Book Description
This text reviews the major advances that have taken place over the past 20 years in the management of human sexual aggression. This work is intended to reflect what is known and what is not known about the most effective management practices and strategies for sexual offenders. It includes complete discussions of classification, assessment, and prediction. In addition, major controversies in the field are addressed with the goal of separating supposition from fact and myth from reality. By employing an empirical litmus test throughout, the authors are able to identify what is known; what are sound, yet empirically based, hunches; what is speculation; and what lies strictly in the realm of mythology.
Written by a forensic psychologist and a forensic nurse, the book offers a unique dual perspective. With over 1400 references, this represents an important source of every facet of the management and disposition of known sex offenders.

Provides Fundamental Information on Crime Analysis.......2001-08-07
Applied Crime Analysis is the best "How-to" book on crime analysis to date. It's user friendliness is a benefit to the often difficult topic of crime prevention and security. The authors have created a step-by-step manual for those engaging in crime analysis for the first time and those who want to learn how to correctly produce defensible crime analysis. Applied Crime Analysis brilliantly takes the reader thru the crime prevention journey of a property manager who succeeds in reducing crime at his office building. Other topics include: obtaining law enforcement data, liability, Uniform Crime Report conversion, and crime prevention for specific properties.
GREAT BOOK!!!
Incredibly, it is not boring!!!.......2001-03-10
Wow, a first in security! This book is actually quite interesting to read! It's reader friendliness made it a quick and helpful read.
Seemingly Perfect.......2001-02-21
The authors have combined technical information along with interesting case studies to make this textbook seemingly perfect. It is packed with a wealth of helpfull and pertinent information that will assist the security minded individual or corporation. I think this should be a required text for all criminal justice and criminal studies majors.
Book Description
Focusing on the most destructive fires of modern times, Nicholas Faith details the work of these investigators as they piece together causes of ignition, observe how fire spreads and smoke flows, and attempt to understand the behavior of those unlucky souls caught in the most fearsome infernos.Their work can convict arsonists or form the bases of legislation-making buildings safer for all of us.Including information about the cataclysmic conflagrations at the MGM Grand and Our Lady of the Angels School, Blaze features first hand testimonies from people whose lives have been scarred by their encounters with fire.Nicholas Faith examines the fire-fighters who risk their lives tackling the blazes, and the investigators, safety engineers, and forensic scientists who scour gutted rubble heaps in the hope of understanding mankind's most complicated ally-and its most dangerous foe.

Forensics buff.......2007-02-28
I would like pictures of the scenes to help understand. But I do recommend it. It is the first of its kind I have seen.
Good Information: Diagrams Sorely Needed.......2006-05-23
This book provides good information about fire behavior. One common theme of this book is the speed with which indoor fires spread. The rapid, sometimes nearly explosive growth of fires is a major factor in people not evacuating premises sooner. The rapid fire growth owes to the feedback effects of indoor fires. One of these effects is the flashover, a common phenomenon. Another is the "trench-hugging" effect, as exhibited by the King's Cross London subway fire. Still another is the radiative effect of a low ceiling, combined with a flammable plastic wall covering which releases burning drops onto yet-nonignited seats, as exemplified by the Stardust disco fire in Dublin, which grew from an innocuous one-seat fire to a multiple-seat, multiple-row deadly conflagration in only 2-3 minutes, and totally consuming of the interior in merely 5 minutes.
Modern interior materials, notably polyurethane, can produce vast amounts of carbon monoxide and suffocating, blinding smoke in just a minute or two. Although the author Faith does not discuss this further, the water-decomposing temperatures of HTA's help the reader understand why the magnesium-thermite incendiary bombs of WWII could not be extinguished by water. And, although the destruction of the World Trade Center on 911, of course, predates this book, the information about the One Meridian Plaza fire of 1991 helps the reader understand the former, albeit on a much smaller scale. In both cases, several floors of a high rise burned out of control, completely engulfing the floors, and could not be put out. Although the One Meridian Plaza building did not collapse, extensive cracking of rock material and the twisting of metal girders almost did cause a collapse.
A major shortcoming of this work is its lack of diagrams. It would be so much easier to follow what the author is saying about the British subway fire and the Dublin disco fire had these been provided. Hopefully, a subsequent edition of this book will rectify this situation.
Good Read.......2003-07-01
Very informative book. Needed to list more details of the actual forensics of fire and how it acts.
fire behavior - blaze the forensics of fire''.......2000-12-18
hi my name is chris j coombes and i love to red about fire behavior fire is vere dangeris and it can hurt you .if you are a firefighter you know how fire can burn fast and you have to be on the look out for a fire. we thank that fire is safe but it,s not fire can burn evere thing you have to the ground. thank you for your help chris j coombes...
Pretty good, with minor editing and proofreading errors.......2000-12-13
It was a pretty good overview of fire investigations. I was bothered by proofreading errors.
Readers of chapter 3 (p34) strained to understand how a fire could creep along a low incline rather than flame upward. They were told this was due to the "...so-called colander effect, whereby jets stick to walls." If they were imagining some sort of sieve, they were mislead. The effect which causes fluid jets to bend around gentle curves is properly called the Coanda effect, named after a hydraulics theoretician.
A few other minor errors like a "Kray-2" supercomputer mar the account, which is otherwise good reading.
I was happy to see a chapter discounting the widespread belief that crowds of people tend to panic in fires.

From the author: This paper draws upon concepts and techniques from epidemiology to examine the ability of routine activities theory to account for the risk of criminal victimization. Moving beyond the identification of risk factors for victimization, we ask how changes to causal factors might affect the risk of victimization in the general population. We find that predictors identified with more traditional methods account for the bulk of the risk, but that some are less important for understanding overall population risk because of the small numbers of people associated with them, while others are more helpful because they apply to larger numbers.

Book Description
The "Thirty-six" Strategies" are well-known to the Chinese and are frequently applied in business practices. No one can pinpoint the exact period in which the thirty-six strategies were written, nor the exact combinations of strategies that constitute the thirty-six. However, through the years, scholars have expediently adopted the thirty-six strategies as a set of common tactics used by the Chinese. Though widely known and applied by the Chinese, these "Thirty-six Strategies" are less familiar to others. Even less-known are their strong applicability to business. This book attempts to bridge the gap of understanding between the East and other cultures of the world. It seeks to provide a timely insight into the mind of the Chinese strategist. An essential read for those who wish to gasp the powerful background of rich culture, tradition and value system that involve the Chinese psyche.
Customer Reviews:
No Best Strategy at All.......2004-11-09
I do not think it is appropriate to say which strategy is better or worse. It is also too hasty to claim that business is easy to conduct. 36 strategy is in Chinese mindset and is used in daily thinking. At least this book helps people know a different strategic culture.
Interesting Asia's Overlook.......2003-08-22
If the strategies are deeply described, what is more interesting in the book is the examples. Many examples of how these strategies were implemented in Asia during the last 15 years.
Re: Do the Chinese strategize better?.......2000-12-22
It is not that Chinese strategize better; it is the fact that Chinese put down these wisdoms in text so that we can learn.
How do you know those Chinese business people are not using strategy? And do you know how much tried and failed badly. Only a few lucky ones managed to do it.
In the past, caveman age, all they need is to be strong and they can win. Later stage of the conflicts in Zhou and others, they knew that strength doesn't means all, strategies give them an edge to win.
In today, Many business people are capable of winning was due to the large vacuumed in the business world and not to forget their dedication in their work.
Now the market is saturated, Dedication is not the only factor to win. Strategies give you a better edge if you have it.
This book gave numerous examples and it can be remembered so that if one day we meet similar situations we can counter it effectively
Do the Chinese strategize better?.......2000-01-06
Most of the Overseas Chinese who control business empires attended village schools and were not well-versed with classical Chinese strategies. Most Chinese strategies (those emanating from the old world) despised business and persecuted it. This book is a tenuous attempt to apply stuff "Chinese" to modern business situations. I thought we (I am of Chinese descent myself) were beyond that at this point. There is absoutely no evidence that the Chinese have better strategies -- and some evidence that business is difficult to conduct there. This book is little help and lot of hype.

Customer Reviews:
A great investment!.......2004-04-08
I bought this book in 1998 and started making cookies almost immmediately. I loved the recipes and the techniques I found there. I made cookies for friends and family and teachers and coworkers for almost every holiday and special occasion I could think of. It was fun and I loved it. So much so that I started my own business in 2000, a bakery specializing in hand-decorated shortbread cookies. Every year is better, and I am finally a happy camper at work. I am sooooo glad I picked up this book!
Huge disappointment.......2003-01-11
The cookie recipes are disappointing. Some are for cookies that are not sturdy enough for cookie decorating. I found the proportions of ingredients in many of the recipes off, to the point where either they were too greasy or the cookie dough couldn't hold together. However, the instructions for how to decorate using different types of icing were helpful. I think this is a good book for ideas or design inspiration, but skip the recipes.
excellent resource!.......2001-04-20
Great decorating ideas and very tasty cookie recipes. I refer to this book often when I make cookie bouquets as gifts.
great recipes,but scanty directions.......1999-12-15
This book had excellent recipes for cookies--not too sweet--and easy to follow directions. When it comes to directions for decorating, pictures would have been helpful. Most directions read: using spatula, spread icing in the ---area, or pipe on eyes, etc. It would be nice if there were patterns to follow. As it is,you have to keep referring back to the photos on the cover or center spread. Overall, though, a very good book with lots of information about where to get supplies and how to make your own cookie cutters.
I love this book, I use it for inspiration for each season.......1999-10-27
The directions are clear and helpful I have easily learned the techniques. The recipes taste great and always work. The pictures are beautiful, I have successfully reproduced many of them and used the ideas to create other cookies.
