim Gilmore espouses Allen's policies but lacks his style and charisma. Democratic candidate Don Beyer has a good reputation and more public presence than Gilmore, but lacks substance.

Review of "The Inner World of Abraham Lincoln".......2007-08-29
A very good read, focusing on Lincoln's depression and how it affected his life and presidency. Being a clinical psychologist who utilizes CBT for the treatment of depression, it was a bit too psychodynamic for my taste, however.
A solid account anchored in superb research.......2007-08-23
One of the finest Lincoln scholars provides an excellent examination of Lincoln's many-faceted personality. Burlingame consulted a wide variety of information sources and used them well. His thoroughly documents his narrative.
Shoddy.......2004-04-12
I have been studying Abraham Lincoln for nearly 40 years. Burlingame is inaccurate in many of his statements about Lincoln and Mary Lincoln in particular and does not present all of the information about both of them. Possibly his most faulty act is using William Herndon's information about Lincoln and Mary Lincoln. Herndon and Mary Lincoln hated each other. After Lincoln passed away, Herndon may have very well said things about Lincoln and her to hurt, degrade and disgrace Mary Lincoln. Herndon is NOT to be trusted to be accurate much of the time. Other very poor Lincoln authors are Weik, Sandburg, Gore Vidal, Lerone Bennett, Jr., Thomas DiLorenzo, Vincent Harding and Barbara Fields. Their accuracy, interpretations and images are usually wrong and at times even bizarre. If you want to read professionally researched, much more accurate material about Lincoln, read books by David Herbert Donald, Stephen Oates, Frank Williams, Mark Neely, Jr., Edward Steers, Jr. and Allen Guelzo.
WOW - This will blow your mind!.......2004-02-07
The organization of this book is not presented in a chronological time scale as most books are. Instead, the author breaks up facets of Lincoln's emotions and personality traits, and then takes us through his whole life, examining the influence of each facet. Only thinking in this manner do I clearly imagine myself in his shoes, feeling what he felt, and in awe of the strength required to break the rebellion, and provide a land where each man's hand could feed that own man's face.
A anecdote-rich study of a tortured man.......2003-06-15
Burlingame's book is misnamed in my view - it is not `The Inner World' as much as how Lincoln reacted to the outer world. The reader is left to judge ultimately for himself what Lincoln thought. This is a testament to Burlingame's restraint as a historian. He could have pounded away at all sorts of psychological concepts and explanations, but he does'nt Instead, except for some references to Carl Jung in the beginning of the book and a sprikling of psychological explanations throughout the chapters, he presents in a matter-of-fact way Lincoln's relationships with his wife, his sons, his generals, and discusses his temper, ambition, and parenting, with some, but not excessive, `patient on the couch' pontificating.
The longest, and by far the most powerful, chapter is on Lincoln's marriage. If only half, or even a quarter of what Burlingame recounts was true, then the potato-throwing, screaming, spendthrift Mary Lincoln must have been the worst wife on earth. In Springfield, Lincoln would often rush out the backdoor during Mary's `episodes' - whisking his sons up with him and spending the night in his office, on a couch specially installed that was long enough to handle his tall frame. He was often beaten - a broom being Mary's weapon of choice. My God, the poor man needed his own Emancipation Proclamation!
The chapter on Lincoln's depression details how low this man could get. It was probably his Gloomy Gus outlook that saved Lincoln from completely cracking up; only a person familiar with depression and how to go on under difficult circumstances could withstand the strain of a war that killed 628,000 fellow citizens in four years. I am not a Lincoln scholar so I can't testify to the veracity of all that is in this book. But, reading it will provide you with a sense of how many trials this strange, ambitious, and great man endured - at home and in politics.
