Book Description
Great advertising and design can make the world stop and think. It can make people listen. And, sometimes it can even change a person's life. One Show Annual celebrates all of the qualities that go into making a successful ad campaign or design. Considered by many to be the benchmark in advertising annuals, this year's edition features the very best work from around the world from the 2004 One Show and One Show Design contests. In these pages there are more than 1,500 four-color images from the finalists and winning entries, insider perspectives from the Gold Pencil winners, a spotlight on the Client of the Year, the college competition winners, and a look into the judging process with a Judge's Choice section. Lavishly produced with full-color throughout, this is the must-have annual for creatives, clients, students, and anyone interested in advertising and design. Categories covered include print, design, integrated branding, television, and radio.
Customer Reviews:
The "pop culture engineer" work makes this worth buying........2006-01-14
The one show annual is widely regarded as 'the best of the best' in creative advertising. That said, this edition was a particularly good annual featuring some great work for playstation by tbwa paris, and the world famous 'cog' spot for honda by wieden + kennedy london. However, I was expecting to see all this in the annual. For me, the campaign that made this annual worth the purchase was a campaign that simply leapt off of its unassuming 514th page. Ironically enough, this advertising campaign was about advertising, directed at young people interested in the creative side of the business. As someone that currently works as a creative, it struck a particular chord with me.
For starters, the colors, font treatment, and stylish design of this campaign cuts through the other work in this annual like a well-sharpened sushi knife. Art directed by Lee Jennings, the ads all emphasize the headline "become a pop-culture engineer" a line that for me, quickly gets to the heart of what this business is all about.
Written by Ian Fairbrother, each headline is followed by insightful prose about the biz that really reminds us why we all got into creative advertising in the first place. The ads honestly made me a bit emotional when I first read them, a pretty remarkable thing for a print ad, but yet the one thing we all aspire our work to do.
Really, I am amazed that the campaign hasn't received more attention globally in the past year, though who knows what the future holds. Either way, I am sure we will see more in years to come from Fairbrother and Jennings. I know that the next time they're in the One Show, I'll be buying a copy.

Book Description
The One Show Annual continues to be the most far-reaching collection of today’s creative advertising, and the one that sets the industry standard. Beautifully produced, big (555 pages) and in full color, it showcases all the winners from advertising’s most prestigious international award shows. This year, Volume 25 features three important and fabulous new elements: the “Innovative Marketing” category honors innovative work and untraditional thinking and branding. The “Patrick Kelly Scholarship” recognizes the creative daring of the next generation. And the “Advertiser of the Year” celebrates the company that has shown the most groundbreaking work. The competition categories include Print, Design, Integrated Branding, Television, and Radio.
Customer Reviews:
Good to know what advertising was like before Ian Fairbrother........2006-04-19
This annual contains your regular assortment of ads, ads, and more ads. Oh, there's a little design in there also. But to me, this annual is much more pertinent for historical purposes. This volume of the One Show, is a good marker in time for where the advertising industry was before Ian Fairbrother. What is considered 'ground-breaking' in this edition (yeah right, mini cooper) hardly holds a candle to the genius that Fairbrother writes only a year later.
Someone great once said, "We can't know where we're going if we don't know where we've been."
The name of that person? You guessed it. Ian Fairbrother

Dear One Show, Leave out Fairbrother, leave out your fan base........2006-04-19
They call this thing "the premiere international advertising award show." They say it "sets the industry standard for creative excellence with categories including print, television radio, outdoor, innovative media and marketing, and integrated branding." Well I say to them, "If that's so, where the hell is Ian Fairbrother's work!?!?!"
You may remember Fairbrother from last year's annual, page number: 514. Though not as widely known as 'cog' (they have a pr team he doesn't), his work inspired and expanded the mind of agency executives and creatives everywhere. Fairbrother's work made us laugh, it made us cry, it reminded us what it's like to be human. Does any work in the One Show, Vol 27 do that for us in this annual? Sadly, no.
I bought this annual because I wanted to see more from the brilliant copywriter that stole my heart and my mind in issue 26. I bought it because I wanted to believe in advertising again. But I was ultimately and tragically disappointed.
So if you're looking for Fairbrother, purchase not this book. Instead, look to the sun. Yes, up, up, up to the very brightest spot on that great burning star of ours. Stare at it nakedly. Only then will you see him, The Copywriter, the only one with the power to save this industry from its inevitable doom.
God help us in Volume 28... Fairbrother help us...

Not as good as in recent years.......2002-11-14
The work in this year's edition doesn't compare to earlier One Shows. More often, I found myself looking at the same ads/ideas/campaigns over and over, page after page.
For the investment, I was sorely disappointed. I'd suggest skipping this one and waiting 'till next year. Better yet, just ask to borrow a friend's for the weekend. That's about as much time as you'll need to spend going through it, given the scant amount of inspiring work it contains.

Great legal overview .......2005-07-21
I really like the book as it gives you a great and easy to understand overview about the legal issues involved into starting your own company.
It is well structured and written which makes it easy to find specific topics quickly.
I was a little worried before ordering it that it might be difficult to understand (as it was written by lawers...) but that was not at all the case.
Book Description
This series covers the federal, state, and local regulations imposed on small businesses, with concise, friendly and up-to-the-minute advice on each critical step of starting your own business.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-12-10
This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.
I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.
My favorite chapters were:
1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need
The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.
I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.
Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.
I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.
When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

How to Start a Business in Massachusetts.......2000-07-27
This is a great guide if starting a business is your dream or your current task. It covers, in brief, most of the questions I had. It also contains sample forms, addresses for obtaining forms, checklists... in short, more than you are likely to need. O'Neill and Warda also provide guidance for agencies to contact and additional books to read. The fact that it is written for one state is reassuring. This is not EVERYTHING you need to know, but it is a starting place for the nearly overwhelming number of things a new business owner needs to consider. It also helps the novice entrepreneur organize the process. I found this guide very helpful.

Customer Reviews:
This book is excellent - highly recommended.......2006-01-08
There are a lot of very useful details in this book. These details are very important, for the persons that "know" (or believe that they know) what is operational risk.
Dimitris Chorafas is a very experienced person. Since 1961, he has advised financial institutions and industrial corporations in strategic planning, risk management, computers and communications systems, and internal controls. Graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of Paris, and the Technical University of Athens
Financial institutions which have sought his assistance include the Union Bank of Switzerland, Bank Vontobel, CEDEL, the Bank of Scotland, Credit Agricole, Österreichische Länderbank (Bank Austria), First Austrian Bank, Commerzbank, Dresdner Bank, Mid-Med Bank, Demir Bank, Banca Nazionale dell'Agricoltura, Istituto Bancario Italiano, Credito Commerciale and Banca Provinciale Lombarda.
Among multinational corporations Dr Chorafas has worked as consultant to top management, are: General Electric-Bull, Univac, Honeywell, Digital Equipment Corp, Olivetti, Nestlé, Omega, Italcementi, Italmobiliare, AEG-Telefunken, Olympia, Osram, Antar, Pechiney, the American Management Association and host of other client firms in Europe and the United States.
Dr Chorafas has served on the faculty of the Catholic University of America and as visiting professor at Washington State University, George Washington University, University of Vermont, University of Florida, and Georgia Institute of Technology. Also, the University of Alberta, Ecole d'Etudes Industrielles de l'Université de Genève, and Technical University of Karlsruhe.
More than 6,000 banking, industrial and government executives have participated in his seminars in the United States, England, Germany, other European countries, Asia and Latin America.
Impractical and long winded diatrabe.......2004-09-09
What I wanted:
1] Definition of Operational risk
2] Basel II standard explained in easy English
3] Flowchart for how to go about dealing with it
4] Some kind of standard best practices based on his experiences
What I got
1] Operational risk is everything.
2] Basel II not explained. It seems to assume you already get it.
3] No system is presented. He argues it is all relative.
4] No best practices. Again it is all relative.
He does in fairness mention make a great deal of arguments for the need for operational risk. The problem is that anyone buying the book already understands there is a need. They are buying the book to get hints on what to do about it. I know it is all relative but as an expert he needs to take a stand and come up with some fairly universal best practices. Also he needs to realize that this is a young area and many banks are just creating their Op risk departments and need some kind of help in how to go about that. Not theory but concrete practical help.
To complicate matters his English is boorish and he uses bullets like they were going out of style. Not to sum up things like they are normally used but rather to break up run-on sentences. The sign of a well written book isn't snotty language or fancy math terms. The sign of a good book is that the readers learned something from it. I came away from this book no closer to knowing what to do about Op risk then before I bought it.

Book Description
One of the primary purposes of any model is to build intuition and generate insights. Typically, a model is developed to be able to better understand phenomena that are otherwise difficult to comprehend. Models can also help in verifying the correctness of an intuition or judgment. In spite of the fact that many educators recognize the intuition-building power of simple models, this is the first book in the field that uses the power of the basic models and principles to provide students and managers with an “intuitive understanding” of operations management.
Building Intuition: Insights From Basic Operations Management Models and Principles touches on nine fundamental models and principles, and outlines the key insights behind each one. To ensure that the volume is accurate, authoritative, accessible and well-written, the chapters are developed by leading experts in each chapter area and written with the students and managers in mind. The book’s primary purpose is to motivate and to enable readers to develop insights with respect to a number of models that are central to the study and practice of operations management.

The best book in the field.......2004-01-20
As a teacher of Ops Mgmt and former employee of digital equipment corporation where I was responsible for operations in our biggest expedition center in Europe I think this book is the best book in the world. It's lively and quick (as I'm myself) though It provides students with the knowledge they need. Regards.

A Good Text for Principles of Operations.......2000-01-27
Heizer and Redner have put together a text that covers the essentials of Operations Management. The text is easy to read, yet covers material to whatever depth the instructor wants to take the class. The cases and examples offer 'real life'situations. I would recommend this text for any Introduction (Principles) of Operations Management.
Poorly written.......1999-05-10
For a college profession thinking about choosing a text for this subject I urge you to skip this book. The book touches on many topics but does not explain them well. Examples are few and poorly explained. If a professor uses the test bank questions accompanied with this book urge the students to buy the study guide. Much of the material in the test bank questions is not covered in the text in the necessary detail if at all. A student who takes a test bank type test without the benefit of reviewing the study guide first will be severely handicapped.

Accounting practice.......1999-12-25
I have been practicing accounting for several years since receiving a BS in Accounting, and I still haven't been able to apply any of the principles in this book. Not a good book for teaching accounting students "real-life" accounting.

No new information here!.......2002-10-27
I found this book to be incomplete and in need of decent editing. I found at least 3 major recipe mistakes 1.Roman style toasts calls for 7 slices of bread cut into 28 1/2 by 2 inch pieces 2.In the recipe for meatloaf after browning the meat, you are to add wine and broth to the browning pan but there is no instruction as to what to do with the broth. 3.The braised beef talks about a roast but lists the meat ingredient as 3 lbs of beef stew meat, cut into 2 inch cubes. But what really bothered me is the lack of vegetable recipes - this is not Italian cooking!
