The revised second edition of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Starting Your Own Business, by author and entrepreneur Ed Paulson and marketing consultant Marcia Layton, is an extensive handbook of small-business basics for those who already have the desire and drive mandatory for launching an individual commercial enterprise--but it does not include all of the specific day-to-day skills that significantly increase its chances for survival. The book begins with plainspoken advice on matters such as choosing a business, setting goals, and initiating the plan that makes it all happen. This is followed by material on sales and marketing and developing business structures, which is bolstered at appropriate intervals with useful definitions, additional resources, and warnings about potential pitfalls. The next two sections on finances and growth, however, may ultimately prove most valuable. The best information here includes sections about evaluating competition and defending against potential incursions; why business bankers reject loan applications and how to make them your allies; and why production plans are critical. This book also looks at the "secrets of success," suggesting ways to cope with the ups and downs that any entrepreneur will inevitably encounter. --Howard Rothman

Introducing Business to New Entrepreneurs.......2005-05-12
When most entrepreneurs first get the yen to start a business, they realize that there must be a lot that they don't know. The legal, accounting and tax choices often seem particularly daunting . . . and there's often no money to retain an attorney.
Not knowing where to turn, many take local adult education classes (like the kind I teach). In those classes, these strivers often find out that what they didn't know that they didn't know is even more dangerous than what that they do know that they don't know.
The fourth edition of Starting Your Own Business is a good resource for such new entrepreneurs.
You will learn many of the fundamentals of picking a business to start, preparing a business plan, selecting a legal structure, organizing for success and operating the business once you start it.
Based on my experiences with new entrepreneurs, this book will answer about 80% of the questions that they usually have . . . and about 60% of the questions they should be asking.
One of the book's strengths is the CD-ROM that has sample forms and form letters for handling routine matters. While these won't substitute for having an attorney (I am one, so I know), they will allow you to work with an attorney in more effective and less expensive ways.
The areas where the book is weakest are as follows:
1. Doesn't spell out how the choice of business type affects your chances of success and the difficulty of raising money.
2. Doesn't do enough about the pros and cons of being a franchisee and how to pursue that opportunity.
3. Doesn't teach you how to create an advantaged business model and improve upon it.
4. Doesn't provide enough perspective on how to establish a management team.
One of the things I did like about the book is that it considers manufacturing businesses as well as service and professional service companies. Most resources about starting up businesses ignore the opportunity of manufacturing.
This book won't make or break your business, but it will speed your process of getting ready to launch if you don't have any background in this area.
Small Business Classic.......2004-08-24
Starting Your Own Business has been a top seller for many
years and for good reason: it's the classic handbook for
business owners. For the 4th edition, this book has been totally updated. If you have the 3rd edition, it is worth buying the new one just for the CD. An indispensable guide to those thinking about buying a business. Buy this book before you begin the process -- it is a must-have volume. If you are in business, keep this volume handy -- it addresses the most important challenges facing business owners today. Highest Recommendation.
How To Get Started in 24 Easy Chapters.......2004-07-26
I'm about halfway through this book and it's exactly what I was looking for. Over the years I've considered going out on my own but had no idea how to start. I needed an introductory guide to the setting up and running of a small business from the legal, financial & business side and that's exactly what this book does. It's a great overview of what any entrepreneur will face when they take the plunge. On top of that, it's not a bad read, for a non-fiction book.
Useful and easy to understand.......2004-07-14
I am using this book to help my friend's painting business get organized and focused. Bids and jobs take up much of his time, so this is a great tool to understand some of the "bigger" picture without having to take a bunch of business classes. The CD also has useful general forms.
Excellent Resource.......2004-07-14
This book was very easy to read and understand. If you are thinking of starting your own business and need to know how to go about doing it, this book is the only book you will need. The book comes complete with a CD containing forms and helpful resources and information.

Good Basic Rules for the Beginner.......2007-03-11
This is a quite complete guide to what it takes to start and operate a successful business in the United States. It's broken down into three major parts that cover the three big aspects of being in business.
Part One is on the general concepts of being in business, being your own boss, the money you will need, other kinds of businesses like franchises. You need to be very honest with youself here. There are some people who just are not suited for self employment. Then there the rest of who are just not suited to work for someone else.
Part Two has two areas I recommend you read and then don't exactly do what he says.
First, he starts off with how to write a business plan. I realize that people say they don't need one, but I recommend you write one anyway. It forces you to think about aspects of your business that you might otherwise ignore, and it's better to think of them before they become problems. On the other hand, I wouldn't follow his advice on how to write the plan. Go buy one of the business plan writing software packages. They are cheap ($30 or so on eBay) will guide you through the writing process and have a bunch of pre-written plans to use as examples. I've used a couple of different packages, they were both about the same, get the one that looks best to you.
Also in Part Two is a discussion on accounting. Read what he says, but then go buy a small computer accounting system. Setting up your own system is a pain, and if you start with a computer based system, you'll not have to convert later. Indeed, the first entries you make in the system can be the purchase of the software packages, and writing off of your computer system.
Part Three kind of goes back to the general concepts of part one. Chapters include comments on things like cash, banks, credit cards, etc.
All in all, a good introductory book.

Southern Bus Boy.......2006-06-13
I have been wanting to open a restaurant for several years now. I work in a seafood restaurant in a northern Mississippi town, and I don't know, I guess serving people is just in my blood.
I am a big Howard Cannon fan. I do wish that the book was a little more detailed, but I believe he really loves the business. If you want to open a restaurant, buy this book.
I'd also recommend Running a Restaurant for Dummies.
A must for new and veteran restaurant operators.......2005-08-07
Mr. Cannon covered all issues necessary to help with any suprises in the restaurant business. I continue to use it whenever problems arise.
Readable book with common-sense and valuable expertise.......2005-07-17
I have no links of any kind to any party involved in producing or selling this book. I came to this book with only low-level restaurant work knowledge, but with the idea I might set one up. So far it's only an idea. Though I have run businesses, the management and ownership side of the restaurant business is new to me.
I know that if I go into restaurants I will be competing with experienced operators. I will need to try and catch up quickly (or lose money and make errors). One important lesson my business experience has taught me is that advice from those in the know is pure gold.
So, considering a restaurant business, I bought this book.
In my opinion it is first-class. It's well-written, clear, comprehensive, quite entertaining, and the points he makes are good solid management points. It's just what I was looking for.
Basic Knowledge.......2005-03-31
I was expecting a little more detail than what this book delivered. It mostly goes through basic business information that can be found on the internet. I thought the timeline, forms, and employee scheduling sections were useful. However, I guess since it is a "Complete Idiot's Guide," I should not have expected it to be more than basic.
Just the Basics.......2003-09-05
For someone coming in with no knowledge at all of the restaurant business, this is not a bad general guide.
I was a little disapointed however at the terse treatment the author gave to money processing in the restaurant.
There are many types of restaurant computer systems(POS) and lots of systems to accept checks and credit cards. Since in most restaurants these payment forms far outdistance cash, it would be helpful to include some of the basic credit card processing provisions and information about terminals. Merchants are misguided and ripped off all the time on check and credit cards sytems that are not proper for the specific restaurant. The topic deserves a chapter, not just a few paragraphs.

Customer Reviews:
Could have Been Great !!!.......2001-07-26
This book certainly had a lot of potential. Unfortunatly there are too many errors. Some very obvious --- Samuel Cooper was not REL's brother in law. He was REL's brother's brother in law by marriage. And the photographs are not always correctly captioned. The dust jacket sleeve mentions over 70 some photos. But Lee was only photographed around 40 times. Some photos he counts twice when in reality they are of a same pose. And some photos could have been larger so the reader could actually see the beauty of the photograph. And some photos that have been discovered many years ago were simply not even in the book. This book could have great but the author did not do enough homework. He needs to go back and try again using better researchers.
Robert E. Lee AMERICA'S GENERAL.......1999-08-21
Robert E. Lee was America's General. He was a great man who'd legacy is to be told forever. He did not support the radical slavery movements of the south but did love his native state. He was a calm and bold gentleman who's gentle face and lovig nature made him a legend in his own right. Lee deserves the honor that is preserved in this book. This book captures the true beauty of AMERICA'S GENERAL.
An excellent reference on Lee.......1997-10-10
This text should be in every Civil War collectors library.

Oustanding Introduction to the Army of Tennessee.......2004-07-15
Mr. Daniel's book is a great place to start if you have an interest in the Confederate Army of Tennessee. It's a soldier's point of view of all things military. To fully understand this interesting army you will still need to go to Thomas Connelly's masterful "Army of The Heartland" and "Autumn of Glory", but start here. If you've already read Connelly then this book is a great compliment to those works.
An excellent source on the Army of Tennessee Soldiers..........2002-10-24
Finally, A book that goes into detail on the soldiers of the Army of Tennessee. This books quotes from diaries and letters from the Soldiers themselves. This is a true treasure!! I would also suggest The Army of the Heartland and Autumn of Glory by Thomas Connelly in addtion to this book. Both of these detail the Army of Tennessee from its founding until its surrender in Bentonville NC in 1865. I highly reccomend this book!!

A Commitment to Duty captures the essence of Lee through his most significant quotations and observations.

A first-rate resource for Stonewall.......1999-11-05
One of the Civil War's most recognized and majestic figures, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, is portrayed in this illustrated biography, Stonewall Jackson: A Life Portrait. The author describes how a "backwoods boy" of Virginia finds his way to West Point, struggles as a student but discovers an important part of him in the War with Mexico. And later as a teacher at Virginia Military Institute, he again struggles to find personal peace, and would only do so when war is declared between the states, and the destined "Stonewall" discovers his mark in this world. A fascinating read and wonderfully illustrated, Stonewall Jackson: A Life Portrait belongs in every library, and on the bookshelf of every historian or fan of American history.

Confederate Generals, Life Portraits.......2000-11-21
This is not another "Generals in Gray", which lists basic information on Confederate Generals. It is a collection of illustrated biographies of sixteen selected Southern generals grouped by their logical attributes. Under the heading of THE LEGENDS are Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackso, Joe Johnston, and James Longstreet. Under THE CAVALRYMEN are Jeb Stuart, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and John Hunt Morgan. Albert Sidney Johnston, John Bell Hood, and Pat Cleburne constitute THE WESTERN COMMANDERS. Understandably, Jubal Early, Braxton Bragg, and Robert Toombs are designated as THE DIFFICULT MEN. The final group is THE ECCENTRICS, made up of P/G.T.Beauregard, Leonidas Polk, and George Pickett. The term "illustrated biographies" is particularly appropriate due not only to the photographs and drawings, but also to the anecdotal information casting light on the lives and actions of these men. Descriptions of each officer's most important military actions are included. Obviously all aspects of the lives of so many Confederate stalwarts can not be reported in one book. However, the author provides sufficient details to allow the reader to understand the characteristics of each mn without slowing the reading. While you might wish that more Southern leaders had been included or quibble about those who were, you can't argue with the quality of these depictions. Depending on one's personal knowledge, this can be excellent as an introduction or as a refresher.

A must read for Lakewood/Steilacoom historians.......2000-03-20
Joseph Thomas Heath describes in detail the areas in and around Lakewood/Steilacoom in Washington State and the good and bad as a poineering farmer/rancher in the South Sound. Through the eyes of a devout Englishman you will see the Steilacoom Indians, thier friends, and thier foes, the hassles and benefits of living near Fort Nisqually, and the heartbreaking approach and eventual possesion of the Americans from Oregon. This was a Lakewood/Steilacoom full of Prarie lands, woodlands, undeveloped lakeshores, creekbanks, and bubbling artisian wells.A place where wolves roamed and Eagles were "as thick as crows".
